A generalized magnetic refrigeration scheme

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effects in antiferromagnets and compared them with those in ferromagnets using Monte Carlo simulations. In antiferromagnets, the magnetic entropy reaches a maximum value at a finite magnetic field when the temperature is fixed below the Néel temperature. Using the fact, we proposed a protocol for applying magnetic fields to achieve the maximum efficiency for magnetic refrigeration in antiferromagnets. In particular, we found that at low temperatures, antiferromagnets are more useful for magnetic refrigeration than ferromagnets.

Magnetic ordered structure dependence of magnetic refrigeration efficiency

We have investigated the relation between magnetic ordered structure and magnetic refrigeration efficiency in the Ising model on a simple cubic lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. The magnetic entropy behaviors indicate that the protocol, which was first proposed in [Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 104}, 052415 (2014).], can produce the maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change and the maximum adiabatic temperature change in antiferromagnets. Furthermore, the total amount of heat transfer under the proposed protocol reaches a maximum. The relation between measurable physical quantities and magnetic refrigeration efficiency is also discussed.

Band Gap of β-PtO2 from First-principles

We studied the band gap of β-PtO2 using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The results are obtained within the framework of generalized gradient approximation (GGA), GGA+U, GW and the hybrid functional method. For different types of calculations, the calculated band gap increases from ~ 0.46 eV to 1.80 eV. In particular, the band gap by GW (conventional and self-consistent) calculation shows a tendency of converging to ~ 1.25 \pm 0.05 eV. Effect of the on-site Coulomb interaction on the bonding characteristics is also analyzed.

Electronic Structures of Oxygen-deficient Ta2O5

We provide a first-principles description of the crystalline and oxygen-deficient Ta2O5 using refined computational methods and models. By performing calculations on a number of candidate structures, we determined the low-temperature phase and several stable oxygen vacancy configurations, which are notably different from the previous results. The most stable charge-neutral vacancy site induces a shallow level near the bottom of conduction band. Stability of different charge states is studied. Based on the results, we discuss the implications of the level structures on experiments, including the leakage current in Ta2O5-based electronic devices and catalysts.

Possible Magnetic Behavior in Oxygen-deficient β-PtO2

We studied the electronic properties of beta-platinum dioxide (β-PtO2), a catalytic material, based on density functional theory. Using the GGA+U method which reproduces the GW band structures and the experimental structural parameters, we found that the creation of an oxygen vacancy will induce local magnetic moment on the neighboring Pt and O atoms. The magnetism originates not only from the unpaired electrons that occupy the vacancy induced gap state, but also from the itinerant valence electrons. Because of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling and the localized nature of gap states, the total magnetic moment is zero for charge-neutral state (V_o^0) and is ~ 1 μB for singly-charged states (V_o^μ). Calculation of grand potential shows that, the three charge states (V_o^0, V_o^\pm) are of the same stability within a small region, and the negatively charged state (V_o^-) is energetically favored within a wide range of the band gap. On this basis we discussed the implication on catalytic behavior.

Ten-million-atom electronic structure calculations on the K computer with a massively parallel order-N theory

A massively parallel order-N electronic structure theory was constructed by an interdisciplinary research between physics, applied mathematics and computer science. (1) A high parallel efficiency with ten-million-atom nanomaterials was realized on the K computer with upto 98,304 processor cores. The mathematical foundation is a novel linear algebraic algorithm for the generalized shifted linear equation. The calculation was carried out by our code ' ELSES ' (www.elses.jp) with modelled (tight-binding-form) systems based on ab initio calculations. (2) A post-calculation analysis method, called pi-orbital crystalline orbital Hamiltonian population (pi-COHP) method, is presented, since the method is ideal for huge electronic structure data distributed among massive nodes. The analysis method is demonstrated in an sp2-sp3 nano-composite carbon solid, with an original visualization software 'VisBAR'. The present research indicates general aspects of computational physics with current or next-generation supercomputers.

Computational study of the dielectric properties of [La,Sc]2O3 solid solutions

First-principles calculations were used to compute the dielectric permittivities of hypothetical [La,Sc]2O3 solid solutions in the cubic (bixbyite) and hexagonal La2O3 phases. Dielectric enhancement is predicted at small Sc concentrations due to the rattling ion effect. Similar calculations for a model amorphous La2O3 structure show little change in permittivity when a small amount of Sc is substituted for La. In this case, the local environment around the Sc changes in a way that compensates for the rattling ion effect.
