A generalized magnetic refrigeration scheme

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effects in antiferromagnets and compared them with those in ferromagnets using Monte Carlo simulations. In antiferromagnets, the magnetic entropy reaches a maximum value at a finite magnetic field when the temperature is fixed below the Néel temperature. Using the fact, we proposed a protocol for applying magnetic fields to achieve the maximum efficiency for magnetic refrigeration in antiferromagnets. In particular, we found that at low temperatures, antiferromagnets are more useful for magnetic refrigeration than ferromagnets.

Characterisation of precipitates formed in high-pressure torsion treated Mg-3.4at.%Zn alloy

Microstructural analysis of a Mg-Zn alloy deformed at room temperature by high-pressure torsion (HPT) indicates that fine-scale precipitation occurs even without post-deformation heat treatment. Small-angle X-ray scattering detects precipitates with radii between 2.5-20 nm after one rotation, with little increase in particle size or volume fraction after 20 rotations. High resolution electron micrographs identify grain boundary precipitates of monoclinic Mg$_4$Zn$_7$ phase after three rotations and MgZn$_2$ after 20 rotations.

Magnetic ordered structure dependence of magnetic refrigeration efficiency

We have investigated the relation between magnetic ordered structure and magnetic refrigeration efficiency in the Ising model on a simple cubic lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. The magnetic entropy behaviors indicate that the protocol, which was first proposed in [Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 104}, 052415 (2014).], can produce the maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change and the maximum adiabatic temperature change in antiferromagnets. Furthermore, the total amount of heat transfer under the proposed protocol reaches a maximum. The relation between measurable physical quantities and magnetic refrigeration efficiency is also discussed.

Complex Magnetic Phase Diagram of a Geometrically Frustrated Sm Lattice: SmPd2Al3 case

Magnetism in SmPd2Al3 was investigated on a single crystal by magnetometry and neutron diffraction. SmPd2Al3 represents a distinctive example of the Sm magnetism exhibiting complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures with four consecutive magnetic phase transitions at 3.4, 3.9, 4.3 and 12.5 K. The rich magnetic phase diagram of this compound reflects the specific features of the Sm3+ ion, namely the energy nearness of the ground-state multiplet J = 5/2 and the first excited multiplet J = 7/2 in conjunction with strong crystal field influence. Consequently, a significantly reduced Sm magnetic moment in comparison with the theoretical Sm3+ free-ion value is observed. Despite the strong neutron absorption by natural samarium and the small Sm magnetic moment (~ 0.2 μB) we have successfully determined the magnetic k-vector (1/3, 1/3, 0) of the phase existing in the temperature interval 12.5 - 4.3 K. This observation classifies the SmPd2Al3 compound as a magnetically frustrated system. The complex magnetic behavior of this material is further illustrated by kinetic effects of the magnetization inducing rather complicated magnetic structure with various metastable states.

The role of hyperfine coupling in magnetic and quadrupolar ordering of Pr3Pd20Si6

We study the ternary clathrate Pr3Pd20Si6 in specific heat and AC-susceptibility measurements on a high-quality single crystal, distinguishing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) ordering on two sublattices of inequivalent Pr sites. The specific heat shows the direct involvement of nuclear spin degrees of freedom in the AFM ordering, which is well supported by our calculation of the hyperfine level scheme without adjustable parameters. Pr3Pd20Si6 is therefore one of the rare materials where the nuclear moments are involved in the formation of the magnetic ground state.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-5/2 antiferromagnetic trimer substance SrMn3P4O14

A quantum-mechanical 1/3 magnetization plateau and magnetic long-range order appear in the large-spin (5/2) substance SrMn3P4O14. Magnetization results of SrMn3P4O14 can be explained by the spin-5/2 isolated antiferromagnetic linear trimer with the intra-trimer interaction ($J_1$) value of 4.0 K. In the present study, to confirm the spin system, we performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments of SrMn3P4O14 powders. We observed plural magnetic excitations. The peak positions are 0.46, 0.68, and 1.02 meV. Constant-Q-scan spectra at several Q values (magnitude of the scattering vector) indicate that the dispersion is weak. The weak dispersion indicates that the excitations are transitions between discrete energy levels. Our INS results are consistent with results expected in the trimer model. We evaluated the J1 value as 0.29 meV (3.4 K) without considering the other interactions.

Negative magnetization of Li2Ni2Mo3O12 having a spin system composed of distorted honeycomb lattices and linear chains

We study themagnetism of a spin-1 substance Li2Ni2Mo3O12. The spin system consists of distorted honeycomb lattices and linear chains of Ni2+ spins. Li+ ions enter about 25% and 50% of the honeycomb and chain Ni sites, respectively, creating disorder in both spin subsystems. A magnetic phase transition occurs at Tc = 8.0 K in the zero magnetic field. In low magnetic fields, the magnetization increases rapidly below Tc, decreases below 7 K, and finally becomes negative at low temperatures. We determine the magnetic structure using neutron powder diffraction results. The honeycomb lattices and linear chains show antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range order, respectively. We investigate static and dynamic magnetic properties using the local probe technique of muon spin relaxation. We discuss the origin of the negative magnetization.

Spiral magnetic structure in spin-5/2 frustrated trimerized chains in SrMn3P4O14

We study a spin-5/2 antiferromagnetic trimerized chain substance SrMn3P4O14 using neutron powder diffraction experiments. The coplanar spiral magnetic structure appears below T_N1 = 2.2(1) K. Values of several magnetic structure parameters change rapidly at T_N2 = 1.75(5) K, indicating another phase transition, although the magnetic structures above and below T_N2 are the qualitatively same. The spiral magnetic structure can be explained by frustration between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in the trimerized chains.

High-Pressure Suppression of Long Range Magnetic Order in the Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet CuFeO2

We succeeded in observing pressure-suppressed magnetic long range ordering (LRO) in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO$_{2}$, using neutron diffraction experiments under an isotropic pressure. The magnetic LRO of the four-sublattice ground state under ambient pressure in CuFeO$_{2}$ almost disappears at the high pressure of 7.9 GPa, and is replaced by an incommensurate order with temperature-independent wave number of (0.192 0.192 1.5). The incommensurate wave number observed at 7.9 GPa corresponds to that observed just above the temperature at which lattice distortion and magnetic LRO simultaneously occur under ambient pressure. Therefore, the long-range magnetic ordering disappears because the high pressure suppressed the lattice distortion that otherwise relieves spin frustration and leads the spin system to LRO.

Resonant Magnetic X-ray Diffraction Study on the Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet GdPd2Al3

Resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction experiments were carried out on the stacked triangular lattice antiferromagnet GdPd2Al3. The experiments revealed an expected initial collinear c-axis order at TN1 followed by an additional in-plane order at TN2, while at the same time we found that the ground state is a helically ordered state of a very long incommensurate period of approximately 700A. The distribution of K-domains was highly anisotropic, and the domain with the modulation vector normal to the surface of the crystal was ascendant. Low-field magnetization is discussed on the basis of the observed incommensurate magnetic structure.

Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in Non-Kramers Doublet System PrInAg2

We performed ultrasonic measurement on the rare-earth intermetallic compound PrInAg_2 to examine the quadrupolar Kondo effect associated with the non-Kramers Gamma_3 doublet ground state. The characteristic softening of the elastic constant (c_{11}-c_{12})/2 below 10 K in PrInAg_2 is attributed to a Curie term in quadrupolar susceptibility for the quadrupole O_2^2=J_x^2-J_y^2 of the stable Gamma_3 ground state. (c_{11}-c_{12})/2 turns to a slight increase with the -lnT dependence below 0.1 K, which suggests the quenching of the quadrupolar moment in the quadrupolar Kondo state. Under applied magnetic fields of 10 T and 15 T above 8.7 T corresponding to the Kondo temperature T_K of ~ 0.86 K, the behavior of (c_{11}-c_{12})/2 is described in terms of quadrupolar susceptibility for the stable 4f^2 state.
