Layered CrGe1-xSe3+y with Cr Kagome Lattice and Antiferromagnetic Ordering

We report the synthesis and properties of a new layered material, CrGe1-xSe3+y. The crystal structure was determined by using single crystal x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. CrGe1-xSe3+y crystallizes with a space group R-3m, featuring a double Kagome layer of chromium atoms, sandwiched between disordered Ge-Se layers. This compound displays antiferromagnetic order below 50 K, unlike the ferromagnetic behavior in CrGeTe3. Chromium displays an effective moment of ~3.9 μB/Cr, consistent with Cr3+ oxidation. The presence of this phase limits the possibility of a ferromagnetic CrGeSe3 analogous to CrGeTe3.

Polarization dependent photoemission as a probe of the magnetic ground state in the layered ferromagnet VI3

Layered ferromagnets are thrilling materials from both a fundamental and technological point of view. VI3 is an interesting example, with a complex magnetism that differentiates it from the first reported Cr based layered ferromagnets. Here, we show in an indirect way through Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, the importance of spin-orbit coupling setting the electronic properties of this material. Our light polarized photoemission measurements point to a ground state with a half-filled e'_+- doublet, where a gap opening is triggered by spin-orbit coupling enhanced by electronic correlations.

Theory-guided investigation on magnetic evolution of MnPt5−x_{5-x}Pdx_xP and discovery of anti-CeCoIn5_5-type ferromagnetic MnPd5_5P

We report the magnetic changes from canted antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic orderings in anti-115-type MnPt5−x_{5-x}Pdx_xP (xx = 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5) and the discovery of a new rare-earth-free ferromagnet, MnPd5_5P by both theoretical prediction and experimental investigation. The family compounds were synthesized using high temperature solid state method and characterized to crystalize in the anti-CeCoIn5_5 type with the space group P4/mmm exhibiting a two-dimensional layered structural feature. The magnetic property measurements indicate that the compounds ordered from canted A-type antiferromagnet in MnPt5_5P to ferromagnet above the room temperature with varying degrees of coercivity and magnetic moments in MnPd5_5P by reducing the spin orbital coupling. The results of the MnPt5−x_{5-x}Pdx_xP have been analyzed in comparison to the other candidates of the 151 family of Mn(Pt/Pd)5_5(P/As) to understand the complex structure-magnetism relationships.

Hysteretic magnetoresistance and unconventional anomalous Hall effect in the frustrated magnet TmB_4

We study TmB_4, a frustrated magnet on the Archimedean Shastry-Sutherland lattice, through magnetization and transport experiments. The lack of anisotropy in resistivity shows that TmB_4 is an electronically three-dimensional system. The magnetoresistance (MR) is hysteretic at low-temperature even though a corresponding hysteresis in magnetization is absent. The Hall resistivity shows unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and is linear above saturation despite a large MR. We propose that complex structures at magnetic domain walls may be responsible for the hysteretic MR and may also lead to the AHE.

Physical properties of single crystalline RRMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} (RR = Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) and the search for in-plane magnetic anisotropy in hexagonal systems

Single crystals of RRMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} (RR=Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by measurements of room-temperature x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent specific heat and temperature-, field-dependent resistivity and anisotropic magnetization. YMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} is a non-local-moment-bearing metal with an electronic specific heat coefficient, γ∼γ\sim 15 mJ/mol K2^2. Yb is divalent and basically non-moment bearing in YbMg2_{2}Cu9_{9}. Ce is trivalent in CeMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} with two magnetic transitions being observed at 2.1 K and 1.5 K. PrMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} does not exhibit any magnetic phase transition down to 0.5 K. The other members being studied (RR=Nd, Gd-Dy) all exhibits antiferromagnetic transitions at low-temperatures ranging from 3.2 K for NdMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} to 11.9 K for TbMg2_{2}Cu9_{9}. Whereas GdMg2_{2}Cu9_{9} is isotropic in its paramagnetic state due to zero angular momentum (LL=0), all the other local-moment-bearing members manifest an anisotropic, planar magnetization in their paramagnetic states. To further study this planar anisotropy, detailed angular-dependent magnetization was carried out on magnetically diluted (Y0.99_{0.99}Tb0.01_{0.01})Mg2_{2}Cu9_{9} and (Y0.99_{0.99}Dy0.01_{0.01})Mg2_{2}Cu9_{9}. Despite the strong, planar magnetization anisotropy, the in-plane magnetic anisotropy is weak and field-dependent. A set of crystal electric field parameters are proposed to explain the observed magnetic anisotropy.

Anisotropic Hc2H_{c2}, thermodynamic and transport measurements, and pressure dependence of TcT_{c} in K2_{2}Cr3_{3}As3_{3} single crystals

We present a detailed study of single crystalline K2_{2}Cr3_{3}As3_{3} and analyze its thermodynamic and transport properties, anisotropic Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T), and initial pressure-dependence of TcT_{c}. In zero-field, the temperature-dependent resistivity is metallic. Deviation from a linear temperature-dependence is evident below 100 K and a T3T^{3}-dependence is roughly followed from just above TcT_{c} (∼\sim10 K) to ∼\sim 40 K. Anisotropic Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T) data were measured up to 140 kOe with field applied along and perpendicular to the rod-like crystals. For the applied field perpendicular to the rod, Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T) is linear with a slope ∼\sim-70 kOe/K. For field applied along the rod, the slope is about -120 kOe/K below 70 kOe. Above 70 kOe, the magnitude of the slope decreases to ∼\sim-70 kOe/K. The electronic specific heat coefficient, γγ, just above TcT_{c}, is 73 mJ/mol K2^{2}; the Debye temperature, ΘDΘ_{D}, is 220 K. The specific heat jump at the superconducting transition ΔΔC ∼\sim 2.2 γTcγT_{c}. Finally, for hydrostatic pressures up to ∼\sim7 kbar, TcT_{c} decreases under pressure linearly at a rate of -0.034 K/kbar.

Origin of modulated phases and magnetic hysteresis in TmB_4

We investigate the low temperature magnetic phases in TmB_4, a metallic quantum magnet on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice, using co-ordinated experimental and theoretical studies. Our results provide an explanation for the appearance of the intriguing fractional plateau in TmB_4 and accompanying magnetic hysteresis. Together with observation of the bump in the half-plateau, our results support the picture that the magnetization plateau structure in TmB_4 is strongly influenced by the zero-field modulated phases. We present a phenomenological model to explain the appearance of the modulated phases and a microscopic Hamiltonian that captures the complete magnetic behavior of TmB_4.

Phase transition in bulk single crystals and thin films of VO2 by nano-infrared spectroscopy and imaging

We have systematically studied a variety of vanadium dioxide (VO2) crystalline forms, including bulk single crystals and oriented thin films, using infrared (IR) near-field spectroscopic imaging techniques. By measuring the IR spectroscopic responses of electrons and phonons in VO2 with sub-grain-size spatial resolution (~20 nm), we show that epitaxial strain in VO2 thin films not only triggers spontaneous local phase separations but also leads to intermediate electronic and lattice states that are intrinsically different from those found in bulk. Generalized rules of strain and symmetry dependent mesoscopic phase inhomogeneity are also discussed. These results set the stage for a comprehensive understanding of complex energy landscapes that may not be readily determined by macroscopic approaches.

Physical properties of V1−x_{1-x}Tix_{x}O2_{2} (0 << x << 0.187) single crystals

Free standing, low strain, single crystals of pure and titanium doped VO2_{2} were grown out of an excess of V2_{2}O5_{5} using high temperature solution growth techniques. At TMI∼T_{MI} \sim 340 K, pure VO2_{2} exhibits a clear first-order phase transition from a high-temperature paramagnetic tetragonal phase (R) to a low-temperature non-magnetic monoclinic phase (M1). With Ti doping, another monoclinic phase (M2) emerges between the R and M1 phases. The phase transition temperature between R and M2 increases with increasing Ti doping while the transition temperature between M2 and M1 decreases.

Study of 57Fe Mossbauer effect in RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd)

We report measurements of 57Fe Mossbauer spectra for RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd) from ~ 4.5 K to room temperature. The obtained isomer shift values are very similar for all three compounds, their temperature dependence was analyzed within the Debye model and resulted in an estimate of the Debye temperatures of 450-500 K. The values of quadrupole splitting at room temperature change with the cubic lattice constant a in a linear fashion. For GdFe2Zn20, ferromagnetic order is seen as an appearance of a sextet in the spectra. The 57Fe site hyperfine field for T = 0 was evaluated to be ~ 2.4 T.

Use of frit-disc crucibles for routine and exploratory solution growth of single crystalline samples

Solution growth of single crystals from high temperature solutions often involves the separation of residual solution from the grown crystals. For many growths of intermetallic compounds, this separation has historically been achieved with the use of plugs of silica wool. Whereas this is generally efficient in a mechanical sense, it leads to a significant contamination of the decanted liquid with silica fibers. In this paper we present a simple design for frit-disc alumina crucible sets that has made their use in the growth single crystals from high temperature solutions both simple and affordable. An alumina frit-disc allows for the clean separation of the residual liquid from the solid phase. This allows for the reuse of the decanted liquid, either for further growth of the same phase, or for subsequent growth of other, related phases. In this paper we provide examples of the growth of isotopically substituted TbCd6_{6} and icosahedral i-RRCd quasicrystals, as well as the separation of (i) the closely related Bi2_{2}Rh3_{3}S2_{2} and Bi2_{2}Rh3.5_{3.5}S2_{2} phases and (ii) PrZn11_{11} and Pr2_{2}Zn17_{17}.

Magnetic and transport properties of i-RR-Cd icosahedral quasicrystals (RR = Y, Gd-Tm)

We present a detailed characterization of the recently discovered i-RR-Cd (RR = Y, Gd-Tm) binary quasicrystals by means of x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent dc and ac magnetization, temperature-dependent resistance and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. Structurally, the broadening of x-ray diffraction peaks found for i-RR-Cd is dominated by frozen-in phason strain, which is essentially independent of RR. i-Y-Cd is weakly diamagnetic and manifests a temperature-independent susceptibility. i-Gd-Cd can be characterized as a spin-glass below 4.6 K via dc magnetization cusp, a third order non-linear magnetic susceptibility peak, a frequency-dependent freezing temperature and a broad maximum in the specific heat. i-RR-Cd (RR = Ho-Tm) is similar to i-Gd-Cd in terms of features observed in thermodynamic measurements. i-Tb-Cd and i-Dy-Cd do not show a clear cusp in their zero-field-cooled dc magnetization data, but instead show a more rounded, broad local maximum. The resistivity for i-RR-Cd is of order 300 μΩμΩ cm and weakly temperature-dependent. The characteristic freezing temperatures for i-RR-Cd (RR = Gd-Tm) deviate from the de Gennes scaling, in a manner consistent with crystal electric field splitting induced local moment anisotropy.

i-R-Cd (R = Gd - Tm, Y): A new family of binary magnetic icosahedral quasicrystals

"Seek and ye shall find, the unsought shall go undetected." This adage, attributed to Aristophanes' can be considered one of the defining mantras of new materials research; if you don't look, you certainly will not discover. As a result of our recent discovery of the binary quasicrystalline phase i-Sc12Zn88 we proposed that there may well be other binary quasicrystalline phases lurking nearby known crystalline approximants, perhaps as peritectally forming compounds with very limited liquidus surfaces, offering greatly reduced ranges of composition/temperature for primary solidification. Here we report that, as the adage goes, we have found. Indeed, adjacent to the RCd6, cubic approximate structure, we have discovered the long sought after model system for magnetic quasicrystals: a new family of at least seven rare earth icosahedral quasicrystals: i-R-Cd for R = Gd - Tm, Y, six of which now form the known set of moment bearing, binary quasicrystals.

Thermodynamic and transport properties of single crystalline RCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm)

Single crystals of RCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm) were grown using a self-flux method and were characterized by room-temperature powder x-ray diffraction; anisotropic, temperature and field dependent magnetization; temperature and field dependent, in-plane resistivity; and specific heat measurements. In this series, the majority of the moment-bearing members order antiferromagnetically; YCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} and LaCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} are non-moment-bearing. Ce is trivalent in CeCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} at high temperatures, and exhibits an enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient due to Kondo effect at low temperatures. In addition, CeCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} shows two low-temperature anomalies in temperature-dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements. Three members (R = Tb-Ho) have multiple phase transitions above 1.8 K. Eu appears to be divalent with total angular momentum L = 0. Both EuCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} and GdCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} manifest essentially isotropic paramagnetic properties consistent with J = S = 7/2. Clear magnetic anisotropy for rare-earth members with finite L was observed, with ErCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} and TmCo2_{2}Ge2_{2} manifesting planar anisotropy and the rest members manifesting axial anisotropy. The experimentally estimated crystal electric field (CEF) parameters B20_{2}^{0} were calculated from the anisotropic paramagnetic θabθ_{ab} and θcθ_{c} values and follow a trend that agrees well with theoretical predictions. The ordering temperatures, TN_{N}, as well as the polycrystalline averaged paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, ΘavgΘ_{avg}, for the heavy rare-earth members deviate from the de Gennes scaling, as the magnitude of both are the highest for Tb, which is sometimes seen for extremely axial systems. Except for SmCo2_{2}Ge2_{2}, metamagnetic transitions were observed at 1.8 K for all members that ordered antiferromagnetically.
