On the two-dimensional singular stochastic viscous nonlinear wave equations

We study the stochastic viscous nonlinear wave equations (SvNLW) on $\mathbb T^2$, forced by a fractional derivative of the space-time white noise $ξ$. In particular, we consider SvNLW with the singular additive forcing $D^\frac{1}{2}ξ$ such that solutions are expected to be merely distributions. By introducing an appropriate renormalization, we prove local well-posedness of SvNLW. By establishing an energy bound via a Yudovich-type argument, we also prove global well-posedness of the defocusing cubic SvNLW. Lastly, in the defocusing case, we prove almost sure global well-posedness of SvNLW with respect to certain Gaussian random initial data.

Probabilistic global well-posedness for a viscous nonlinear wave equation modeling fluid-structure interaction

We prove probabilistic well-posedness for a 2D viscous nonlinear wave equation modeling fluid-structure interaction between a 3D incompressible, viscous Stokes flow and nonlinear elastodynamics of a 2D stretched membrane. The focus is on (rough) data, often arising in real-life problems, for which it is known that the deterministic problem is ill-posed. We show that random perturbations of such data give rise almost surely to the existence of a unique solution. More specifically, we prove almost sure global well-posedness for a viscous nonlinear wave equation with the subcritical initial data in the Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}^s (\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s > - \frac 15$, which are randomly perturbed using Wiener randomization. This result shows "robustness" of nonlinear FSI problems/models, and provides confidence that even for the "rough data" (data in $\mathcal{H}^s$, $s > -\frac 1 5$) random perturbations of such data (due to e.g., randomness in real-life data, numerical discretization, etc.) will almost surely provide a unique solution which depends continuously on the data in the $\mathcal{H}^s$ topology.

Sharp local well-posedness of the two-dimensional periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a quadratic nonlinearity $|u|^2$

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with the quadratic nonlinearity $|u|^2$, posed on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. While the relevant $L^3$-Strichartz estimate is known only with a derivative loss, we prove local well-posedness of the quadratic NLS in $L^2(\mathbb{T}^2)$, thus resolving an open problem of thirty years since Bourgain (1993). In view of ill-posedness in negative Sobolev spaces, this result is sharp. We establish a crucial bilinear estimate by separately studying the non-resonant and nearly resonant cases. As a corollary, we obtain a tri-linear version of the $L^3$-Strichartz estimate without any derivative loss.

Three-dimensional stochastic cubic nonlinear wave equation with almost space-time white noise

We study the stochastic cubic nonlinear wave equation (SNLW) with an additive noise on the three-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^3$. In particular, we prove local well-posedness of the (renormalized) SNLW when the noise is almost a space-time white noise. In recent years, the paracontrolled calculus has played a crucial role in the well-posedness study of singular SNLW on $\mathbb{T}^3$ by Gubinelli, Koch, and the first author (2018), Okamoto, Tolomeo, and the first author (2020), and Bringmann (2020). Our approach, however, does not rely on the paracontrolled calculus. We instead proceed with the second order expansion and study the resulting equation for the residual term, using multilinear dispersive smoothing.

Quasi-invariant Gaussian measures for the nonlinear wave equation in three dimensions

We prove quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures supported on Sobolev spaces under the dynamics of the three-dimensional defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation. As in the previous work on the two-dimensional case, we employ a simultaneous renormalization on the energy functional and its time derivative. Two new ingredients in the three-dimensional case are (i) the construction of the weighted Gaussian measures, based on a variational formula for the partition function inspired by Barashkov and Gubinelli (2018), and (ii) an improved argument in controlling the growth of the truncated weighted Gaussian measures, where we combine a deterministic growth bound of solutions with stochastic estimates on random distributions.

A remark on triviality for the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear wave equation

We consider the two-dimensional stochastic damped nonlinear wave equation (SdNLW) with the cubic nonlinearity, forced by a space-time white noise. In particular, we investigate the limiting behavior of solutions to SdNLW with regularized noises and establish triviality results in the spirit of the work by Hairer, Ryser, and Weber (2012). More precisely, without renormalization of the nonlinearity, we establish the following two limiting behaviors; (i) in the strong noise regime, we show that solutions to SdNLW with regularized noises tend to 0 as the regularization is removed and (ii) in the weak noise regime, we show that solutions to SdNLW with regularized noises converge to a solution to a deterministic damped nonlinear wave equation with an additional mass term.

Global well-posedness of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in almost critical spaces

In this paper, we first introduce a new function space $MH^{θ, p}$ whose norm is given by the $\ell^p$-sum of modulated $H^θ$-norms of a given function. In particular, when $θ< -\frac 12$, we show that the space $MH^{θ, p}$ agrees with the modulation space $M^{2, p}(\mathbb R)$ on the real line and the Fourier-Lebesgue space $\mathcal F L^{p}(\mathbb T)$ on the circle. We use this equivalence of the norms and the Galilean symmetry to adapt the conserved quantities constructed by Killip-Vişan-Zhang to the modulation space setting. By applying the scaling symmetry, we then prove global well-posedness of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in almost critical spaces. More precisely, we show that the cubic NLS on $\mathbb R$ is globally well-posed in $M^{2, p}(\mathbb R)$ for any $p < \infty$, while the renormalized cubic NLS on $\mathbb T$ is globally well-posed in $\mathcal FL^p(\mathbb T)$ for any $p < \infty$. In Appendix, we also establish analogous global-in-time bounds for the modified KdV equation (mKdV) in the modulation spaces on the real line and in the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces on the circle. An additional key ingredient of the proof in this case is a Galilean transform which converts the mKdV to the mKdV-NLS equation.

On the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations at critical regularities

We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations (SNLS) with an additive noise in the mass-critical and energy-critical settings. By adapting the probabilistic perturbation argument employed in the context of the random data Cauchy theory by the first author with Bényi and Pocovnicu (2015) to the current stochastic PDE setting, we present a concise argument to establish global well-posedness of the mass-critical and energy-critical SNLS.

On the two-dimensional hyperbolic stochastic sine-Gordon equation

We study the two-dimensional stochastic sine-Gordon equation (SSG) in the hyperbolic setting. In particular, by introducing a suitable time-dependent renormalization for the relevant imaginary multiplicative Gaussian chaos, we prove local well-posedness of SSG for any value of a parameter $β^2 > 0$ in the nonlinearity. This exhibits sharp contrast with the parabolic case studied by Hairer and Shen (2016) and Chandra, Hairer, and Shen (2018), where the parameter is restricted to the subcritical range: $0 < β^2 < 8 π$. We also present a triviality result for the unrenormalized SSG.

Stochastic quantization of Liouville conformal field theory

We study a nonlinear stochastic heat equation forced by a space-time white noise on closed surfaces, with nonlinearity $e^{βu}$. This equation corresponds to the stochastic quantization of the Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) measure. (i) We first revisit the construction of the LQG measure in Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT) in the $L^2$ regime $0<β<\sqrt{2}$. This uniformizes in this regime the approaches of David-Kupiainen-Rhodes-Vargas (2016), David-Rhodes-Vargas (2016) and Guillarmou-Rhodes-Vargas (2019) which treated the case of a closed surface with genus 0, 1 and $> 1$ respectively. Moreover, our argument shows that this measure is independent of the approximation procedure for a large class of smooth approximations. (ii) We prove almost sure global well-posedness of the parabolic stochastic dynamics, and invariance of the measure under this stochastic flow. In particular, our results improve previous results obtained by Garban (2020) in the cases of the sphere and the torus with their canonical metric, and are new in the case of closed surfaces with higher genus.

Non-existence of solutions for the periodic cubic NLS below $L^2$

We prove non-existence of solutions for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the circle if initial data belong to $H^s(\mathbb{T}) \setminus L^2(\mathbb{T})$ for some $s \in (-\frac18, 0)$. The proof is based on establishing an a priori bound on solutions to a renormalized cubic NLS in negative Sobolev spaces via the short time Fourier restriction norm method.

Normal form approach to global well-posedness of the quadratic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle

We consider the quadratic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (dNLS) on the circle. In particular, we develop an infinite iteration scheme of normal form reductions for dNLS. By combining this normal form procedure with the Cole-Hopf transformation, we prove unconditional global well-posedness in $L^2(\mathbb{T})$, and more generally in certain Fourier-Lebesgue spaces $\mathcal{F} L^{s, p}(\mathbb{T})$, under the mean-zero and smallness assumptions. As a byproduct, we construct an infinite sequence of quantities that are invariant under the dynamics. We also show the necessity of the smallness assumption by explicitly constructing a finite time blowup solution with non-small mean-zero initial data.

On invariant Gibbs measures for the generalized KdV equations

We consider the defocusing generalized KdV equations on the circle. In particular, we construct global-in-time solutions with initial data distributed according to the Gibbs measure and show that the law of the random solutions, at any time, is again given by the Gibbs measure. In handling a nonlinearity of an arbitrary high degree, we make use of the Hermite polynomials and the white noise functional.

On the ill-posedness of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle

In this note, we consider the ill-posedness issue for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the circle. In particular, adapting the argument by Christ-Colliander-Tao [14] to the periodic setting, we exhibit a norm inflation phenomenon for both the usual cubic NLS and the Wick ordered cubic NLS for $s \leq s_\text{crit} :=- \frac 12$. We also discuss norm inflation phenomena for general cubic fractional NLS on the circle.

On Cameron-Martin Theorem and almost sure global existence

In this note, we discuss various aspects of invariant measures for nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs. In particular, we show almost sure global existence for some Hamiltonian PDEs with initial data of the form: "smooth deterministic function + a rough random perturbation", as a corollary to Cameron-Martin Theorem and known almost sure global existence results with respect to Gaussian measures on spaces of functions.

On nonlinear Schrödinger equations with almost periodic initial data

We consider the Cauchy problem of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) with almost periodic functions as initial data. We first prove that, given a frequency set $\pmbω =\{ω_j\}_{j = 1}^\infty$, NLS is local well-posed in the algebra $\mathcal{A}_{\pmbω}(\mathbb R)$ of almost periodic functions with absolutely convergent Fourier series. Then, we prove a finite time blowup result for NLS with a nonlinearity $|u|^p$, $p \in 2\mathbb{N}$. This elementary argument presents the first instance of finite time blowup solutions to NLS with generic almost periodic initial data.

On the probabilistic Cauchy theory of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb R^d$, $d \geq 3$

We consider the Cauchy problem of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on $\mathbb R^d$, $d \geq 3$, with random initial data and prove almost sure well-posedness results below the scaling critical regularity $s_\text{crit} = \frac{d-2}{2}$. More precisely, given a function on $\mathbb R^d$, we introduce a randomization adapted to the Wiener decomposition, and, intrinsically, to the so-called modulation spaces. Our goal in this paper is three-fold. (i) We prove almost sure local well-posedness of the cubic NLS below the scaling critical regularity along with small data global existence and scattering. (ii) We implement a probabilistic perturbation argument and prove `conditional' almost sure global well-posedness for $d = 4$ in the defocusing case, assuming an a priori energy bound on the critical Sobolev norm of the nonlinear part of a solution; when $d \ne 4$, we show that conditional almost sure global well-posedness in the defocusing case also holds under an additional assumption of global well-posedness of solutions to the defocusing cubic NLS with deterministic initial data in the critical Sobolev regularity. (iii) Lastly, we prove global well-posedness and scattering with a large probability for initial data randomized on dilated cubes.

Probabilistic global well-posedness of the energy-critical defocusing quintic nonlinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$

We prove almost sure global well-posedness of the energy-critical defocusing quintic nonlinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with random initial data in $ H^s(\mathbb{R}^3) \times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for $s > \frac 12$. The main new ingredient is a uniform probabilistic energy bound for approximating random solutions.

Solitons and scattering for the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation: \[ i\partial_t u = -Δu - |u|^2u + |u|^4u. \] In the first part of the paper, we analyze the one-parameter family of ground-state solitons associated to this equation with particular attention to the shape of the associated mass/energy curve. Additionally, we are able to characterize the kernel of the linearized operator about such solitons and to demonstrate that they occur as optimizers for a one-parameter family of inequalities of Gagliardo--Nirenberg type. Building on this work, in the latter part of the paper we prove that scattering holds for solutions belonging to the region $\mathcal{R}$ of the mass/energy plane where the virial is positive. We show this region is partially bounded by solitons but also by rescalings of solitons (which are not soliton solutions in their own right). The discovery of rescaled solitons in this context is new and highlights an unexpected limitation of any virial-based methodology.

Wiener randomization on unbounded domains and an application to almost sure well-posedness of NLS

We consider a randomization of a function on $\mathbb R^d$ that is naturally associated to the Wiener decomposition and, intrinsically, to the modulation spaces. Such randomized functions enjoy better integrability, thus allowing us to improve the Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation. As an example, we also show that the energy-critical cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb R^4$ is almost surely locally well-posed with respect to randomized initial data below the energy space.

Behavior of a Model Dynamical System with Applications to Weak Turbulence

We experimentally explore solutions to a model Hamiltonian dynamical system derived in Colliander et al., 2012, to study frequency cascades in the cubic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the torus. Our results include a statistical analysis of the evolution of data with localized amplitudes and random phases, which supports the conjecture that energy cascades are a generic phenomenon. We also identify stationary solutions, periodic solutions in an associated problem and find experimental evidence of hyperbolic behavior. Many of our results rely upon reframing the dynamical system using a hydrodynamic formulation.

A remark on normal forms and the "upside-down" I-method for periodic NLS: growth of higher Sobolev norms

We study growth of higher Sobolev norms of solutions to the one-dimensional periodic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). By a combination of the normal form reduction and the upside-down I-method, we establish \|u(t)\|_{H^s} \lesssim (1+|t|)^{α(s-1)+} with α= 1 for a general power nonlinearity. In the quintic case, we obtain the above estimate with α= 1/2 via the space-time estimate due to Bourgain [4], [5]. In the cubic case, we concretely compute the terms arising in the first few steps of the normal form reduction and prove the above estimate with α= 4/9. These results improve the previously known results (except for the quintic case.) In Appendix, we also show how Bourgain's idea in [4] on the normal form reduction for the quintic nonlinearity can be applied to other powers.

Global well-posedness of the Gross--Pitaevskii and cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non-vanishing boundary conditions

We consider the Gross--Pitaevskii equation on $\R^4$ and the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on $\R^3$ with non-vanishing boundary conditions at spatial infinity. By viewing these equations as perturbations to the energy-critical NLS, we prove that they are globally well-posed in their energy spaces. In particular, we prove unconditional uniqueness in the energy spaces for these equations.

Modulation spaces, Wiener amalgam spaces, and Brownian motions

We study the local-in-time regularity of the Brownian motion with respect to localized variants of modulation spaces M^{p, q}_s and Wiener amalgam spaces W^{p, q}_s. We show that the periodic Brownian motion belongs locally in time to M^{p, q}_s (T) and W^{p, q}_s (T) for (s-1)q < -1, and the condition on the indices is optimal. Moreover, with the Wiener measure μon T, we show that (M^{p, q}_s (T), μ) and (W^{p, q}_s (T), μ) form abstract Wiener spaces for the same range of indices, yielding large deviation estimates. We also establish the endpoint regularity of the periodic Brownian motion with respect to a Besov-type space \ft{b}^s_{p, \infty} (T). Specifically, we prove that the Brownian motion belongs to \ft{b}^s_{p, \infty} (T) for (s-1) p = -1, and it obeys a large deviation estimate. Finally, we revisit the regularity of Brownian motion on usual local Besov spaces B_{p, q}^s, and indicate the endpoint large deviation estimates.

On invariant Gibbs measures conditioned on mass and momentum

We construct a Gibbs measure for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) on the circle, conditioned on prescribed mass and momentum: d μ_{a,b} = Z^{-1} 1_{\int_T |u|^2 = a} 1_{i \int_T u \bar{u}_x = b} exp (\pm1/p \int_T |u|^p - 1/2 \int_{\T} |u|^2) d P for a \in R^+ and b \in R, where P is the complex-valued Wiener measure on the circle. We also show that μ_{a,b} is invariant under the flow of NLS. We note that i \int_\T u \bar{u}_x is the Levy stochastic area, and in particular that this is invariant under the flow of NLS.

On unconditional well-posedness of modified KdV

Bourgain(1993) proved that the periodic modified KdV equation (mKdV) is locally well-posed in Sobolev spave H^s(T), s >= 1/2, by introducing new weighted Sobolev spaces X^s,b, where the uniqueness holds conditionally, namely in the intersection of C([0, T]; H^s) and X^s,b. In this paper, we establish unconditional well-posedness of mKdV in H^s(T), s >= 1/2, i.e. we in addition establish unconditional uniqueness in C([0, T]; H^s), s >= 1/2, of solutions to mKdV. We prove this result via differentiation by parts. For the endpoint case s = 1/2, we perform careful quinti- and septi-linear estimates after the second differentiation by parts.

Poincaré-Dulac normal form reduction for unconditional well-posedness of the periodic cubic NLS

We implement an infinite iteration scheme of Poincare-Dulac normal form reductions to establish an energy estimate on the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) in C_t L^2(T), without using any auxiliary function space. This allows us to construct weak solutions of NLS in C_t L^2(T)$ with initial data in L^2(T) as limits of classical solutions. As a consequence of our construction, we also prove unconditional well-posedness of NLS in H^s(T) for s \geq 1/6.

Remarks on nonlinear smoothing under randomization for the periodic KdV and the cubic Szegö equation

We consider Cauchy problems of some dispersive PDEs with random initial data. In particular, we construct local-in-time solutions to the mean-zero periodic KdV almost surely for the initial data in the support of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on H^s(T), s > s_0 where s_0 = -11/6 + \sqrt{61}/6 \thickapprox -0.5316 < -1/2, by exhibiting nonlinear smoothing under randomization on the second iteration of the integration formulation. We also show that there is no nonlinear smoothing for the dispersionless cubic Szegö equation under randomization of initial data.

Interpolation of Gibbs measures with White Noise for Hamiltonian PDE

We consider the family of interpolation measures of Gibbs measures and white noise given by $$dQ_{0,\b}^{(p)} = Z_\b^{-1} \ind_{{\int_{\T} u^2\le K\b^{-1/2}\}} e^{-\int_{\T} u^2 +\b \int u^p} dP_{0,\b}$$ where $P_{0, \b}$ is the Wiener measure on the circle, with variance $β^{-1}$, conditioned to have mean zero. It is shown that as $β\to 0$, $Q_0^β$ converges weakly to mean zero Gaussian white noise $Q_0$. As an application, we present a straightforward proof that $Q_0$ is invariant for the Kortweg-de Vries equation (KdV). This weak convergence also shows that the white noise is a weak limit of invariant measures for the modified KdV and the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Invariant weighted Wiener measures and almost sure global well-posedness for the periodic derivative NLS

In this paper we construct an invariant weighted Wiener measure associated to the periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one dimension and establish global well-posedness for data living in its support. In particular almost surely for data in a Fourier-Lebesgue space ${\mathcal F}L^{s,r}(\T)$ with $s \ge \frac{1}{2}$, $2 < r < 4$, $(s-1)r <-1$ and scaling like $H^{\frac{1}{2}-ε}(\T),$ for small $ε>0$. We also show the invariance of this measure.

On the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation below L^2

In this paper, we review several recent results concerning well-posedness of the one-dimensional, cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) on the real line R and on the circle T for solutions below the L^2-threshold. We point out common results for NLS on R and the so-called "Wick ordered NLS" (WNLS) on T, suggesting that WNLS may be an appropriate model for the study of solutions below L^2(T). In particular, in contrast with a recent result of Molinet who proved that the solution map for the periodic cubic NLS equation is not weakly continuous from L^2(T) to the space of distributions, we show that this is not the case for WNLS.

Periodic Stochastic Korteweg-de Vries Equation

We prove the local well-posedness of the periodic stochastic Korteweg-de Vries equation with the additive space-time white noise. In order to treat low regularity of the white noise in space, we consider the Cauchy problem in the Besov-type space \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty}(T) for s= -1/2+, p = 2+ such that sp < -1. In establishing the local well-posedness, we use a variant of the Bourgain space adapted to \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty}(T) and establish a nonlinear estimate on the second iteration on the integral formulation. The deterministic part of the nonlinear estimate also yields the local well-posedness of the deterministic KdV in M(T), the space of finite Borel measures on T.

White noise for KdV and mKdV on the circle

We survey different approaches to study the invariance of the white noise for the periodic KdV. We mainly discuss the following two methods. First, we discuss the PDE method, following Bourgain \cite{BO4}, in a general framework. Then, we show how it can be applied to the low regularity setting of the white noise for KdV by introducing the Besov-type space \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty}, sp< -1. Secondly, we describe the probabilistic method by Quastel, Valkó, and the author \cite{OQV}. We also use this probabilistic approach to study the white noise for mKdV.

preprint2009arXiv

Invariance of the white noise for KdV

We prove the invariance of the mean 0 white noise for the periodic KdV. First, we show that the Besov-type space \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty}, sp <-1, contains the support of the white noise. Then, we prove local well-posedness in \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty} for p= 2+, s = -{1/2}+ such that sp <-1. In establishing the local well-posedness, we use a variant of the Bourgain spaces with a weight. This provides an analytical proof of the invariance of the white noise under the flow of KdV obtained in Quastel-Valko.
