A Lattice Study of Quark and Glue Momenta and Angular Momenta in the Nucleon

We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the connected and disconnected insertions. The quark disconnected insertion loops are computed with $Z_4$ noise, and the signal-to-noise is improved with unbiased subtractions. The glue operator is comprised of gauge-field tensors constructed from the overlap operator. The calculation is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice at $β= 6.0$ for Wilson fermions with $κ=0.154, 0.155$, and $0.1555$ which correspond to pion masses at $650, 538$, and $478$~MeV, respectively. The chirally extrapolated $u$ and $d$ quark momentum/angular momentum fraction is found to be $0.64(5)/0.70(5)$, the strange momentum/angular momentum fraction is $0.024(6)/0.023(7)$, and that of the glue is $0.33(6)/0.28(8)$. The previous study of quark spin on the same lattice revealed that it carries a fraction of $0.25(12)$ of proton spin. The orbital angular momenta of the quarks are then obtained from subtracting the spin from their corresponding angular momentum components. We find that the quark orbital angular momentum constitutes $0.47(13)$ of the proton spin with almost all of it coming from the disconnected insertions.

Quark and Glue Momenta and Angular Momenta in the Proton --- a Lattice Calculation

We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the connected and disconnected insertions. The calculation is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice at $β= 6.0$ and for Wilson fermions with $κ= 0.154, 0.155,$ and 0.1555 which correspond to pion masses at 650, 538, and 478 MeV. The quark loops are calculated with $Z_4$ noise and signal-to-noise is improved further with unbiased subtractions. The glue operator is comprised of gauge-field tensors constructed from the overlap operator. The $u$ and $d$ quark momentum/angular momentum fraction is 0.66(5)/0.72(5), the strange momentum/angular momentum fraction is 0.024(6)/0.023(7), and that of the glue is 0.31(6)/0.25(8). The orbital angular momenta of the quarks are obtained from subtracting the angular momentum component from its corresponding spin. As a result, the quark orbital angular momentum constitutes 0.50(2) of the proton spin, with almost all it coming from the disconnected insertion. The quark spin carries a fraction 0.25(12) and glue carries a fraction 0.25(8) of the total proton spin.

Flavour blindness and patterns of flavour symmetry breaking in lattice simulations of up, down and strange quarks

QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours (when two quark flavours are mass degenerate) typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass and then the up-down quark mass to its respective physical value. Here we discuss an alternative method of tuning the quark masses, in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed. Using group theory the possible quark mass polynomials for a Taylor expansion about the flavour symmetric line are found, first for the general 1+1+1 flavour case and then for the 2+1 flavour case. This ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. This method of tuning quark masses then enables highly constrained polynomial fits to be used in the extrapolation of hadron masses to their physical values. Numerical results for the 2+1 flavour case confirm the usefulness of this expansion and an extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives hadron mass values to within a few percent of their experimental values. Singlet quantities remain constant which allows the lattice spacing to be determined from hadron masses (without necessarily being at the physical point). Furthermore an extension of this programme to include partially quenched results is given.

Lattice QCD Applications on QPACE

QPACE is a novel massively parallel architecture optimized for lattice QCD simulations. A single QPACE node is based on the IBM PowerXCell 8i processor. The nodes are interconnected by a custom 3-dimensional torus network implemented on an FPGA. The compute power of the processor is provided by 8 Synergistic Processing Units. Making efficient use of these accelerator cores in scientific applications is challenging. In this paper we describe our strategies for porting applications to the QPACE architecture and report on performance numbers.

Exploring the Nucleon Structure from First Principles of QCD

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is generally assumed to be the fundamental theory underlying nuclear physics. In recent years there is progress towards investigating the nucleon structure from first principles of QCD. Although this structure is best revealed in Deep Inelastic Scattering, a consistent analysis has to be performed in a fully non-perturbative scheme. The only known method for this purpose are lattice simulations. We first sketch the ideas of Monte Carlo simulations in lattice gauge theory. Then we comment in particular on the issues of chiral symmetry and operator mixing. Finally we present our results for the Bjorken variable of a single quark, and for the second Nachtmann moment of the nucleon structure functions.

Flavour symmetry breaking and tuning the strange quark mass for 2+1 quark flavours

QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass to its physical value and then the up-down quark mass. An alternative method of tuning the quark masses is discussed here in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed, which ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. Using group theory the possible quark mass polynomials for a Taylor expansion about the flavour symmetric line are found, which enables highly constrained fits to be used in the extrapolation of hadrons to the physical pion mass. Numerical results confirm the usefulness of this expansion and an extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives hadron mass values to within a few percent of their experimental values.

Meson spectra from overlap fermion on domain wall gauge configurations

We report meson spectra obtained by using valence overlap fermion propagators generated on a background of 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 X 32, 24^3 X 64 and 32^3 X 64 lattices. We use many-to-all correlators with Z3 grid source and low eigenmode substitution which is efficient in reducing errors for the hadron correlators. The preliminary results on meson spectrum, a0 correlators, and charmonium hyperfine splitting for three sea quark masses are reported here.

Overlap Valence on 2+1 Flavor Domain Wall Fermion Configurations with Deflation and Low-mode Substitution

The overlap fermion propagator is calculated on 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 x 32, 24^3 x 64 and 32^3 x 64 lattices. With HYP smearing and low eigenmode deflation, it is shown that the inversion of the overlap operator can be expedited by ~ 20 times for the 16^3 x 32 lattice and ~ 80 times for the 32^3 x 64 lattice. Through the study of hyperfine splitting, we found that the O(m^2a^2) error is small and these dynamical fermion lattices can adequately accommodate quark mass up to the charm quark. The low energy constant Δ_{mix} which characterizes the discretization error of the pion made up of a pair of sea and valence quarks in this mixed action approach is calculated via the scalar correlator with periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions. It is found to be small which shifts a 300 MeV pion mass by ~ 10 to 19 MeV on these sets of lattices. We have studied the signal-to-noise issue of the noise source for the meson and baryon. It is found that the many-to-all meson and baryon correlators with Z_3 grid source and low eigenmode substitution is efficient in reducing errors for the correlators of both mesons and baryons. With 64-point Z_3 grid source and low-mode substitution, it can reduce the statistical errors of the light quark (m_π ~ 200 - 300 MeV) meson and nucleon correlators by a factor of ~ 3-4 as compared to the point source. The Z_3 grid source itself can reduce the errors of the charmonium correlators by a factor of ~ 3.

A Non-Perturbative Operator Product Expansion

Nucleon structure functions can be observed in Deep Inelastic Scattering experiments, but it is an outstanding challenge to confront them with fully non-perturbative QCD results. For this purpose we investigate the product of electromagnetic currents (with large photon momenta) between quark states (of low momenta). By means of an Operator Product Expansion the structure function can be decomposed into matrix elements of local operators, and Wilson coefficients. For consistency both have to be computed non-perturbatively. Here we present precision results for a set of Wilson coefficients. They are evaluated from propagators for numerous quark momenta on the lattice, where the use of chiral fermions suppresses undesired operator mixing. This over-determines the Wilson coefficients, but reliable results can be extracted by means of a Singular Value Decomposition.

QPACE -- a QCD parallel computer based on Cell processors

QPACE is a novel parallel computer which has been developed to be primarily used for lattice QCD simulations. The compute power is provided by the IBM PowerXCell 8i processor, an enhanced version of the Cell processor that is used in the Playstation 3. The QPACE nodes are interconnected by a custom, application optimized 3-dimensional torus network implemented on an FPGA. To achieve the very high packaging density of 26 TFlops per rack a new water cooling concept has been developed and successfully realized. In this paper we give an overview of the architecture and highlight some important technical details of the system. Furthermore, we provide initial performance results and report on the installation of 8 QPACE racks providing an aggregate peak performance of 200 TFlops.

The charmed-strange meson spectrum from overlap fermions on domain wall dynamical fermion configurations

The charmed-strange meson spectrum is calculated with the overlap valence fermions on 2+1 flavor domain wall dynamical configurations for $32^3\times 64$ lattices with a spatial size of 2.7 fm. Both charm and strange quark propagators are calculated with the overlap fermion action. The calculated scalar meson at 2304(22) MeV and axial-vector meson at 2546(27) MeV are in good agreement with the experimental masses of $D{s0}^*$(2317) and $D_{s1}$(2536).

Moments of Nucleon's Parton Distribution for the Sea and Valence Quarks from Lattice QCD

We extend the study of lowest moments, $<x>$ and $<x^2>$, of the parton distribution function of the nucleon to include those of the sea quarks; this entails a disconnected insertion calculation in lattice QCD. This is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice with Wilson fermion. The quark loops are calculated with $Z_2$ noise vectors and unbiased subtractions, and multiple nucleon sources are employed to reduce the statistical errors. We obtain 5$σ$ signals for $<x>$ for the $u,d,$ and $s$ quarks, but $<x^2>$ is consistent with zero within errors. We provide results for both the connected and disconnected insertions. The perturbatively renormalized $<x>$ for the strange quark at $μ= 2$ GeV is $<x>_{s+\bar{s}} = 0.027 \pm 0.006$ which is consistent with the experimental result. The ratio of $<x>$ for $s$ vs. $u/d$ in the disconnected insertion with quark loops is calculated to be $0.88 \pm 0.07$. This is about twice as large as the phenomenologically fitted $\displaystyle\frac{< x>_{s+\bar{s}}}{< x>_{\bar{u}}+< x>_{\bar{d}}}$ from experiments where $\bar{u}$ and $\bar{d}$ include both the connected and disconnected insertion parts. We discuss the source and implication of this difference.

We present a performance analysis of lattice QCD codes on QPACE and corresponding hardware benchmarks.

Non-perturbative renormalisation for overlap fermions

Using non-perturbative techniques we have found the renormalisation factor, Z, in the RI-MOM scheme for quark bilinear operators in quenched QCD. We worked with overlap fermions using the Luescher-Weisz gauge action. Our calculation was performed at beta=8.45 at a lattice spacing of 1/a=2.1 GeV using a value of rho=1.4. Our results show good agreement between the vector and the axial vector in the zero mass limit. This shows that overlap fermions have good chiral properties. To attempt to improve the discretisation errors in our results we subtracted the O(a^2) terms in one-loop lattice perturbation theory from the Monte Carlo Green functions. In particular we paid attention to the operators for the observable <x>. We found a value for the renormalisation constants Z^msbar_(v_2b) and Z^msbar_(v_2a) just less than 1.9 at mu=1/a=2.1 GeV.

Baryonic Flux in Quenched and Two-Flavor Dynamical QCD after Abelian projection

We study the distribution of color electric flux of the three-quark system in quenched and full QCD (with N_f = 2 flavors of dynamical quarks) at zero and finite temperature. To reduce ultra-violet fluctuations, the calculations are done in the abelian projected theory fixed to the maximally abelian gauge. In the confined phase we find clear evidence for a Y--shape flux tube surrounded and formed by the solenoidal monopole current, in accordance with the dual superconductor picture of confinement. In the deconfined, high temperature phase monopoles cease to condense, and the distribution of the color electric field becomes Coulomb--like.

The profile of the broken string in the confined and deconfined phase in full QCD

We study the profile of the broken string (flux tube) in the maximally abelian gauge below and above the finite temperature phase transition in full QCD. In the deconfinement phase, the flux tube disappears and the electric field apperas to be Coulomb-like. In the confinement phase, but near $T_c$, at shorter distances a flux tube is formed like at zero temperature, while at larger distances the tube disappears similar to the deconfinement phase.
