Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.cJ/ψ\to Λ\barΣ^0η+\mathrm{c.c}

Based on a sample of (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial-wave analysis of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c} is performed for the first time. The dominant contributions are found to be excited ΛΛ states with JP=1/2−J^P=1/2^- and JP=1/2+J^P=1/2^+ in the ηΛηΛ mass spectra. The measured masses and widths are M=1668.8±3.1±21.2M=1668.8\pm3.1\pm21.2 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=52.7±4.2±17.8Γ=52.7\pm4.2\pm17.8 MeV for the Λ(1670)Λ(1670), and M=1881.5±16.5±20.3M=1881.5\pm16.5\pm20.3 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=82.4±18.2±8.9Γ=82.4\pm18.2\pm8.9 MeV for the Λ(1810)Λ(1810), respectively. The branching fraction is determined to be B(J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c) \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c}) = (3.44±0.11±0.13)×10−5(3.44 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) from s=\sqrt{s}= 4.008 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with a total integrated luminosity of 22.1 fb−122.1~\rm fb^{-1} at center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.951~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, the cross sections of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) process are measured. The obtained cross sections are found to be approximately one-half of those of e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686), consistent with the isospin symmetry expectation. A coherent fit to the dressed cross sections is performed, with the Y(4230)Y(4230)~parameters fixed at the values measured in e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686). The significances of the Y(4390)Y(4390) and Y(4660)Y(4660) are both larger than 5σ5σ, and their masses and widths are consistent with the previous measurement in the e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686) process.

Evidence for the rare decay B+→Λˉpμ+μ−B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}

A search for the rare decay B+→Λˉpμ+μ−B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-} is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1^-1. An excess of events is found with respect to the background-only expectation, with a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations, in the low invariant-mass region of m(Λˉp)<2.8m(\bar Λp)<2.8 GeV/c2c^2. The branching fraction is measured to be Blow(B+→Λˉpμ+μ−)=(1.70−0.56+0.65(stat)±0.17(syst)±0.14(ext))×10−8{\cal B}_{\rm low}({B^{+}}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})=\left(1.70 ^{+0.65}_{-0.56}(\rm stat) \pm 0.17(\rm syst) \pm 0.14(\rm ext)\right) \times 10^{-8}, where the last uncertainty is due to external inputs on B(B+→J/ψΛˉp)×B(J/ψ→μ+μ−){\cal B}(B^+\to{J/ψ\bar Λp})\times {\cal B}({J/ψ}\to{μ^+μ^-}). With no significant signal observed in the high m(Λˉp)m(\bar Λp) region above 2.8 GeV/c2c^2, an upper limit is set to be Bhigh(B+→Λˉpμ+μ−)<2.8 (3.7)×10−9{\cal B}_{\rm high}(B^{+}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})<2.8\,(3.7) \times 10^{-9} at the 90%90\% (95%95\%) confidence level.

First Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ

We apply a tag-and-probe method to precisely measure the absolute branching fraction of the decay ηc→γγη_c \to γγ with the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. Starting with a large initial sample of 2712.4±14.32712.4\pm 14.3 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events, a sample of 0.16 million ηcη_c events are tagged via the golden channel ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\to π^0 h_c, hc→γηch_c\to γη_c, effectively avoiding interference effects. The absolute branching fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is measured for the first time to be B(ηc→γγ)=(2.45±0.48stat.±0.09syst.)×10−4\mathcal{B}(η_c \to γγ) = (2.45 \pm 0.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.09_{\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-4}. Using the world average value of the total width of the ηcη_c, the partial decay width of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is calculated to be Γ(ηc→γγ)=(7.48±1.48stat.±0.30syst.) keVΓ(η_c \to γγ) = (7.48 \pm 1.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.30_{\rm syst.})~{\rm keV}.

First Observation of D0(+)→Kˉωe+νeD^{0(+)}\to \bar Kωe^+ν_e and Determination of the Branching Fraction of Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω\bar K_1(1270)\to \bar K ω

Using 20.3~fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the semileptonic decays D0→K−ωe+νeD^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e and D+→KS0ωe+νeD^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e with significances of 8.0σ8.0σ and 5.8σ5.8σ, respectively, including systematic uncertainties. Their decay branching fractions are measured to be B(D0→K−ωe+νe)=(9.3−1.9+2.1±0.7)×10−5{\cal B}(D^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e)=(9.3^{+2.1}_{-1.9}\pm 0.7)\times10^{-5} and B(D+→KS0ωe+νe)=(6.6−1.8+2.0±0.6)×10−5{\cal B}(D^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e)=(6.6^{+2.0}_{-1.8}\pm 0.6)\times10^{-5}. Combining with the latest measurements of D0(+)→K−π+π−(0)e+νeD^{0(+)}\to K^-π^+π^{-(0)} e^+ν_e and assuming Kˉ1(1270)\bar{K}_1(1270) to be the sole mediating resonance in all processes, the branching ratios are determined to be Γ(K1(1270)−→K−π+π−)Γ(K1(1270)−→K−ω)=3.4−0.7+0.8±0.3\frac{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-π^+π^-)}{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-ω)} = 3.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7} \pm 0.3 and Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→K−π+π0)Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→Kˉ0ω)=9.6−2.7+3.0±0.8\frac{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to K^-π^+π^0)}{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to \bar{K}^0ω)} = 9.6^{+3.0}_{-2.7} \pm 0.8. The combined branching fraction is determined to be B(Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω)=(7.5±1.3±0.5)%\mathcal B(\bar{K}_1(1270)\to \bar{K}ω) = (7.5\pm 1.3 \pm 0.5)\%, which is the most precise measurement from a collider experiment. Measurement of transverse ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperon polarization in ppPb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

The transverse polarization of ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperons is measured in ppPb collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.025.02 TeV. The polarization is averaged over hyperon transverse momentum in the ranges 0.15<pT<6.000.15 < p_{T} < 6.00 GeV/cc, and Feynman-xx in the ranges 0.005<xF<0.0400.005 < x_{F} < 0.040 (forward region) and −0.10<xF<−0.01-0.10 < x_{F} < -0.01 (backward region) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The transverse polarization is found to be compatible with zero for both ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperons. The results are also measured as a function of pTp_{T} and xFx_{F} with no significant dependence on these variables observed. The results are compared with previous experimental measurements at different center-of-mass energies and collision environments.

Measurements of the absolute branching fractions of the Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decays

Based on 4.5 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4599.53 MeV and 4698.82 MeV with the BESIII detector, the absolute branching fractions of twelve Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decay modes are measured with a double-tag technique. A global least-square fit is implemented simultaneously among different decay modes at different energy points. This paper gives the most precise results on the branching fractions of different decay modes to date, with precision improved by a factor of 2 to 3. Among them, the branching fraction of Λc+→pK−π+Λ_{c}^{+}\to pK^{-}π^+ is determined to be (6.61±0.11±0.12)%(6.61\pm0.11\pm0.12)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the e+e−→Λc+Λˉc−e^+e^-\toΛ_c^+\barΛ_c^- Born cross sections and the effective form factors (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm eff}|) at different energy points have been determined with the highest precision to date.

Study of charm mixing and CP violation with D0→K±π∓π±π∓D^0\to K^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mp decays

A study of charm mixing and CP violation in D0→K±π∓π±π∓D^0\to K^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mp decays is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6fb−1\text{fb}^{-1}. The ratio of promptly produced D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^- π^+π^- to D0→K−π+π−π+D^0\to K^-π^+ π^-π^+ decay rates is measured as a function of D0D^0 decay time, both inclusive over phase space and in bins of phase space. Taking external inputs for the D0−D‾0D^0 -\overline{D}^0 mixing parameters xx and yy allows constraints to be obtained on the hadronic parameters of the charm decay. When combined with previous measurements from charm-threshold experiments and at LHCb, improved knowledge is obtained for these parameters, which is valuable for studies of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle. An alternative analysis is also performed, in which external inputs are taken for the hadronic parameters, and the mixing parameters are determined, including ΔxΔx and ΔyΔy, which are nonzero in the presence of CP violation. It is found that x=(0.85−0.24+0.15)%x=\left(0.85^{+0.15}_{-0.24}\right)\%, y=(0.21+0.29−0.27)%y=\left( 0.21^{+0.29}{-0.27} \right)\%, Δx=(−0.02±0.04)%Δx=\left( -0.02\pm {0.04} \right)\% and Δy=(0.02−0.03+0.04)%Δy=\left( 0.02^{+0.04}_{-0.03} \right)\%. These results are consistent with previous measurements and the hypothesis of CP conservation.

Coherent photoproduction of ρ0,ωρ^0, ω and excited vector mesons in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions

The invariant-mass distribution for the coherent photoproduction of dipions in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions is measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 224.6±9.6μ224.6 \pm 9.6 μb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV. In the mass range from 400 to 1200 MeV, the results are consistent with previous experiments, with the spectrum dominated by the ρ0ρ^0 meson, which interferes with a nonresonant component, together with a smaller ωω meson contribution. In an extended mass range up to 2300 MeV, models previously used do not fit the data and a consistent description requires the introduction of two resonances at masses of 1350±201350\pm20 MeV and 1790±201790\pm20 MeV with widths of about 300 MeV. The cross-section for each meson is measured differentially in twelve bins of rapidity from 2.05 to 4.90. The ρ0ρ^0 cross-section increases with rapidity from about 400 to 600 mb and is measured with a typical precision of 8\%, while the cross-section times branching fraction for the ω,ρ′ω,ρ^\prime and ρ′′ρ^{\prime\prime}, with the statistical precision of the data, do not have a pronounced rapidity dependence and are between 0.5 and 1.5 mb, with uncertainties up to 30\%. A large nuclear suppression is observed for the ρ0ρ^0 meson compared to expectations based on photoproduction on the proton that use the impulse approximation. Significant suppression is also observed compared to that predicted by elastic scattering described in the Glauber approach, or with the addition of inelastic scattering in a Gribov--Glauber model.

Investigation of the ΔI=1/2ΔI = 1/2 rule and test of CP violation through the measurement of decay asymmetry parameters in Ξ−Ξ^- decays

Using (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, numerous Ξ−Ξ^- and ΛΛ decay asymmetry parameters are simultaneously determined from the process J/ψ→Ξ−Ξˉ+→Λ(pπ−)π−Λˉ(nˉπ0)π+J/ψ\to Ξ^- \barΞ^+ \to Λ(pπ^-) π^- \barΛ(\bar{n} π^0) π^+ and its charge-conjugate channel. The precisions of α0α_0 for Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 and αˉ0\barα_0 for Λˉ→nˉπ0\barΛ \to \bar{n}π^0 compared to world averages are improved by factors of 4 and 1.7, respectively. The ratio of decay asymmetry parameters of Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 to that of Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, ⟨α0⟩/⟨αΛ−⟩\langle α_0 \rangle/ \langle α_{Λ-} \rangle , is determined to be 0.873±0.012−0.010+0.011 0.873 \pm 0.012^{+0.011}_{-0.010}, where the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Beside, we test for CP violation in Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^- \to Λπ^- and in Λ→nπ0Λ\to n π^{0} with the best precision to date.

Longitudinal and transverse spin transfer to ΛΛ and Λ‾\overlineΛ hyperons in polarized pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to ΛΛ (Λ‾\overlineΛ) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti-)strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, DLLD_{LL}, and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, DTTD_{TT}, to ΛΛ and Λ‾\overlineΛ in polarized proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The data set includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb−1^{-1}, and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both data sets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of ∣ηΛ(Λ‾)∣|η_{Λ(\overlineΛ)}| << 1.2 and transverse momentum pT,Λ(Λ‾)p_{T,{Λ(\overlineΛ)}} up to 8 GeV/cc. We also report the first measurements of the hyperon spin transfer coefficients DLLD_{LL} and DTTD_{TT} as a function of the fractional jet momentum zz carried by the hyperon, which can provide more direct constraints on the polarized fragmentation functions.

Pattern of Global Spin Alignment of ϕϕ and K∗0K^{*0} mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Notwithstanding decades of progress since Yukawa first developed a description of the force between nucleons in terms of meson exchange, a full understanding of the strong interaction remains a major challenge in modern science. One remaining difficulty arises from the non-perturbative nature of the strong force, which leads to the phenomenon of quark confinement at distances on the order of the size of the proton. Here we show that in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, where quarks and gluons are set free over an extended volume, two species of produced vector (spin-1) mesons, namely ϕϕ and K∗0K^{*0}, emerge with a surprising pattern of global spin alignment. In particular, the global spin alignment for ϕϕ is unexpectedly large, while that for K∗0K^{*0} is consistent with zero. The observed spin-alignment pattern and magnitude for the ϕϕ cannot be explained by conventional mechanisms, while a model with a connection to strong force fields, i.e. an effective proxy description within the Standard Model and Quantum Chromodynamics, accommodates the current data. This connection, if fully established, will open a potential new avenue for studying the behaviour of strong force fields.

Search for hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness in e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow K^+ D_{s}^{*-} D^{*0}+c.c.

We report a search for a heavier partner of the recently observed Zcs(3985)−Z_{cs}(3985)^{-} state, denoted as Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -}, in the process e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow K^{+}D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}+c.c., based on e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies of s=4.661\sqrt{s}=4.661, 4.682 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector. The Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} is of interest as it is expected to be a candidate for a hidden-charm and open-strange tetraquark. A partial-reconstruction technique is used to isolate K+K^+ recoil-mass spectra, which are probed for a potential contribution from Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\to D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0} (c.c.c.c.). We find an excess of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{*0} (c.c.c.c.) candidates with a significance of 2.1σ2.1σ, after considering systematic uncertainties, at a mass of (4123.5±0.7stat.±4.7syst.) MeV/c2(4123.5\pm0.7_\mathrm{stat.}\pm4.7_\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}. As the data set is limited in size, the upper limits are evaluated at the 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross sections (σBornσ^{\mathrm{Born}}) and the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime-}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}, under different assumptions of the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} mass from 4.120 to 4.140 MeV and of the width from 10 to 50 MeV at the three center-of-mass energies. The upper limits of σBorn⋅Bσ^{\rm Born}\cdot\mathcal{B} are found to be at the level of O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) pb at each energy. Larger data samples are needed to confirm the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} state and clarify its nature in the coming years.

The results significantly improve previous measurements and are compared to the latest theoretical prediction.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay Ds+→K+π+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^+π^+π^-

Using 6.326.32 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay Ds+→K+π+π−D^+_s \to K^+π^+π^- and determine the amplitudes of the various intermediate states. The absolute branching fraction of Ds+→K+π+π−D^+_s\to K^+π^+π^- is measured to be (6.11±0.18stat.±0.11syst.)×10−36.11\pm0.18_{\rm stat.}\pm0.11_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}. The branching fractions of the dominant intermediate processes Ds+→K+ρ0,ρ0→π+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^+ρ^0, ρ^0 \to π^+π^- and Ds+→K∗(892)0π+,K∗(892)0→K+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^*(892)^0π^+, K^*(892)^0 \to K^+π^- are determined to be (1.96±0.19stat.±0.23syst.)×10−3(1.96\pm0.19_{\rm stat.}\pm0.23_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3} and (1.85±0.12stat.±0.13syst.)×10−3(1.85\pm0.12_{\rm stat.}\pm0.13_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}, respectively. The intermediate resonances f0(500)f_0(500), f0(980)f_0(980), and f0(1370)f_0(1370) are observed for the first time in this channel.

Amplitude analysis and branching-fraction measurement of Ds+→π+π0η′D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+}π^{0}η^{\prime}

Using data collected with the BESIII detector in e+e−e^+e^- collisions at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV and corresponding to 6.32~fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity, we report the amplitude analysis and branching-fraction measurement of the Ds+→π+π0η′D^+_s \to π^+ π^0 η^{\prime} decay. We find that the dominant intermediate process is Ds+→ρ+η′D^+_s \toρ^+ η^{\prime} and the significances of other resonant and nonresonant processes are all less than 3σ3σ. The upper limits on the branching fractions of SS-wave and PP-wave nonresonant components are set to 0.10%0.10\% and 0.74%0.74\% at the 90%90\% confidence level, respectively. In addition, the branching fraction of the Ds+→π+π0η′D^+_s \to π^+ π^0 η^{\prime} decay is measured to be (6.15±0.25(stat.)±0.18(syst.))%(6.15\pm0.25(\rm stat.)\pm0.18(\rm syst.))\%, which receives significant contribution only from Ds+→ρ+η′D_s^+\to ρ^+η^{\prime} according to the amplitude analysis.

Analysis of neutral BB-meson decays into two muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and searches for the decays B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 TeV, 88 TeV and 1313 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. The branching fraction B(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(3.09−0.43−0.11+0.46+0.15)×10−9{\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9} and the effective lifetime τ(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(2.07±0.29±0.03)τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03) are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ decays is found and upper limits B(B0→μ+μ−)<2.6×10−10\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10} and B(Bs0→μ+μ−γ)<2.0×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9} at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range mμμ>4.9m_{μμ} > 4.9 GeV/c2/c^2. Angular analysis of D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays and search for CPCP violation

The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CPCP asymmetry of the D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The full set of CPCP-averaged angular observables and their CPCP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with CPCP symmetry.

Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV

We present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v2v_{2}, v3v_{3}, and v4v_{4}, respectively, at midrapidity (∣η∣<1.0|η|<1.0) for identified hadrons ππ, pp, KK, φφ, KsK_s, ΛΛ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}= 200 GeV. We observe similar vnv_{n} trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v2v_{2}, v3v_{3}, and v4v_{4} is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0-10%\%, 10-40%\% and 40-80%\% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Collision energy dependence of second-order off-diagonal and diagonal cumulants of net-charge, net-proton and net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions

We report the first measurements of a complete second-order cumulant matrix of net-charge, net-proton, and net-kaon multiplicity distributions for the first phase of the beam energy scan program at RHIC. This includes the centrality and, for the first time, the pseudorapidity window dependence of both diagonal and off-diagonal cumulants in Au+Au collisions at \sNN~= 7.7-200 GeV. Within the available acceptance of ∣η∣<0.5|η|<0.5, the cumulants grow linearly with the pseudorapidity window. Relative to the corresponding measurements in peripheral collisions, the ratio of off-diagonal over diagonal cumulants in central collisions indicates an excess correlation between net-charge and net-kaon, as well as between net-charge and net-proton. The strength of such excess correlation increases with the collision energy. The correlation between net-proton and net-kaon multiplicity distributions is observed to be negative at \sNN~= 200 GeV and change to positive at the lowest collision energy. Model calculations based on non-thermal (UrQMD) and thermal (HRG) production of hadrons cannot explain the data. These measurements will help map the QCD phase diagram, constrain hadron resonance gas model calculations, and provide new insights on the energy dependence of baryon-strangeness correlations. An erratum has been added to address the issue of self-correlation in the previously considered efficiency correction for off-diagonal cumulant measurement. Previously considered unidentified (net-)charge correlation results (σQ,p11σ^{11}_{Q,p} and σQ,k11)σ^{11}_{Q,k}) are now replaced with identified (net-)charge correlation (σQPID,p11σ^{11}_{Q^{PID},p} and σQPID,k11σ^{11}_{Q^{PID},k})

Constraints on the CKM angle γγ from B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays using D→h±h′∓π0D\rightarrow h^\pm h^{\prime\mp}π^0 final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} is used to measure eleven CPCP violation observables in B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays, where hh is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral DD meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K±π∓π0K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0}; π+π−π0π^+π^-π^0; K+K−π0K^+K^-π^0 and the suppressed π±K∓π0π^\pm K^\mpπ^0 combination. The mode where a large CPCP asymmetry is expected, B±→[π±K∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B±→[K±π∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm, is RADS(K)=(1.27±0.16±0.02)×10−2R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}. Evidence for a large CPCP asymmetry is also seen: AADS(K)=−0.38±0.12±0.02A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γγ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

Differential measurements of jet substructure and partonic energy loss in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} =200 GeV

The STAR collaboration presents jet substructure measurements related to both the momentum fraction and the opening angle within jets in \pp and \AuAu collisions at \sqrtsn =200= 200 GeV. The substructure observables include SoftDrop groomed momentum fraction (\zg), groomed jet radius (\rg), and subjet momentum fraction (\zsj) and opening angle (\tsj). The latter observable is introduced for the first time. Fully corrected subjet measurements are presented for \pp collisions and are compared to leading order Monte Carlo models. The subjet \tsj~distributions reflect the jets leading opening angle and are utilized as a proxy for the resolution scale of the medium in \AuAu collisions. We compare data from \AuAu collisions to those from \pp which are embedded in minimum-bias \AuAu events in order to include the effects of detector smearing and the heavy-ion collision underlying event. The subjet observables are shown to be more robust to the background than \zg~and \rg. We observe no significant modifications of the subjet observables within the two highest-energy, back-to-back jets, resulting in a distribution of opening angles and the splittings that are vacuum-like. We also report measurements of the differential di-jet momentum imbalance (AJA_{\rm{J}}) for jets of varying \tsj. We find no qualitative differences in energy loss signatures for varying angular scales in the range 0.1<0.1 < \tsj <0.3 < 0.3, leading to the possible interpretation that energy loss in this population of high momentum di-jet pairs, is due to soft medium-induced gluon radiation from a single color-charge as it traverses the medium.

Disappearance of partonic collectivity in sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We report on the measurements of directed flow v1v_1 and elliptic flow v2v_2 for hadrons (π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, KS0K_{S}^0, pp, ϕϕ, ΛΛ and Ξ−Ξ^{-}) from Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3\,GeV and v2v_{2} for (π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, pp and p‾\overline{p}) at 27 and 54.4\,GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3\,GeV the v2v_{2} at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1v_1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2v_2 and positive v1v_1 slope at 3\,GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.

Evidence for Nonlinear Gluon Effects in QCD and their AA Dependence at STAR

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of back-to-back azimuthal correlations of di-π0π^0s produced at forward pseudorapidities (2.6<η<4.02.6<η<4.0) in pp+pp, p+p+Al, and p+p+Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. We observe a clear suppression of the correlated yields of back-to-back π0π^0 pairs in p+p+Al and p+p+Au collisions compared to the pp+pp data. The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of transverse momentum suggests nonlinear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities. The larger suppression found in p+p+Au relative to p+p+Al collisions exhibits a dependence of the saturation scale, Qs2Q_s^2, on the mass number, AA. A linear scaling of the suppression with A1/3A^{1/3} is observed with a slope of −0.09-0.09 ±\pm 0.010.01.

First Combined Study on LIV from Observations of Energy-dependent Time Delays from Multiple-type Gamma-ray Sources -- Part I. Motivation, Method Description and Validation through Simulations of H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS Datasets

Gamma-ray astronomy has become one of the main experimental ways to test the modified dispersion relations (MDRs) of photons in vacuum, obtained in some attempts to formulate a theory of Quantum Gravity. The MDRs in use imply time delays which depend on the energy, and which increase with distance following some function of redshift. The use of transient, or variable, distant and highly energetic sources, already allows us to set stringent limits on the energy scale related to this phenomenon, usually thought to be of the order of the Planck energy, but robust conclusions on the existence of MDR-related propagation effects still require the analysis of a large population of sources. In order to gather the biggest sample of sources possible for MDR searches at teraelectronvolt energies, the H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS collaborations enacted a joint task force to combine all their relevant data to constrain the Quantum Gravity energy scale. In the present article, the likelihood method used, to combine the data and provide a common limit, is described in detail and tested through simulations of recorded data sets for a gamma-ray burst, three flaring active galactic nuclei and two pulsars. Statistical and systematic errors are assessed and included in the likelihood as nuisance parameters. In addition, a comparison of two different formalisms for distance dependence of the time lags is performed for the first time. In a second article, to appear later, the method will be applied on all relevant data from the three experiments.

First measurement of the Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- angular coefficients in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the ZZ-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

Global ΛΛ-hyperon polarization in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=3 GeV

Global hyperon polarization, P‾H\overline{P}_\mathrm{H}, in Au+Au collisions over a large range of collision energy, sNN\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}, was recently measured and successfully reproduced by hydrodynamic and transport models with intense fluid vorticity of the quark-gluon plasma. While naïve extrapolation of data trends suggests a large P‾H\overline{P}_\mathrm{H} as the collision energy is reduced, the behavior of P‾H\overline{P}_\mathrm{H} at small sNN<7.7\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}<7.7 GeV is unknown. Operating the STAR experiment in fixed-target mode, we measured the polarization of ΛΛ hyperons along the direction of global angular momentum in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=3 GeV. The observation of substantial polarization of 4.91±0.81(stat.)±0.15(syst.)4.91\pm0.81(\rm stat.)\pm0.15(\rm syst.)% in these collisions may require a reexamination of the viscosity of any fluid created in the collision, of the thermalization timescale of rotational modes, and of hadronic mechanisms to produce global polarization.

Identification of charm jets at LHCb

The identification of charm jets is achieved at LHCb for data collected in 2015-2018 using a method based on the properties of displaced vertices reconstructed and matched with jets. The performance of this method is determined using a dijet calibration dataset recorded by the LHCb detector and selected such that the jets are unbiased in quantities used in the tagging algorithm. The charm-tagging efficiency is reported as a function of the transverse momentum of the jet. The measured efficiencies are compared to those obtained from simulation and found to be in good agreement.

Light Nuclei Collectivity from sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1v_1 and v2v_2, of light nuclei (dd, tt, 3^{3}He, 4^{4}He) produced in sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1v_1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2v_2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2v_2 at higher collision energies, the v2v_2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized proton collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

We report measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALLA_{LL}, for inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at midrapidity and center-of-mass energy s\sqrt{s} = 510 GeV, using the high luminosity data sample collected by the STAR experiment in 2013. These measurements complement and improve the precision of previous STAR measurements at the same center-of-mass energy that probe the polarized gluon distribution function at partonic momentum fraction 0.015 ≲x≲\lesssim x \lesssim 0.25. The dijet asymmetries are separated into four jet-pair topologies, which provide further constraints on the xx dependence of the polarized gluon distribution function. These measurements are in agreement with previous STAR measurements and with predictions from current next-to-leading order global analyses. They provide more precise data at low dijet invariant mass that will better constraint the shape of the polarized gluon distribution function of the proton.

Measurement of e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} cross section and observation of a resonant structure

Based on e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}. The Born cross section of the process e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} and its subprocesses e+e−→ϕπ0e^{+}e^{-} \to ϕπ^{0}, K∗(892)KK^{*}(892)K and K2∗(1430)KK^{*}_{2}(1430)K are measured. The results for e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} and ϕπ0ϕπ^{0} are consistent with the BaBar measurements and with improved precision. By analyzing the cross section, of the subprocesses e+e−→e^{+}e^{-} \to K∗(892)KK^{*}(892)K and K2∗(1430)KK^{*}_{2}(1430)K, a structure with mass MRM_R = (2208 ±\pm 19 ±\pm 24) MeV/c2c^{2} and width ΓRΓ_R = (168 ±\pm 24 ±\pm 39) MeV is observed with a combined statistical significance of 7.6σσ. Measurement of ΛΛ baryon polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV

Using a data sample of ψ(3770)ψ(3770) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb−1^{-1}, we report a measurement of ΛΛ spin polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV. The significance of polarization is found to be 2σσ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the ΛΛˉΛ\barΛ helicity states. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy, in the kinematic range 4<pT<204 < p_{\rm T} < 20 GeV/cc and 2.0<y<4.52.0 < y < 4.5. The prompt ratio is found to increase with pTp_{\rm T} independently of yy. The double-differential cross-section ratio of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) relative to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of pTp_{\rm T} and centre-of-mass energy.

Measurement of cold nuclear matter effects for inclusive J/ψJ/ψ in pp+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200 GeV

Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J/ψJ/ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100\% pp+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}}, obtained by taking a ratio of J/ψJ/ψ yield in pp+Au collisions to that in pp+pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J/ψJ/ψ yield in both pp+pp and pp+Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J/ψJ/ψ RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}} is derived within the transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm{T}}) range of 0 to 10 GeV/cc. A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for pT<2p_{\mathrm{T}}<2 GeV/cc, while J/ψJ/ψ RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}} becomes compatible with unity for pTp_{\mathrm{T}} greater than 3 GeV/cc, indicating the J/ψJ/ψ yield is minimally affected by the CNM effects at high pTp_{\mathrm{T}}. Comparison to a similar measurement from 0-20% central Au+Au collisions reveals that the observed strong J/ψJ/ψ suppression above 3 Gev/cc is mostly due to the hot medium effects, providing strong evidence for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in these collisions. Several model calculations show qualitative agreement with the measured J/ψJ/ψ RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}}, while their agreement with the J/ψJ/ψ yields in pp+pp and pp+Au collisions is worse.

Measurement of inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays in pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with the STAR detector

We report a new measurement of the production cross section for inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) at mid-rapidity (∣y∣<|y|< 0.7) in pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The result is presented for 2.5 <pT<<p_{\rm T}< 10 GeV/cc with an improved precision above 6 GeV/cc with respect to the previous measurements, providing more constraints on perturbative QCD calculations. Moreover, this measurement also provides a high-precision reference for measurements of nuclear modification factors for inclusive electrons from open-charm and -bottom hadron decays in heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of prompt charged-particle production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV

The differential cross-section of prompt inclusive production of long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions is measured using a data sample recorded by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV{\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}}. The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 nb−1{5.4\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}}. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges pT∈[0.08,10) GeV c−1{p_\mathrm{T} \in [0.08, 10)\,\mathrm{GeV}\,c^{-1}} and η∈[2.0,4.8){η\in [2.0, 4.8)} and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.

No significant signal for B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ decays is found and the upper limits B(B0→μ+μ−)<2.6×10−10\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10} and B(Bs0→μ+μ−γ)<2.0×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9} at 95% confidence level are determined, where the latter is limited to the range mμμ>4.9m_{μμ} > 4.9 GeV/c2/c^2. The branching fraction of D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 is determined to be [3.13−0.56+0.60(stat)±0.09(syst)]×10−4[3.13^{+0.60}_{-0.56}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09({\rm syst})] \times 10^{-4}. No signal is observed for D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0 and an upper limit of 3.6×10−43.6 \times 10^{-4} is set on the branching fraction at the 90\% C.L. Measurement of the lifetimes of promptly produced Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons

A measurement of the lifetimes of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons is reported using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\text{ TeV}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4\text{ fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the pK−K−π+pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+} final state. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 276.5±13.4±4.4±0.7 fs276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}, and the Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 148.0±2.3±2.2±0.2 fs148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the D0D^{0} lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor and prompt charged particle production in pPbp\mathrm{Pb} and pppp collisions at sNN=5 TeV\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5 TeV{\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}} is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity (ηη) and transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm{T}}) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of ηη between −4.8<η<−2.5{-4.8<η<-2.5} (backward region) and 2.0<η<4.8{2.0<η<4.8} (forward region), and pTp_{\mathrm{T}} between 0.2<pT<8.0 GeV/c{0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for pTp_{\mathrm{T}} larger than 1.5 GeV/c1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to 10−610^{-6}.

Measurement of the total and leptonic decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance with an energy scan method at BESIII

Using e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data sets collected with the BESIII detector, we measure the cross sections of the processes e+e−→e+e−e^+e^- \to e^+e^- and e+e−→μ+μ−e^+e^- \to μ^+μ^- at fifteen center-of-mass energy points in the vicinity of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance. By a simultaneous fit to the measured, center-of-mass energy dependent cross sections of the two processes, the combined quantities ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} are determined to be (0.346±0.0090.346 \pm 0.009) and (0.335±0.0060.335 \pm 0.006) keV, respectively, where ΓeeΓ_{ee}, ΓμμΓ_{μμ}, and ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} are the electronic, muonic, and total decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance, respectively. Using the resultant ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot}, the ratio Γee/ΓμμΓ_{ee} / Γ_{μμ} is calculated to be 1.031±0.0151.031 \pm 0.015, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton universality within about two standard deviations. Assuming lepton universality and using the branching fraction of the J/ψJ/ψ leptonic decay measured by BESIII in 2013, ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} and ΓllΓ_{ll} are determined to be (93.0±2.193.0 \pm 2.1) and (5.56±0.115.56 \pm 0.11) keV, respectively, where ΓllΓ_{ll} is the average leptonic decay width of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance.

Measurement of the W boson mass

The WW boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1^{-1} recorded during 2016 by the LHCb experiment. With a simultaneous fit of the muon q/pTq/p_T distribution of a sample of W→μνW \to μν decays and the ϕ∗ϕ^* distribution of a sample of Z→μμZ\toμμ decays the WW boson mass is determined to be \begin{equation*} m_{W} = 80354 \pm 23_{\rm stat} \pm 10_{\rm exp} \pm 17_{\rm theory} \pm 9_{\rm PDF}~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{equation*} where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. The measurement agrees well with the prediction of the global electroweak fit and with previous measurements.

Measurements of Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} Lifetimes and Yields in Au+Au Collisions in the High Baryon Density Region

We report precision measurements of hypernuclei Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} lifetimes obtained from Au+Au collisions at \snn = 3.0\,GeV and 7.2\,GeV collected by the STAR experiment at RHIC, and the first measurement of Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} mid-rapidity yields in Au+Au collisions at \snn = 3.0\,GeV. Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H}, being the two simplest bound states composed of hyperons and nucleons, are cornerstones in the field of hypernuclear physics. Their lifetimes are measured to be 221±15(stat.)±19(syst.)221\pm15(\rm stat.)\pm19(\rm syst.)\,ps for Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and 218±6(stat.)±13(syst.)218\pm6(\rm stat.)\pm13(\rm syst.)\,ps for Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H}. The pTp_T-integrated yields of Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} are presented in different centrality and rapidity intervals. It is observed that the shape of the rapidity distribution of Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} is different for 0--10\% and 10--50\% centrality collisions. Thermal model calculations, using the canonical ensemble for strangeness, describes the Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} yield well, while underestimating the Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} yield. Transport models, combining baryonic mean-field and coalescence (JAM) or utilizing dynamical cluster formation via baryonic interactions (PHQMD) for light nuclei and hypernuclei production, approximately describe the measured Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} yields. Our measurements provide means to precisely assess our understanding of the fundamental baryonic interactions with strange quarks, which can impact our understanding of more complicated systems involving hyperons, such as the interior of neutron stars or exotic hypernuclei.

Measurements of Proton High Order Cumulants in 3 GeV Au+Au Collisions and Implications for the QCD Critical Point

We report cumulants of the proton multiplicity distribution from dedicated fixed-target Au+Au collisions at 3.0 GeV, measured by the STAR experiment in the kinematic acceptance of rapidity (yy) and transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) within −0.5<y<0-0.5 < y<0 and 0.4<pT<2.00.4 < p_{\rm T} <2.0 GeV/cc. In the most central 0--5\% collisions, a proton cumulant ratio is measured to be C4/C2=−0.85±0.09 (stat.)±0.82 (syst.)C_4/C_2=-0.85 \pm 0.09 ~(\rm stat.) \pm 0.82 ~(\rm syst.), which is less than unity, the Poisson baseline. The hadronic transport UrQMD model reproduces our C4/C2C_4/C_2 in the measured acceptance. Compared to higher energy results and the transport model calculations, the suppression in C4/C2C_4/C_2 is consistent with fluctuations driven by baryon number conservation and indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions. These data imply that the QCD critical region, if created in heavy-ion collisions, could only exist at energies higher than 3\,GeV.

Using e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.32 fb−1^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 GeV and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform the first amplitude analysis of the decay Ds+→KS0K+π0D_s^+\to K_S^0K^+π^0 and determine the relative branching fractions and phases for intermediate processes. We observe the a0(1710)+a_0(1710)^+, the isovector partner of the f0(1710)f_0(1710) and f0(1770)f_0(1770) mesons, in its decay to KS0K+K_S^0K^+ for the first time. In addition, we measure the ratio B(Ds+→Kˉ∗(892)0K+)B(Ds+→Kˉ0K∗(892)+)\frac{\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+} \to \bar{K}^{*}(892)^{0}K^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+} \to \bar{K}^{0}K^{*}(892)^{+})} to be 2.35−0.23stat.+0.42±0.10syst.2.35^{+0.42}_{-0.23\text{stat.}}\pm 0.10_{\rm syst.}. Finally, we provide a precision measurement of the absolute branching fraction B(Ds+→KS0K+π0)=(1.46±0.06stat.±0.05syst.)%\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0K^+π^0) = (1.46\pm 0.06_{\text{stat.}}\pm 0.05_{\text{syst.}})\%.

The hadronic decay ηc(2S)→3(π+π−)η_c(2S) \to 3(π^+π^-) is observed with a statistical significance of 9.3 standard deviations using (448.1±2.9)×106(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The measured mass and width of ηc(2S)η_c(2S) are (3643.4±2.3(stat.)±4.4(syst.))(3643.4 \pm 2.3 (\rm stat.) \pm 4.4 (\rm syst.)) Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. The observation of a new type of hadronic state, a doubly charmed tetraquark containing two charm quarks, an anti-uu and an anti-dd quark, is reported using data collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This exotic state with a mass of about 3875 MeV/c2/c^2 manifests itself as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mesons just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold. The near threshold mass together with a strikingly narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Observation of resonance structures in e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) and mass measurement of ψ2(3823)ψ_2(3823)

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.3 fb−1\rm fb^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.234.23 to 4.704.70 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the product of the e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) cross section and the branching fraction B[ψ2(3823)→γχc1]\mathcal{B}[ψ_2(3823)\to γχ_{c1}]. For the first time, resonance structure is observed in the cross section line shape of e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) with significances exceeding 5σ5σ. A fit to data with two coherent Breit-Wigner resonances modeling the s\sqrt{s}-dependent cross section yields M(R1)=4406.9±17.2±4.5M(R_1)=4406.9\pm 17.2\pm 4.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R1)=128.1±37.2±2.3Γ(R_1)=128.1\pm 37.2\pm 2.3 MeV, and M(R2)=4647.9±8.6±0.8M(R_2)=4647.9\pm 8.6\pm 0.8 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R2)=33.1±18.6±4.1Γ(R_2)=33.1\pm 18.6\pm 4.1 MeV. Though weakly disfavored by the data, a single resonance with M(R)=4417.5±26.2±3.5M(R)=4417.5\pm26.2\pm3.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R)=245±48±13Γ(R)=245\pm48\pm13 MeV is also possible to interpret data. This observation deepens our understanding of the nature of the vector charmoniumlike states. The mass of the ψ2(3823)ψ_2(3823) state is measured as (3823.12±0.43±0.13)(3823.12\pm 0.43\pm 0.13) MeV/c2c^2, which is the most precise measurement to date.

Observation of the B0→D‾∗0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{-}π^{+} decays

The first observations of B0→D‾∗(2007)0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗(2007)0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+} decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D‾∗(2007)0π+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-} decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle γγ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γγ from B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+} and B0→DK+π−B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-} decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collision data at 13 TeV13 ~\rm{TeV} centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D‾∗(2007)0\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0} mesons are fully reconstructed in the D‾0π0\overline{D}^{0}π^{0} and D‾0γ\overline{D}^{0}γ channels, with the D‾0→K+π−\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-} decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.

Observation of the Singly Cabibbo-Suppressed Decay Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+}

The singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 7.3σ7.3σ by using 3.9 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.612 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. The branching fraction of Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} is measured to be (6.6±1.2stat±0.4syst)×10−4(6.6\pm1.2_{\rm stat}\pm0.4_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}. By taking the upper limit of branching fractions of Λc+→pπ0Λ_{c}^{+} \to pπ^0 from the Belle experiment, the ratio of branching fractions between Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} and Λc+→pπ0Λ_{c}^{+} \to pπ^0 is calculated to be larger than 7.2 at the 90% confidence level, which disagrees with the current predictions of available phenomenological models. In addition, the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored decays Λc+→Λπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^{+} and Λc+→Σ0π+Λ_{c}^{+} \to Σ^{0}π^{+} are measured to be (1.31±0.08stat±0.05syst)×10−2(1.31\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.05_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2} and (1.22±0.08stat±0.07syst)×10−2(1.22\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.07_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2}, respectively, which are consistent with previous results.

Observation of the suppressed Λb0→DpK−Λ_b^0\to D p K^- decay with D→K+π−D\to K^+ π^- and measurement of its C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry

A study of Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon decays to the DpK−DpK^- final state is presented based on a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. Two Λb0Λ_b^0 decays are considered, Λb0→DpK−Λ_b^0\to DpK^- with D→K−π+D\to K^-π^+ and D→K+π−D\to K^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 states. The latter process is expected to be suppressed relative to the former, and is observed for the first time. The ratio of branching fractions of the two decays is measured, and the C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the suppressed mode, which is sensitive to the CKM angle γγ, is also reported.

Observation of two new excited Ξb0{\itΞ}_b^0 states decaying to Λb0K−π+{\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+

Two narrow resonant states are observed in the Λb0K−π+{\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+ mass spectrum using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV~\rm TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−16~{\rm fb}^{-1}. The minimal quark content of the Λb0K−π+{\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+ system indicates that these are excited Ξb0{\itΞ}_b^0 baryons. The masses of the Ξb(6327)0{\itΞ}_b(6327)^0 and Ξb(6333)0{\itΞ}_b(6333)^0 states are m(Ξb(6327)0)=6327.28 − 0.21 + 0.23±0.12±0.24 MeVm({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0) = 6327.28 ^{\,+\,0.23}_{\,-\,0.21} \pm 0.12 \pm 0.24~{\rm MeV} and m(Ξb(6333)0)=6332.69 − 0.18 + 0.17±0.03±0.22 MeVm({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0) = 6332.69 ^{\,+\,0.17}_{\,-\,0.18} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.22~{\rm MeV}, respectively, with a mass splitting of Δm=5.41 − 0.27 + 0.26±0.12 MeVΔm = 5.41 ^{\,+\,0.26}_{\,-\,0.27} \pm 0.12 ~{\rm MeV}, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the Λb0{\itΛ}_b^0 mass measurement. The measured natural widths of these states are consistent with zero, with upper limits of Γ(Ξb(6327)0)<2.20 (2.56) MeVΓ({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0)<2.20~(2.56) ~{\rm MeV} and Γ(Ξb(6333)0)<1.60 (1.92) MeVΓ({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0)<1.60~(1.92) ~{\rm MeV} at a 90% (95%)90\%~(95\%) credibility level. The significance of the two-peak hypothesis is larger than nine (five) Gaussian standard deviations compared to the no-peak (one-peak) hypothesis. The masses, widths and resonant structure of the new states are in good agreement with the expectations for a doublet of 1DD Ξb0{\itΞ}_b^0 resonances.

Precise determination of the B0s-B0sbar oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

Probing Strangeness Canonical Ensemble with K−K^{-}, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) and Ξ−Ξ^{-} Production in Au+Au Collisions at sNN=3 GeV{\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = \rm{3\,GeV}}

We report the first multi-differential measurements of strange hadrons of K−K^{-}, ϕϕ and Ξ−Ξ^{-} yields as well as the ratios of ϕ/K−ϕ/K^- and ϕ/Ξ−ϕ/Ξ^- in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV{\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = \rm{3\,GeV}} with the STAR experiment fixed target configuration at RHIC. The ϕϕ mesons and Ξ−Ξ^{-} hyperons are measured through hadronic decay channels, ϕ→K+K−ϕ\rightarrow K^+K^- and Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\rightarrow Λπ^-. Collision centrality and rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum spectra for these strange hadrons are presented. The 4π4π yields and ratios are compared to thermal model and hadronic transport model predictions. At this collision energy, thermal model with grand canonical ensemble (GCE) under-predicts the ϕ/K−ϕ/K^- and ϕ/Ξ−ϕ/Ξ^- ratios while the result of canonical ensemble (CE) calculations reproduce ϕ/K−ϕ/K^-, with the correlation length rc∼2.7r_c \sim 2.7\,fm, and ϕ/Ξ−ϕ/Ξ^-, rc∼4.2r_c \sim 4.2\,fm, for the 0-10\% central collisions. Hadronic transport models including high mass resonance decays could also describe the ratios. While thermal calculations with GCE work well for strangeness production in high energy collisions, the change to CE at 3 GeV\rm{3\,GeV} implies a rather different medium property at high baryon density.

Probing the gluonic structure of the deuteron with J/ψJ/ψ photoproduction in d+Au ultra-peripheral collisions

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of J/ψJ/ψ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200~\rm GeV in d++Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer −t-t is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going Zero-Degree Calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate saturation model and the gluon shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

Search for invisible decays of the ΛΛ baryon

A search for invisible decays of the ΛΛ baryon is carried out in the process J/ψ→ΛΛˉJ/ψ\toΛ\barΛ based on (1.0087±0.0044)×1010(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector located at the BEPCII storage ring. No signals are found for the invisible decays of ΛΛ baryon, and the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be 7.4×10−57.4 \times 10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search for invisible decays of baryons; such searches will play an important role in constraining dark sector models related to the baryon asymmetry.

Search for massive long-lived particles decaying semileptonically at sqrt(s)=13 TeV

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLP) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

A search for the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\toϕμ^+μ^- is performed using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. No evidence for the B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\to ϕμ^+ μ^- decay is found and an upper limit on the branching fraction, excluding the ϕϕ and charmonium regions in the dimuon spectrum, of 4.4×10−34.4 \times 10^{-3} at a 90%\% credibility level, relative to that of the Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s \to ϕμ^+ μ^- decay, is established. Using the measured Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s\toϕμ^+μ^- branching fraction and assuming a phase-space model, the absolute branching fraction of the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\to ϕμ^+ μ^- in the full q2q^2 range is determined to be less than 3.2×10−93.2 \times 10^{-9} at a 90%\% credibility level.

Simultaneous determination of CKM angle γγ and charm mixing parameters

A combination of measurements sensitive to the CPCP violation angle γγ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle and to the charm mixing parameters that describe oscillations between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 mesons is performed. Results from the charm and beauty sectors, based on data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, are combined for the first time. This method provides an improvement on the precision of the charm mixing parameter yy by a factor of two with respect to the current world average. The charm mixing parameters are determined to be x=(0.400 −0.053 +0.052)%x = (0.400^{\,+0.052}_{\,-0.053})\% and y=(0.630 −0.030 +0.033)%y = (0.630^{\,+0.033}_{\,-0.030})\%. Study of ZZ bosons produced in association with charm in the forward region

Events containing a ZZ boson and a charm jet are studied for the first time in the forward region of proton-proton collisions. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−16 \, {\rm fb}^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. In events with a ZZ boson and a jet, the fraction of charm jets is determined in intervals of ZZ-boson rapidity in the range 2.0<y(Z)<4.52.0 < y(Z) < 4.5. A sizable enhancement is observed in the forward-most y(Z)y(Z) interval, which could be indicative of a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark Tcc+T_{cc}^+

An exotic narrow state in the D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mass spectrum just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold is studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} acquired with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar Tcc+T^+_{cc} tetraquark with a quark content of ccuˉdˉcc\bar{u}\bar{d} and spin-parity quantum numbers JP=1+\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+. Study of the DDDD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D∗+D^{*+} mesons is confirmed by the D0π+D^0π^+ mass distribution. The mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D∗DD^{*}D system are analysed. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the Tcc+T^+_{cc} state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

Two-particle correlations on transverse rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200 GeV at STAR

Two-particle correlation measurements projected onto two-dimensional, transverse rapidity coordinates (yT1,yT2y_{T1},y_{T2}), allow access to dynamical properties of the QCD medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions that angular correlation measurements are not sensitive to. We report non-identified charged-particle correlations for Au + Au minimum-bias collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Correlations are presented as 2D functions of transverse rapidity for like-sign, unlike-sign and all charged-particle pairs, as well as for particle pairs whose relative azimuthal angles lie on the near-side, the away-side, or at all relative azimuth. The correlations are constructed using charged particles with transverse momentum pT≥0.15p_T \geq 0.15 GeV/cc, pseudorapidity from −-1 to 1, and azimuthal angles from −π-π to ππ. The significant correlation structures that are observed evolve smoothly with collision centrality. The major correlation features include a saddle shape plus a broad peak with maximum near yT≈3y_T \approx 3, corresponding to pT≈p_T \approx 1.5 GeV/cc. The broad peak is observed in both like- and unlike-sign charge combinations and in near- and away-side relative azimuthal angles. The all-charge, all-azimuth correlation measurements are compared with the theoretical predictions of {\sc hijing} and {\sc epos}. The results indicate that the correlations for peripheral to mid-central collisions can be approximately described as a superposition of nucleon + nucleon collisions with minimal effects from the QCD medium. Strong medium effects are indicated in mid- to most-central collisions.

First observation of the decay Bs0→K−μ+νμB_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ and a measurement of ∣Vub∣/∣Vcb∣|V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}|

The first observation of the suppressed semileptonic Bs0→K−μ+νμB_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ decay is reported. Using a data sample recorded in {\it pp} collisions in 2012 with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, the branching fraction \mbox{B(Bs0→K−μ+νμ)\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ)} is measured to be (1.06±0.05 (stat)±0.08 (syst))×10−4(1.06\pm0.05~(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.08~(\mathrm{syst}))\times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one represents the combined systematic uncertainties. The decay Bs0→Ds−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^-μ^+ν_μ, where Ds−D_s^- is reconstructed in the final state K+K−π−K^+K^-π^-, is used as a normalization channel to minimize the experimental systematic uncertainty. Measurement of CP violation in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}

A measurement of direct CP violation in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\textrm{fb}^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV. The CP asymmetry is measured to be 0.025±0.015±0.006±0.0030.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to an external input, respectively. Measurement of differential bbˉb\bar{b}- and ccˉc\bar{c}-dijet cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 ~ \mathrm{TeV}

The inclusive bbˉb \bar{b}- and ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1^{-1}. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two bb or cc quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/c/c, pseudorapidity in the range 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 53.0±9.753.0 \pm 9.7 nb, and the total ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 73±1673 \pm 16 nb. The ratio between ccˉc \bar{c}- and bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be 1.37±0.271.37 \pm 0.27. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

Measurement of Groomed Jet Substructure Observables in \pp Collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with STAR

In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction (zgz_{\rm{g}}) and the groomed jet radius (RgR_{\rm{g}}), as defined in the SoftDrop algorihm, are reported in \pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from R=0.2−0.6R = 0.2 - 0.6 in the transverse momentum range 15<pT,jet<6015 < p_{\rm{T, jet}} < 60 GeV/c/c. These studies show that, in the pT,jetp_{\rm{T, jet}} range accessible at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the zgz_{\rm{g}} distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the pT,jetp_{\rm{T, jet}}, the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both zgz_{\rm{g}} and RgR_{\rm{g}}, resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for \pp collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high pT,jetp_{\rm{T, jet}}, but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports the first measurement of inclusive jet production in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT_{T} algorithm using charged tracks with pseudorapidity ∣η∣<1.0|η|<1.0 and transverse momentum 0.2<pT,jetch<300.2<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<30 GeV/cc, with jet resolution parameter RR=0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The large background yield uncorrelated with the jet signal is observed to be dominated by statistical phase space, consistent with a previous coincidence measurement. This background is suppressed by requiring a high-transverse-momentum (high-pTp_T) leading hadron in accepted jet candidates. The bias imposed by this requirement is assessed, and the pTp_T region in which the bias is small is identified. Inclusive charged-particle jet distributions are reported in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions for 5<pT,jetch<255<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<25 GeV/cc and 5<pT,jetch<305<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<30 GeV/cc, respectively. The charged-particle jet inclusive yield is suppressed for central Au+Au collisions, compared to both the peripheral Au+Au yield from this measurement and to the pppp yield calculated using the PYTHIA event generator. The magnitude of the suppression is consistent with that of inclusive hadron production at high pTp_T, and that of semi-inclusive recoil jet yield when expressed in terms of energy loss due to medium-induced energy transport. Comparison of inclusive charged-particle jet yields for different values of RR exhibits no significant evidence for medium-induced broadening of the transverse jet profile for R<0.4R<0.4 in central Au+Au collisions. The measured distributions are consistent with theoretical model calculations that incorporate jet quenching.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ in B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm \to D π^\pm decays with D→KS0h+h−D \to K_\mathrm S^0 h^+ h^-

A measurement of CPCP-violating observables is performed using the decays B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm\to D π^\pm, where the DD meson is reconstructed in one of the self-conjugate three-body final states KSπ+π−K_{\mathrm S}π^+π^- and KSK+K−K_{\mathrm S}K^+K^- (commonly denoted KSh+h−K_{\mathrm S} h^+h^-). The decays are analysed in bins of the DD-decay phase space, leading to a measurement that is independent of the modelling of the DD-decay amplitude. The observables are interpreted in terms of the CKM angle γγ. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\text{fb}^{-1} collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 77, 88, and 13 TeV13\,\text{TeV} with the LHCb experiment, γγ is measured to be (68.7−5.1+5.2)∘\left(68.7^{+5.2}_{-5.1}\right)^\circ. The hadronic parameters rBDKr_B^{DK}, rBDπr_B^{Dπ}, δBDKδ_B^{DK}, and δBDπδ_B^{Dπ}, which are the ratios and strong-phase differences of the suppressed and favoured B±B^\pm decays, are also reported.

Observation of a new Ξb0Ξ_b^0 state

Using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb−1^{-1}, the observation of a new excited Ξb0Ξ_b^0 resonance decaying to the Ξb−π+Ξ_b^-π^+ final state is presented. The state, referred to as Ξb(6227)0Ξ_b(6227)^0, has a measured mass and natural width of m(Ξb(6227)0)=6227.1 −1.5 +1.4±0.5m(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 6227.1^{\,+1.4}_{\,-1.5}\pm0.5 MeV, Γ(Ξb(6227)0)=18.6 −4.1 +5.0±1.4Γ(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 18.6^{\,+5.0}_{\,-4.1}\pm1.4 MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The production rate of the Ξb(6227)0Ξ_b(6227)^0 state relative to that of the Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon in the kinematic region 2<η<52<η<5 and pT<30p_{\rm T}<30 GeV is measured to be fΞb(6227)0fΞb−B(Ξb(6227)0→Ξb−π+)=0.045±0.008±0.004\frac{f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0}}{f_{Ξ_b^-}}{\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) = 0.045\pm0.008\pm0.004, where B(Ξb(6227)0→Ξb−π+){\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) is the branching fraction of the decay, and fΞb(6227)0f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0} and fΞb−f_{Ξ_b^-} represent fragmentation fractions. Improved measurements of the mass and natural width of the previously observed Ξb(6227)−Ξ_b(6227)^- state, along with the mass of the Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon, are also reported. Both measurements are significantly more precise than, and consistent with, previously reported values.

Observation of the Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- decay

The Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- decay is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV\rm{TeV} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13{\rm{fb}^{-1}}. The ratio of branching fractions between the Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- and the Λb0→Λc+Ds−\varLambda^{0}_{b}\to\varLambda^{+}_{c}D^{-}_{s} decays is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B} ( \varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^-) } {\mathcal{B} ( \varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c D^-_s)} = (9.26 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.26)\times10^{-2}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the knowledge of the Ds−→K+K−π−D^-_s \to K^+ K^- π^- branching fraction. No structure on the invariant mass distribution of the Λc+K+\varLambda^+_c K^+ system is found, consistent with no open-charm pentaquark signature.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} in the Ξc+π−π+\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} final state

A search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} is performed in the Ξc+π−π+\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} invariant-mass spectrum, where the Ξc+\itΞ_{c}^{+} baryon is reconstructed in the pK−π+p K^{-} π^{+} final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4−-3.8 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the Ξcc++→(Ξc+→pK−π+)π+\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+} decay for different Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25 GeV/c\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the Ξcc+→Λc+K−π+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+} decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620 MeV/c2\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5−-3.7 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2 mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Study of Bs0→J/ψπ+π−K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-K^+K^- decays

The decays Bs0→J/ψπ+π−K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- K^+ K^- are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV. The decays Bs0→J/ψK∗0Kˉ∗0B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψK^{\ast0} \bar{K}^{\ast0} and Bs0→χc1(3872)K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^-, where the K+K−K^+K^- pair does not originate from a ϕϕ meson, are observed for the first time. A structure, denoted as X(4740)X(4740), is observed in the J/ψϕJ/ψϕ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{X(4740)} & = & 4741 \pm 6 \pm 6\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2 \,, \\ Γ_{X(4740)} & = & 53 \pm 15 \pm 11\,{\mathrm{MeV}} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Study of the Bc+B_c^+ decays into charmonia and three light hadrons

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−19fb^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the Bc+B_c^+ meson into a J/ψJ/ψ or ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays Bc+→(ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−)π+B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ , Bc+→ψ(2S)π+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-, Bc+→J/ψK+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^- and Bc+→K+K+K−B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^- are observed for the first time, and evidence for the Bc+→ψ(2S)K+K−π+B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+ decay is found, where J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different Bc+B_c^+ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.

Transient Higgs oscillations and high-order nonlinear light-Higgs coupling in terahertz-wave drivenNbN superconductor

We study the nonlinear optical response in a superconducting NbN thin film with strong terahertz (THz)wave. Besides the expected third harmonic generation, we observe a new transient oscillation which softensin frequency with temperature increasing towards superconducting transition temperatureTc. We identify thisnew mode as the Higgs transient oscillation. To verify this proposal, we introduce a time-frequency resolvedtechnique, named spectrogram for visualizing THz spectrum. The dynamic decaying behavior of the mode isobserved, which is consistent with theoretical expectation about intrinsic Higgs oscillation. Moreover, a higherorder nonlinear optics effect,i.e.fifth harmonic generation, has been observed for the first time, which we assignto the higher order coupling between Higgs mode and electromagn

Beam energy dependence of net-ΛΛ fluctuations measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC

The measurements of particle multiplicity distributions have generated considerable interest in understanding the fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers in the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization regime, in particular near a possible critical point and near the chemical freeze-out. We report the measurement of efficiency and centrality bin width corrected cumulant ratios (C2/C1C_{2}/C_{1}, C3/C2C_{3}/C_{2}) of net-ΛΛ distributions, in the context of both strangeness and baryon number conservation, as a function of collision energy, centrality and rapidity. The results are for Au + Au collisions at five beam energies (sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV) recorded with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). We compare our results to the Poisson and negative binomial (NBD) expectations, as well as to Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model predictions. Both NBD and Poisson baselines agree with data within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The ratios of the measured cumulants show no features of critical fluctuations. The chemical freeze-out temperatures extracted from a recent HRG calculation, which was successfully used to describe the net-proton, net-kaon and net-charge data, indicate ΛΛ freeze-out conditions similar to those of kaons. However, large deviations are found when comparing to temperatures obtained from net-proton fluctuations. The net-ΛΛ cumulants show a weak, but finite, dependence on the rapidity coverage in the acceptance of the detector, which can be attributed to quantum number conservation.

First measurement of ΛcΛ_c baryon production in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV

We report on the first measurement of the charmed baryon Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} production at midrapidity (∣y∣|y| << 1) in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ΛcΛ_c/D0D^0 (denoting (Λc++Λc−Λ_c^++Λ_c^-)/(D0+D0ˉD^0+\bar{D^0})) yield ratio is measured to be 1.08 ±\pm 0.16 (stat.) ±\pm 0.26 (sys.) in the 0--20% most central Au+Au collisions for the transverse momentum (pTp_T) range 3 << pTp_T << 6 GeV/cc. This is significantly larger than the PYTHIA model calculations for p+pp+p collisions. The measured ΛcΛ_c/D0D^0 ratio, as a function of pTp_T and collision centrality, is comparable to the baryon-to-meson ratios for light and strange hadrons in Au+Au collisions. Model calculations including coalescence hadronization for charmed baryon and meson formation reproduce the features of our measured ΛcΛ_c/D0D^0 ratio.

Measurement of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables in the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The full set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables are determined in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. Contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration is taken into account. The tension seen between the previous LHCb results and the Standard Model predictions persists with the new data. The precise value of the significance of this tension depends on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

Measurement of D0^0-meson + hadron two-dimensional angular correlations in Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV

Open heavy flavor hadrons provide unique probes of the medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Due to their increased mass relative to light-flavor hadrons, long lifetime, and early production in hard-scattering interactions, they provide access to the full evolution of the partonic medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. This paper reports two-dimensional (2D) angular correlations between neutral DD-mesons and unidentified charged particles produced in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV. D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 mesons are reconstructed via their weak decay to K∓π±K^{\mp} π^{\pm} using the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) in the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) experiment. Correlations on relative pseudorapidity and azimuth (Δη,Δϕ)(Δη,Δϕ) are presented for peripheral, mid-central and central collisions with D0D^0 transverse momentum from 2 to 10 GeV/cc. Attention is focused on the 2D peaked correlation structure near the triggered D0D^0-meson, the {\em near-side} (NS) peak, which serves as a proxy for a charm-quark containing jet. The correlated NS yield of charged particles per D0D^0-meson and the 2D widths of the NS peak increase significantly from peripheral to central collisions. These results are compared with similar correlations using unidentified charged particles, consisting primarily of light-flavor hadrons, at similar trigger particle momenta. Similar per-trigger yields and widths of the NS correlation peak are observed. The present results provide additional evidence that D0D^0-mesons undergo significant interactions with the medium formed in heavy-ion collision and show, for the first time, significant centrality evolution of the NS 2D peak in the correlations of particles associated with a heavy-flavor hadron produced in these collisions.

Measurement of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the Λb0Λ^0_b polarisation in pppp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of Λb0Λ^0_b baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of Λb0Λ^0_b transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1<pT<201 < p_{T} < 20 GeV/c/c and 2<η<52 < η< 5, respectively. The data are consistent with Λb0Λ^0_b baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ→pπ−Λ\rightarrow pπ^- decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

Measurement of the central exclusive production of charged particle pairs in proton-proton collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC

We report on the measurement of the Central Exclusive Production of charged particle pairs h+h−h^{+}h^{-} (h=π,K,ph = π, K, p) with the STAR detector at RHIC in proton-proton collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The charged particle pairs produced in the reaction pp→p′+h+h−+p′pp\to p^\prime+h^{+}h^{-}+p^\prime are reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector, while the forward-scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system. Differential cross sections are measured in the fiducial region, which roughly corresponds to the square of the four-momentum transfers at the proton vertices in the range $0.04~\mbox{GeV}^2 < -t_1 , -t_2 < 0.2~\mbox{GeV}^2$, invariant masses of the charged particle pairs up to a few GeV and pseudorapidities of the centrally-produced hadrons in the range ∣η∣<0.7|η|<0.7. The measured cross sections are compared to phenomenological predictions based on the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) model. Structures observed in the mass spectra of π+π−π^{+}π^{-} and K+K−K^{+}K^{-} pairs are consistent with the DPE model, while angular distributions of pions suggest a dominant spin-0 contribution to π+π−π^{+}π^{-} production. The fiducial π+π−π^+π^- cross section is extrapolated to the Lorentz-invariant region, which allows decomposition of the invariant mass spectrum into continuum and resonant contributions. The extrapolated cross section is well described by the continuum production and at least three resonances, the f0(980)f_0(980), f2(1270)f_2(1270) and f0(1500)f_0(1500), with a possible small contribution from the f0(1370)f_0(1370). Fits to the extrapolated differential cross section as a function of t1t_1 and t2t_2 enable extraction of the exponential slope parameters in several bins of the invariant mass of π+π−π^+π^- pairs. These parameters are sensitive to the size of the interaction region.

Measurements of WW and Z/γ∗Z/γ^* cross sections and their ratios in p+pp+p collisions at RHIC

We report on the WW and Z/γ∗Z/γ^* differential and total cross sections as well as the W+W^+/W−W^- and (W++W−)(W^+ + W^-)/(Z/γ∗)(Z/γ^*) cross-section ratios measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC in p+pp+p collisions at s=500\sqrt{s} = 500 GeV and 510510 GeV. The cross sections and their ratios are sensitive to quark and antiquark parton distribution functions. In particular, at leading order, the WW cross-section ratio is sensitive to the dˉ/uˉ\bar{d}/\bar{u} ratio. These measurements were taken at high Q2∼MW2,MZ2Q^2 \sim M_W^2,M_Z^2 and can serve as input into global analyses to provide constraints on the sea quark distributions. The results presented here combine three STAR data sets from 2011, 2012, and 2013, accumulating an integrated luminosity of 350 pb−1^{-1}. We also assess the expected impact that our W+/W−W^+/W^- cross-section ratios will have on various quark distributions, and find sensitivity to the uˉ−dˉ\bar{u}-\bar{d} and dˉ/uˉ\bar{d}/\bar{u} distributions.

Optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe study on Bi2_2Rh3_3Se2_2: evidence for charge-density-wave order formation

The parkerite-type ternary chalcogenide Bi2_2Rh3_3Se2_2 was discovered to be a charge density wave (CDW) superconductor. However, there was a debate on whether the observed phase transition at 240 K could be attributed to the formation of CDW order. To address the issue, we performed optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurements on single crystal samples of Bi2_2Rh3_3Se2_2. Our optical conductivity measurement reveals clearly the formation of an energy gap with associated spectral change only at low energies, yielding strong evidence for a CDW phase transition at 240 K. Time resolved pump-probe measurement provides further support for the CDW phase transition. The amplitude and relaxation time of quasiparticles extracted from the photoinduced reflectivity show strong enhancement near transition temperature, yielding further evidence for the CDW energy gap formation. Additionally, a collective mode is identified from the oscillations in the pump-probe time delay at low temperature. This mode, whose frequency decreases gradually at elevated temperature, could be naturally attributed to the amplitude mode of CDW state.

Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB.

Photo-induced nonequilibrium response in underdoped YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} probed by time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy

Intense laser pulses have recently emerged as a tool to tune between different orders in complex quantum materials. Among different light-induced phenomena, transient superconductivity far above the equilibrium transition temperature in cuprates is particularly attractive. Key to those experiments was the resonant pumping of specific phonon modes, which was believed to induce superconducting phase coherence by suppressing the competing orders or modifying the structure slightly. Here, we present a comprehensive study of photo-induced nonequilibrium response in underdoped YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x}. We find that upon photo-excitations, Josephson plasma edge in superconducting state is initially removed accompanied by quasiparticle excitations, and subsequently reappears at frequency lower than the static plasma edge within short time. In normal state, an enhancement or weaker edge-like shape is indeed induced by pump pulses in the reflectance spectrum accompanied by simultaneous rises in both real and imaginary parts of conductivity. We compare the pump-induced effects between near- and mid-infrared excitations and exclude phonon pumping as a scenario for the photo-induced effects above. We further elaborate the transient responses in normal state are unlikely to be explained by photo-induced superconductivity.

Revealing ultra-strong magnon-photon coupling in a polar antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8 by time domain terahertz spectroscopy

Strong coupling between magnon and electromagnetic wave can lead to the formation of a coupled spinphoton quasiparticle named as magnon-polariton. The phenomenon is well studied for ferromagnetic systems inside microwave cavities in recent years. However, formation of magnon-polariton is rarely seen for an antiferromagnet (AFM) because the strong coupling condition is not easily fulfilled. Here we present time-domain terahertz measurement on a multiferroic polar antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8. We find clearly beating between two modes at frequencies above and below the electric-active magnon frequency below TN, which we assign to the formation of AFM magnon-polariton. An ultra-strong spin-photon coupling effect is derived based on the energy level splitting. However, the AFM magnon-polariton is absent in the frequency domain measurement. Our work reveals that the coherent magnon formation driven by the ultrashort THz pulse provides a new way to detect polariton mode splitting.

Search for the rare decays Bs0→e+e−B^0_s\to e^+e^- and B0→e+e−B^0\to e^+e^-

A search for the decays Bs0→e+e−B^0_s\to e^+e^- and B0→e+e−B^0\to e^+e^- is performed using data collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 77, 88 and 13 TeV13\,\text{TeV}, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 11, 22 and 2 fb−12\,\text{fb}^{-1}, respectively. No signal is observed. Assuming no contribution from B0→e+e−B^0\to e^+e^- decays, an upper limit of B(Bs0→e+e−)<9.4 (11.2)×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\to e^+e^-)<9.4\,(11.2)\times10^{-9} is obtained at 90 (95) %90\,(95)\,\% confidence level. If no Bs0→e+e−B^0_s\to e^+e^- contribution is assumed, a limit of B(B0→e+e−)<2.5 (3.0)×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0\to e^+e^-)<2.5\,(3.0)\times10^{-9} is determined at 90 (95) %90\,(95)\,\% confidence level. These upper limits are more than one order of magnitude lower than the previous values.

Beam-energy dependence of identified two-particle angular correlations in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

The two-particle angular correlation functions, R2R_2, of pions, kaons, and protons in Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV were measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. These correlations were measured for both like-sign and unlike-sign charge combinations and versus the centrality. The correlations of pions and kaons show the expected near-side ({\it i.e.}, at small relative angles) peak resulting from short-range mechanisms. The amplitudes of these short-range correlations decrease with increasing beam energy. However, the proton correlation functions exhibit strong anticorrelations in the near-side region. This behavior is observed for the first time in an A+A collision system. The observed anticorrelation is pTp_{T}-independent and decreases with increasing beam energy and centrality. The experimental results are also compared to the Monte Carlo models UrQMD, Hijing, and AMPT.

Bulk Properties of the System Formed in Au+Au Collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 14.5 GeV

We report systematic measurements of bulk properties of the system created in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 14.5 GeV recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).The transverse momentum spectra of π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm} and p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) are studied at mid-rapidity (∣y∣<0.1|y| < 0.1) for nine centrality intervals. The centrality, transverse momentum (pTp_T),and pseudorapidity (ηη) dependence of inclusive charged particle elliptic flow (v2v_2), and rapidity-odd charged particles directed flow (v1v_{1}) results near mid-rapidity are also presented. These measurements are compared with the published results from Au+Au collisions at other energies, and from Pb+Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.76 TeV. The results at sNN\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 14.5 GeV show similar behavior as established at other energies and fit well in the energy dependence trend. These results are important as the 14.5 GeV energy fills the gap in μBμ_B, which is of the order of 100 MeV,between sNN\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =11.5 and 19.6 GeV. Comparisons of the data with UrQMD and AMPT models show poor agreement in general.

Capability of detecting low energy events in JUNO Central Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is an experimental project designed to determine the neutrino mass ordering and probe the fundamental properties of the neutrino oscillations. The JUNO central detector is a spherical liquid scintillator detector with a diameter of 35.4 m and equipped with approximately 18,000 20-inch PMTs. A trigger threshold of 0.5 MeV can be easily achieved by using a common multiplicity trigger and can meet the requirements for measuring neutrino mass ordering. However, it is essential to further reduce the trigger threshold for detecting solar neutrinos and supernova neutrinos. A sophisticated trigger scheme is proposed to achieve a low energy threshold by reducing the level of low energy radioactivity and dark noise coincidence. With the new trigger scheme, the events rate of the central detector from different types of sources have been carefully studied by using a detailed detector simulation. It shows that the trigger threshold can be reduced to 0.2 MeV, or even 0.1 MeV, if the concentration of 14^{14}C in liquid scintillator can be well controlled.

Underlying event measurements in pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}= 200 GeV at RHIC

Particle production sensitive to non-factorizable and non-perturbative processes that contribute to the underlying event associated with a high transverse momentum (pTp_{T}) jet in proton+proton collisions at s\sqrt{s}=200 GeV is studied with the STAR detector. Each event is divided into three regions based on the azimuthal angle with respect to the highest-pTp_{T} jet direction: in the leading jet direction ("Toward"), opposite to the leading jet ("Away"), and perpendicular to the leading jet ("Transverse"). In the Transverse region, the average charged particle density is found to be between 0.4 and 0.6 and the mean transverse momentum, ⟨pT⟩\langle p_{T}\rangle, between 0.5-0.7 GeV/cc for particles with pTp_{T}>>0.2 GeV/cc at mid-pseudorapidity (∣η∣|η|<<1) and jet pTp_{T}>>15 GeV/cc. Both average particle density and ⟨pT⟩\langle p_{T}\rangle depend weakly on the leading jet pTp_{T}. Closer inspection of the Transverse region hints that contributions to the underlying event from initial- and final-state radiation are significantly smaller in these collisions than at the higher energies, up to 13 TeV, recorded at the LHC. Underlying event measurements associated with a high-pTp_{T} jet will contribute to our understanding of QCD processes at hard and soft scales at RHIC energies, as well as provide constraints to modeling of underlying event dynamics.

Coherent diffractive photoproduction of ρ0ρ^{0} mesons on gold nuclei at RHIC

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of π+π−π^+π^- pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the π+π−π^+π^- invariant mass spectrum with a combination of ρρ and ωω resonances and a direct π+π−π^+π^- continuum. This is the first observation of the ωω in ultra-peripheral collisions, and the first measurement of ρ−ωρ-ω interference at energies where photoproduction is dominated by Pomeron exchange. The ωω amplitude is consistent with the measured γp→ωpγp\rightarrow ωp cross section, a classical Glauber calculation and the ω→π+π−ω\rightarrowπ^+π^- branching ratio. The ωω phase angle is similar to that observed at much lower energies, showing that the ρ−ωρ-ω phase difference does not depend significantly on photon energy. The ρ0ρ^0 differential cross section dσ/dtdσ/dt exhibits a clear diffraction pattern, compatible with scattering from a gold nucleus, with 2 minima visible. The positions of the diffractive minima agree better with the predictions of a quantum Glauber calculation that does not include nuclear shadowing than with a calculation that does include shadowing.

Beam Energy Dependence of the Third Harmonic of Azimuthal Correlations in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

We present results from a harmonic decomposition of two-particle azimuthal correlations measured with the STAR detector in Au+Au collisions for energies ranging from sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7 GeV to 200 GeV. The third harmonic v32{2}=⟨cos⁡3(ϕ1−ϕ2)⟩v_3^2\{2\}=\langle \cos3(ϕ_1-ϕ_2)\rangle, where ϕ1−ϕ2ϕ_1-ϕ_2 is the angular difference in azimuth, is studied as a function of the pseudorapidity difference between particle pairs Δη=η1−η2Δη= η_1-η_2. Non-zero {\vthree} is directly related to the previously observed large-ΔηΔη narrow-ΔϕΔϕ ridge correlations and has been shown in models to be sensitive to the existence of a low viscosity Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) phase. For sufficiently central collisions, v32{2}v_3^2\{2\} persist down to an energy of 7.7 GeV suggesting that QGP may be created even in these low energy collisions. In peripheral collisions at these low energies however, v32{2}v_3^2\{2\} is consistent with zero. When scaled by pseudorapidity density of charged particle multiplicity per participating nucleon pair, v32{2}v_3^2\{2\} for central collisions shows a minimum near {\snn}=20=20 GeV.

Ferromagnetic resonance study of composite Co/Ni - FeCoB free layers with perpendicular anisotropy

We study the properties of composite free layers with perpendicular anisotropy. The free layers are made of a soft FeCoB layer ferromagnetically coupled by a variable spacer (Ta, W, Mo) to a very anisotropic [Co/Ni] multilayer embodied in a magnetic tunnel junction meant for spin torque memory applications. For this we use broadband ferromagnetic resonance to follow the field dependence of the acoustical and optical excitation of the composite free layer in both in-plane and out-of-plane applied fields. The modeling provides the interlayer exchange coupling, the anisotropies and the damping factors. The popular Ta spacer are outperformed by W and even more by Mo, which combines the strongest interlayer exchange coupling without sacrificing anisotropies, damping factors and transport properties.

Measurement of elliptic flow of light nuclei at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 11.5, and 7.7 GeV at RHIC

We present measurements of 2nd^{nd} order azimuthal anisotropy (v2v_{2}) at mid-rapidity (∣y∣<1.0)(|y|<1.0) for light nuclei d, t, 3^{3}He (for sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 11.5, and 7.7 GeV) and anti-nuclei dˉ\bar{\rm d} (sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200, 62.4, 39, 27, and 19.6 GeV) and 3Heˉ^{3}\bar{\rm He} (sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV) in the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) experiment. The v2v_{2} for these light nuclei produced in heavy-ion collisions is compared with those for p and pˉ\bar{\rm p}. We observe mass ordering in nuclei v2(pT)v_{2}(p_{T}) at low transverse momenta (pT<2.0p_{T}<2.0 GeV/cc). We also find a centrality dependence of v2v_{2} for d and dˉ\bar{\rm d}. The magnitude of v2v_{2} for t and 3^{3}He agree within statistical errors. Light-nuclei v2v_{2} are compared with predictions from a blast wave model. Atomic mass number (AA) scaling of light-nuclei v2(pT)v_{2}(p_{T}) seems to hold for pT/A<1.5p_{T}/A < 1.5 GeV/cc. Results on light-nuclei v2v_{2} from a transport-plus-coalescence model are consistent with the experimental measurements.

Measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetry in p↑+p→W±/Z0p^\uparrow+p \to W^{\pm}/Z^0 at RHIC

We present the measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetry of weak boson production in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at s=500 GeV\sqrt{s} = 500~\text{GeV} by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured observable is sensitive to the Sivers function, one of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in proton-proton collisions from that observed in deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering. These data provide the first experimental investigation of the non-universality of the Sivers function, fundamental to our understanding of QCD.

Near-side azimuthal and pseudorapidity correlations using neutral strange baryons and mesons in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

We present measurements of the near-side of triggered di-hadron correlations using neutral strange baryons (ΛΛ, Λˉ\barΛ) and mesons (KS0K^0_S) at intermediate transverse momentum (3 << pTp_T << 6 GeV/cc) to look for possible flavor and baryon/meson dependence. This study is performed in dd+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The near-side di-hadron correlation contains two structures, a peak which is narrow in azimuth and pseudorapidity consistent with correlations due to jet fragmentation, and a correlation in azimuth which is broad in pseudorapidity. The particle composition of the jet-like correlation is determined using identified associated particles. The dependence of the conditional yield of the jet-like correlation on the trigger particle momentum, associated particle momentum, and centrality for correlations with unidentified trigger particles are presented. The neutral strange particle composition in jet-like correlations with unidentified charged particle triggers is not well described by PYTHIA. However, the yield of unidentified particles in jet-like correlations with neutral strange particle triggers is described reasonably well by the same model.

The transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) spectrum is measured for 0.1 ≤pT≤2.5\le p_{\rm T} \le 2.5 GeV/cc at mid-rapidity (∣y∣≤1|y|\le1). We obtain the pTp_{\rm T}-integrated ϕϕ(1020) mass Mϕ=1017.7±0.8(stat.)±0.9(sys.)M_ϕ=1017.7\pm0.8 (\rm {stat.}) \pm0.9 (\rm {sys.}) MeV/c2c^{2} and width Γϕ=8.0±2.5(stat.)±2.3(sys.)MeV/c2Γ_ϕ = 8.0\pm 2.5(\rm {stat.}) \pm 2.3(\rm {sys.}) \textrm{MeV/}c^{2}, which are within 1.5\,σσ and 1.1\,σσ of the vacuum values, respectively. No significant difference is observed in the measured pTp_{\rm T} spectrum, dN/dydN/dy, or <pT>\left<p_{\rm T}\right> of the ϕϕ(1020) meson between the e+e−e^{+}e^{-} and hadronic (K+K−K^{+}K^{-}) decay channels as measured by the same experiment. Upsilon production in U+U collisions at 193 GeV with the STAR experiment

We present a measurement of the inclusive production of Upsilon mesons in U+U collisions at 193 GeV at mid-rapidity (|y| < 1). Previous studies in central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV show a suppression of Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) production relative to expectations from the Upsilon yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll), with an indication that the Upsilon(1S) state is also suppressed. The present measurement extends the number of participant nucleons in the collision (Npart) by 20% compared to Au+Au collisions, and allows us to study a system with higher energy density. We observe a suppression in both the Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) and Upsilon(1S) yields in central U+U data, which consolidates and extends the previously observed suppression trend in Au+Au collisions.

JUNO Conceptual Design Report

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4σσ, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters sin⁡2θ12\sin^2θ_{12}, Δm212Δm^2_{21}, and ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^2_{ee}| to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. ∼\sim17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide ∼\sim75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.

Refrustration and competing orders in the prototypical Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice material

Spin ices, frustrated magnetic materials analogous to common water ice, are exemplars of high frustration in three dimensions. Recent experimental studies of the low-temperature properties of the paradigmatic Dy2_2Ti2_2O7_7 spin ice material, in particular whether the predicted transition to long-range order occurs, raise questions as per the currently accepted microscopic model of this system. In this work, we combine Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field theory calculations to analyze data from magnetization, elastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements on Dy2_2Ti2_2O7_7. We also reconsider the possible importance of the nuclear specific heat, CnucC_{\rm nuc}, in Dy2_2Ti2_2O7_7. We find that CnucC_{\rm nuc} is not entirely negligible below a temperature ∼0.5\sim 0.5 K and must be taken into account in a quantitative analysis of the calorimetric data of this compound below that temperature. We find that small effective exchange interactions compete with the magnetostatic dipolar interaction responsible for the main spin ice phenomenology. This causes an unexpected "refrustration" of the long-range order that would be expected from the incompletely self-screened dipolar interaction and which positions the material at the boundary between two competing classical long-range ordered ground states. This allows for the manifestation of new physical low-temperature phenomena in Dy2_2Ti2_2O7_7, as exposed by recent specific heat measurements. We show that among the four most likely causes for the observed upturn of the specific heat at low temperature -- an exchange-induced transition to long-range order, quantum non-Ising (transverse) terms in the effective spin Hamiltonian, the nuclear hyperfine contribution and random disorder -- only the last appears to be reasonably able to explain the calorimetric data.

Non-monotonic residual entropy in diluted spin ice: a comparison between Monte Carlo simulations of diluted dipolar spin ice models and experimental results

Spin ice materials, such as Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7, have been the subject of much interest for over the past fifteen years. Their low temperature strongly correlated state can be mapped onto the proton disordered state of common water ice and, consequently, spin ices display the same low temperature residual Pauling entropy as water ice. Interestingly, it was found in a previous study [X. Ke {\it et. al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 137203 (2007)] that, upon dilution of the magnetic rare-earth ions (Dy^{3+} and Ho^{3+}) by non-magnetic Yttrium (Y^{3+}) ions, the residual entropy depends {\it non-monotonically} on the concentration of Y^{3+} ions. In the present work, we report results from Monte Carlo simulations of site-diluted microscopic dipolar spin ice models (DSIM) that account quantitatively for the experimental specific heat measurements, and thus also for the residual entropy, as a function of dilution, for both Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7. The main features of the dilution physics displayed by the magnetic specific heat data are quantitatively captured by the diluted DSIM up to, and including, 85% of the magnetic ions diluted (x=1.7). The previously reported departures in the residual entropy between Dy2Ti2O7 versus Ho2Ti2O7, as well as with a site-dilution variant of Pauling's approximation, are thus rationalized through the site-diluted DSIM. For 90% (x=1.8) and 95% (x=1.9) of the magnetic ions diluted, we find a significant discrepancy between the experimental and Monte Carlo specific heat results. We discuss some possible reasons for this disagreement.

Is the Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore a quantum spin ice?

We use numerical linked cluster (NLC) expansions to compute the specific heat, C(T), and entropy, S(T), of a quantum spin ice model of Yb2Ti2O7 using anisotropic exchange interactions recently determined from inelastic neutron scattering measurements and find good agreement with experimental calorimetric data. In the perturbative weak quantum regime, this model has a ferrimagnetic ordered ground state, with two peaks in C(T): a Schottky anomaly signalling the paramagnetic to spin ice crossover followed at lower temperature by a sharp peak accompanying a first order phase transition to the ferrimagnetic state. We suggest that the two C(T) features observed in Yb2Ti2O7 are associated with the same physics. Spin excitations in this regime consist of weakly confined spinon-antispinon pairs. We suggest that conventional ground state with exotic quantum dynamics will prove a prevalent characteristic of many real quantum spin ice materials.

Thermodynamic properties of the Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore as a function of temperature and magnetic field: validation of a quantum spin ice exchange Hamiltonian

The thermodynamic properties of the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 material are calculated using the numericallinked-cluster (NLC) calculation method for an effective anisotropic-exchange spin-1/2 Hamiltonian with parameters recently determined by fitting the neutron scattering spin wave data obtained at high magnetic field h. Magnetization, M(T,h), as a function of temperature T and for different magnetic fields h applied along the three high symmetry directions [100], [110] and [111], are compared with experimental measurements on the material for temperature T>1.8K. The excellent agreement between experimentally measured and calculated M(T,h) over the entire temperature and magnetic field range considered provides strong quantitative validation of the effective Hamiltonian. It also confirms that fitting the high-field neutron spin wave spectra in the polarized paramagnetic state is an excellent method for determining the microscopic exchange constants of rare-earth insulating magnets that are described by an effective spin-1/2 Hamiltonian. Finally, we present results which demonstrate that a recent analysis of the polarized neutron scattering intensity of Yb2Ti2O7 using a random phase approximation (RPA) method [Chang et al., Nature Communications {3}, 992 (2012)] does not provide a good description of M(T,h) for T≲10T\lesssim 10 K, that is in the entire temperature regime where correlations become non-negligible.

Anomalous Self-Generated Electrostatic Fields in Nanosecond Laser-Plasma Interaction

Electrostatic (E) fields associated with the interaction of a well-controlled, high-power, nanosecond laser pulse with an underdense plasma are diagnosed by proton radiography. Using a current 3D wave propagation code equipped with nonlinear and nonlocal hydrodynamics, we can model the measured E-fields that are driven by the laser ponderomotive force in the region where the laser undergoes filamentation. However, strong fields of up to 110 MV/m measured in the first millimeter of propagation cannot be reproduced in the simulations. This could point to the presence of unexpected strong thermal electron pressure gradients possibly linked to ion acoustic turbulence, thus emphasizing the need for the development of full kinetic collisional simulations in order to properly model laser-plasma interaction in these strongly nonlinear conditions.

Fe XVII X-ray Line Ratios for Accurate Astrophysical Plasma Diagnostics

New laboratory measurements using an Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) and an x-ray microcalorimeter are presented for the n=3 to n=2 Fe XVII emission lines in the 15 Å to 17 Å range, along with new theoretical predictions for a variety of electron energy distributions. This work improves upon our earlier work on these lines by providing measurements at more electron impact energies (seven values from 846 to 1185 eV), performing an in situ determination of the x-ray window transmission, taking steps to minimize the ion impurity concentrations, correcting the electron energies for space charge shifts, and estimating the residual electron energy uncertainties. The results for the 3C/3D and 3s/3C line ratios are generally in agreement with the closest theory to within 10%, and in agreement with previous measurements from an independent group to within 20%. Better consistency between the two experimental groups is obtained at the lowest electron energies by using theory to interpolate, taking into account the significantly different electron energy distributions. Evidence for resonance collision effects in the spectra is discussed. Renormalized values for the absolute cross sections of the 3C and 3D lines are obtained by combining previously published results, and shown to be in agreement with the predictions of converged R-matrix theory. This work establishes consistency between results from independent laboratories and improves the reliability of these lines for astrophysical diagnostics. Factors that should be taken into account for accurate diagnostics are discussed, including electron energy distribution, polarization, absorption/scattering, and line blends.

Spin Ice: Magnetic Excitations without Monopole Signatures using Muon Spin Rotation

Theory predicts the low-temperature magnetic excitations in spin ices consist of deconfined magnetic charges, or monopoles. A recent transverse-field (TF) muon spin rotation (muSR) experiment [S T Bramwell et al, Nature 461, 956 (2009)] reports results claiming to be consistent with the temperature and magnetic field dependence anticipated for monopole nucleation - the so-called second Wien effect. We demonstrate via a new series of muSR experiments in Dy_2Ti_2O_7 that such an effect is not observable in a TF muSR experiment. Rather, as found in many highly frustrated magnetic materials, we observe spin fluctuations which become temperature independent at low temperatures, behavior which dominates over any possible signature of thermally nucleated monopole excitations.

Physical properties of the Sh2-104 HII region as seen by Herschel

Context: Sh2-104 is a Galactic H ii region with a bubble morphology, detected at optical and radio wavelengths. It is considered the first observational confirmation of the collect-and-collapse model of triggered star-formation. Aims: We aim to analyze the dust and gas properties of the Sh2-104 region to better constrain its effect on local future generations of stars. In addition, we investigate the relationship between the dust emissivity index β and the dust temperature, T_dust. Methods: Using Herschel PACS and SPIRE images at 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 μm we determine T_dust and β throughout Sh2-104, fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) obtained from aperture photometry. With the SPIRE Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) we obtained spectra at different positions in the Sh2-104 region. We detect J-ladders of CO and 13CO, with which we derive the gas temperature and column density. We also detect proxies of ionizing flux as the [NII] 3P1-3P0 and [CI] 3P2-3P1 transitions. Results: We find an average value of β ~ 1.5 throughout Sh2-104, as well as a T dust difference between the photodissociation region (PDR, ~ 25 K) and the interior (~ 40 K) of the bubble. We recover the anti-correlation between β and dust temperature reported numerous times in the literature. The relative isotopologue abundances of CO appear to be enhanced above the standard ISM values, but the obtained value is very preliminary and is still affected by large uncertainties.

Weak field magnetoresistance of narrow-gap semiconductor InSb

The weak antilocalization effect of InSb film in perpendicular as well as tilted magnetic field is investigated. It is found that the InSb film has quasi-two-dimensional feature and the Nyquist mechanism dominates decoherence. The two dimensionality is also verified further and the influence of roughness effect and Zeeman effect on weak antilocalization effect is studied by systematically investigating the anisotropy of weak field magnetoresistance with respect to magnetic field. It is also found that the existence of in-plane field can effectively suppress the weak antilocalization effect of InSb film and the roughness effect plays an important role in the anisotropy.

Interface Ferromagnetism in (110)-Oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 Ultrathin Superlattices

We explore manganite interface magnetism in epitaxially grown La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)/SrTiO3 ultrathin superlattices (SL) along (110) orientation. we show that robust ferromagnetism persists down to four monolayers LSMO(MLs) (~1.1 nm in thickness), of which 50% Mn is at the interface state. Above eight MLs, the magnetic moment is nearly saturated to the theoretical value of 3.7u_B, with an estimated interface moment of 3.2u_B. In comparison to (100)-oriented SLs which were previously shown to have a spin canted ground state, (110)-oriented SLs exhibit stronger low-dimensional ferromagnetism and better metallicity, suggesting a ferromagnetic interface spin state well suited for all-oxide spintronic devices. The underlining mechanism is qualitatively discussed.

The case for a directional dark matter detector and the status of current experimental efforts

We present the case for a dark matter detector with directional sensitivity. This document was developed at the 2009 CYGNUS workshop on directional dark matter detection, and contains contributions from theorists and experimental groups in the field. We describe the need for a dark matter detector with directional sensitivity; each directional dark matter experiment presents their project's status; and we close with a feasibility study for scaling up to a one ton directional detector, which would cost around $150M.
