Eigenvector-eigenvalue identities and an application to flavor physics

The eigenvector-eigenvalue identities are expanded to include general mixing parameters. Some simple relations are obtained and they reveal an intricate texture of connections between the eigenvalues and the mixing parameters. Permutation symmetry ($S_{3}\times S_{3}$) plays an indispensable role in our analysis. It is the guiding principle for the understanding of our results -- all of them are tensor equations under permutation.

Flavor Mixing and the Permutation Symmetry among Generations

In the standard model, the permutation symmetry among the three generations of fundamental fermions is usually regarded to be broken by the Higgs couplings. It is found that the symmetry is restored if we include the mass matrix parameters as physical variables which transform appropriately under the symmetry operation. Known relations between these variables, such as the renormalization group equations, as well as formulas for neutrino oscillations (in vacuum and in matter), are shown to be covariant tensor equations under the permutation symmetry group.

Rephasing invariance and permutation symmetry in flavor physics

With some modifications, the arguments for rephasing invariance can be used to establish permutation symmetry for the standard model. The laws of evolution of physical variables, which transform as tensors under permutation, are found to obey the symmetry, explicitly. We also propose to use a set of four mixing parameters, with unique properties, which may serve to characterize flavor mixing.

Properties of the Neutrino Mixing Matrix

For neutrino mixing we propose to use the parameter set $X_{i}$ $(=|V_{ei}|^{2})$ and $Ω_{i}$ $(=ε_{ijk}|V_{μj}|^{2}|V_{τk}|^{2})$, with two constraints. These parameters are directly measurable since the neutrino oscillation probabilities are quadratic functions of them. Physically, the set $Ω_{i}$ signifies a quantitative measure of $μ-τ$ asymmetry. Available neutrino data indicate that all the $Ω_{i}$'s are small $(\lesssim O(10^{-1}))$, but with large uncertainties. The behavior of $Ω_{i}$ as functions of the induced neutrino mass in matter are found to be simple, which should facilitate the analyses of long baseline experiments.

Neutrino mixing in matter

Three-neutrino mixing in matter is studied through a set of evolution equations which are based on a rephasing invariant parametrization. Making use of the known properties of measured neutrino parameters, analytic, approximate, solutions are obtained. Their accuracy is confirmed by comparison with numerical integration of these equations. The results, when expressed in the elements squared of the mixing matrix, exhibit striking patterns as the matter density varies.

Rephasing invariance and neutrino mixing

A rephasing invariant parametrization is introduced for three flavor neutrino mixing. For neutrino propagation in matter, these parameters are shown to obey evolution equations as functions of the induced neutrino mass. These equations are found to preserve (approximately) some characteristic features of the mixing matrix, resulting in solutions which exhibit striking patterns as the induced mass varies. The approximate solutions are compared to numerical integrations and found to be quite accurate.

Mass Matrices and Their Renormalization

We obtain explicitly the renormalization group equations for the quark mass matrices in terms of a set of rephasing invariant parameters. For a range of assumed high energy values for the mass ratios and mixing parameters, they are found to evolve rapidly and develop hierarchies as the energy scale decreases. To achieve the experimentally observed high degree of hierarchy, however, the introduction of new models with specific properties becomes necessary.

Neutrino mixing in the seesaw model

In the seesaw model with hierarchical Dirac masses, the neutrino mixing angle exhibits the behavior of a narrow resonance. In general, the angle is strongly suppressed, but it can be maximal for special parameter values. We delineate the small regions in which this happens, for the two flavor problem. On the other hand, the physical neutrino masses are hierarchical, in general, except in a large part of the region in which the mixing angle is sizable, where they are nearly degenerate. Our general analysis is also applicable to the RGE of neutrino mass matrix, where we find analytic solutions for the running of physical parameters, in addition to a complex RGE invariant relating them. It is also shown that, if one mixing angle is small, the three neutrino problem reduces to two, two flavor problems.

Classification and Application of Triangular Quark Mass Matrices

The hierarchical structure in the quark masses and mixings allows its ten physical parameters to be most conveniently encoded in mass matrices of the upper triangular form. We classify these matrices in the hierarchical, minimal parameter basis where the mismatch between the weak and mass eigenstates involves only small mixing angles. Ten such pairs are obtained for the up and down quarks. This analysis can be used to classify texture zeros of general mass matrices. For hermitian mass matrices with five texture zeros, this method yields immediately five pairs of textures with simple, analytic predictions for the quark mixings. Comparison with data indicates that, of the five pairs, three are disfavored, one is marginally acceptable, while the fifth fits well.

Constraints on Exotic Mixing of Three Neutrinos

Exotic explanations are considered for atmospheric neutrino observations. Our analysis includes matter effects and the mixing of all three neutrinos under the simplifying assumption of only one relevant mixing scale. Constraints from accelerator, reactor and solar neutrinos are included. We find that the proposed mixing mechanisms based on violations of Lorentz invariance or on violations of the equivalence principle cannot explain the recent observations of atmospheric neutrino mixing. However the data still allow a wide range of energy dependences for the vacuum mixing scale, and also allow large electron-neutrino mixing of atmospheric neutrinos. Next generation long baseline experiments will constrain these possibilities.

Solar Neutrinos and the Violation of Equivalence Principle

In this Brief Report, a non-standard solution to the solar neutrino problem is revisited. This solution assumes that neutrino flavors could have different couplings to gravity, hence, the equivalence principle is violated in this mechanism. The gravity induced mixing has the potential of accounting for the current solar neutrino data from several experiments even for massless neutrinos. We fit this solution to the total rate of neutrino events in the SuperKamiokande detector together with the total rate from other detectors and also with the most recent results of the SuperKamiokande results for the recoil-electron spectrum.

A Supersymmetric $Sp_{L} \times U_{Y}(1)$ Model

A supersymmetric $Sp_{L}(6) \times U_{Y}(1)$ model (SUSY $Sp(6)$) is proposed as an extension of the standard electroweak model. The model is applied in a phenomenological study of $B^{0}_{d} \bar{B}^{0}_{d}$ mixing. It is found that the supersymmetric (SUSY) partner $\tilde{z}^{\prime}$ of the extra $Z^{\prime}$ can significantly cancel the other contributions to bring the mixing parameter $x_{d}$ within the experimentally allowed range $0.57 \stackrel{<}{\sim} x_{d} \stackrel{<}{\sim} 0.77$ for a top mass of $158 \stackrel{<}{\sim} m_{t} \stackrel{<}{\sim} 194$ Gev. Other interesting and possibly novel features of flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) in SUSY theories with horizontal gauge symmetries are pointed out.

Inclusion of Z->b b-bar vertex corrections in Precision Electroweak Tests on the Sp(6)_L X U(1)_Y Model

We extend our previous work on the precision electroweak tests in the Sp(6)_L X U(1)_Y family model to include for the first time the important Z->b b-bar vertex corrections encoded in a new variable epsilon_b, utilizing all the latest LEP data. We include in our analysis the one loop EW radiative corrections due to the new bosons in terms of epsilon_1, epsilon_b and $ΔΓ_Z$. We find that the correlation between epsilon_1 and epsilon_b makes the combined constraint much stronger than the individual ones. The model is consistent with the recent CDF result of $m_t=174\pm 10^{+13}_{-12}\GeV$, but it can not accomodate $m_t\gsim 195\GeV$.
