Breakdown of Linear Spin-wave Theory and Existence of Spinon Bound States in the Frustrated Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet

Spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ was studied using high-resolution, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The flat mode, a characteristic of the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet, and the low-energy dispersive mode, which is dominated by magnons, can be well described by the linear spin-wave theory. However, the theory fails to describe three weakly dispersive modes between 9 and 14 meV. These modes could be attributed to two-spinon bound states, which decay into free spinons away from the zone center and at a high temperature, giving rise to continuum scattering.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the quasi-2D antiferromagnet Zn-doped copper pyrovanadate

Magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn$_{0.15}$Cu$_{1.85}$V$_2$O$_7$ (ZnCVO) have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that ZnCVO with Zn = 0.15 is isostructural with $β$-Cu$_{2}$V$_2$O$_7$ ($β$-CVO) with small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic properties measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu$^{2+}$ spins were found to align along the crystallographic $c$-axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction $J_1$. Spin dynamics reveals a typical symmetric spin-wave dispersion with strong interactions in the $bc$-plane and weak interplane coupling. The exchange interaction analysis indicates that the spin network of ZnCVO is topologically consistent with the previous DFT prediction but the values of leading exchange interactions are contradictory. Furthermore, rather than the predicted 2D honeycomb structure, the spin network in ZnCVO could be better described by the anisotropic 2D spin network composing of $J_1$, $J_5$, and $J_6$ interactions, four bonds per one spin site, coupled by weak interplane interactions.

Magnetic structure and high-field magnetization of the distorted kagome lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$

High-resolution time-of-flight powder neutron diffraction and high-field magnetization were measured to investigate the magnetic structure and existence of a field-induced magnetic phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_\textrm{t}=185$ K from the rhombohedral space group $R\bar{3}m$ with the perfect kagome spin network to the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with the distorted kagome planes. The distortion results in three inequivalent exchange interactions among the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins that magnetically order below $T_\textrm{N}=20.2$ K. Magnetization measured with a magnetic field applied within the kagome plane reveals small in-plane ferromagnetism resulting from spin canting. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetization does not show a clear hysteresis loop of the ferromagnetic component nor a prominent anomaly up to 170 T, with the exception of the subtle knee-like bend around 90 T, which could indicate the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The combined analysis using the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups and magnetic structure refinement on the neutron powder diffraction data suggests that the magnetic moments order in the magnetic space group $P2_1'/n'$ with the all-in-all-out spin structure, which by symmetry allows for the in-plane canting, consistent with the in-plane ferromagnetism observed in the magnetization.

Ferroelectric atomic displacement in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$

We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. The atomic displacements in the polar crystal structures are also analyzed in terms of the ferroelectric modes. In the ferroelectric phase, the atomic displacements are decomposed into dominant positive Slater, negative Last, and small positive Axe modes. The suppression of Slater and Last modes, the sign change of Last mode, and the enlargement of Axe mode are found in the multiferroic phase. The ferroelectric distortion is well reproduced by a first-principles calculation based on Berry phase method, providing an additional information on competing mechanisms to induce the polarization, electronic $p$-$d$ hybridization vs. magnetic exchange-striction.

Mössbauer studies of spin- and charge-modulations in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

The BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 compounds with x = 0 (parent), x = 0.10 (under-doped), x = 0.31, 0.33, 0.53 (superconductors with Tc = 27.3 K, 27.6 K, 13.9 K, respectively) and x = 0.70, 0.77 (over-doped) have been investigated versus temperature using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Special attention was paid to regions of the spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order, spin-nematic phase, and superconducting transition. The BaFe2(As0.90P0.10)2 compound exhibits a reduced amplitude of SDW as compared to the parent compound and preserved universality class of two-dimensional magnetic planes with one-dimensional spins. The spin-nematic phase region for x = 0.10 is characterized by an incoherent magnetic order. BaFe2(As0.69P0.31)2 shows coexistence of a weak magnetic order and superconductivity due to the vicinity of the quantum critical point. The charge density modulations in the BaFe2(As0.67P0.33)2 and BaFe2(As0.47P0.53)2 superconductors are perturbed near Tc. Pronounced hump of the average quadrupole splitting across superconducting transition is observed for the system with x = 0.33. The phosphorus substitution increases the Debye temperature of the BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 compound. Moreover, experimental electron charge densities at Fe nuclei in this material conclusively show that it should be recognized as a hole-doped system. The measured Mössbauer spectral shift and spectral area are not affected by transition to the superconducting state. This indicates that neither the average electron density at Fe nuclei nor the dynamical properties of the Fe-sublattice in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 are sensitive to the superconducting transition. Theoretical calculations of hyperfine parameters determining the patterns of Mössbauer spectra of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 with x = 0, 0.31, 0.5, and 1.0 are performed within the framework of the density functional theory.

Long-range order and spin-liquid states of polycrystalline Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$

Low-temperature states of polycrystalline samples of a frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ have been investigated by specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron scattering experiments. We have found that this system can be tuned by a minute change of $x$ from a spin-liquid state ($x < x_{\text{c}}$) to a partly ordered state with a small antiferromagnetic ordering of the order of $0.1 μ_{\text{B}}$. Specific heat shows a sharp peak at a phase transition at $T_{\text{c}}= 0.5$ K for $x=0.005$. Magnetic excitation spectra for this sample change from a quasielastic to a gapped type through $T_{\text{c}}$. The possibility of a Jahn-Teller transition is discussed.

Magnetic structure and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the $S = 1/2$ helical-honeycomb antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Magnetic properties of the $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$ have been studied using magnetization, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, and neutron diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility shows a broad peak at $\sim50$~K followed by an abrupt increase indicative of a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state at $T_{N}$ = 33.4(1) K. Above $T_N$, a fit to the Curie-Weiss law gives a Curie-Weiss temperature of $Θ=-73(1)$~K suggesting the dominant antiferromagnetic coupling. The result of the QMC calculations on the helical-honeycomb spin network with two antiferromagnetic exchange interactions $J_1$ and $J_2$ provides a better fit to the susceptibility than the previously proposed spin-chain model. Two sets of the coupling parameters $J_1:J_2=1:0.45$ with $J_1=5.79(1)$~meV and $0.65:1$ with $J_2=6.31(1)$~meV yield equally good fits down to $\sim T_N$. Below $T_{N}$, weak ferromagnetism due to spin canting is observed. The canting is caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with an estimated $bc$-plane component $\left|D_p\right|$ $\simeq0.14J_1$. Neutron diffraction reveals that the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins antiferromagnetically align in the $Fd'd'2$ magnetic space group. The ordered moment of 0.93(9)~$μ_B$ is predominantly along the crystallographic $a$-axis.

Anisotropic inplane spin correlation in the parent and Co-doped BaFe2As2: a neutron scattering study

Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were investigated in the normal states of the parent ($x = 0$), under-doped ($x = 0.04$) and optimally-doped ($x = 0.06$) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals using inelastic neutron scattering technique. For all the doping levels, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations were observed as a broad peak localized at ${\it Q} = (1/2, 1/2, l)$. At lower energies, the peak shows an apparent anisotropy in the $hk0$ plane; longitudinal peak widths are considerably smaller than transverse widths. The anisotropy is larger for the higher doping level. These results are consistent with the random phase approximation (RPA) calculations taking account of the orbital character of the electronic bands, confirming that the anisotropic nature of the spin fluctuations in the normal states is mostly dominated by the nesting of Fermi surfaces. On the other hand, the quasi-two-dimensional spin correlations grow much rapidly for decreasing temperature in the $x = 0$ parent compound, compared to that expected for nearly antiferromagnetic metals. This may be another sign of the unconventional nature of the antiferromagnetic transition in BaFe$_2$As$_2$.

Ghost modes and continuum scattering in the dimerized distorted kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$

High intensity pulsed neutron scattering reveals a new set of magnetic excitations in the pinwheel valence bond solid state of the distorted kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. The polarization of the dominant dispersive modes (2 meV $<\hbarω< $7 meV) is determined and found consistent with a dimer series expansion with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions ($D/J=0.18$). A weakly dispersive mode near 5 meV and shifted "ghosts" of the main modes are attributed to the enlarged unit cell below a $T=215$ K structural transition. Continuum scattering between 8 meV and 10 meV might be interpreted as a remnant of the kagome spinon continuum [T.-H. Han et al., Nature 492, 406 (2012)]

Determination of spin Hamiltonian in the Ni$_4$ magnetic molecule

Magnetic excitations in a Ni$_4$ magnetic molecule were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering and bulk susceptibility ($χ_\text{bulk}$) techniques. The magnetic excitation spectrum obtained from the inelastic neutron scattering experiments exhibits three modes at energy transfers of $\hbarω=0.5$, 1.35, and 1.6 meV. We show that the energy, momentum, and temperature dependences of the inelastic neutron scattering data and $χ_\text{bulk}$ can be well reproduced by an effective spin Hamiltonian consisted of intra-molecule exchange interactions, a single-ionic anisotropy, biquadratic interactions, and Zeeman term. Under a hydrostatic pressure, the bulk magnetization decreases with increasing pressure, which along with the biquadratic term indicates spin-lattice coupling present in this system.

Doping-Dependent and Orbital-Dependent Band Renormalization in Ba(Fe_1-xCo_x)_2As_2 Superconductors

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0.06, 0.14, and 0.24) shows that the width of the Fe 3d yz/zx hole band depends on the doping level. In contrast, the Fe 3d x^2-y^2 and 3z^2-r^2 bands are rigid and shifted by the Co doping. The Fe 3d yz/zx hole band is flattened at the optimal doping level x = 0.06, indicating that the band renormalization of the Fe 3d yz/zx band correlates with the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature. The orbital-dependent and doping-dependent band renormalization indicates that the fluctuations responsible for the superconductivity is deeply related to the Fe 3d orbital degeneracy.

Neutron Scattering Study on Commensurate and Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Phases in UPd2Si2 under Uniaxial Stress

The nature of competition between incommensurate (IC) and commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic (AF) orders in UPd2Si2 was investigated by performing elastic neutron scattering experiments under uniaxial stress sigma. It is found that applying sigma along tetragonal [010] direction reduces the IC-AF order, and then stabilizes the C-AF order. The transition temperature from IC- to C-AF phases T_Nl is enhanced from 109 K (sigma=0) to 112.5 K (0.8 GPa), while the onset of IC-AF transition T_Nh is unchanged from 132 K under sigma. In addition, c-axis component q_z of the IC-AF modulation at 115 K also increases from 0.736 (sigma=0) to 0.747 (0.8 GPa). The magnitude of C-AF moment at 5 K is estimated to be 2.2 mu_B/U in the entire sigma range presently investigated (sigma <= 0.8 GPa). These features are similar to those obtained from the investigations using hydrostatic pressure p, indicating that applications of p and sigma||[010] commonly induce the crystal strains which inherently affect a delicate balance of frustrated magnetic interactions between uranium 5f moments.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and spin re-orientation transition in the frustrated kagome lattice antiferromagnet

Magnetization, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements were performed to study a magnetic transition in jarosite, a spin-5/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the kagome plane, magnetizations in the ordered state show a sudden increase at a critical field H_c, indicative of the transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic states. This sudden increase arises as the spins on alternate kagome planes rotate 180 degrees to ferromagnetically align the canted moments along the field direction. The canted moment on a single kagome plane is a result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. For H < H_c, the weak ferromagnetic interlayer coupling forces the spins to align in such an arrangement that the canted components on any two adjacent layers are equal and opposite, yielding a zero net magnetic moment. For H > H_c, the Zeeman energy overcomes the interlayer coupling causing the spins on the alternate layers to rotate, aligning the canted moments along the field direction. Neutron scattering measurements provide the first direct evidence of this 180-degree spin rotation at the transition.

Coupling of spin and orbital excitations in the iron-based superconductor FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5)

We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to explaining this behavior. If correct, it follows that these nematic fluctuations are involved in the resonance and could be relevant to the pairing mechanism.

Doping Dependence of Spin Dynamics in Electron-Doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

The spin dynamics in single crystal, electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 has been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering over the full range from undoped to the overdoped regime. We observe damped magnetic fluctuations in the normal state of the optimally doped compound (x=0.06) that share a remarkable similarity with those in the paramagnetic state of the parent compound (x=0). In the overdoped superconducting compound (x=0.14), magnetic excitations show a gap-like behavior, possibly related to a topological change in the hole Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition), while the imaginary part of the spin susceptibility prominently resembles that of the overdoped cuprates. For the heavily overdoped, non-superconducting compound (x=0.24) the magnetic scattering disappears, which could be attributed to the absence of a hole Fermi-surface pocket observed by photoemission.

Investigation of the spin-glass regime between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$

Using bulk magnetization along with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we have investigated the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ and the nature of magnetic correlations in three nonsuperconducting samples of Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$, Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.15}$Te$_{0.85}$ and Fe$_{1.02}$Se$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$. A cusp and hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization for the $x=0.15$ and 0.3 samples indicates spin-glass (SG) ordering below $T_{\rm sg} = 23$K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the spin-glass behavior is associated with short-range spin density wave (SDW) ordering characterized by a static component and a low-energy dynamic component with a characteristic incommensurate wave vector of ${\bf Q}_m = (0.46, 0, 0.50)$ and an anisotropy gap of $\sim$ 2.5 meV. Our high ${\bf Q}$-resolution data also show that the systems undergo a glassy structural distortion that coincides with the short-range SDW order.

Pinwheel VBS state and triplet excitations in the two-dimensional deformed kagome lattice

Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattices in two dimensions (2D) being comprised of corner-sharing triangles -- such quantum-fluctuation-induced states have not been observed experimentally. Here we report the first realization of the "pinwheel" VBS ground state in the S=1/2 deformed kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb2Cu3SnF12. In this system, a lattice distortion breaks the translational symmetry of the ideal kagome lattice and stabilizes the VBS state.

First-order transition in the itinerant ferromagnet CoS$_{1.9}$Se$_{0.1}$

Undoped CoS$_2$ is an isotropic itinerant ferromagnet with a continuous or nearly continuous phase transition at $T_{\rm C} = 122$ K. In the doped CoS$_{1.9}$Se$_{0.1}$ system, the Curie temperature is lowered to $T_{\rm C} = 90$ K, and the transition becomes clearly first order in nature. In particular we find a discontinuous evolution of the spin dynamics as well as strong time relaxation in the ferromagnetic Bragg intensity and small angle neutron scattering in vicinity of the ferromagnetic transition. In the ordered state the long-wavelength spin excitations were found to be conventional ferromagnetic spin-waves with negligible spin-wave gap ($ < 0.04$ meV), indicating that this system is also an excellent isotropic (soft) ferromagnet. In a wide temperature range up to $0.9T_{\rm C}$, the spin-wave stiffness $D(T)$ follows the prediction of the two-magnon interaction theory, $D(T) = D(0)(1 - AT^{5/2})$, with $D(0) = 131.7 \pm 2.8$ meV-Å$^{2}$. The stiffness, however, does not collapse as $T \to T_{\rm C}$ from below. Instead a quasielastic central peak abruptly develops in the excitation spectrum, quite similar to results found in the colossal magnetoresistance oxides such as (La-Ca)MnO$_3$.
