Gradient flow and Bogomolny bounds for quantum metric actions

We formulate gradient flow dynamics generated by two natural actions of the quantum metric for an isolated set of Bloch bands. Specializing to two spatial dimensions, we derive Bogomolny-type lower bounds that relate these actions to the Chern number and show that the bounds are saturated by (anti-)holomorphic projector configurations. Along the flows, the actions decrease monotonically while the Chern number is conserved, giving a constructive route to simplify models within a fixed topological phase toward canonical, low-complexity representatives.

Edge states of a diffusion equation in one dimension: Rapid heat conduction to the heat bath

We propose a one-dimensional (1D) diffusion equation (heat equation) for systems in which the diffusion constant (thermal diffusivity) varies alternately with a spatial period $a$. We solve the time evolution of the field (temperature) profile from a given initial distribution, by diagonalising the Hamiltonian, i.e., the Laplacian with alternating diffusion constants, and expanding the temperature profile by its eigenstates. We show that there are basically phases with or without edge states. The edge states affect the heat conduction around heat baths. In particular, rapid heat transfer to heat baths would be observed in a short time regime, which is estimated to be $t<10^{-2}$s for $a\sim 10^{-3}$m system and $t< 1$s for $a\sim 10^{-2}$m system composed of two kinds of familiar metals such as titanium, zirconium and aluminium, gold, etc. We also discuss the effective lattice model which simplifies the calculation of edge states up to high energy. It is suggested that these high energy edge states also contribute to very rapid heat conduction in a very short time regime.

Moiré Landau levels of a $C_4$-symmetric twisted bilayer system in the absence of a magnetic field

It is widely known that the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) shows flat bands at magic angles, which can be well described by the effective continuum model derived by Bistritzer and MacDonald (BM). We propose in this paper a similar twisted bilayer system but defined on the square lattice with $π$-flux per plaquette, and study its spectrum using the BM Hamiltonian with a mass term which is originated from the staggered potential. The basic difference between the TBG and the present model is simply rotational symmetry, $C_3$ vs $C_4$, as well as a mass term. Nevertheless, the feature of the flat bands is quite different: Those of the TBG appear at magic angles only, while the present model shows many flat bands, which are reminiscent of Landau levels, quite stably at any angles even in the absence of a magnetic field other than $π$-flux which keeps time reversal (TR) symmetry. Moreover, flat bands emerge in the mass gap of the Dirac spectrum, and each state composing these flat bands is well-localized at the position forming the moiré lattice. It turns out that the moiré potential serves as a periodic magnetic field, which can give energies smaller that the gap around moiré lattice positions. We derive a local Hamiltonian valid around the moiré lattice sites and show that it indeed reproduces the energies of the flat bands within the mass gap. Since these mid-gap states are localized at the moiré lattice, they form degenerate levels, which may be referred to as moiré Landau levels, although the mechanism of degeneracies are different from the conventional Landau levels. Interestingly, doubled fermions of the BH Hamiltonian associated with two layers have opposite charges when they couple with the effective moiré magnetic filed, which concern TR symmetry.

Femtoscopic study of coupled-channel $NΞ$ and $ΛΛ$ interactions

The momentum correlation functions of S = -2 baryon pairs (p Xi^- and Lambda Lambda) produced in high-energy pp and pA collisions are investigated on the basis of the coupled-channel formalism. The strong interaction is described by the coupled-channel HAL QCD potential obtained by the lattice QCD simulations near physical quark masses, while the hadronic source function is taken to be a static Gaussian form. The coupled-channel effect, the threshold difference, the realistic strong interaction, and the Coulomb interaction are fully taken into account for the first time in the femtoscopic analysis of baryon-baryon correlations. The characteristic features of the experimental data for the p Xi^- and Lambda Lambda pairs at LHC are reproduced quantitatively with a suitable choice of non-femtoscopic parameters and the source size. The agreement between theory and experiment indicates that the N Xi (Lambda Lambda) interaction is moderately (weakly) attractive without having a quasi-bound (bound) state.

Chiral three-nucleon force and continuum for dripline nuclei and beyond

Three-nucleon force and continuum play important roles in reproducing the properties of atomic nuclei around driplines. Therefore it is valuable to build up a theoretical framework where both effects can be taken into account to solve the nuclear Schrödinger equation. To this end, in this letter, we have expressed the chiral three-nucleon force within the continuum Berggren representation, so that bound, resonant and continuum states can be treated on an equal footing in the complex-momentum space. To reduce the model dimension and computational cost, the three-nucleon force is truncated at the normal-ordered two-body level and limited in the $sd$-shell model space, with the residual three-body term being neglected. We choose neutron-rich oxygen isotopes as the test ground because they have been well studied experimentally, with the neutron dripline determined. The calculations have been carried out within the Gamow shell model. The quality of our results in reproducing the properties of oxygen isotopes around the neutron dripline shows the relevance of the interplay between three-nucleon force and the coupling to continuum states. We also analyze the role played by the chiral three-nucleon force, by dissecting the contributions of the $2π$ exchange, $1π$ exchange and contact terms.

A spin pump characterized by entanglement Chern numbers

We study a spin pump on a two-leg ladder chain of the Rice--Mele model. To characterize the spin pump, we propose the Chern number for the many-body ground state of the entanglement Hamiltonian, which is referred to as the entanglement Chern number. We show that this model has two phases distinguished by the entanglement Chern numbers. These two phases can be experimentally verified in cold atoms.

Bulk-edge correspondence in topological pumping

The topological pumping [1-3] is revisited from a view point of the bulk-edge correspondence. Shift of the center of mass (CM) as a pumped charge is explicitly given by the Berry connection in time direction. We show that observed pumping is due to the bulk, but its quantization is guaranteed by singular motion of the CM caused by edge states. This is the bulk-edge correspondence in the topological pumping. A gauge invariant form of the pumped charge is proposed by the temporal gauge and is used to establish this bulk-edge correspondence.

Streda formula for the Hofstadter-Wilson-Dirac model in two and four dimensions

We rederive the spectral asymmetry of the Wilson-Dirac model in external fields, paying attention to the Chern number due to the Berry connection. We interpret the smooth part of the spectral asymmetry as the Streda formula that is originally derived for the two-dimensional quantum Hall effect (QHE). We show by numerical calculations that the Streda formula reproduces the known first and second Chern numbers in a weak magnetic field limit. We conjecture that the Streda formula is valid even for stronger fields and for more generic systems in higher dimensions.

Disentangled topological numbers by a purification of entangled mixed states for non-interacting fermion systems

We argue that the entanglement Chern number proposed recently is invariant under the adiabatic deformation of a gapped many-body groundstate into a {\it disentangled/purified} one, which implies a partition of the Chern number into subsystems (disentangled Chern number). We generalize the idea to another topological number, the Z$_2$ Berry phase for a system with particle-hole symmetry, and apply it to a groundstate in a weak topological phase where the Chern number vanishes but the groundstate nevertheless has edge states. This entanglement Berry phase is especially useful for characterizing random systems with nontrivial edge states.

Recent developments in the eikonal description of the breakup of exotic nuclei

The study of exotic nuclear structures, such as halo nuclei, is usually performed through nuclear reactions. An accurate reaction model coupled to a realistic description of the projectile is needed to correctly interpret experimental data. In this contribution, we briefly summarise the assumptions made within the modelling of reactions involving halo nuclei. We describe briefly the Continuum-Discretised Coupled Channel method (CDCC) and the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation (DEA) in particular and present a comparison between them for the breakup of 15C on Pb at 68AMeV. We show the problem faced by the models based on the eikonal approximation at low energy and detail a correction that enables their extension down to lower beam energies. A new reaction observable is also presented. It consists of the ratio between angular distributions for two different processes, such as elastic scattering and breakup. This ratio is completely independent of the reaction mechanism and hence is more sensitive to the projectile structure than usual reaction observables, which makes it a very powerful tool to study exotic structures far from stability.

Entanglement Chern number for an extensive partition of a topological ground state

If an extensive partition in two dimensions yields a gapful entanglement spectrum of the reduced density matrix, the Berry curvature based on the corresponding entanglement eigenfunction defines the Chern number. We propose such an entanglement Chern number as a useful, natural, and calculable topological invariant, which is potentially relevant to various topological ground states. We show that it serves as an alternative topological invariant for time-reversal invariant systems and as a new topological invariant for a weak topological phase of a superlattice Wilson-Dirac model. In principle, the entanglement Chern number can also be effective for interacting systems such as topological insulators in contrast to $Z_2$ invariants.

Perfect selective alignment of nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have attracted significant interest because of their excellent spin and optical characteristics for quantum information and metrology. To take advantage of the characteristics, the precise control of the orientation of the N-V axis in the lattice is essential. Here we show that the orientation of more than 99 % of the NV centers can be aligned along the [111]-axis by CVD homoepitaxial growth on (111)-substrates. We also discuss about mechanisms of the alignment. Our result enables a fourfold improvement in magnetic-field sensitivity and opens new avenues to the optimum design of NV center devices.

Symmetry protected weak topological phases in a superlattice

We explore novel topological phases realized in a superlattice system based on the Wilson-Dirac model. Our main focus is on a two-dimensional analogue of weak topological insulator phases. We find such phases as those characterized by gapless edge states that are protected by symmetry but sensitive to the orientation of the edge relative to the superlattice structure. We show that manifest and hidden reflection symmetries protect such weak topological phases, and propose bulk Z2 indices responsible for the topological protection of the edge states.

Bulk-edge correspondence for Chern topological phases: A viewpoint from a generalized index theorem

We explore the bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators (superconductors) without time-reversal symmetry from the point of view of the index theorem for open spaces. We assume generic Hamiltonians not only with a linear dispersion but also with higher order derivatives arising from generic band structures. Using a generalized index theorem valid for such systems, we show the equivalence between the spectral flow of the edge states and the Chern numbers specifying the bulk systems.

Longitudinal and transverse exciton spin relaxation times in single InP/InAsP/InP nanowire quantum dots

We have investigated the optical properties of a single InAsP quantum dot embedded in a standing InP nanowire. A regular array of nanowires was fabricated by epitaxial growth and electron-beam patterning. The elongation of transverse exciton spin relaxation time of the exciton state with decreasing excitation power was observed by first-order photon correlation measurements. This behavior is well explained by the motional narrowing mechanism induced by Gaussian fluctuations of environmental charges in the InP nanowire. The longitudinal exciton spin relaxation time was evaluated by the degree of the random polarization of emission originating from exciton state confined in a single nanowire quantum dots by using Mueller Calculus based on Stokes parameters representation.

Majorana fermions and Z$_2$ vortices on a square lattice

We present a simple model of Majorana fermions on a square lattice, and study zero-energy states due to Z$_2$ vortices. We show the relationship between the Chern number of the ground state and the number of the zero-energy states by numerical calculations for finite systems. We also discuss the relationship for the bulk system by observing the change of the spectral asymmetry. We finally present an effective continuum model with O(2) gauge potential which shows a topological change of the index at a half-flux.

Majorana zero modes bound to a vortex line in a topological superconductor

We explore Majorana zero modes bound to a vortex line in a three dimensional topological superconductor model, focusing our attention on the validity of the index theorem previously derived. We first solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation at the zero energy to obtain the analytical index. We next calculate the topological index given by the order parameters. It turns out that they indeed coincide and that index theorem, which has been derived on the implicit assumption that a defect is point-like, is also valid for a line defect.

Z$_2$ index theorem for Majorana zero modes in a class D topological superconductor

We propose a Z$_2$ index theorem for a generic topological superconductor in class D. Introducing a particle-hole symmetry breaking term depending on a parameter and regarding it as a coordinate of an extra dimension, we define the index of the zero modes and corresponding topological invariant for such an extended Hamiltonian. It is shown that these are related with the number of the zero modes of the original Hamiltonian modulo two.

Quantization of non-Abelian Berry phase for time reversal invariant systems

We present a quantized non-Abelian Berry phase for time reversal invariant systems such as quantum spin Hall effect. Ordinary Berry phase is defined by an integral of Berry's gauge potential along a loop (an integral of the Chern-Simons one-form), whereas we propose that a similar integral but over five dimensional parameter space (an integral of the Chern-Simons five-form) is suitable to define a non-Abelian Berry phase. We study its global topological aspects and show that it is indeed quantized into two values. We also discuss its close relationship with the nonperturbative anomalies.

Quantum spin Hall effect in three dimensional materials: Lattice computation of Z$_2$ topological invariants and its application to Bi and Sb

We derive an efficient formula for Z$_2$ topological invariants characterizing the quantum spin Hall effect. It is defined in a lattice Brillouin zone, which enables us to implement numerical calculations for realistic models even in three dimensions. Based on this, we study the quantum spin Hall effect in Bi and Sb in quasi-two and three dimensions using a tight-binding model.

Topological analysis of the quantum Hall effect in graphene: Dirac-Fermi transition across van Hove singularities and the edge vs bulk quantum numbers

Inspired by a recent discovery of a peculiar integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene, we study QHE on a honeycomb lattice in terms of the topological quantum number, with two-fold interests: First, how the zero-mass Dirac QHE around the center of the tight-binding band crosses over to the ordinary finite-mass fermion QHE around the band edges. Second, how the bulk QHE is related with the edge QHE for the entire spectrum including Dirac and ordinary behaviors. We find the following: (i) The zero-mass Dirac QHE persists up to the van Hove singularities, at which the ordinary fermion behavior abruptly takes over. Here a technique developed in the lattice gauge theory enabled us to calculate the behavior of the topological number over the entire spectrum. This result indicates a robustness of the topological quantum number, and should be observable if the chemical potential can be varied over a wide range in graphene. (ii) To see if the honeycomb lattice is singular in producing the anomalous QHE, we have systematically surveyed over square-honeycomb-$π$-flux lattices, which is scanned by introducing a diagonal transfer $t'$. We find that the massless Dirac QHE forms a critical line, that is, the presence of Dirac cones in the Brillouin zone is preserved by the inclusion of $t'$ and the Dirac region sits side by side with ordinary one persists all through the transformation. (iii) We have compared the bulk QHE number obtained by an adiabatic continuity of the Chern number across transformation and numerically obtained edge QHE numbers calculated from the whole energy spectra for sample with edges, which shows that the bulk QHE number coincides, as in ordinary lattices, with the edge QHE number throughout the lattice transformation.

On the finite temperature Drude weight of the anisotropic Heisenberg chain

We present a study of the Drude weight $D(T)$ of the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ chain in the gapless regime. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) is applied in two different ways. In the first application we employ the particle basis of magnons and their bound states. In this case we rederive and considerably extend earlier work in the literature. However, in the course of our investigation we find arguments that cast doubt on the applicability of the TBA in this case. In a second application by use of the spinon and anti-spinon particle basis we obtain completely different results. Only for anisotropy parameter $Δ$ close to 0 we find that $D(T)$ is a monotonously decaying function of temperature. For $Δ$ close to 1 the behaviour is entirely different showing a finite temperature maximum. Also for the isotropic antiferromagnetic chain ($Δ=1$) the results for $D(T)$ are finite for T=0 as well as for $T>0$ with an infinite positive slope at T=0.
