Crystal-field states and defect levels in candidate quantum spin ice Ce$_{2}$Hf$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We report the synthesis of powder and single-crystal samples of the cerium pyrohafnate and their characterization using neutron diffraction, thermogravimetry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We evaluate the amount of non-magnetic Ce$^{4+}$ defects and use this result to interpret the spectrum of crystal-electric field transitions observed using inelastic neutron scattering. The analysis of these single-ion transitions indicates the dipole-octupole nature of the ground state doublet and a significant degree of spin-lattice coupling. The single-ion properties calculated from the crystal-electric field parameters obtained spectroscopically are in good agreement with bulk magnetic susceptibility data down to about 1 K. Below this temperature, the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a correlated regime without showing any sign of magnetic long-range order or freezing down to 0.08 K. We conclude that Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_{7}$ is another candidate to investigate exotic correlated states of quantum matter such as the octupolar quantum spin ice recently argued to exist in the isostructural compounds Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

Successive incommensurate spin orderings and excitations in multiferroic SrMnGe2O6

Anisotropic multiferroic properties of SrMnGe2O6 pyroxene single crystals were systematically investigated by means of magnetization, heat capacity, pyroelectric current measurement and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Single crystal neutron diffraction allows us to unambiguously reveal the presence of two incommensurate magnetic orderings: a non-polar amplitude-modulated collinear sinusoidal magnetic structure emerges at TN1=4.36(2)K followed by a polar elliptical cycloidal spin structure below TN2=4.05(2)K. Pyroelectric current measurements on single crystal confirm the appearance of a spontaneous polarization within the (ac) plane below TN2 associated with the latter magnetic symmetry through extended Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya mechanism. The magnetic phase diagram was calculated considering the three isotropic exchange couplings relevant in this system. The magnetic excitations spectra of SrMnGe2O6 measured by inelastic neutron scattering were successfully modeled using a set of exchange interactions consistent with this phase diagram.

A quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles on the pyrochlore lattice

Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles$^1$. Theories typically define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a simple rule governing the local ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores - a state described by a lattice gauge theory of quantum electrodynamics$^{2-4}$. However, f-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and 'hidden' orders$^{5-6}$. Here we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce$^{3+}$-based pyrochlore, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with the formation of a fluid-like state of matter, but the intensity distribution is weighted to larger scattering vectors, which indicates that the correlated degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that typical of magnetic dipoles in a spin liquid. The temperature evolution of the bulk properties in the correlated regime below 1 Kelvin is well reproduced using a model of dipole-octupole doublets on a pyrochlore lattice$^{7-8}$. The nature and strength of the octupole-octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a '2-plus-2-minus' rule. Our work identifies Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ as a unique example of a material where frustrated multipoles form a 'hidden' topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Helical bunching and symmetry lowering inducing multiferroicity in Fe langasites

The chiral Fe-based langasites represent model systems of triangle-based frustrated magnets with a strong potential for multiferroicity. We report neutron scattering measurements for the multichiral Ba3MFe3Si2O14 (M = Nb, Ta) langasites revealing new important features of the magnetic order of these systems: the bunching of the helical modulation along the c-axis and the in-plane distortion of the 120{\textdegree} Fe-spin arrangement. We discuss these subtle features in terms of the microscopic spin Hamiltonian, and provide the link to the magnetically-induced electric polarization observed in these systems. Thus, our findings put the multiferroicity of this attractive family of materials on solid ground.

Order by virtual crystal field fluctuations in pyrochlore XY antiferromagnets

Conclusive evidence of order by disorder is scarce in real materials. Perhaps one of the strongest cases presented has been for the pyrochlore XY antiferromagnet Er2Ti2O7, with the ground state selection proceeding by order by disorder induced through the effects of quantum fluctuations. This identification assumes the smallness of the effect of virtual crystal field fluctuations that could provide an alternative route to picking the ground state. Here we show that this order by virtual crystal field fluctuations is not only significant, but competitive with the effects of quantum fluctuations. Further, we argue that higher-multipolar interactions that are generically present in rare-earth magnets can dramatically enhance this effect. From a simplified bilinear-biquadratic model of these multipolar interactions, we show how the virtual crystal field fluctuations manifest in Er2Ti2O7 using a combination of strong coupling perturbation theory and the random phase approximation. We find that the experimentally observed psi2 state is indeed selected and the experimentally measured excitation gap can be reproduced when the bilinear and biquadratic couplings are comparable while maintaining agreement with the entire experimental spin-wave excitation spectrum. Finally, we comments on possible tests of this scenario and discuss implications for other order-by-disorder candidates in rare-earth magnets.

Dispersive magnetic resonance mode in the Kondo semiconductor CeFe2Al10

The CeT2Al10 family of orthorhombic compounds exhibits a very peculiar evolution from a Kondo-insulator (T: Fe) to an unconventional long-range magnetic order (T: Ru, Os). Inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed on single-crystal CeFe2Al10 reveal that this material develops a spin-gap in its magnetic spectral response below ~ 50 K, with a magnetic excitation dispersing from $E = 10.2 \pm 0.5$ meV at the Y zone-boundary point [q = (0,1,0)] to $\approx 12$ meV at the top of the branch. The excitation shows a pronounced polarization of the magnetic fluctuations along a, the easy anisotropy axis. Its behavior is contrasted with that of the (magnonlike) modes previously reported for CeRu2Al10, which have transverse character and exist only in the antiferromagnetic state. The present observation is ascribed to a "magnetic exciton" mechanism invoked to explain a similar magnetic response previously discovered in YbB12.

Magneto- to electro-active transmutation of spin waves in ErMnO3

The low energy dynamical properties of the multiferroic hexagonal perovskite ErMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering as well as terahertz and far infrared spectroscopies on synchrotron source. From these complementary techniques, we have determined the magnon and crystal field spectra and identified a zone center magnon only excitable by the electric field of an electromagnetic wave. Using comparison with the isostructural YMnO3 compound and crystal field calculations, we propose that this dynamical magnetoelectric process is due to the hybridization of a magnon with an electro-active crystal field transition.

Palmer-Chalker correlations in the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er2Sn2O7

\ersn\, is considered, together with \erti, as a realization of the XY antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice. We present magnetization measurements confirming that \ersn\, does not order down to 100 mK but exhibits a freezing below 200 mK. Our neutron scattering experiments evidence the strong XY character of the \er moment and point out the existence of short range correlations in which the magnetic moments are in peculiar configurations, the Palmer-Chalker states, predicted theoretically for an XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet with dipolar interactions. Our estimation of the \ersn\, parameters confirm the role of the latter interactions on top of relatively weak and isotropic exchange couplings.

Anisotropic propagative excitations and quadrupolar effects in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The dynamical magnetic correlations in \tbti\, have been investigated using polarized inelastic neutron scattering. Dispersive excitations are observed, emerging from pinch points in reciprocal space and characterized by an anisotropic spectral weight. Anomalies in the crystal field and phonon excitation spectrum at Brillouin zone centers are also reported. These findings suggest that Coulomb phases, although they present a disordered ground state with dipolar correlations, allow the propagation of collective excitations. They also point out a strong spin-lattice coupling, which likely drives effective interactions between the $4f$ quadrupolar moments.

Magnetisation process in Er2Ti2O7 and Tb2Ti2O7 at very low temperature

We present a model which accounts for the high field magnetisation at very low temperature in two pyrochlore frustrated systems, Er2Ti2O7 and Tb2Ti2O7. The two compounds present very different ground states: Er2Ti2O7, which has a planar crystal field anisotropy, is an antiferromagnet with T_N=1.2K, whereas Tb2Ti2O7 is expected to have Ising character and shows no magnetic ordering down to 0.05K, being thus labelled a ``spin liquid''. Our model is a mean field self-consistent calculation involving the 4 rare earth sites of a tetrahedron, the building unit of the pyrochlore lattice. It includes the full crystal field hamiltonian, the infinite range dipolar interaction and anisotropic nearest neighbour exchange described by a 3-component tensor. For Er2Ti2O7, we discuss the equivalence of our treatment of the exchange tensor, taken to be diagonal in a frame linked to a rare earth - rare earth bond, with the pseudo-spin hamiltonian recently developped for Kramers doublets in a pyrochlore lattice. In Tb2Ti2O7, an essential ingredient of our model is a symmetry breaking developping at very low temperature. We compare its prediction for the isothermal magnetisation with that of ``the quantum spin ice'' model.

Anisotropic spin-dynamics in the Kondo semiconductor CeRu2Al10

Spin dynamics in the new Kondo insulator compound CeRu2Al10 has been studied using unpolarized and polarized neutron scattering on single crystals. In the unconventional ordered phase forming below T0 = 27.3 K, two excitation branches are observed with significant intensities, the lower one of which has a gap of 4.8 +/- 0.3 meV and a pronounced dispersion up to about 8.5 meV. Comparison with RPA magnon calculations assuming crystal-field and anisotropic exchange couplings captures major aspects of the data, but leaves unexplained discrepancies, pointing to a key role of direction-specific hybridization between 4f and conduction band states in this compound.

Spin liquid correlations, anisotropic exchange and symmetry breaking in Tb2Ti2O7

We have studied the low energy spin dynamics between 4.6K and 0.07K in a Tb2Ti2O7 single crystal sample, by means of inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The spectra consist in a dual response, with a static and an inelastic contribution, showing striking Q-dependences. We propose an interpretation involving an anisotropic exchange interaction in combination with a breaking of the threefold symmetry at the rare earth site. Simulations of the Q-dependent scattering in the Random Phase Approximation account well for the inelastic response.

Magneto-elastic coupling and unconventional magnetic ordering in triangular multiferroic AgCrS2

The temperature evolution of the crystal and magnetic structures of ferroelectric sulfide AgCrS2 have been investigated by means of neutron scattering. AgCrS2 undergoes at TN = 41.6 K a first-order phase transition, from a paramagnetic rhombohedral R3m to an antiferromagnetic monoclinic structure with a polar Cm space group. In addition to being ferroelectric below TN, the low temperature phase of AgCrS2 exhibits an unconventional collinear magnetic structure that can be described as double ferromagnetic stripes coupled antiferromagnetically, with the magnetic moment of Cr+3 oriented along b within the anisotropic triangular plane. The magnetic couplings stabilizing this structure are discussed using inelastic neutron scattering results. Ferroelectricity below TN in AgCrS2 can possibly be explained in terms of atomic displacements at the magneto-elastic induced structural distortion. These results contrast with the behavior of the parent frustrated antiferromagnet and spin-driven ferroelectric AgCrO2.

Parity Broken Chiral Spin Dynamics in Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$

The spin wave excitations emerging from the chiral helically modulated 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic order in a langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ enantiopure crystal were investigated by unpolarized and polarized inelastic neutron scattering. A dynamical fingerprint of the chiral ground state is obtained, singularized by (i) spectral weight asymmetries answerable to the structural chirality and (ii) a full chirality of the spin correlations observed over the whole energy spectrum. The intrinsic chiral nature of the spin waves elementary excitations is shown in absence of macroscopic time reversal symmetry breaking.

Spin dynamics in the ordered spin ice Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

Geometrical frustration is a central challenge in contemporary condensed matter physics, a crucible favourable to the emergence of novel physics. The pyrochlore magnets, with rare earth magnetic moments localized at the vertices of corner-sharing tetrahedra, play a prominent role in this field, with a rich variety of exotic ground states ranging from the "spin ices" \hoti\ and \dyti\ to the "spin liquid" and "ordered spin ice" ground states in \tbti\ and \tbsn. Inelastic neutron scattering provides valuable information for understanding the nature of these ground states, shedding light on the crystal electric field (CEF) level scheme and on the interactions between magnetic moments. We have performed such measurements with unprecedented neutron flux and energy resolution, in the "ordered spin ice" \tbsn. We argue that a new interaction, which involves the spin lattice coupling through a low temperature distortion of the trigonal crystal field, is necessary to account for the data.
