LT-scaling in depleted quantum spin ladders

Using a combination of neutron scattering, calorimetry, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and analytic results we uncover confinement effects in depleted, partially magnetized quantum spin ladders. We show that introducing non-magnetic impurities into magnetized spin ladders leads to the emergence of a new characteristic length L in the otherwise scale-free Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (serving as the effective low-energy model). This results in universal LT scaling of staggered susceptibilities. Comparison of simulation results with experimental phase diagrams of prototypical spin ladder compounds DIMPY and BPCB yields excellent agreement.

Spin dynamics in the square-lattice cupola system Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$

We report high-resolution single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. This material is formed from layers of four-site \cupola" structures, oriented alternately upwards and downwards, which constitute a rather special realization of two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice magnetism. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction within each cupola, or plaquette, unit has a geometry largely unexplored among the numerous studies of magnetic properties in 2D Heisenberg models with spin and spatial anisotropies. We have measured the magnetic excitations at zero field and in fields up to 5 T, finding a complex mode structure with multiple characteristic features that allow us to extract all the relevant magnetic interactions by modelling within the linear spin-wave approximation. We demonstrate that Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is a checkerboard system with almost equal intra- and inter-plaquette couplings, in which the intra-plaquette DM interaction is instrumental both in enforcing robust magnetic order and in opening a large gap at the Brillouin-zone center. We place our observations in the perspective of generalized phase diagrams for spin-1/2 square-lattice models and materials, where exploring anisotropies and frustration as routes to quantum disorder remains a frontier research problem.

Magnetic properties of transition metal dimers probed by inelastic neutron scattering

The physical characterisation and understanding of molecular magnetic materials is one of the most important steps towards the integration of such systems in hybrid spintronic devices. Amongst the many characterisation techniques employed in such a task, Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) stands as one of the most powerful and sensitive tools to investigate their spin dynamics. Herein, the magnetic properties and spin dynamics of two dinuclear complexes, namely [(M(hfacac)$_2$)$_2$(bpym)] (where M = Ni$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$, abbreviated in the following as Ni$_2$, Co$_2$) are reported. These are model systems that could constitute fundamental units of future spintronic devices. By exploiting the highly sensitive IN5 Cold INS spectrometer, we are able to gain a deep insight into the spin dynamics of Ni$_2$ and to fully obtain the microscopic spin Hamiltonian parameters; while for Co$_2$, a multitude of INS transitions are observed demonstrating the complexity of the magnetic properties of octahedral cobalt-based systems.

Spin and quadrupole correlations by three-spin interaction in the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$

We have investigated the origin of the magnetic dipole correlations $\langle σ_{\boldsymbol{Q}}^z σ_{\boldsymbol{-Q}}^z \rangle$ characterized by the modulation wave vector $\boldsymbol{k} \sim (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$ observed in the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$. This magnetic short-range order cannot be accounted for by adding further-neighbor exchange interactions to the nearest-neighbor pseudospin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ Hamiltonian for quantum pyrochlore magnets. Using classical Monte Carlo simulation and quantum simulation based on thermally pure quantum (TPQ) states we have shown that the spin correlations with $\boldsymbol{k} \sim (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$ are induced at low temperatures by a three-spin interaction of a form $σ_{\boldsymbol{r}}^{\pm} σ_{\boldsymbol{r}^{\prime}}^z σ_{\boldsymbol{r}^{\prime \prime}}^z $, which is a correction to the Hamiltonian due to the low crystal-field excitation. Simulations using TPQ states have shown that the spin correlations coexist with electric quadrupole correlations $\langle σ_{\boldsymbol{Q}}^α σ_{\boldsymbol{-Q}}^β \rangle$ ($α, β= x, y$) with $\boldsymbol{k} \sim \boldsymbol{0}$. These results suggest that the putative quantum spin liquid state of Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ is located close to phase boundaries of the spin-ice, quadrupole-ordered, and magnetic-ordered states in the classical approximation, and that the three-spin interaction brings about a quantum disordered ground state with both spin and quadrupole correlations.

A quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles on the pyrochlore lattice

Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles$^1$. Theories typically define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a simple rule governing the local ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores - a state described by a lattice gauge theory of quantum electrodynamics$^{2-4}$. However, f-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and 'hidden' orders$^{5-6}$. Here we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce$^{3+}$-based pyrochlore, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with the formation of a fluid-like state of matter, but the intensity distribution is weighted to larger scattering vectors, which indicates that the correlated degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that typical of magnetic dipoles in a spin liquid. The temperature evolution of the bulk properties in the correlated regime below 1 Kelvin is well reproduced using a model of dipole-octupole doublets on a pyrochlore lattice$^{7-8}$. The nature and strength of the octupole-octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a '2-plus-2-minus' rule. Our work identifies Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ as a unique example of a material where frustrated multipoles form a 'hidden' topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Influence of Chloride Substitution on the Rotational Dynamics of Methylammonium in MAPbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$ Perovskites

The hybrid halide perovskites MAPbI$_{3}$, MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$, and MAPbCl$_{3}$ (MA - methylammonium) have been investigated using inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) with the aim of elucidating the impact of chloride substitution on the rotational dynamics of MA. In this context, we discuss the influence of the inelastic neutron scattering caused by low-energy phonons on the QENS resulting from the MA rotational dynamics in MAPbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$. Through a comparative temperature-dependent QENS investigation with different energy resolutions, which allow a wide Fourier time window, we achieved a consistent description of the influence of chlorine substitution in MAPbI$_{3}$ on to the MA dynamics. Our results show that chlorine substitution in the low temperature orthorhombic phase leads to a weakening of the hydrogen bridge bonds since the characteristic relaxation times of C$_{3}$ rotation at 70 K in MAPbCl$_{3}$ (135 ps) and MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$ (485 ps) are much shorter than in MAPbI$_{3}$ (1635 ps). For the orthorhombic phase, we obtained the activation energies from the temperature-dependent characteristic relaxation times $τ$C$_{3}$ by Arrhenius fits indicating lower values of E$_{a}$ for MAPbCl$_{3}$ and MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$ compared to MAPbI$_{3}$. We also performed QENS analyses at 190 K for all three samples. Here we observed that MAPbCl$_{3}$ shows slower MA rotational dynamics than MAPbI$_{3}$ in the disordered structure.

Helical bunching and symmetry lowering inducing multiferroicity in Fe langasites

The chiral Fe-based langasites represent model systems of triangle-based frustrated magnets with a strong potential for multiferroicity. We report neutron scattering measurements for the multichiral Ba3MFe3Si2O14 (M = Nb, Ta) langasites revealing new important features of the magnetic order of these systems: the bunching of the helical modulation along the c-axis and the in-plane distortion of the 120{\textdegree} Fe-spin arrangement. We discuss these subtle features in terms of the microscopic spin Hamiltonian, and provide the link to the magnetically-induced electric polarization observed in these systems. Thus, our findings put the multiferroicity of this attractive family of materials on solid ground.

Magneto- to electro-active transmutation of spin waves in ErMnO3

The low energy dynamical properties of the multiferroic hexagonal perovskite ErMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering as well as terahertz and far infrared spectroscopies on synchrotron source. From these complementary techniques, we have determined the magnon and crystal field spectra and identified a zone center magnon only excitable by the electric field of an electromagnetic wave. Using comparison with the isostructural YMnO3 compound and crystal field calculations, we propose that this dynamical magnetoelectric process is due to the hybridization of a magnon with an electro-active crystal field transition.

Anisotropic propagative excitations and quadrupolar effects in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The dynamical magnetic correlations in \tbti\, have been investigated using polarized inelastic neutron scattering. Dispersive excitations are observed, emerging from pinch points in reciprocal space and characterized by an anisotropic spectral weight. Anomalies in the crystal field and phonon excitation spectrum at Brillouin zone centers are also reported. These findings suggest that Coulomb phases, although they present a disordered ground state with dipolar correlations, allow the propagation of collective excitations. They also point out a strong spin-lattice coupling, which likely drives effective interactions between the $4f$ quadrupolar moments.

Excitations of amorphous solid helium

We present neutron scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor, $S(Q,ω)$, of amorphous solid helium confined in 47 $Å$ pore diameter MCM-41 at pressure 48.6 bar. At low temperature, $T$ = 0.05 K, we observe $S(Q,ω)$ of the confined quantum amorphous solid plus the bulk polycrystalline solid between the MCM-41 powder grains. No liquid-like phonon-roton modes, other sharply defined modes at low energy ($ω<$ 1.0 meV) or modes unique to a quantum amorphous solid that might suggest superflow are observed. Rather the $S(Q,ω)$ of confined amorphous and bulk polycrystalline solid appear to be very similar. At higher temperature ($T>$ 1 K), the amorphous solid in the MCM-41 pores melts to a liquid which has a broad $S(Q,ω)$ peaked near $ω\simeq$ 0 characteristic of normal liquid $^4$He under pressure. Expressions for the $S(Q,ω)$ of amorphous and polycrystalline solid helium are presented and compared. In previous measurements of liquid $^4$He confined in MCM-41 at lower pressure the intensity in the liquid roton mode decreases with increasing pressure until the roton vanishes at the solidification pressure (38 bars), consistent with no roton in the solid observed here.

Parity Broken Chiral Spin Dynamics in Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$

The spin wave excitations emerging from the chiral helically modulated 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic order in a langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ enantiopure crystal were investigated by unpolarized and polarized inelastic neutron scattering. A dynamical fingerprint of the chiral ground state is obtained, singularized by (i) spectral weight asymmetries answerable to the structural chirality and (ii) a full chirality of the spin correlations observed over the whole energy spectrum. The intrinsic chiral nature of the spin waves elementary excitations is shown in absence of macroscopic time reversal symmetry breaking.
