Geometry Driven Spin Polarization Effects in Waveguiding Plasmonic Crystal

We investigated the modulation in the polarization-dependent optical behaviour of the waveguiding plasmonic crystal by varying the illumination and detection geometry. We employed the finite element method-based COMSOL simulation and Jones-Mueller formalisms to probe the variations in optical parameters by systematically varying the angle of incidence and azimuthal angle of the incident plane wave source, thereby quantifying the variations in the polarization anisotropy parameters. The enhancement of optical properties at various resonances and the tunability of the hybridized modes are discussed. Importantly, our study reveals that despite the system being perfectly inversion-symmetric and achiral, it exhibits circular polarization anisotropy effects for non-zero finite azimuthal angles, manifested in the off-block-diagonal elements of the constructed Mueller matrices. The origin of this intriguing circular anisotropy effect is unravelled using the sequential linear birefringence and linear diattenuation effects arising from geometrical polarization transformation. Its implications in the spin-orbit interaction of light in the plasmonic crystal system are discussed.

Characterizing coherence with quantum observables

We introduce a procedure based on quantum expectation values of measurement observables to characterize quantum coherence. Our measure allows one to quantify coherence without having to perform tomography of the quantum state, and can be directly calculated from measurement expectation values. This definition of coherence allows the decomposition into contributions corresponding to the non-classical correlations between the subsystems and localized on each subsystem. The method can also be applied to cases where the full set of measurement operators is unavailable. An estimator using the truncated measurement operators can be used to obtain lower bound to the genuine value of coherence. We illustrate the method for several bipartite systems, and show the singular behavior of the coherence measure in a spin-1 chain, characteristic of a quantum phase transition.

High photon energy spectroscopy of NiO: experiment and theory

We have revisited the valence band electronic structure of NiO by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) together with theoretical calculations using both the GW method and the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approaches. The effective impurity problem in DMFT is solved through the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We show that the LDA+DMFT method alone cannot explain all the observed structures in the HAXPES spectra. GW corrections are required for the O bands and Ni-s and p derived states to properly position their binding energies. Our results establish that a combination of the GW and DMFT methods is necessary for correctly describing the electronic structure of NiO in a proper ab-initio framework. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of photoionization cross section is crucial to interpret the HAXPES spectra of NiO.We argue that our conclusions are general and that the here suggested approach is appropriate for any complex transition metal oxide.
