Localization in one-dimensional relativistic quantum mechanics

We present the relativistic analogue of Anderson localization in one dimension. We use Dirac equation to calculate the transmission probability for a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particle incident upon a rectangular barrier. Using the transfer matrix formalism, we numerically compute the transmission probability for the case of a large number of identical barriers spread randomly in one dimension. The particular case when the incident particle has three component momentum and shows spin-flip phenomena is also considered. Our calculations suggest that the incident relativistic particle shows localization behaviour similar to that of Anderson localization. A number of results which are generalizations of the non-relativistic case are also obtained.

Neutrino spin-flavor oscillations in solar environment

We study the phenomenon of neutrino spin-flavor oscillations due to solar magnetic fields. This allows us to examine how significantly the electron neutrinos produced in the solar interior undergo a resonant spin-flavor conversion. We construct analytical models for the solar magnetic field in all the three regions of the Sun. Neutrino spin-flavor oscillations in these magnetic fields are examined by studying the level crossing phenomenon and comparing the two cases of zero and non-zero vacuum mixing respectively. Results from the Borexino experiment are used to place an upper limit on the magnetic field in the solar core. Related phenomena such as effects of matter on neutrino spin transitions and differences between Dirac and Majorana transitions in the solar magnetic fields are also discussed.

A difference-equation formalism for the nodal domains of separable billiards

Recently, the nodal domain counts of planar, integrable billiards with Dirichlet boundary conditions were shown to satisfy certain difference equations in [Ann. Phys. 351, 1-12 (2014)]. The exact solutions of these equations give the number of domains explicitly. For complete generality, we demonstrate this novel formulation for three additional separable systems and thus extend the statement to all integrable billiards.

Geometric phase for neutrino propagation in magnetic field

The geometric phase for neutrinos propagating in an adiabatically varying magnetic field in matter is calculated. It is shown that for neutrino propagation in sufficiently large magnetic field the neutrino eigenstates develop a significant geometric phase. The geometric phase varies from 2$π$ for magnetic fields $\sim$ fraction of a micro gauss to $π$ for fields $\sim 10^7$ gauss or more. The variation of geometric phase with magnetic field parameters is shown and its phenomenological implications are discussed.

A finite-time exponent for random Ehrenfest gas

We consider the motion of a system of free particles moving on a plane with regular hard polygonal scatterers arranged in a random manner. Calling this the Ehrenfest gas, which is known to have a zero Lyapunov exponent, we propose a finite-time exponent to characterize its dynamics. As the number of sides of the polygon goes to infinity, when polygon tends to a circle, we recover the usual Lyapunov exponent for the Lorentz gas from the exponent proposed here. To obtain this result, we generalize the reflection law of a beam of rays incident on a polygonal scatterer in a way that the formula for the circular scatterer is recovered in the limit of infinite number of vertices. Thus, chaos emerges from pseudochaos in an appropriate limit.

A nodal domain theorem for integrable billiards in two dimensions

Eigenfunctions of integrable planar billiards are studied - in particular, the number of nodal domains, $ν$, of the eigenfunctions are considered. The billiards for which the time-independent Schrödinger equation (Helmholtz equation) is separable admit trivial expressions for the number of domains. Here, we discover that for all separable and non-separable integrable billiards, $ν$ satisfies certain difference equations. This has been possible because the eigenfunctions can be classified in families labelled by the same value of $m\mod kn$, given a particular $k$, for a set of quantum numbers, $m, n$. Further, we observe that the patterns in a family are similar and the algebraic representation of the geometrical nodal patterns is found. Instances of this representation are explained in detail to understand the beauty of the patterns. This paper therefore presents a mathematical connection between integrable systems and difference equations.

Nodal domains of the equilateral triangle billiard

We characterise the eigenfunctions of an equilateral triangle billiard in terms of its nodal domains. The number of nodal domains has a quadratic form in terms of the quantum numbers, with a non-trivial number-theoretic factor. The patterns of the eigenfunctions follow a group-theoretic connection in a way that makes them predictable as one goes from one state to another. Extensive numerical investigations bring out the distribution functions of the mode number and signed areas. The statistics of the boundary intersections is also treated analytically. Finally, the distribution functions of the nodal loop count and the nodal counting function are shown to contain information about the classical periodic orbits using the semiclassical trace formula. We believe that the results belong generically to non-separable systems, thus extending the previous works which are concentrated on separable and chaotic systems.

Quantum Mechanics of a Rotating Billiard

Integrability of a square billiard is spontaneously broken as it rotates about one of its corners. The system becomes quasi-integrable where the invariant tori are broken with respect to a certain parameter, $λ= 2E/ω^{2}$ where E is the energy of the particle inside the billiard and $ω$ is the angular frequency of rotation of billiard. We study the system classically and quantum mechanically in view of obtaining a correspondence in the two descriptions. Classical phase space in Poincaré surface of section shows transition from regular to chaotic motion as the parameter $λ$ is decreased. In the Quantum counterpart, the spectral statistics shows a transition from Poisson to Wigner distribution as the system turns chaotic with decrease in $λ$. The wavefunction statistics however show breakdown of time-reversal symmetry as $λ$ decreases.

Random cyclic matrices

We present a Gaussian ensemble of random cyclic matrices on the real field and study their spectral fluctuations. These cyclic matrices are shown to be pseudo-symmetric with respect to generalized parity. We calculate the joint probability distribution function of eigenvalues and the spacing distributions analytically and numerically. For small spacings, the level spacing distribution exhibits either a Gaussian or a linear form. Furthermore, for the general case of two arbitrary complex eigenvalues, leaving out the spacings among real eigenvalues, and, among complex conjugate pairs, we find that the spacing distribution agrees completely with the Wigner distribution for Poisson process on a plane. The cyclic matrices occur in a wide variety of physical situations, including disordered linear atomic chains and Ising model in two dimensions. These exact results are also relevant to two-dimensional statistical mechanics and $ν$-parametrized quantum chromodynamics.

Random reverse-cyclic matrices and screened harmonic oscillator

We have calculated the joint probability distribution function for random reverse-cyclic matrices and shown that it is related to an N-body exactly solvable model. We refer to this well-known model potential as a screened harmonic oscillator. The connection enables us to obtain all the correlations among the particle positions moving in a screened harmonic potential. The density of nontrivial eigenvalues of this ensemble is found to be of the Wigner form and admits a hole at the origin, in contrast to the semicircle law of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. The spacing distributions assume different forms ranging from Gaussian-like to Wigner.

Record statistics in random vectors and quantum chaos

The record statistics of complex random states are analytically calculated, and shown that the probability of a record intensity is a Bernoulli process. The correlation due to normalization leads to a probability distribution of the records that is non-universal but tends to the Gumbel distribution asymptotically. The quantum standard map is used to study these statistics for the effect of correlations apart from normalization. It is seen that in the mixed phase space regime the number of intensity records is a power law in the dimensionality of the state as opposed to the logarithmic growth for random states.

Kolmogorov stochasticity parameter as a measure of quantum chaos

We propose the Kolmogorov stochasticity parameter, $λ$ for energy level spectra to classify quantum systems with corresponding classical dynamics ranging from integrable to chaotic. We also study the probability distribution function (PDF) of $λ$. Remarkably, the PDF of all the integrable systems studied here is the same and is found to be completely different from the PDF of chaotic systems. We also note that $λ_n$ for $n$ energy levels scales as $λ_n \sim n^{-α}$. Furthermore, with $α$, the stochastic probability (calculated from PDF) is seen to jump by about an order of magnitude as the systems turn chaotic.

Time Delay Plots of Unflavoured Baryons

We explore the usefulness of the existing relations between the $S$-matrix and time delay in characterizing baryon resonances in pion-nucleon scattering. We draw attention to the fact that the existence of a positive maximum in time delay is a necessary criterion for the existence of a resonance and should be used as a constraint in conventional analyses which locate resonances from poles of the $S$-matrix and Argand diagrams. The usefulness of the time delay plots of resonances is demonstrated through a detailed analysis of the time delay in several partial waves of $πN$ elastic scattering.
