Integration of bounded monotone functions: Revisiting the nonsequential case, with a focus on unbiased Monte Carlo (randomized) methods

In this article we revisit the problem of numerical integration for monotone bounded functions, with a focus on the class of nonsequential Monte Carlo methods. We first provide new a lower bound on the maximal $L^p$ error of nonsequential algorithms, improving upon a theorem of Novak when p > 1. Then we concentrate on the case p = 2 and study the maximal error of two unbiased methods-namely, a method based on the control variate technique, and the stratified sampling method.

Numerical issues in maximum likelihood parameter estimation for Gaussian process interpolation

This article investigates the origin of numerical issues in maximum likelihood parameter estimation for Gaussian process (GP) interpolation and investigates simple but effective strategies for improving commonly used open-source software implementations. This work targets a basic problem but a host of studies, particularly in the literature of Bayesian optimization, rely on off-the-shelf GP implementations. For the conclusions of these studies to be reliable and reproducible, robust GP implementations are critical.

Heavy baryon spectrum on lattice with NRQCD bottom and HISQ lighter quarks

We determine the mass spectra of heavy baryons containing one or more bottom quarks along with their hyperfine splittings and various mass differences on MILC 2+1 Asqtad lattices at three different lattice spacings. NRQCD action is used for bottom quarks whereas relativistic HISQ action for the lighter up/down, strange and charm quarks. We consider all possible combinations of bottom and lighter quarks to construct the bottom baryon operators for the states $J^P=1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$.

Clebsch-Gordan Construction of Lattice Interpolating Fields for Excited Baryons

Large sets of baryon interpolating field operators are developed for use in lattice QCD studies of baryons with zero momentum. Operators are classified according to the double-valued irreducible representations of the octahedral group. At first, three-quark smeared, local operators are constructed for each isospin and strangeness and they are classified according to their symmetry with respect to exchange of Dirac indices. Nonlocal baryon operators are formulated in a second step as direct products of the spinor structures of smeared, local operators together with gauge-covariant lattice displacements of one or more of the smeared quark fields. Linear combinations of direct products of spinorial and spatial irreducible representations are then formed with appropriate Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the octahedral group. The construction attempts to maintain maximal overlap with the continuum SU(2) group in order to provide a physically interpretable basis. Nonlocal operators provide direct couplings to states that have nonzero orbital angular momentum.

Combining Quark and Link Smearing to Improve Extended Baryon Operators

The effects of Gaussian quark-field smearing and analytic stout-link smearing on the correlations of gauge-invariant extended baryon operators are studied. Gaussian quark-field smearing substantially reduces contributions from the short wavelength modes of the theory, while stout-link smearing significantly reduces the noise from the stochastic evaluations. The use of gauge-link smearing is shown to be crucial for baryon operators constructed of covariantly-displaced quark fields. Preferred smearing parameters are determined for a lattice spacing a_s ~ 0.1 fm.

On the continuum limit of gauge-fixed compact U(1) lattice gauge theory

We investigate the continuum limit of a compact formulation of the lattice U(1) gauge theory in 4 dimensions using a nonperturbative gauge-fixed regularization. We find clear evidence of a continuous phase transition in the pure gauge theory for all values of the gauge coupling (with gauge symmetry restored). When probed with quenched staggered fermions with U(1) charge, the theory clearly has a chiral transition for large gauge couplings. We identify the only possible region in the parameter space where a continuum limit with nonperturbative physics may appear.
