An extended analysis for a generalized Chaplygin gas model

In this work, we have extended the analysis on the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model as the unification of dark energy and dark matter. Specifically, we have shown that the model of our consideration known as the new generalized Chaplygin gas (NGCG) model, admits a scalar field description, which means that there exist a minimally coupled scalar field for a given scalar field potential where the equation of state is that of the NGCG. With the use of the later property we can construct the slow-roll parameters and derive the corresponding values for the spectral indices for the tensor to scalar perturbation and for the density perturbations. We have also studied the growth rate of matter perturbations in the NGCG scenario. Finally, we have studied the viability of the generalized second law of thermodynamics by assuming that the dynamical apparent horizon in a NGCG universe is endowed with Hawking temperature and Bekenstein entropy.

Dynamical system analysis of logotropic dark fluid with a power law in the rest-mass energy density

We consider a spatially flat FLRW universe. We assume that it is filled with dark energy in the form of logotropic dark fluid coupled with dark matter in the form of a perfect fluid having a barotropic equation of state. We employ dynamical system tools to obtain a complete qualitative idea of the evolution of such a universe. It is interesting to note that we ought to consider an approximation for the pressure of the logotropic dark fluid in the form of an infinite series so as to be able to construct the autonomous system required for a dynamical system study. This series form provides us with a power law in the rest-mass energy density of the logotropic dark fluid. We compute the critical points of the autonomous system and analyze these critical points by applying linear stability theory. Our analysis reveal a scenario of late-time accelerated universe dominated by the logotropic fluid which behaves as cosmological constant, preceded by an intermediate phase of the Universe dominated by logotropic fluid which behaves as dark matter in the form of perfect fluid. Moreover, it also crosses the phantom divide line.

Dynamics of an Interacting Barrow Holographic Dark Energy Model and its Thermodynamic Implications

In this paper, using Barrow entropy, we propose an interacting model of Barrow holographic dark energy (BHDE). In particular, we study the evolution of a spatially flat FLRW universe composed of pressureless dark matter and BHDE that interact with each other through a well-motivated interaction term. Considering the Hubble horizon as the IR cut-off, we then study the evolutionary history of important cosmological parameters, particularly, the density parameter, the equation of state parameter, and the deceleration parameter in the BHDE model and find satisfactory behaviors in the model. We perform a detailed study on the dynamics of the field equations by studying the asymptotic behavior of the field equations, while we write the analytic expression for the scale factor with the use of Laurent series. Finally, we study the implications of gravitational thermodynamics in the interacting BHDE model with the dynamical apparent horizon as the cosmological boundary. In particular, we study the viability of the generalized second law by assuming that the apparent horizon is endowed with Hawking temperature and Barrow entropy.

Testing Lambert$W$ equation of state with observational Hubble parameter data

In this paper, we investigate the possibility that the Universe is driven by a single dark fluid described by a Lambert $W$ equation of state parameter, $w_{eff}$, which is essentially dependent on two parameters $\vartheta_{1}$ and $\vartheta_{2}$ which need to be fixed from observations. We obtain the constraints on these parameters using the latest 51 data points of $H(z)$ measurements, spanning the redshift range $0.07\leq z \leq 2.36$. The present study shows that the Universe is indeed undergoing an accelerated expansion phase following the decelerated one at the transition redshift, $z_{t}=0.77\pm0.03$ ($1σ$) and is well consistent with the recent observations. We also find that at low redshifts, $w_{eff}$ evolves only in the quintessence regime ($-1<w_{eff}<-\frac{1}{3}$) within $1σ$ confidence level. Its present value is found to be $-0.96\pm0.02$ ($1σ$). The fact that the present value of $w_{eff}$ is very close to the Cosmological Constant $Λ$ implies that our proposed equation of state parameter might serve as a unification of dark matter and dark energy. Furthermore, we compare the evolution of $H(z)$ for the model under consideration with that of the $Λ$CDM model. Finally, we observe that for the best-fit case, the differences between the two models are negligible at $z\sim 0.67$.

The Logotropic Dark Fluid: Observational and Thermodynamic Constraints

We have considered a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic FLRW Universe filled with a single fluid, known as logotropic dark fluid (LDF), whose pressure evolves through a logarithmic equation of state. We use the recent Pantheon SNIa and cosmic chronometer datasets to constrain the parameters of this model, the present fraction of dark matter $Ω_{m0}$ and the Hubble constant $H_0$. We find that the mean values of these parameters are $Ω_{m0}=0.288\pm 0.012$ and $H_{0}=69.652\pm 1.698~{\rm km/s/Mpc}$ at the $1σ$ CL. We also find that the LDF model shows a smooth transition from the deceleration phase to acceleration phase of the universe in the recent past. We notice that the redshift of this transition $z_{t}=0.706\pm 0.048$ ($1σ$ error) and is well consistent with the present observations. Interestingly, we find that the Universe will settle down to a $Λ$CDM model in future and there will not be any future singularity in the LDF model. Furthermore, we notice that there is no significant difference between the LDF and $Λ$CDM models at the present epoch, but the difference (at the percent level) between these models is found as the redshift increases. We have also studied the generalized second law of thermodynamics at the dynamical apparent horizon for the LDF model with the Bekenstein and Viaggiu entropies.

The Lambert $W$ function: A newcomer in the Cosmology class?

We propose a novel equation of state (EoS) which explains the evolutionary history of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) Universe. The uniqueness of this EoS lies in the fact that it incorporates the Lambert $W$ function in a special fashion. It is explicitly demonstrated that with observationally relevant values of the unknown parameters $\vartheta_\mathrm{1}$ and $\vartheta_\mathrm{2}$, all the evolutionary phases of the Universe can be reproduced. Moreover, it also shows that the initial singularity is unavoidable and asserts that the late-time acceleration of the Universe would continue forever.

A Study of Universal Thermodynamics in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity

A study of Universal thermodynamics is done in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The Universe is chosen as FRW model bounded by apparent or event horizon. The unified first law is examined, assuming extended Hawking temperature on the horizon. As a result there is a modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizons. Further the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium are also investigated for perfect fluid (with constant equation of state), modified chaplygin gas model and holographic dark energy model.

Cosmological thermodynamics with Hawking temperature on the apparent horizon and Unruh temperature of the fluid: Some interesting consequences

Thermodynamics on the cosmological apparent horizon of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric has been investigated with Bekenstein entropy and Hawking temperature on the horizon, and Unruh temperature for the fluid inside the horizon. This temperature is experienced by a radial comoving observer infinitesimally close to the horizon due to the pressure exerted by the fluid bounded by the horizon. An expression for the entropy of the fluid has been obtained which is found to be proportional to the volume of the thermodynamic system which implies that the Unruh temperature of the fluid is inconsistent with the holographic principle. Further, we have been able to find an expression for the effective entropy of the system. Finally, assuming a barotropic equation of state $p=wρ$ ($w$ constant) for the fluid, it has been shown that the generalized second law holds good for a non-phantom w, while thermodynamic equilibrium is never possible for such a scenario.

Does the particle creation mechanism favour the formation of a black hole or a naked singularity?

The paper deals with collapse dynamics of a spherically symmetric massive star in the framework of non-equilibrium themodynamic prescription through particle creation mechanism. The matter content in the star is in the form of perfect uid with barotropic equation of state and the dissipative phenomena due to non-equilibrium thermodynamics is in the form of bulk viscosity. For simplicity, the thermodynamic system is chosen to be adiabatic (i.e., isentropic) so that the effective bulk viscous pressure is linearly related to the particle creation rate. As a result, the evolution of the collapsing star also depends on the particle creation rate. By proper choice of creation rate as a function of the Hubble parameter, it is found that the end state of the collapse may be either a black hole or a naked singularity.

Modified Hawking temperature and entropic force: a prescription in FRW model

The idea of Verlinde that gravity is an entropic force caused by information changes associated with the positions of material bodies, is used in the present work for the FRW model of the Universe. Using modified Hawking temperature, the Friedmann equations are derived on any horizon. For the validity of the first law of thermodynamics (i.e., Clausius relation) it is found that there is modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizon. However, using equipartition law of energy, Bekenstein entropy is recovered.

Universal thermodynamics in different gravity theories: Conditions for generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium on the horizons

The present work deals with a detailed study of universal thermodynamics in different modified gravity theories. The validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) and thermodynamical equilibrium (TE) of the Universe bounded by a horizon (apparent/event) in f(R)-gravity, Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, RS-II brane scenario and DGP brane model has been investigated. In the perspective of recent observational evidences, the matter in the Universe is chosen as interacting holographic dark energy model. The entropy on the horizons are evaluated from the validity of the unified first law and as a result there is a correction (in integral form) to the usual Bekenstein entropy. The other thermodynamical parameter namely temperature on the horizon is chosen as the recently introduced corrected Hawking temperature. The above thermodynamical analysis is done for homogeneous and isotropic flat FLRW model of the Universe. The restrictions for the validity of GSLT and the TE are presented in tabular form for each gravity theory. Finally, due to complicated expressions, the validity of GSLT and TE are also examined from graphical representation, using three Planck data sets.

A complete cosmic scenario from inflation to late time acceleration: Non-equilibrium thermodynamics in the context of particle creation

The paper deals with the mechanism of particle creation in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. The second order non-equilibrium thermodynamical prescription of Israel and Stewart has been presented with particle creation rate, treated as the dissipative effect. In the background of a flat FRW model, we assume the non-equilibrium thermodynamical process to be isentropic so that the entropy per particle does not change and consequently the dissipative pressure can be expressed linearly in terms of the particle creation rate. Here the dissipative pressure behaves as a dynamical variable having a non-linear inhomogeneous evolution equation and the entropy flow vector satisfies the second law of thermodynamics. Further, using the Friedmann equations and by proper choice of the particle creation rate as a function of the Hubble parameter, it is possible to show (separately) a transition from the inflationary phase to the radiation era and also from matter dominated era to late time acceleration. Also, in analogy to analytic continuation, it is possible to show a continuous cosmic evolution from inflation to late time acceleration by adjusting the parameters. It is found that in the de Sitter phase, the comoving entropy increases exponentially with time, keeping entropy per particle unchanged. Subsequently, the above cosmological scenarios has been described from field theoretic point of view by introducing a scalar field having self interacting potential. Finally, we make an attempt to show the cosmological phenomenon of particle creation as Hawking radiation, particularly during the inflationary era.

A redefinition of Hawking temperature on the event horizon: Thermodynamical equilibrium

In this article we have used the recently introduced redefined Hawking temperature on the event horizon and investigated whether the generalised second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) and thermodynamic equilibrium holds for both the event and the apparent horizons. Here we have considered FRW universe and examined the GSLT and thermodynamic equilibrium with three examples. Finally, we have concluded that from the thermodynamic viewpoint, the universe bounded by the event horizon is more realistic than that by the apparent horizon at least for some examples.

A study of different horizons in inhomogeneous LTB cosmological model

This work deals with a detailed study of the dynamics of the apparent, event and particle horizons in the background of the inhomogeneous LTB spacetime. The comparative study among these horizons shows a distinct character for apparent horizon compared to the other horizons. The apparent horizon will be a trapping horizon if its acceleration is positive. The Kodama vector is also defined and its causal character is found to be similar to that in the FRW model.

As a result there is a modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizons. Further the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium are also investigated.

A unified cosmic evolution: Inflation to late time acceleration

The present work deals with a cosmological model having particle creation mechanism in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. In the second order non-equilibrium thermodynamical prescription, the particle creation rate is treated as the dissipative effect. The non-equilibrium thermodynamical process is assumed to be isentropic, and, as a consequence, the entropy per particle is constant, and, hence, the dissipative pressure can be expressed linearly in terms of the particle creation rate in the background of the homogeneous and isotropic flat FLRW model. By proper choice of the particle creation rate as a function of the Hubble parameter, the model shows the evolution of the universe starting from the inflationary scenario to the present accelerating phase, considering the cosmic matter as normal perfect fluid with barotropic equation of state.

Particle creation and non-equilibrium thermodynamical prescription of dark fluids for universe bounded by an event horizon

In the present work, flat FRW model of the universe is considered to be an isolated open thermodynamical system where non-equilibrium prescription has been studied using the mechanism of particle creation. In the perspective of recent observational evidences, the matter distribution in the universe is assumed to be dominated by dark matter and dark energy. The dark matter is chosen as dust while for dark energy, the following choices are considered: (i) Perfect fluid with constant equation of state and (ii) Holographic dark energy. In both the cases, the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) which states that the total entropy of the fluid as well as that of the horizon should not decrease with the evolution of the universe, has been examined graphically for universe bounded by the event horizon. It is found that GSLT holds in both the cases with some restrictions on the interacting coupling parameter.

Particle Production and Universal Thermodynamics

In the present work, particle creation mechanism has been employed to the Universe as a thermodynamical system. The Universe is considered to be a spatially flat FRW model and cosmic fluid is chosen as a perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state -- $p = (γ-1)ρ$. By proper choice of the particle creation rate, expressions for the entropy and temperature have been determined at various stages of evolution of the Universe. Finally, using the deceleration parameter $q$ as a function of the redshift parameter $z$ based on recent observations, the particle creation rate has been evaluated and its variation at different epochs have been shown graphically.

Quantum corrected non-thermal radiation spectrum from the tunnelling mechanism

Tunnelling mechanism is today considered a popular and widely used method in describing Hawking radiation. However, in relation to black hole (BH) emission, this mechanism is mostly used to obtain the Hawking temperature by comparing the probability of emission of an outgoing particle with the Boltzmann factor. On the other hand, Banerjee and Majhi reformulated the tunnelling framework deriving a black body spectrum through the density matrix for the outgoing modes for both the Bose-Einstein distribution and the Fermi-Dirac distribution. In contrast, Parikh and Wilczek introduced a correction term performing an exact calculation of the action for a tunnelling spherically symmetric particle and, as a result, the probability of emission of an outgoing particle corresponds to a non-strictly thermal radiation spectrum. Recently, one of us (C. Corda) introduced a BH effective state and was able to obtain a non-strictly black body spectrum from the tunnelling mechanism corresponding to the probability of emission of an outgoing particle found by Parikh and Wilczek. The present work introduces the quantum corrected effective temperature and the corresponding quantum corrected effective metric is written using Hawking's periodicity arguments. Thus, we obtain further corrections to the non-strictly thermal BH radiation spectrum as the final distributions take into account both the BH dynamical geometry during the emission of the particle and the quantum corrections to the semiclassical Hawking temperature.

Universal thermodynamics in different gravity theories: Modified entropy on the horizons

The paper deals with universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the universe bounded by apparent (or event) horizon. Assuming Hawking temperature on the horizon, the unified first law is examined on the horizon for different gravity theories. The results show that equilibrium configuration is preserved with a modification to Bekenstein entropy on the horizon.

A third alternative to explain recent observations: Future deceleration

In the present work we discuss a third alternative to explain the latest observational data concerning the accelerating Universe and its different stages. The particle creation mechanism in the framework of non-equilibrium thermodynamics is considered as a basic cosmic mechanism acting on the flat FRW geometry. By assuming that the gravitationally induced particle production occurs under "adiabatic" conditions, the deceleration parameter is expressed in terms of the particle creation rate which is chosen as a truncated power series of the Hubble parameter. The model shows the evolution of the Universe starting from inflation to the present late time acceleration and it also predicts future decelerating stage.

Do recent observations favor a cosmological event horizon: A thermodynamical prescription?

Recent observational evidences claim an accelerating expansion of the universe at present epoch. It is commonly incorporated in standard cosmology by the introduction of an exotic matter (that violates the strong energy condition) known as dark energy (DE). As event horizon exists for accelerating universe so there has been a lot of work on universal thermodynamics (i.e., thermodynamics of the universe bounded by apparent or event horizon). Recently, thermodynamical equilibrium has been examined for both the horizons. In the present work we show that universal thermodynamics with event horizon is favored by DE from the point of view of equilibrium thermodynamical prescription.

Irreversible Thermodynamics of the Universe: Constraints from Planck Data

The present work deals with irreversible Universal thermodynamics. The homogenous and isotropic flat model of the universe is chosen as open thermodynamical system and non-equilibrium thermodynamics comes into picture due to the mechanism of particle creation. For simplicity, entropy flow is considered only due to heat conduction. Further, due to Maxwell-Cattaneo modified Fourier law for non-equilibrium phenomenon, the temperature satisfies damped wave equation instead of heat conduction equation. Validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) has been investigated for Universe bounded by apparent or event horizon with cosmic substrutum as perfect fluid with constant or variable equation of state or interacting dark species. Finally, we have used three Planck data sets to constrain the thermal conductivity λand the coupling parameter b^2. These constraints must be satisfied in order for GSLT to hold for Universe bounded by apparent or event horizons.
