On solutions of codimension-one $A$-hypergeometric systems

By a codimension-one system we mean a system whose lattice of relations has rank one. We consider codimension-one $A$-hypergeometric systems and explicitly construct some of the logarithmic series solutions at the origin. When the parameter vector $β$ is nonresonant we obtain a full set of logarithmic series solutions at the origin by this procedure. We also determine when a codimension-one system with nonresonant parameter can have maximal unipotent monodromy at the origin.

$A$-hypergeometric series and a $p$-adic refinement of the Hasse-Witt matrix

We identify the $p$-adic unit roots of the zeta function of a projective hypersurface over a finite field of characteristic $p$ as the eigenvalues of a product of special values of a certain matrix of $p$-adic series. That matrix is a product $F(Λ^p)^{-1}F(Λ)$, where the entries in the matrix $F(Λ)$ are $A$-hypergeometric series with integral coefficients and $F(Λ)$ is independent of $p$.

Hypergeometric decomposition of symmetric K3 quartic pencils

We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.

On the $p$-integrality of $A$-hypergeometric series

Let $A$ be a set of $N$ vectors in ${\mathbb Z}^n$ and let $v$ be a vector in ${\mathbb C}^N$ that has minimal negative support for $A$. Such a vector $v$ gives rise to a formal series solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system with parameter $β= Av$. If $v$ lies in ${\mathbb Q}^n$, then this series has rational coefficients. Let $p$ be a prime number. We characterize those $v$ whose coordinates are rational, $p$-integral, and lie in the closed interval $[-1,0]$ for which the corresponding normalized series solution has $p$-integral coefficients.

On logarithmic solutions of A-hypergeometric systems

For an $A$-hypergeometric system with parameter $β$, a vector $v$ with minimal negative support satisfying $Av = β$ gives rise to a logarithm-free series solution. We find conditions on $v$ analogous to `minimal negative support' that guarantee the existence of logarithmic solutions of the system and we give explicit formulas for those solutions. Although we do not study in general the question of when these logarithmic solutions lie in a Nilsson ring, we do examine the $A$-hypergeometric systems corresponding to the Picard-Fuchs equations of certain families of complete intersections and we state a conjecture regarding the integrality of the associated mirror maps.

$A$-hypergeometric series associated to a lattice polytope with a unique interior lattice point

We associate to lattice points a_0,a_1,...,a_N in Z^n an A-hypergeometric series Φ(λ) with integer coefficients. If a_0 is the unique interior lattice point of the convex hull of a_1,...,a_N, then for every prime p\neq 2 the ratio Φ(λ)/Φ(λ^p) has a p-adic analytic continuation to a closed unit polydisk minus a neighborhood of a hypersurface.

Families of generalized Kloosterman sums

We construct p-adic relative cohomology for a family of toric exponential sums which generalize the classical Kloosterman sums. Under natural hypotheses such as quasi-homogeneity and nondegeneracy, this cohomology is acyclic except in the top dimension. Our construction enables sufficiently sharp estimates for the action of Frobenius on cohomology so that our earlier work may be applied to the L-functions coming from linear algebra operations on these families to deduce a number of basic properties.

L-functions associated with families of toric exponential sums

We consider arbitrary algebraic families of lower order deformations of nondegenerate toric exponential sums over a finite field. We construct a relative polytope with the aid of which we define a ring of coefficients consisting of p-adic analytic functions with polyhedral growth prescribed by the relative polytope. Using this we compute relative cohomology for such families and calculate sharp estimates for the relative Frobenius map. In applications one is interested in L-functions associated with linear algebra operations (symmetric powers, tensor powers, exterior powers and combinations thereof) applied to the relative Frobenius. Using methods pioneered by Ax, Katz and Bombieri we prove estimates for the degree and total degree of the associated L-function and p-divisibility of the reciprocal zeros and poles. Similar estimates are then established for affine families and pure Archimedean weight families (in the simplicial case).

$p$-adic estimates for multiplicative character sums

This article is an expanded version of the talk given by the first author at the conference "Exponential sums over finite fields and applications" (ETH, Zürich, November, 2010). We state some conjectures on archimedian and $p$-adic estimates for multiplicative character sums over smooth projective varieties. We also review some of the results of J. Dollarhide, which formed the basis for these conjectures. Applying his results, we prove one of the conjectures when the smooth projective variety is ${\mathbb P}^n$ itself.

On unit root formulas for toric exponential sums

Starting from a classical generating series for Bessel functions due to Schlomilch, we use Dwork's relative dual theory to broadly generalize unit-root results of Dwork on Kloosterman sums and Sperber on hyperkloosterman sums. In particular, we express the (unique) p-adic unit root of an arbitrary exponential sum on the torus in terms of special values of the p-adic analytic continuation of a ratio of A-hypergeometric functions. In contrast with the earlier works, we use noncohomological methods and obtain results that are valid for arbitrary exponential sums without any hypothesis of nondegeneracy.
