Automorphic Bloch theorems for hyperbolic lattices

Hyperbolic lattices are a new form of synthetic quantum matter in which particles effectively hop on a discrete tessellation of 2D hyperbolic space, a non-Euclidean space of uniform negative curvature. To describe the single-particle eigenstates and eigenenergies for hopping on such a lattice, a hyperbolic generalization of band theory was previously constructed, based on ideas from algebraic geometry. In this hyperbolic band theory, eigenstates are automorphic functions, and the Brillouin zone is a higher-dimensional torus, the Jacobian of the compactified unit cell understood as a higher-genus Riemann surface. Three important questions were left unanswered: whether a band theory can be expected to hold for a non-Euclidean lattice, where translations do not generally commute; whether a formal Bloch theorem can be rigorously established; and whether hyperbolic band theory can describe finite lattices realized in experiment. In the present work, we address all three questions simultaneously. By formulating periodic boundary conditions for finite but arbitrarily large lattices, we show that a generalized Bloch theorem can be rigorously proved, but may or may not involve higher-dimensional irreducible representations (irreps) of the nonabelian translation group, depending on the lattice geometry. Higher-dimensional irreps corrrespond to points in a moduli space of higher-rank stable holomorphic vector bundles, which further generalizes the notion of Brillouin zone beyond the Jacobian. For a large class of finite lattices, only 1D irreps appear, and the hyperbolic band theory previously developed becomes exact.

Crystallography of Hyperbolic Lattices

Hyperbolic lattices are a revolutionary platform for tabletop simulations of holography and quantum physics in curved space and facilitate efficient quantum error correcting codes. Their underlying geometry is non-Euclidean, and the absence of Bloch's theorem precludes the straightforward application of the often indispensable energy band theory to study model Hamiltonians on hyperbolic lattices. Motivated by recent insights into hyperbolic band theory, we initiate a crystallography of hyperbolic lattices. We show that many hyperbolic lattices feature a hidden crystal structure characterized by unit cells, hyperbolic Bravais lattices, and associated symmetry groups. Using the mathematical framework of higher-genus Riemann surfaces and Fuchsian groups, we derive, for the first time, a list of example hyperbolic $\{p,q\}$ lattices and their hyperbolic Bravais lattices, including five infinite families and several graphs relevant for experiments in circuit quantum electrodynamics and topolectrical circuits. This dramatically simplifies the computation of energy spectra of tight-binding Hamiltonians on hyperbolic lattices, from exact diagonalization on the graph to solving a finite set of equations in terms of irreducible representations. The significance of this achievement needs to be compared to the all-important role played by conventional Euclidean crystallography in the study of solids. We exemplify the high potential of this approach by constructing and diagonalizing finite-dimensional Bloch wave Hamiltonians. Our work lays the foundation for generalizing some of the most powerful concepts of solid state physics, crystal momentum and Brillouin zone, to the emerging field of hyperbolic lattices and tabletop simulations of gravitational theories, and reveals the connections to concepts from topology and algebraic geometry.

The Calogero-Françoise integrable system: algebraic geometry, Higgs fields, and the inverse problem

We review the Calogero-Françoise integrable system, which is a generalization of the Camassa-Holm system. We express solutions as (twisted) Higgs bundles, in the sense of Hitchin, over the projective line. We use this point of view to (a) establish a general answer to the question of linearization of isospectral flow and (b) demonstrate, in the case of two particles, the dynamical meaning of the theta divisor of the spectral curve in terms of mechanical collisions. Lastly, we outline the solution to the inverse problem for CF flows using Stieltjes' continued fractions.

Nonabelian Hodge theory and vector valued modular forms

We examine the relationship between nonabelian Hodge theory for Riemann surfaces and the theory of vector valued modular forms. In particular, we explain how one might use this relationship to prove a conjectural three-term inequality on the weights of free bases of vector valued modular forms associated to complex, finite dimensional, irreducible representations of the modular group. This conjecture is known for irreducible unitary representations and for all irreducible representations of dimension at most 12. We prove new instances of the three-term inequality for certain nonunitary representations, corresponding to a class of maximally-decomposed variations of Hodge structure, by considering the same inequality with respect to a new type of modular form, called a "Higgs form", that arises naturally on the Dolbeault side of nonabelian Hodge theory. The paper concludes with a discussion of a strategy for reducing the general case of nilpotent Higgs bundles to the case under consideration in our main theorem.

Some results on equivariant contact geometry for partial flag varieties

We study equivariant contact structures on complex projective varieties arising as partial flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a connected, simply-connected complex simple group of type $ADE$ and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup. We prove a special case of the LeBrun-Salamon conjecture for partial flag varieties of these types. The result can be deduced from Boothby's classification of compact simply-connected complex contact manifolds with transitive action by contact automorphisms, but our proof is completely independent and relies on properties of $G$-equivariant vector bundles on $G/P$. A byproduct of our argument is a canonical, global description of the unique $SO_{2n}(\mathbb C)$-invariant contact structure on the isotropic Grassmannian of $2$-planes in $\mathbb C^{2n}$.

Hyperpolygons and Hitchin systems

We study the hyperkähler analogues of moduli spaces of semistable n-gons in complex projective space. We prove that the hyperkähler Kirwan map is surjective and produce a formula that recursively calculates the Betti numbers of these spaces for all ranks. Building on a natural analogy between hyperpolygons and parabolic Higgs bundles, we identify hyperpolygon spaces with certain degenerate Hitchin systems, and use this to establish their complete integrability, for ranks up to and including 3.

Co-Higgs bundles on P^1

Co-Higgs bundles are Higgs bundles in the sense of Simpson, but with Higgs fields that take values in the tangent bundle instead of the cotangent bundle. Given a vector bundle on P^1, we find necessary and sufficient conditions on its Grothendieck splitting for it to admit a stable Higgs field. We characterize the rank-2, odd-degree moduli space as a universal elliptic curve with a globally-defined equation. For ranks r=2,3,4, we explicitly verify the conjectural Betti numbers emerging from the recent work of Chuang, Diaconescu, Pan, and Mozgovoy on the ADHM formula. We state the result for r=5.

Constructing co-Higgs bundles on CP^2

On a complex manifold, a co-Higgs bundle is a holomorphic vector bundle with an endomorphism twisted by the tangent bundle. The notion of generalized holomorphic bundle in Hitchin's generalized geometry coincides with that of co-Higgs bundle when the generalized complex manifold is ordinary complex. Schwarzenberger's rank-2 vector bundle on the projective plane, constructed from a line bundle on the double cover CP^1 \times CP^1 \to CP^2, is naturally a co-Higgs bundle, with the twisted endomorphism, or "Higgs field", also descending from the double cover. Allowing the branch conic to vary, we find that Schwarzenberger bundles give rise to an 8-dimensional moduli space of co-Higgs bundles. After studying the deformation theory for co-Higgs bundles on complex manifolds, we conclude that a co-Higgs bundle arising from a Schwarzenberger bundle with nonzero Higgs field is rigid, in the sense that a nearby deformation is again Schwarzenberger.
