Herschel observations of EXtra-Ordinary Sources: Analysis of the HIFI 1.2 THz Wide Spectral Survey Toward Orion KL I. Methods

We present a comprehensive analysis of a broad band spectral line survey of the Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula (Orion KL), one of the most chemically rich regions in the Galaxy, using the HIFI instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This survey spans a frequency range from 480 to 1907 GHz at a resolution of 1.1 MHz. These observations thus encompass the largest spectral coverage ever obtained toward this high-mass star-forming region in the sub-mm with high spectral resolution, and include frequencies $>$ 1 THz where the Earth's atmosphere prevents observations from the ground. In all, we detect emission from 39 molecules (79 isotopologues). Combining this dataset with ground based mm spectroscopy obtained with the IRAM 30 m telescope, we model the molecular emission from the mm to the far-IR using the XCLASS program which assumes local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). Several molecules are also modeled with the MADEX non-LTE code. Because of the wide frequency coverage, our models are constrained by transitions over an unprecedented range in excitation energy. A reduced $χ^{2}$ analysis indicates that models for most species reproduce the observed emission well. In particular, most complex organics are well fit by LTE implying gas densities are high ($>$10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$) and excitation temperatures and column densities are well constrained. Molecular abundances are computed using H$_{2}$ column densities also derived from the HIFI survey. The distribution of rotation temperatures, $T_{\rm rot}$, for molecules detected toward the hot core is significantly wider than the compact ridge, plateau, and extended ridge $T_{\rm rot}$ distributions, indicating the hot core has the most complex thermal structure.

Riemannian manifolds in noncommutative geometry

We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spin^c manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spin^c structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.

Traces of compact operators and the noncommutative residue

We extend the noncommutative residue of M. Wodzicki on compactly supported classical pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ and generalise A. Connes' trace theorem, which states that the residue can be calculated using a singular trace on compact operators. Contrary to the role of the noncommutative residue for the classical pseudo-differential operators, a corollary is that the pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ do not have a `unique' trace; pseudo-differential operators can be non-measurable in Connes' sense. Other corollaries are given clarifying the role of Dixmier traces in noncommutative geometry à la Connes, including the definitive statement of Connes' original theorem.

Measure Theory in Noncommutative Spaces

The integral in noncommutative geometry (NCG) involves a non-standard trace called a Dixmier trace. The geometric origins of this integral are well known. From a measure-theoretic view, however, the formulation contains several difficulties. We review results concerning the technical features of the integral in NCG and some outstanding problems in this area. The review is aimed for the general user of NCG.

Measures from Dixmier Traces and Zeta Functions

For essentially bounded functions on a (closed) compact Riemannian manifold, the noncommutative residue and the Dixmier trace formulation of the noncommutative integral are shown to equate to a multiple of the Lebesgue integral. The identifications are shown to continue to, and be sharp at, square integrable functions. To do better than square integrable, symmetrised noncommutative residue and Dixmier trace formulas are introduced, for which the identifications are shown to continue to $L^{1+ε}$-spaces, $ε> 0$. However, a failure is shown for the Dixmier trace formulation at integrable functions. The (symmetrised) noncommutative residue and Dixmier trace formulas diverge at this point. It is shown the noncommutative residue remains finite and recovers the Lebesgue integral for any integrable function while the Dixmier trace expression can diverge. The results show the claim (in the monograph "Elements of Noncommutative Geometry", Birkhauser, 2001), that the identification on smooth functions obtained using Connes' Trace Theorem can be extended to any integrable function, is false.

The Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey: Comparison of Ultraviolet and Far-Infrared Properties

The Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) consists of a complete sample of 202 Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) selected from the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS). The galaxies span the full range of interaction stages, from isolated galaxies to interacting pairs to late stage mergers. We present a comparison of the UV and infrared properties of 135 galaxies in GOALS observed by GALEX and Spitzer. For interacting galaxies with separations greater than the resolution of GALEX and Spitzer (2-6"), we assess the UV and IR properties of each galaxy individually. The contribution of the FUV to the measured SFR ranges from 0.2% to 17.9%, with a median of 2.8% and a mean of 4.0 +/- 0.4%. The specific star formation rate of the GOALS sample is extremely high, with a median value (3.9*10^{-10} yr^{-1}) that is comparable to the highest specific star formation rates seen in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey sample. We examine the position of each galaxy on the IR excess-UV slope (IRX-beta) diagram as a function of galaxy properties, including IR luminosity and interaction stage. The LIRGs on average have greater IR excesses than would be expected based on their UV colors if they obeyed the same relations as starbursts with L_IR < 10^{11}L_0 or normal late-type galaxies. The ratio of L_IR to the value one would estimate from the IRXg-beta relation published for lower luminosity starburst galaxies ranges from 0.2 to 68, with a median value of 2.7. A minimum of 19% of the total IR luminosity in the RBGS is produced in LIRGs and ULIRGs with red UV colors (beta > 0). Among resolved interacting systems, 32% contain one galaxy which dominates the IR emission while the companion dominates the UV emission. Only 21% of the resolved systems contain a single galaxy which dominates both wavelengths.

Noncommutative Residues and a Characterisation of the Noncommutative Integral

We continue the study of the relationship between Dixmier traces and noncommutative residues initiated by A. Connes. The utility of the residue approach to Dixmier traces is shown by a characterisation of the noncommutative integral in Connes' noncommutative geometry (for a wide class of Dixmier traces) as a generalised limit of vector states associated to the eigenvectors of a compact operator (or an unbounded operator with compact resolvent), i.e. as a generalised quantum limit. Using the characterisation, a criteria involving the eigenvectors of a compact operator and the projections of a von Neumann subalgebra of bounded operators is given so that the noncommutative integral associated to the compact operator is normal, i.e. satisfies a monotone convergence theorem, for the von Neumann subalgebra.

Tracing PAHs and Warm Dust Emission in the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1068

We present a study of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 using mid- and far- infrared data acquired with the IRAC, IRS, and MIPS instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The images show extensive 8 um and 24 um emission coinciding with star formation in the inner spiral approximately 15" (1 kpc) from the nucleus, and a bright complex of star formation 47" (3 kpc) SW of the nucleus. The brightest 8 um PAH emission regions coincide remarkably well with knots observed in an Halpha image. Strong PAH features at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 um are detected in IRS spectra measured at numerous locations inside, within, and outside the inner spiral. The IRAC colors and IRS spectra of these regions rule out dust heated by the AGN as the primary emission source; the SEDs are dominated by starlight and PAH emission. The equivalent widths and flux ratios of the PAH features in the inner spiral are generally consistent with conditions in a typical spiral galaxy ISM. Interior to the inner spiral, the influence of the AGN on the ISM is evident via PAH flux ratios indicative of a higher ionization parameter and a significantly smaller mean equivalent width than observed in the inner spiral. The brightest 8 and 24 um emission peaks in the disk of the galaxy, even at distances beyond the inner spiral, are located within the ionization cones traced by [O III]/Hbeta, and they are also remarkably well aligned with the axis of the radio jets. Although it is possible that radiation from the AGN may directly enhance PAH excitation or trigger the formation of OB stars that subsequently excite PAH emission at these locations in the inner spiral, the orientation of collimated radiation from the AGN and star formation knots in the inner spiral could be coincidental. Dixmier Traces as Singular Symmetric Functionals and Applications to Measurable Operators

This paper introduces a new approach to the non-normal Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces (introduced by Dixmier and adapted to non-commutative geometry by Connes) on a general Marcinkiewicz space associated with an arbitrary semifinite von Neumann algebra. By unifying various constructions, and translating the situation of Dixmier traces into the theory of singular symmetric functionals on Marcinkiewicz function/operator spaces, we obtain the results (i) and (ii) below. The results are stated here, for the reader, in terms of the ideal $L^{(1,\infty)}$ of compact operators whose partial sums of singular values are of logarithmic divergence. (i) a positive compact operator $x$ in $L^{(1,\infty)}$ yields the same value for an arbitrary Connes-Dixmier trace (ie. $x$ is measurable in the sense of Connes) if and only if $\lim_{N\to\infty} \frac{1}{Log N}\sum_{n=1}^N s_n(x)$ exists, where $s_n(x)$ are the singular values of the compact operator $x$; (ii) the set of Dixmier traces and the set of Connes-Dixmier traces are norming sets (up to equivalence) for the space $L^{(1,\infty)}/L^{(1,\infty)}_0$, where the space $L^{(1,\infty)}_0$ is the closure of all finite rank operators in the norm $||.||_{(1,\infty)}$.
