Existence of Nonnegative Solutions of Nonlinear Fractional Parabolic Inequalities

We study the existence of nontrivial nonlocal nonnegative solutions u(x,t)u(x,t) of the nonlinear initial value problems (∂t−Δ)αu≥uλin Rn×R, n≥1 (\partial_t -Δ)^αu\geq u^λ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times\mathbb{R},\,n\geq 1 u=0in Rn×(−∞,0) u=0 \quad\text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times(-\infty,0) and C1uλ≤(∂t−Δ)αu≤C2uλin Rn×R, n≥1 C_1 u^λ\leq(\partial_t -Δ)^αu\leq C_2 u^λ\quad\text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times\mathbb{R},\,n\geq1 u=0in Rn×(−∞,0), u=0 \quad\text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times(-\infty,0), where λ,α,C1λ,α,C_1, and C2C_2 are positive constants with C1<C2C_1 <C_2. We use the definition of the fractional heat operator (∂t−Δ)α(\partial_t -Δ)^α given in [Taliaferro, 2020] and compare our results in the classical case α=1α=1 to known results.

Asymptotic behavior at isolated singularities for solutions of nonlocal semilinear elliptic systems of inequalities

We study the behavior near the origin of C2C^2 positive solutions u(x)u(x) and v(x)v(x) of the system 0≤−Δu≤(1∣x∣α∗v)λ0\le -Δu \le (\frac{1}{|x|^α}* v)^λ 0≤−Δv≤(1∣x∣β∗u)σ0\le -Δv \le (\frac{1}{|x|^β}* u)^σ in B2(0)∖{0}⊂RnB_2(0)\setminus\{0\} \subset R^n, n≥3n\ge 3, where λ,σ≥0λ,σ\ge 0 and α,β∈(0,n)α,β\in (0,n). A by-product of our methods used to study these solutions will be results on the behavior near the origin of L1(B1(0))L^1(B_1(0)) solutions ff and gg of the system 0≤f(x)≤C(∣x∣2−α+∫∣y∣<1g(y)dy∣x−y∣α−2)λ0 \le f(x) \le C(|x|^{2-α} + \int_{|y|<1}\frac{ g(y) dy}{|x-y|^{α-2}} )^λ 0≤g(x)≤C(∣x∣2−β+∫∣y∣<1f(y)dy∣x−y∣β−2)σ0 \le g(x) \le C(|x|^{2-β} + \int_{|y|<1}\frac{ f(y) dy}{|x-y|^{β-2}} )^σ for 0<∣x∣<10<|x|<1 where λ,σ≥0λ,σ\ge 0 and α,β∈(2,n+2)α, β\in (2,n+2).

Pointwise Bounds and Blow-up for Choquard-Pekar Inequalities at an Isolated Singularity

We study the behavior near the origin in Rn,n≥3\mathbb{R}^n ,n\geq3, of nonnegative functions \begin{equation}\label{0.1} u\in C^2 (\mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\})\cap L^λ(\mathbb{R}^n ) \end{equation} satisfying the Choquard-Pekar type inequalities \begin{equation}\label{0.2} 0\leq-Δu\leq(|x|^{-α}*u^λ)u^σ\quad\text{ in }B_2 (0)\backslash \{0\} \end{equation} where α∈(0,n),λ>0,α\in(0,n),λ>0, and σ≥0σ\geq0 are constants and ∗* is the convolution operation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n. We provide optimal conditions on α,λα,λ, and σσ such that nonnegative solutions uu satisfy pointwise bounds near the origin.

Pointwise Bounds and Blow-up for Nonlinear Polyharmonic Inequalities

We obtain results for the following question where m≥1m\ge 1 and n≥2n\ge 2 are integers. Question. For which continuous functions f ⁣:[0,∞)→[0,∞)f\colon [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty) does there exist a continuous function φ ⁣:(0,1)→(0,∞)φ\colon (0,1)\to (0,\infty) such that every C2mC^{2m} nonnegative solution u(x)u(x) of 0≤−Δmu≤f(u) 0 \le -Δ^m u\le f(u)\quad in B2(0)∖{0}⊂RnB_2(0)\setminus\{0\}\subset {\bf R}^n satisfies u(x)=O(φ(∣x∣))as x→0u(x) = O(φ(|x|))\quad \text{as } x\to 0 and what is the optimal such φφ when one exists?

Pointwise Bounds and Blow-up for Systems of Semilinear Parabolic Inequalities and Nonlinear Heat Potential Estimates

We study the behavior for tt small and positive of C2,1C^{2,1} nonnegative solutions u(x,t)u(x,t) and v(x,t)v(x,t) of the system 0≤ut−Δu≤vλ0\leq u_t-Δu\leq v^λ 0≤vt−Δv≤uσ0\leq v_t-Δv\leq u^σ in Ω×(0,1)Ω\times (0,1), where λλ and σσ are nonnegative constants and ΩΩ is an open subset of Rn{\mathbb R}^n, n≥1n\ge 1. We provide optimal conditions on λλ and σσ such that solutions of this system satisfy pointwise bounds in compact subsets of ΩΩ as t→0+t\to 0^+. Our approach relies on new pointwise bounds for nonlinear heat potentials which are the parabolic analog of similar bounds for nonlinear Riesz potentials.

Nonexistence of Positive Supersolutions of Nonlinear Biharmonic Equations without the Maximum Principle

We study classical positive solutions of the biharmonic inequality −Δ2v≥f(v)-Δ^2 v \geq f(v) in exterior domains in Rn\mathbb{R}^n where f:(0,∞)→(0,∞)f:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty) is continuous function. We give lower bounds on the growth of f(s)f(s) at s=0s=0 and/or s=∞s=\infty such that this inequality has no C4C^4 positive solution in any exterior domain of Rn\mathbb R^n. Similar results were obtained by Armstrong and Sirakov [ Nonexistence of positive supersolutions of elliptic equations via the maximum principle, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 36 (2011) 2011-2047] for −Δv≥f(v)-Δv\ge f(v) using a method which depends only on properties related to the maximum principle. Since the maximum principle does not hold for the biharmonic operator, we adopt a different approach which relies on a new representation formula and an a priori pointwise bound for nonnegative solutions of −Δ2u≥0-Δ^2u \ge 0 in a punctured neighborhood of the origin in Rn\mathbb{R}^n.

Pointwise Bounds and Blow-up for Systems of Semilinear Elliptic Inequalities at an Isolated Singularity via Nonlinear Potential Estimates

We study the behavior near the origin of C2C^2 positive solutions u(x)u(x) and v(x)v(x) of the system 0≤−Δu≤f(v)0\leq -Δu\leq f(v) 0≤−Δv≤g(u)0\leq -Δv\leq g(u) in B1(0)\{0}B_1(0)\backslash\{0\} where f,g:(0,∞)→(0,∞)f,g:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty) are continuous functions. We provide optimal conditions on ff and gg at ∞\infty such that solutions of this system satisfy pointwise bounds near the origin. In dimension n=2n=2 we show that this property holds if log⁡+f\log^+ f or log⁡+g\log^+g grow at most linearly at infinity. In dimension n≥3n\geq 3 and under the assumption f(t)=O(tλ)f(t)=O(t^λ), g(t)=O(tσ)g(t)=O(t^σ) as t→∞t\to \infty, (λ,σ≥0λ, σ\geq 0), we obtain a new critical curve that optimally describes the existence of such pointwise bounds. Our approach relies in part on sharp estimates of nonlinear potentials which appear naturally in this context.

Semilinear elliptic inequalities in the exterior of a compact set

We study the semilinear elliptic inequality −Δu≥φ(δK(x))f(u)-Δu\geqφ(δ_K(x))f(u) in RN∖K,R^N\setminus K, where φ,fφ, f are non-negative and continuous functions, K⊂RNK\subset R^N (N≥2)(N\geq 2) is a compact set and δK(x)=dist(x,∂K)δ_K(x)={\rm dist}(x,\partial K). We obtain optimal conditions in terms of φφ and ff for the existence of C2C^2 positive solutions. Our analysis emphasizes the role played by the geometry of the compact set KK.
