Global pointwise estimates of positive solutions to sublinear equations

We give bilateral pointwise estimates for positive solutions $u$ to the sublinear integral equation \[ u = \mathbf{G}(σu^q) + f \quad \textrm{in} \,\, Ω,\] for $0 < q < 1$, where $σ\ge 0$ is a measurable function, or a Radon measure, $f \ge 0$, and $\mathbf{G}$ is the integral operator associated with a positive kernel $G$ on $Ω\timesΩ$. Our main results, which include the existence criteria and uniqueness of solutions, hold for quasi-metric, or quasi-metrically modifiable kernels $G$. As a consequence, we obtain bilateral estimates, along with the existence and uniqueness, for positive solutions $u$, possibly unbounded, to sublinear elliptic equations involving the fractional Laplacian, \[ (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} u = σu^q + μ\quad \textrm{in} \,\, Ω, \qquad u=0 \, \, \textrm{in} \,\, Ω^c, \] where $0<q<1$, and $μ, σ\ge 0$ are measurable functions, or Radon measures, on a bounded uniform domain $Ω\subset \mathbf{R}^n$ for $0 < α\le 2$, or on the entire space $\mathbf{R}^n$, a ball or half-space, for $0 < α<n$.

Finite energy solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations with sub-natural growth terms

We study finite energy solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations of the type $$ -Δ_pu=σ\, u^q \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n,$$ where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian, $p>1$, and $σ$ is a nonnegative function (or measure) on $\mathbb{R}^n$, in the case $0<q < p-1$ ( below the "natural growth" rate $q=p-1$ ). We give an explicit necessary and sufficient condition on $σ$ which ensures that there exists a solution $u$ in the homogeneous Sobolev space $L_0^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and prove its uniqueness. Among our main tools are integral inequalities closely associated with this problem, and Wolff potential estimates used to obtain sharp bounds of solutions. More general quasilinear equations with the $\mathcal{A}$-Laplacian $ \text{div} \mathcal{A}(x,\nabla \cdot)$ in place of $Δ_p$ are considered as well.

Pointwise Bounds and Blow-up for Systems of Semilinear Elliptic Inequalities at an Isolated Singularity via Nonlinear Potential Estimates

We study the behavior near the origin of $C^2$ positive solutions $u(x)$ and $v(x)$ of the system $0\leq -Δu\leq f(v)$ $0\leq -Δv\leq g(u)$ in $B_1(0)\backslash\{0\}$ where $f,g:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$ are continuous functions. We provide optimal conditions on $f$ and $g$ at $\infty$ such that solutions of this system satisfy pointwise bounds near the origin. In dimension $n=2$ we show that this property holds if $\log^+ f$ or $\log^+g$ grow at most linearly at infinity. In dimension $n\geq 3$ and under the assumption $f(t)=O(t^λ)$, $g(t)=O(t^σ)$ as $t\to \infty$, ($λ, σ\geq 0$), we obtain a new critical curve that optimally describes the existence of such pointwise bounds. Our approach relies in part on sharp estimates of nonlinear potentials which appear naturally in this context.

Existence and regularity of positive solutions to elliptic equations of Schrödinger type

We prove the existence of positive solutions with optimal local regularity to homogeneous elliptic equations of Schrödinger type, under only a form boundedness assumption on $σ\in D'(Ω)$ and ellipticity assumption on $\mathcal{A}\in L^\infty(Ω)^{n\times n}$, for an arbitrary open set $Ω\subseteq \mathbf{R}^n$. We demonstrate that there is a two way correspondence between the form boundedness and the existence of positive solutions to this equation, as well as weak solutions to certain elliptic equations with quadratic nonlinearity in the gradient. As a consequence, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for both the form-boundedness (with a sharp upper form bound) and the positivity of the quadratic form of the Schrödinger type operator with arbitrary distributional potential $σ\in D'(Ω)$, and give examples clarifying the relationship between these two properties.

Quasilinear elliptic equations and weighted Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities with distributional weights

We introduce a class of weak solutions to the quasilinear equation $-Δ_p u = σ|u|^{p-2}u$ in an open set $Ω\subset\mathbf{R}^n$. Here $p>1$, and $Δ_p u$ is the $p$-Laplacian operator. Our notion of solution is tailored to general distributional coefficients $σ$ satisfying a certain weighted Sobolev-Poincare inequality. We also study weak solutions of the closely related equation $-Δ_p v = (p-1)|\nabla v|^p + σ$, under the same conditions on $σ$. Our results for this latter equation will allow us to characterize the class of distributions $σ$ which satisfy the Sobolev-Poincare inequality, thereby extending earlier results on the form boundedness problem for the Schrödinger operator to $p\neq 2$.

Quasilinear equations with source terms on Carnot groups

In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to quasilinear equations of Lane--Emden type with measure data on a Carnot group $\mathbb G$ of arbitrary step. The quasilinear part involves operators of the $p$-Laplacian type $Δ_{\mathbb G,\,p}\,$, $1<p<\infty$. These results are based on new a priori estimates of solutions in terms of nonlinear potentials of Th. Wolff's type. As a consequence, we characterize completely removable singularities, and prove a Liouville type theorem for supersolutions of quasilinear equations with source terms which has been known only for equations involving the sub-Laplacian ($p=2$) on the Heisenberg group.

Radial fractional Laplace operators and Hessian inequalities

In this paper we deduce a formula for the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^{s}$ on radially symmetric functions useful for some applications. We give a criterion of subharmonicity associated with $(-Δ)^{s}$, and apply it to a problem related to the Hessian inequality of Sobolev type: $$\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|(-Δ)^{\frac{k}{k+1}} u|^{k+1} dx \le C \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} - u \, F_k[u] \, dx, $$ where $F_k$ is the $k$-Hessian operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $1\le k < \frac{n}{2}$, under some restrictions on a $k$-convex function $u$. In particular, we show that the class of $u$ for which the above inequality was established in \cite{FFV} contains the extremal functions for the Hessian Sobolev inequality of X.-J. Wang \cite{W1}. This is proved using logarithmic convexity of the Gaussian ratio of hypergeometric functions which might be of independent interest.
