What is $Δm^2_{ee}$ ?

The current short baseline reactor experiments, Daya Bay and RENO (Double Chooz) have measured (or are capable of measuring) an effective $Δm^2$ associated with the atmospheric oscillation scale of 0.5 km/MeV in electron anti-neutrino disappearance. In this paper, I compare and contrast the different definitions of such an effective $Δm^2$ and argue that the simple, L/E independent, definition given by $Δm^2_{ee} \equiv \cos^2 θ_{12} Δm^2_{31}+ \sin^2 θ_{12} Δm^2_{32}$, i.e. "the $ν_e$ weighted average of $Δm^2_{31}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$," is superior to all other definitions and is useful for both short baseline experiments mentioned above and for the future medium baseline experiments JUNO and RENO 50.

Unitarity and the three flavour neutrino mixing matrix

Unitarity is a fundamental property of any theory required to ensure we work in a theoretically consistent framework. In comparison with the quark sector, experimental tests of unitarity for the 3x3 neutrino mixing matrix are considerably weaker. It must be remembered that the vast majority of our information on the neutrino mixing angles originates from $\overlineν_e$ and $ν_μ$ disappearance experiments, with the assumption of unitarity being invoked to constrain the remaining elements. New physics can invalidate this assumption for the 3x3 subset and thus modify our precision measurements. We perform a reanalysis to see how global knowledge is altered when one refits oscillation results without assuming unitarity, and present $3 σ$ ranges for allowed $U_\text{PMNS}$ elements consistent with all observed phenomena. We calculate the bounds on the closure of the six neutrino unitarity triangles, with the closure of the $ν_e ν_μ$ triangle being constrained to be $\leq$ 0.03, while the remaining triangles are significantly less constrained to be $\leq$ 0.1 - 0.2. Similarly for the row and column normalization, we find their deviation from unity is constrained to be $\leq$ 0.2 - 0.4, for four out of six such normalisations, while for the $ν_μ$ and $ν_e$ row normalisation the deviations are constrained to be $\leq$ 0.07, all at the $3σ$ CL. We emphasise that there is significant room for new low energy physics, especially in the $ν_τ$ sector which very few current experiments constrain directly.

Determination of the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy via the Phase of the Disappearance Oscillation Probability with a Monochromatic \barν_e Source

The neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined, in principle, by measuring a phase in the disappearance oscillation probability in vacuum, without relying on the matter effect, using a single channel. This phase is not the same for the normal and inverted neutrino mass spectra. In this paper, we give a complete description and physics understanding of the method. The key feature of the method is to detect advancement (normal) or retardation (inverted) of the phase of the atmospheric-scale oscillation relative to the solar-scale oscillation. We then show that this method can be realized with the recently proposed resonant $\barν_{e}$ absorption reaction enhanced by Mössbauer effect. The unique feature of this setup is the ultra-monochromaticity of the observed \barν_{e}'s. Because of this feature the phase advancement or retardation of atmospheric-scale neutrino oscillation is detectable after 20 or more oscillations if the source and the target are made sufficiently compact in size. A quantitative estimate of the sensitivity to mass hierarchy resolution is given. We have also examined how a possible continuation of such experiment can be carried out in order also to achieve high precision (few %) determination of the solar-scale oscillation parameters Δm^2_{21} and θ_{12}.

Deconstructing Angular Correlations in ZH, ZZ, and WW Production at LEP2

We apply a generalized spin-basis analysis to associated Higgs production and gauge boson pair production at LEP. This framework allows us to identify a choice of spin axes for the processes e+ e- --> ZH,ZZ which leads to strikingly different correlations among the decay products, even well above threshold. This spin basis optimizes the difference in the angular correlations for these two processes. In contrast, the same distributions display little contrast when the helicity basis is used. We also apply this technique to the case of W boson pair production.

QCD Corrections to Spin Correlations in Top Quark Production at Lepton Colliders

Spin correlations, using a generic spin basis, are investigated to leading order in QCD for top quark production at lepton colliders. Even though, these radiative corrections induce an anomalous gamma/Z magnetic moment for the top quarks and allow for single, real gluon emission, their effects on the top quark spin orientation are very small. The final results are that the top (or anti-top) quarks are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized lepton collisions even after including the O(alpha_{s}) QCD corrections.

Improved Spin Basis for Angular Correlation Studies in Single Top Quark Production at the Tevatron

We show in single top quark production that the spin of the top quark is correlated with the direction of the d-type quark in the event. For single top production in the W* channel, the d-type quark comes dominantly from the antiproton at the Tevatron, whereas for the W-gluon fusion channel the spectator jet is the d-type quark the majority of the time at this machine. Our results are that 98% of the top quarks from the W* process have their spins in the antiproton direction, and 96% of the top quarks in the W-gluon fusion process have their spins in the spectator jet direction. We also compare with the more traditional, but less effective, helicity basis. The direction of the top quark spin is reflected in angular correlations in its decay products.

Maximizing Spin Correlations in Top Quark Pair Production at the Tevatron

A comparison is made between the off-diagonal and helicity spin bases for top quark pair production at the FNAL Tevatron. In the off-diagonal basis, 92% of the top quark pairs are in the spin configuration up-down plus down-up, whereas in the helicity basis only 70% are left-right plus right-left. The off-diagonal basis maximizes the spin asymmetry and hence the measured angular correlations between the decay products, which are more than twice as big in this basis as compared to the helicity basis. In addition, for the process q qbar --> t tbar, we give a very simple analytic expression for the matrix element squared which includes all spin correlations between the production and subsequent decay of the top quarks.

Spin Correlations in Top-Quark Pair Production at $e^+e^-$ Colliders

We show that top-quark pairs are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized $e^+e^-$ colliders at all energies above the threshold region. Since the directions of the electroweak decay products of polarized top-quarks are strongly correlated to the top-quark spin axis, this unique spin configuration leads to a distinctive topology for top-quark pair events which can be used to constrain anomalous couplings to the top-quark. A significant interference effect between the {\it longitudinal} and {\it transverse} W-bosons in the decay of polarized top-quarks is also discussed. These results are obtained at leading order in perturbation theory but radiative corrections are expected to be small.

Angular Correlations in Top Quark Pair Production and Decay at Hadron Colliders

We show how to observe sizable angular correlations between the decay products of the top quark and those of the anti-top quark in top quark pair production and decay at hadron colliders. These correlations result from the large asymmetry in the rate for producing like-spin versus unlike-spin top quark pairs provided the appropriate spin axes are used. The effects of new physics at production or decay on these correlations are briefly discussed.
