Spin Correlation Effects in Top Quark Pair Production at the LHC

At a 14 TeV proton-proton collider, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we show that top quark pair production is dominated at low invariant mass by the fusion of two like-helicity gluons, producing top quark pairs in the left-left or right-right helicity configurations. Whereas, at higher invariant mass the production is dominated by the fusion of unlike-helicity gluons, producing top quark pairs in the up-down or down-up off-diagonal configurations, identical to top quark pair production via quark-antiquark annihilation. We study in detail the low invariant mass region, and show that the spin correlations can be easily observed in this region by looking at the distribution of the difference in the azimuthal angles, Delta-phi, of the dileptons decay products of the top quarks in the laboratory frame. Due to the large cross section for top pair production at the LHC, even with a cut requiring that the invariant mass of the top quark pair be less than 400 GeV, the approximate yield would be 10^4 di-lepton (e, mu) events per fb^{-1} before detector efficiencies are applied. Therefore, there is ample statistics to form the Delta-phi distribution of the dilepton events, even with the invariant mass restriction. We also discuss possibilities for observing these spin correlations in the lepton plus jets channel.

Spin correlations: Tevatron vs. LHC

We compare theoretical expectations for the observation of spin correlations in top quark pair production and decay at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, we note that the differing top quark pair production mechanisms in the two environments test different aspects of the Standard Model and require different strategies to observe the correlations. At the Tevatron, production is dominated by q qbar --> t tbar and the strategy is to construct a double-decay angle distribution where one decay angle is measured in the t rest frame and the other in the tbar rest frame. The dominant process at the LHC is gg --> t tbar, with a rich spin structure that allows for a second option in observing spin correlations. Here the strategy is to select events where the t tbar pair is produced at relatively low velocity in the zero momentum frame (ZMF). For these events, there are strong azimuthal correlations between t and tbar decay products present. This measurement enjoys the advantage that it can be carried out in the laboratory frame.

Color Neutrality and the Gluon Distribution in a Very Large Nucleus

We improve the McLerran-Venugopalan model for the gluon distribution functions in very large nuclei by imposing the condition that the nucleons should be color neutral. We find that enforcing color neutrality cures the infrared divergences in the transverse coordinates which are present in the McLerran-Venugopalan model. Since we obtain well-defined expressions for the distribution functions, we are able to draw unambiguous conclusions about various features of the model. In particular, we show that the gluon distribution functions in the absence of quantum corrections behave as 1/x to all orders in the coupling constant. Furthermore, our distribution functions exhibit saturation at small transverse momenta. The normalization of the distribution function we obtain is not arbitrary but specified in terms of the nucleon structure. We derive a sum rule for the integral of the gluon distribution function over transverse momenta, and show that the non-Abelian contributions serve only to modify the shape of the transverse momentum distribution. We obtain a relatively simple expression for the mean value of the transverse momentum-squared. The connection between the McLerran-Venugopalan model and the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation is discussed quantitatively. Finally, we illustrate our results in terms of a simple nuclear model due to Kovchegov.

Deconstructing Angular Correlations in ZH, ZZ, and WW Production at LEP2

We apply a generalized spin-basis analysis to associated Higgs production and gauge boson pair production at LEP. This framework allows us to identify a choice of spin axes for the processes e+ e- --> ZH,ZZ which leads to strikingly different correlations among the decay products, even well above threshold. This spin basis optimizes the difference in the angular correlations for these two processes. In contrast, the same distributions display little contrast when the helicity basis is used. We also apply this technique to the case of W boson pair production.

Improved Spin Basis for Angular Correlation Studies in Single Top Quark Production at the Tevatron

We show in single top quark production that the spin of the top quark is correlated with the direction of the d-type quark in the event. For single top production in the W* channel, the d-type quark comes dominantly from the antiproton at the Tevatron, whereas for the W-gluon fusion channel the spectator jet is the d-type quark the majority of the time at this machine. Our results are that 98% of the top quarks from the W* process have their spins in the antiproton direction, and 96% of the top quarks in the W-gluon fusion process have their spins in the spectator jet direction. We also compare with the more traditional, but less effective, helicity basis. The direction of the top quark spin is reflected in angular correlations in its decay products.

Maximizing Spin Correlations in Top Quark Pair Production at the Tevatron

A comparison is made between the off-diagonal and helicity spin bases for top quark pair production at the FNAL Tevatron. In the off-diagonal basis, 92% of the top quark pairs are in the spin configuration up-down plus down-up, whereas in the helicity basis only 70% are left-right plus right-left. The off-diagonal basis maximizes the spin asymmetry and hence the measured angular correlations between the decay products, which are more than twice as big in this basis as compared to the helicity basis. In addition, for the process q qbar --> t tbar, we give a very simple analytic expression for the matrix element squared which includes all spin correlations between the production and subsequent decay of the top quarks.

Angular Correlations in Top Quark Pair Production and Decay at Hadron Colliders

We show how to observe sizable angular correlations between the decay products of the top quark and those of the anti-top quark in top quark pair production and decay at hadron colliders. These correlations result from the large asymmetry in the rate for producing like-spin versus unlike-spin top quark pairs provided the appropriate spin axes are used. The effects of new physics at production or decay on these correlations are briefly discussed.
