Partial-wave and helicity operators for the scattering of two hadrons in lattice QCD

Partial-wave operators for lattice QCD are developed in order to facilitate the identification of the spins of two-hadron scattering states corresponding to zero total momentum. Taking the periodic boundary conditions for lattice states into account, orthogonal sets of partial-wave operators for orbital angular momentum are identified. When combined with the intrinsic spins of the hadrons, orthogonal sets of parent operators for total angular momentum $J$ and projection $M$ are obtained. The parent operators are subduced to irreducible representations of the octahedral group in order to obtain descendant operators for use in lattice calculations. The descendant operators retain orthogonality with respect to $J$. The spin of a state can be identified by the spin of parent operators that dominate creation of the state. For nonzero total momentum, operators are developed for a range of helicities and they are subduced to irreducible representations corresponding to the different directions of total momentum. Sets of operators that include a sufficient range of helicities allow identification of spin $J$ when a state couples to operators with helicities less than or equal to $J$, but not to operators with higher helicities.

The Flavor Structure of the Excited Baryon Spectra from Lattice QCD

Excited state spectra are calculated using lattice QCD for baryons that can be formed from $u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks, namely the $N$, $Δ$, $Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ families of baryons. Baryonic operators are constructed from continuum operators that transform as irreducible representations of SU(3)$_F$ symmetry for flavor, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) symmetry for orbital angular momenta. Covariant derivatives are used to realize orbital angular momenta. Using the operators, we calculate matrices of correlation functions in order to extract excited states. The resulting lattice spectra have bands of baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to $J=7/2$. Each state can be assigned a dominant flavor symmetry and the counting of states of each flavor and spin reflects $SU(6) \times O(3)$ symmetry for the lowest negative-parity and positive-parity bands. States with strong hybrid content are identified through the dominance of chromo-magnetic operators.

Excited state baryon spectroscopy from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the Nucleon and Delta excited state spectrum on dynamical anisotropic clover lattices. A method for operator construction is introduced that allows for the reliable identification of the continuum spins of baryon states, overcoming the reduced symmetry of the cubic lattice. Using this method, we are able to determine a spectrum of single-particle states for spins up to and including J = 7/2, of both parities, the first time this has been achieved in a lattice calculation. We find a spectrum of states identifiable as admixtures of SU(6) x O(3) representations and a counting of levels that is consistent with the non-relativistic $qqq$ constituent quark model. This dense spectrum is incompatible with quark-diquark model solutions to the "missing resonance problem" and shows no signs of parity doubling of states.

Nucleon, Delta and Omega excited state spectra at three pion mass values

The energies of the excited states of the Nucleon, Delta and Omega are computed in lattice QCD, using two light quarks and one strange quark on anisotropic lattices. The calculations are performed at three values of the pion mass: 392(4), 438(3) and 521(3) MeV. We employ the variational method with a basis of about ten interpolating operators enabling six energies to be distinguished clearly in each irreducible representation of the octahedral group. We compare our calculations of nucleon excited states with the low-lying experimental spectrum. There is reasonable agreement for the pattern of states.

Cascade Baryon Spectrum from Lattice QCD

A comprehensive study of the cascade baryon spectrum using lattice QCD affords the prospect of predicting the masses of states not yet discovered experimentally, and determining the spin and parity of those states for which the quantum numbers are not yet known. The study of the cascades, containing two strange quarks, is particularly attractive for lattice QCD in that the chiral effects are reduced compared to states composed only of u/d quarks, and the states are typically narrow. We report preliminary results for the cascade spectrum obtained by using anisotropic N_f = 2 Wilson lattices with temporal lattice spacing inverse 5.56 GeV.

Excited nucleon spectrum with two flavors of dynamical fermions

We compute the spectrum of excited nucleons using the anisotropic Wilson lattice with two flavors of dynamical fermions. Using optimized sets of operators which transform irreducibly under the octahedral group, matrices of correlation functions are computed. We apply the variational method to these matrices to extract excited energy eigenstates. We obtain several states for each irrep and identify the continuum spin for the lowest-lying states, including a $J^P={5/2}^-$ state.

Hadronic Resonances from Lattice QCD

The determination of the pattern of hadronic resonances as predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics requires the use of non-perturbative techniques. Lattice QCD has emerged as the dominant tool for such calculations, and has produced many QCD predictions which can be directly compared to experiment. The concepts underlying lattice QCD are outlined, methods for calculating excited states are discussed, and results from an exploratory Nucleon and Delta baryon spectrum study are presented.

Results and Frontiers in Lattice Baryon Spectroscopy

The Lattice Hadron Physics Collaboration (LHPC) baryon spectroscopy effort is reviewed. To date the LHPC has performed exploratory Lattice QCD calculations of the low-lying spectrum of Nucleon and Delta baryons. These calculations demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by obtaining the masses of an unprecedented number of excited states with definite quantum numbers. Future work of the project is outlined.

Clebsch-Gordan Construction of Lattice Interpolating Fields for Excited Baryons

Large sets of baryon interpolating field operators are developed for use in lattice QCD studies of baryons with zero momentum. Operators are classified according to the double-valued irreducible representations of the octahedral group. At first, three-quark smeared, local operators are constructed for each isospin and strangeness and they are classified according to their symmetry with respect to exchange of Dirac indices. Nonlocal baryon operators are formulated in a second step as direct products of the spinor structures of smeared, local operators together with gauge-covariant lattice displacements of one or more of the smeared quark fields. Linear combinations of direct products of spinorial and spatial irreducible representations are then formed with appropriate Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the octahedral group. The construction attempts to maintain maximal overlap with the continuum SU(2) group in order to provide a physically interpretable basis. Nonlocal operators provide direct couplings to states that have nonzero orbital angular momentum.
