Substructure of Multiquark Hadrons (Snowmass 2021 White Paper)

In recent years there has been a rapidly growing body of experimental evidence for existence of exotic, multiquark hadrons, i.e. mesons which contain additional quarks, beyond the usual quark-antiquark pair and baryons which consist of more than three quarks. In all cases with robust evidence they contain at least one heavy quark Q=c or b, the majority including two heavy quarks. Two key theoretical questions have been triggered by these discoveries: (a) how are quarks organized inside these multiquark states -- as compact objects with all quarks within one confinement volume, interacting via color forces, perhaps with an important role played by diquarks, or as deuteron-like hadronic molecules, bound by light-meson exchange? (b) what other multiquark states should we expect? The two questions are tightly intertwined. Each of the interpretations provides a natural explanation of parts of the data, but neither explains all of the data. It is quite possible that both kinds of structures appear in Nature. It may also be the case that certain states are superpositions of the compact and molecular configurations. This Whitepaper brings together contributions from many leading practitioners in the field, representing a wide spectrum of theoretical interpretations. We discuss the importance of future experimental and phenomenological work, which will lead to better understandingof multiquark phenomena in QCD.

An empirical model on the dynamics of Covid-19 spread in human population

We propose a mathematical model to analyze the time evolution of the total number of infected population with Covid-19 disease at a region in the ongoing pandemic. Using the available data of Covid-19 infected population on various countries we formulate a model which can successfully track the time evolution from early days to the saturation period in a given wave of this infectious disease. It involves a set of effective parameters which can be extracted from the available data. Using those parameters the future trajectories of the disease spread can also be projected. A set of differential equations is also proposed whose solutions are these time evolution trajectories. Using such a formalism we project the future time evolution trajectories of infection spread for a number of countries where the Covid-19 infection is still rapidly rising.

Roper State from Overlap Fermions

The Roper state is extracted with valence overlap fermions on a $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion lattice (spacing $a = 0.114$ fm and $m_π = 330$ MeV) using both the Sequential Empirical Bayes (SEB) method and the variational method. The results are consistent, provided that a large smearing-size interpolation operator is included in the variational calculation to have better overlap with the lowest radial excitation. Similar calculations carried out for an anisotropic clover lattice with similar parameters find the Roper $\approx 280$ MeV higher than that of the overlap fermion. The fact that the prediction of the Roper state by overlap fermions is consistently lower than those of clover fermions, chirally improved fermions, and twisted-mass fermions over a wide range of pion masses has been dubbed a "Roper puzzle." To understand the origin of this difference, we study the hairpin $Z$-diagram in the isovector scalar meson ($a_0$) correlator in the quenched approximation. Comparing the $a_0$ correlators for clover and overlap fermions, at a pion mass of 290 MeV, we find that the spectral weight of the ghost state with clover fermions is smaller than that of the overlap at $a = 0.12$ fm and $0.09$ fm, whereas the whole $a_0$ correlators of clover and overlap at $a = 0.06$ fm coincide within errors. This suggests that chiral symmetry is restored for clover at $a \le 0.06$ fm and that the Roper should come down at and below this $a$. We conclude that this work supports a resolution of the "Roper puzzle" due to $Z$-graph type chiral dynamics. This entails coupling to higher components in the Fock space (e.g. $Nπ$, $Nππ$ states) to induce the effective flavor-spin interaction between quarks as prescribed in the chiral quark model, resulting in the parity-reversal pattern as observed in the experimental excited states of $N, Δ$ and $Λ$.

Charmed-Bottom Mesons from Lattice QCD

We present ground state spectra of mesons containing a charm and a bottom quark. For the charm quark we use overlap valence quarks while a non-relativistic formulation is utilized for the bottom quark on a background of 2+1+1 flavors HISQ gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. The hyperfine splitting between $1S$ states of $B_c$ mesons is found to be $56^{+4}_{-3}$ MeV. We also study the baryons containing only charm and bottom quarks and predict their ground state masses. Results are obtained at three lattice spacings.

Spectroscopy of doubly-charmed baryons from lattice QCD

We present the ground and excited state spectra of doubly charmed baryons from lattice QCD with dynamical quark fields. Calculations are performed on anisotropic lattices of size 16^3 X 128, with inverse spacing in temporal direction 1/a_t = 5.67(4) GeV and with a pion mass of about 390 MeV. A large set of baryonic operators that respect the symmetries of the lattice yet which retain a memory of their continuum analogues are used. These operators transform as irreducible representations of SU(3) symmetry for flavor, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) for spatial symmetry. The distillation method is utilized to generate baryon correlation functions which are analysed using the variational fitting method to extract excited states. The lattice spectra obtained have baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to 7/2 and the pattern of low lying states does not support the diquark picture for doubly charmed baryons. On the contrary the calculated spectra are remarkably similar to the expectations from models with an SU(6)X O(3) symmetry. Various spin dependent energy splittings between the extracted states are also evaluated.

Excited-state spectroscopy of singly, doubly and triply-charmed baryons from lattice QCD

We present the ground and excited state spectra of singly, doubly and triply-charmed baryons by using dynamical lattice QCD. A large set of baryonic operators that respect the symmetries of the lattice and are obtained after subduction from their continuum analogues are utilized. These operators transform as irreducible representations of SU(3)$_F$ symmetry for flavour, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) symmetry for orbital angular momenta. Using novel computational techniques correlation functions of these operators are generated and the variational method is exploited to extract excited states. The lattice spectra that we obtain have baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to 7/2 and the low lying states remarkably resemble the expectations of quantum numbers from SU(6)$\otimes$O(3) symmetry.

Light Glueball masses using the Multilevel Algorithm

Following the multilevel scheme we present an error reduction algorithm for extracting glueball masses from monte-carlo simulations of pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We look at the two lightest states viz. the $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$. Our method involves looking at correlations between large Wilson loops and does not require any smearing of links. The error bars we obtain are at the moment comparable to those obtained using smeared operators. We also present a comparison of our method with the naive method.

Noise reduction algorithm for Glueball correlators

We present an error reduction method for obtaining glueball correlators from monte carlo simulations of SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We explore the scalar and tensor channels at three different lattice spacings. Using this method we can follow glueball correlators to temporal separations even up to 1 fermi. We estimate the improvement over the naive method and compare our results with existing computations.

The spectrum of excitations of triply-charmed baryons is computed using lattice QCD including dynamical light quark fields. Calculations are performed on anisotropic lattices with temporal and spatial spacings a_t = 0.0351(2) and a_s ~ 0.12 fm respectively and with pion mass of about 390 MeV. The spectrum obtained has baryonic states with well-defined total spin up to 7/2 and the low-lying states closely resemble the expectation from models with an SU(6)X O(3) symmetry. Energy splittings between extracted states, including those due to spin-orbit coupling in the heavy quark limit are computed and compared against data at other quark masses.

The Flavor Structure of the Excited Baryon Spectra from Lattice QCD

Excited state spectra are calculated using lattice QCD for baryons that can be formed from $u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks, namely the $N$, $Δ$, $Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ families of baryons. Baryonic operators are constructed from continuum operators that transform as irreducible representations of SU(3)$_F$ symmetry for flavor, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) symmetry for orbital angular momenta. Covariant derivatives are used to realize orbital angular momenta. Using the operators, we calculate matrices of correlation functions in order to extract excited states. The resulting lattice spectra have bands of baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to $J=7/2$. Each state can be assigned a dominant flavor symmetry and the counting of states of each flavor and spin reflects $SU(6) \times O(3)$ symmetry for the lowest negative-parity and positive-parity bands. States with strong hybrid content are identified through the dominance of chromo-magnetic operators.

Heavy-Baryon Spectroscopy from Lattice QCD

We use a four-dimensional lattice calculation of the full-QCD (quantum chromodynamics, the non-abliean gauge theory of the strong interactions of quarks and gluons) path integrals needed to determine the masses of the charmed and bottom baryons. In the charm sector, our results are in good agreement with experiment within our systematics, except for the spin-1/2 $Ξ_{cc}$, for which we found the isospin-averaged mass to be $Ξ_{cc}$ to be $3665\pm17\pm14^{+0}_{-78}$ MeV. We predict the mass of the (isospin-averaged) spin-1/2 $Ω_{cc}$ to be $3763\pm19\pm26^{+13}_{-79}$ {MeV}. In the bottom sector, our results are also in agreement with experimental observations and other lattice calculations within our statistical and systematic errors. In particular, we find the mass of the $Ω_b$ to be consistent with the recent CDF measurement. We also predict the mass for the as yet unobserved $Ξ^\prime_b$ to be 5955(27) MeV.

Nucleon strangeness form factors and moments of PDF

The calculation of the nucleon strangeness form factors from N_f=2+1 clover fermion lattice QCD is presented. Disconnected insertions are evaluated using the Z(4) stochastic method, along with unbiased subtractions from the hopping parameter expansion. We find that increasing the number of nucleon sources for each configuration improves the signal significantly. We obtain G_M^s(0) = -0.017(25)(07), which is consistent with experimental values, and has an order of magnitude smaller error. Preliminary results for the strangeness contribution to the second moment of the parton distribution function are also presented.

Excited-Nucleon Spectroscopy with 2+1 Fermion Flavors

We present progress made by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration (HSC) in determining the tower of excited nucleon states using 2+1-flavor anisotropic clover lattices. The HSC has been investigating interpolating operators projected into irreducible representations of the cubic group in order to better calculate two-point correlators for nucleon spectroscopy; results are published for quenched and 2-flavor anisotropic Wilson lattices. In this work, we present the latest results using a new technique, distillation, which allows us to reach higher statistics than before. Future directions will be outlined at the end.

We present the N_f=2+1 clover fermion lattice QCD calculation of the nucleon strangeness form factors. We evaluate disconnected insertions using the Z(4) stochastic method, along with unbiased subtractions from the hopping parameter expansion. We find that increasing the number of nucleon sources for each configuration improves the signal significantly. We obtain G_M^s(0) = -0.017(25)(07), where the first error is statistical, and the second is the uncertainties in Q^2 and chiral extrapolations. This is consistent with experimental values, and has an order of magnitude smaller error.

The calculation of nucleon strangeness form factors from N_f=2+1 clover fermion lattice QCD

We study the strangeness electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon from the N_f=2+1 clover fermion lattice QCD calculation. The disconnected insertions are evaluated using the Z(4) stochastic method, along with unbiased subtractions from the hopping parameter expansion. In addition to increasing the number of Z(4) noises, we find that increasing the number of nucleon sources for each configuration improves the signal significantly. We obtain G_M^s(0) = -0.017(25)(07), where the first error is statistical, and the second is the uncertainties in Q^2 and chiral extrapolations. This is consistent with experimental values, and has an order of magnitude smaller error. We also study the strangeness second moment of the partion distribution function of the nucleon, <x^2>_{s-\bar{s}}.

Cascade Baryon Spectrum from Lattice QCD

A comprehensive study of the cascade baryon spectrum using lattice QCD affords the prospect of predicting the masses of states not yet discovered experimentally, and determining the spin and parity of those states for which the quantum numbers are not yet known. The study of the cascades, containing two strange quarks, is particularly attractive for lattice QCD in that the chiral effects are reduced compared to states composed only of u/d quarks, and the states are typically narrow. We report preliminary results for the cascade spectrum obtained by using anisotropic N_f = 2 Wilson lattices with temporal lattice spacing inverse 5.56 GeV.

Excited nucleon spectrum with two flavors of dynamical fermions

We compute the spectrum of excited nucleons using the anisotropic Wilson lattice with two flavors of dynamical fermions. Using optimized sets of operators which transform irreducibly under the octahedral group, matrices of correlation functions are computed. We apply the variational method to these matrices to extract excited energy eigenstates. We obtain several states for each irrep and identify the continuum spin for the lowest-lying states, including a $J^P={5/2}^-$ state.

Light scalar mesons in 2+1 flavor full QCD

We study the a_0 and K_0^* light scalar mesons in 2+1 flavor full QCD. Particular attention is paid to fitting excited states, with an eye toward determining whether scattering states are revealed. An ultimate goal will be to see how dynamical quarks affect the picture outlined with an earlier quenched study using overlap fermions, namely, that it is the a_0(1450), not the a_0(980), which is the lowest $\bar{q}q$ isovector scalar state.

Strangeness and glue in the nucleon from lattice QCD

We study the strangeness contribution to nucleon matrix elements using Nf=2+1 dynamical clover fermion configurations generated by the CP-PACS/JLQCD collaboration. In order to evaluate the disconnected insertion (DI), we use the Z(4) stochastic method, along with unbiased subtraction from the hopping parameter expansion which reduces the off-diagonal noises in the stochastic method. Furthermore, we find that using many nucleon sources for each configuration is effective in improving the signal. Our results for the quark contribution to the first moment <x>_q in the DI, and the strangeness magnetic moment show that the statistical errors are under control with these techniques. We also study the gluonic contribution to the nucleon using the overlap operator to construct the gauge field tensor, F_{mu,nu}. The application to the calculation of first moment, <x>_G, gives a good signal in quenched lattice QCD.

Hadronic Resonances from Lattice QCD

The determination of the pattern of hadronic resonances as predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics requires the use of non-perturbative techniques. Lattice QCD has emerged as the dominant tool for such calculations, and has produced many QCD predictions which can be directly compared to experiment. The concepts underlying lattice QCD are outlined, methods for calculating excited states are discussed, and results from an exploratory Nucleon and Delta baryon spectrum study are presented.

Exotic and higher spin mesons in the charmonium

Exotic and higher spin (> 1) mesons are still not throughly investigated in lattice QCD. Using a set of derivative based operators we report our exploratory study of these mesons in charmonium region. We use a 12^3 X 48 anisotropic (xi = 3) clover lattice with inverse temporal lattice spacing a^-1 = 6.05 GeV. Techniques developed in this exploratory study will be utilized in our future comprehensive study of light hybrid mesons that are to be explored in the 12 GeV GlueX experiment at Jefferson Laboratory.

Locality and Scaling of Quenched Overlap Fermions

The overlap fermion offers the tremendous advantage of exact chiral symmetry on the lattice, but is numerically intensive. This can be made affordable while still providing large lattice volumes, by using coarse lattice spacing, given that good scaling and localization properties are established. Here, using overlap fermions on quenched Iwasaki gauge configurations, we demonstrate directly that the overlap Dirac operator's range is comfortably small in lattice units for each of the lattice spacings 0.20 fm, 0.17 fm, and 0.13 fm (and scales to zero in physical units in the continuum limit). In particular, our direct results contradict recent speculation that an inverse lattice spacing of $1 {\rm GeV}$ is too low to have satisfactory localization. Furthermore, hadronic masses (available on the two coarser lattices) scale very well.

Improved Measure of Local Chirality

It is popular to probe the structure of the QCD vacuum indirectly by studying individual fermion eigenmodes, because this provides a natural way to filter out UV fluctuations. The double-peaking in the distribution of the local chiral orientation parameter (X) has been offered as evidence, by some, in support of a particular model of the vacuum. Here we caution that the X-distribution peaking varies significantly with various versions of the definition of X. Furthermore, each distribution varies little from that resulting from a random reshuffling of the left-handed (and independently the right-handed) fields, which destroys any QCD-induced left-right correlation; that is, the double-peaking is mostly a phase-space effect. We propose a new universal definition of the X parameter whose distribution is uniform for randomly reshuffled fields. Any deviations from uniformity for actual data can then be directly attributable to QCD-induced dynamics. We find that the familiar double peak disappears.

Charmed and Bottom Baryons from Lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of charmed and bottom baryons has been computed on anisotropic lattices using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Masses are extracted by using mass splittings which are more accurate than masses obtained directly by using the nonrelativistic mass-energy relation. Of particular interest are the mass splittings between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 heavy baryons, and we find that these color hyperfine effects are not suppressed in the baryon sector although they are known to be suppressed in the meson sector. Results are compared with those obtained in a previous NRQCD calculation and with those obtained from a Dirac-Wilson action of the D234 type.

Charmed baryons in lattice QCD

Masses of singly and doubly charmed baryons are calculated in quenched lattice QCD using an improved action of the D234 type on an anisotropic lattice. The mass differences between spin 3/2 and spin 1/2 baryon states are calculated and compared to mass differences between vector and pseudoscalar mesons. The suppression of spin splittings in mesons containing heavy quarks, characteristic of quenched QCD simulations, is not observed in the baryon sector. The mass dependence of color hyperfine effects is discussed within the context of the quark model and heavy quark effective theory.

Proton Spin Content From Lattice QCD

We calculate the form factor of the quark energy momentum tensor and thereby extract the quark orbital angular momentum of the nucleon. The calculation is done on a quenched $16^3 \times 24$ lattice at $β= 6.0$ and with Wilson fermions at $κ$ = 0.148, 0.152, 0.154 and 0.155. We calculate the disconnected insertion stochastically which employs the $Z_2$ noise with an unbiased subtraction. This proves to be an efficient method of reduce the error from the noise. We find that the total quark contribution to the proton spin is $0.29 \pm 0.07$. From this we deduce that the quark orbital angular momentum is $0.17 \pm 0.08$ and predict the gluon spin to be $0.21 \pm 0.07$, i.e. about 40% of the proton spin is due to the glue.
