Hadron Spectroscopy with Lattice QCD

The status and prospects for investigations of exotic and conventional hadrons with lattice QCD are discussed. The majority of hadrons decay strongly via one or multiple decay-channels, including most of the experimentally discovered exotic hadrons. Despite this difficult challenge, the properties of several hadronic resonances have been determined within lattice QCD. To further discern the spectroscopic properties of various hadrons and to help resolve their nature we present our suggestions for future analytic and lattice studies.

The energy-dependent $π^+ π^+ π^+$ scattering amplitude from QCD

Focusing on three-pion states with maximal isospin ($π^+π^+π^+$), we present the first non-perturbative determination of an energy-dependent three-hadron scattering amplitude from first-principles QCD. The calculation combines finite-volume three-hadron energies, extracted using numerical lattice QCD, with a relativistic finite-volume formalism, required to interpret the results. To fully implement the latter, we also solve integral equations that relate an intermediate three-body K matrix to the physical three-hadron scattering amplitude. The resulting amplitude shows rich analytic structure and a complicated dependence on the two-pion invariant masses, represented here via Dalitz-like plots of the scattering rate.

Distillation at High-Momentum

Extraction of hadronic observables at finite-momenta from Lattice QCD (LQCD) is constrained by the well-known signal-to-noise problems afflicting all such LQCD calculations. Traditional quark smearing algorithms are commonly used tools to improve the statistical quality of hadronic $n$-point functions, provided operator momenta are small. The momentum smearing algorithm of Bali et al. extends the range of momenta that are cleanly accessible, and has facilitated countless novel lattice calculations. Momentum smearing has, however, not been explicitly demonstrated within the framework of distillation. In this work we extend the momentum-smearing idea, by exploring a few modifications to the distillation framework. Together with enhanced time slice sampling and expanded operator bases engendered by distillation, we find ground-state nucleon energies can be extracted reliably for $\left|\vec{p}\right|\lesssim3\text{ GeV}$ and matrix elements featuring a large momentum dependence can be resolved.

Pion valence quark distribution from current-current correlation in lattice QCD

We extract the pion valence quark distribution $q^π_{\rm v}(x)$ from lattice QCD (LQCD) calculated matrix elements of spacelike correlations of one vector and one axial vector current analyzed in terms of QCD collinear factorization, using a new short-distance matching coefficient calculated to one-loop accuracy. We derive the Ioffe time distribution of the two-current correlations in the physical limit by investigating the finite lattice spacing, volume, quark mass, and higher-twist dependencies in a simultaneous fit of matrix elements computed on four gauge ensembles. We find remarkable consistency between our extracted $q^π_{\rm v}(x)$ and that obtained from experimental data across the entire $x$-range. Further, we demonstrate that the one-loop matching coefficient relating the LQCD matrix computed in position space to the $q_{\rm v}^π(x)$ in momentum space has well-controlled behavior with Ioffe time. This justifies that LQCD calculated current-current correlations are good observables for extracting partonic structures by using QCD factorization, which complements to the global effort to extract partonic structure from experimental data.

An $a_0$ resonance in strongly coupled $πη$, $K\overline{K}$ scattering from lattice QCD

We present the first calculation of coupled-channel meson-meson scattering in the isospin $=1$, $G$-parity negative sector, with channels $πη$, $K\overline{K}$ and $πη'$, in a first-principles approach to QCD. From the discrete spectrum of eigenstates in three volumes extracted from lattice QCD correlation functions we determine the energy dependence of the $S$-matrix, and find that the $S$-wave features a prominent cusp-like structure in $πη\to πη$ close to $K\overline{K}$ threshold coupled with a rapid turn on of amplitudes leading to the $K\overline{K}$ final-state. This behavior is traced to an $a_0(980)$-like resonance, strongly coupled to both $πη$ and $K\overline{K}$, which is identified with a pole in the complex energy plane, appearing on only a single unphysical Riemann sheet. Consideration of $D$-wave scattering suggests a narrow tensor resonance at higher energy.

The $ππ\toπγ^\star$ amplitude and the resonant $ρ\toπγ^\star$ transition from lattice QCD

We present a determination of the $P$-wave $ππ\toπγ^\star$ transition amplitude from lattice quantum chromodynamics. Matrix elements of the vector current in a finite-volume are extracted from three-point correlation functions, and from these we determine the infinite-volume amplitude using a generalization of the Lellouch-Lüscher formalism. We determine the amplitude for a range of discrete values of the $ππ$ energy and virtuality of the photon, and observe the expected dynamical enhancement due to the $ρ$ resonance. Describing the energy dependence of the amplitude, we are able to analytically continue into the complex energy plane and from the residue at the $ρ$ pole extract the $ρ\to πγ^\star$ transition form factor. This calculation, at $m_π\approx 400$ MeV, is the first to determine the form factor of an unstable hadron within a first principles approach to QCD.

Coupled $ππ, K\overline{K}$ scattering in $P$-wave and the $ρ$ resonance from lattice QCD

We determine elastic and coupled-channel amplitudes for isospin-1 meson-meson scattering in $P$-wave, by calculating correlation functions using lattice QCD with light quark masses such that $m_π= 236$ MeV in a cubic volume of $\sim (4 \,\mathrm{fm})^3$. Variational analyses of large matrices of correlation functions computed using operator constructions resembling $ππ$, $K\overline{K}$ and $q\bar{q}$, in several moving frames and several lattice irreducible representations, leads to discrete energy spectra from which scattering amplitudes are extracted. In the elastic $ππ$ scattering region we obtain a detailed energy-dependence for the phase-shift, corresponding to a $ρ$ resonance, and we extend the analysis into the coupled-channel $K\overline{K}$ region for the first time, finding a small coupling between the channels.

Excited meson radiative transitions from lattice QCD using variationally optimized operators

We explore the use of optimized operators, designed to interpolate only a single meson eigenstate, in three-point correlation functions with a vector-current insertion. These operators are constructed as linear combinations in a large basis of meson interpolating fields using a variational analysis of matrices of two-point correlation functions. After performing such a determination at both zero and non-zero momentum, we compute three-point functions and are able to study radiative transition matrix elements featuring excited state mesons. The required two- and three-point correlation functions are efficiently computed using the distillation framework in which there is a factorization between quark propagation and operator construction, allowing for a large number of meson operators of definite momentum to be considered. We illustrate the method with a calculation using anisotopic lattices having three flavors of dynamical quark all tuned to the physical strange quark mass, considering form-factors and transitions of pseudoscalar and vector meson excitations. The dependence on photon virtuality for a number of form-factors and transitions is extracted and some discussion of excited-state phenomenology is presented.

Resonances in coupled $πK, ηK$ scattering from lattice QCD

Coupled-channel $πK$ and $ηK$ scattering amplitudes are determined by studying the finite-volume energy spectra obtained from dynamical lattice QCD calculations. Using a large basis of interpolating operators, including both those resembling a $q\bar{q}$ construction and those resembling a pair of mesons with relative momentum, a reliable excited-state spectrum can be obtained. Working at ${m_π=391\,\mathrm{MeV}}$, we find a gradual increase in the $J^P=0^+$ $πK$ phase-shift which may be identified with a broad scalar resonance that couples strongly to $πK$ and weakly to $ηK$. The low-energy behavior of this amplitude suggests a virtual bound-state that may be related to the $κ$ resonance. A bound state with $J^P=1^-$ is found very close to the $πK$ threshold energy, whose coupling to the $πK$ channel is compatible with that of the experimental $K^\star(892)$. Evidence is found for a narrow resonance in $J^P=2^+$. Isospin--3/2 $πK$ scattering is also studied and non-resonant phase-shifts spanning the whole elastic scattering region are obtained.

Spectroscopy of doubly-charmed baryons from lattice QCD

We present the ground and excited state spectra of doubly charmed baryons from lattice QCD with dynamical quark fields. Calculations are performed on anisotropic lattices of size 16^3 X 128, with inverse spacing in temporal direction 1/a_t = 5.67(4) GeV and with a pion mass of about 390 MeV. A large set of baryonic operators that respect the symmetries of the lattice yet which retain a memory of their continuum analogues are used. These operators transform as irreducible representations of SU(3) symmetry for flavor, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) for spatial symmetry. The distillation method is utilized to generate baryon correlation functions which are analysed using the variational fitting method to extract excited states. The lattice spectra obtained have baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to 7/2 and the pattern of low lying states does not support the diquark picture for doubly charmed baryons. On the contrary the calculated spectra are remarkably similar to the expectations from models with an SU(6)X O(3) symmetry. Various spin dependent energy splittings between the extracted states are also evaluated.

The resonant $π^+γ\toπ^+π^0$ amplitude from Quantum Chromodynamics

We present the first ab initio calculation of a radiative transition of a hadronic resonance within quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We compute the amplitude for $ππ\to πγ^\star$, as a function of the energy of the $ππ$ pair and the virtuality of the photon, in the kinematic regime where $ππ$ couples strongly to the unstable $ρ$ resonance. This exploratory calculation is performed using a lattice discretization of QCD with quark masses corresponding to $m_π\approx 400$~MeV. We obtain a description of the energy dependence of the transition amplitude, constrained at 48 kinematic points, that we can analytically continue to the $ρ$ pole and identify from its residue the $ρ\to πγ^\star$ form factor.

Energy dependence of the ρ resonance in ππ elastic scattering from lattice QCD

We determine the energy-dependent amplitude for elastic ππ P-wave scattering in isospin-1 by computing part of the discrete energy spectrum of QCD in finite cubic boxes. We observe a rapidly rising phase shift that can be well described by a single ρ resonance. The spectrum is obtained from hadron correlators computed using lattice QCD with light quark masses corresponding to mπ ~ 400 MeV. Variational analyses are performed with large bases of hadron interpolating fields including, as well as fermion bilinears that resemble q-qbar constructions, also operators that resemble pairs of pions with definite relative and total momentum. We compute the spectrum for a range of center-of-mass momenta and in various irreducible representations of the relevant symmetry group. Hence we determine more than thirty values of the isospin-1 P-wave scattering phase shift in the elastic region, mapping out its energy dependence in unprecedented detail.

A large set of baryonic operators that respect the symmetries of the lattice and are obtained after subduction from their continuum analogues are utilized. These operators transform as irreducible representations of SU(3)$_F$ symmetry for flavour, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) symmetry for orbital angular momenta. Using novel computational techniques correlation functions of these operators are generated and the variational method is exploited to extract excited states. The lattice spectra that we obtain have baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to 7/2 and the low lying states remarkably resemble the expectations of quantum numbers from SU(6)$\otimes$O(3) symmetry.

Resonances in coupled πK,ηK scattering from quantum chromodynamics

Using first-principles calculation within Quantum Chromodynamics, we are able to determine a pattern of strangeness=1 resonances which appear as complex singularities within coupled $πK$, $ηK$ scattering amplitudes. We make use of numerical computation in the lattice discretized approach to the quantum field theory with light quark masses corresponding to $m_π\sim 400\, \textrm{MeV}$ and at a single lattice spacing. The energy dependence of scattering amplitudes is extracted through their relationship to the discrete spectrum in a finite-volume, which we map out in unprecedented detail.

The Flavor Structure of the Excited Baryon Spectra from Lattice QCD

Excited state spectra are calculated using lattice QCD for baryons that can be formed from $u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks, namely the $N$, $Δ$, $Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ families of baryons. Baryonic operators are constructed from continuum operators that transform as irreducible representations of SU(3)$_F$ symmetry for flavor, SU(4) symmetry for Dirac spins of quarks and O(3) symmetry for orbital angular momenta. Covariant derivatives are used to realize orbital angular momenta. Using the operators, we calculate matrices of correlation functions in order to extract excited states. The resulting lattice spectra have bands of baryonic states with well-defined total spins up to $J=7/2$. Each state can be assigned a dominant flavor symmetry and the counting of states of each flavor and spin reflects $SU(6) \times O(3)$ symmetry for the lowest negative-parity and positive-parity bands. States with strong hybrid content are identified through the dominance of chromo-magnetic operators.

Toward the excited isoscalar meson spectrum from lattice QCD

We report on the extraction of an excited spectrum of isoscalar mesons using lattice QCD. Calculations on several lattice volumes are performed with a range of light quark masses corresponding to pion masses down to about 400 MeV. The distillation method enables us to evaluate the required disconnected contributions with high statistical precision for a large number of meson interpolating fields. We find relatively little mixing between light and strange in most JPC channels; one notable exception is the pseudoscalar sector where the approximate SU(3)F octet, singlet structure of the η, η' is reproduced. We extract exotic JPC states, identified as hybrid mesons in which an excited gluonic field is coupled to a color-octet qqbar pair, along with non-exotic hybrid mesons embedded in a qqbar-like spectrum.

Excited and exotic charmonium spectroscopy from lattice QCD

We present a spectrum of highly excited charmonium mesons up to around 4.5 GeV calculated using dynamical lattice QCD. Employing novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+, 2+-) and states with high spin. Calculations are performed on two lattice volumes with pion mass approximately 400 MeV and the mass determinations have high statistical precision even for excited states. We discuss the results in light of experimental observations, identify the lightest 'supermultiplet' of hybrid mesons and comment on the phenomenological implications of the spectrum of exotic mesons.

Helicity operators for mesons in flight on the lattice

Motivated by the desire to construct meson-meson operators of definite relative momentum in order to study resonances in lattice QCD, we present a set of single-meson interpolating fields at non-zero momentum that respect the reduced symmetry of a cubic lattice in a finite cubic volume. These operators follow from the subduction of operators of definite helicity into irreducible representations of the appropriate little groups. We show their effectiveness in explicit computations where we find that the spectrum of states interpolated by these operators is close to diagonal in helicity, admitting a description in terms of single-meson states of identified J^{PC}. The variationally determined optimal superpositions of the operators for each state give rapid relaxation in Euclidean time to that state, ideal for the construction of meson-meson operators and for the evaluation of matrix elements at finite momentum.

Hybrid Baryons in QCD

We present the first comprehensive study of hybrid baryons using lattice QCD methods. Using a large basis of composite QCD interpolating fields we extract an extensive spectrum of baryon states and isolate those of hybrid character using their relatively large overlap onto operators which sample gluonic excitations. We consider the spectrum of Nucleon and Delta states at several quark masses finding a set of positive parity hybrid baryons with quantum numbers N_1/2+, N_1/2+, N_3/2+, N_3/2+, N_5/2+ and Delta_1/2+, Delta_3/2+ at an energy scale above the first band of `conventional' excited positive parity baryons. This pattern of states is compatible with a color octet gluonic excitation having J^P=1+ as previously reported in the hybrid meson sector and with a comparable energy scale for the excitation, suggesting a common bound-state construction for hybrid mesons and baryons.

S and D-wave phase shifts in isospin-2 pi pi scattering from lattice QCD

The isospin-2 pi pi system provides a useful testing ground for determining elastic hadron scattering parameters from finite-volume spectra obtained using lattice QCD computations. A reliable determination of the excited state spectrum of two pions in a cubic box follows from variational analysis of correlator matrices constructed using a large basis of operators. A general operator construction is presented which respects the symmetries of a multi-hadron system in flight. This is applied to the case of pi pi and allows for the determination of the scattering phase-shifts at a large number of kinematic points, in both S-wave and D-wave, within the elastic region. The technique is demonstrated with a calculation at a pion mass of 396 MeV, where the elastic scattering is found to be well described by a scattering length parameterisation.

Excited state baryon spectroscopy from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the Nucleon and Delta excited state spectrum on dynamical anisotropic clover lattices. A method for operator construction is introduced that allows for the reliable identification of the continuum spins of baryon states, overcoming the reduced symmetry of the cubic lattice. Using this method, we are able to determine a spectrum of single-particle states for spins up to and including J = 7/2, of both parities, the first time this has been achieved in a lattice calculation. We find a spectrum of states identifiable as admixtures of SU(6) x O(3) representations and a counting of levels that is consistent with the non-relativistic $qqq$ constituent quark model. This dense spectrum is incompatible with quark-diquark model solutions to the "missing resonance problem" and shows no signs of parity doubling of states.

Isoscalar meson spectroscopy from lattice QCD

We extract to high statistical precision an excited spectrum of single-particle isoscalar mesons using lattice QCD, including states of high spin and, for the first time, light exotic JPC isoscalars. The use of a novel quark field construction has enabled us to overcome the long-standing challenge of efficiently including quark-annihilation contributions. Hidden-flavor mixing angles are extracted and while most states are found to be close to ideally flavor mixed, there are examples of large mixing in the pseudoscalar and axial sectors in line with experiment. The exotic JPC isoscalar states appear at a mass scale comparable to the exotic isovector states.

The phase-shift of isospin-2 pi-pi scattering from lattice QCD

Finite-volume lattice QCD calculations offer the possibility of extracting resonance parameters from the energy-dependent elastic phase-shift computed using the Luescher technique. In this letter, as a trial of the method, we report on the extraction of the non-resonant phase-shift for S and D-wave pi-pi isospin-2 scattering from dynamical lattice QCD computations. We define a variational basis of operators resembling pairs of pions of definite relative momentum and extract a spectrum of excited states that maps to phase-shifts at a set of discrete scattering momenta. Computations are performed with pion masses between 400 and 520 MeV on multiple spatial volumes. We observe no significant quark mass dependence in the phase-shifts extracted which are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data at low momentum.

Lattice Calculations of Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors at Large Momentum Transfer

In this work, we report a novel technique in lattice QCD for studying the high momentum-transfer region of nucleon form factors. These calculations could give important theoretical input to experiments, such as those of JLab's 12-GeV program and studies of nucleon deformation. There is an extensive history of form-factor calculations on the lattice, primarily with ground states for both the initial and final state. However, determining form factors at large momentum transfer ($Q^2$) has been difficult due to large statistical and systematic errors in this regime. We study the nucleon form factors using three pion masses with both quenched and 2+1-flavor anisotropic lattice configurations with $Q^2$ as large as $6 GeV^2$. These form factors are further processed to obtain transverse charge and magnetization densities across 2-dimensional impact-parameter space. Our approach can be applied to isotropic lattices and lattices with smaller lattice spacing to calculate even larger-$Q^2$ form factors.

We perform extrapolations of our data based on different chiral effective field theory schemes and compare our results with available information from phenomenology. Nucleon, Delta and Omega excited state spectra at three pion mass values

The energies of the excited states of the Nucleon, Delta and Omega are computed in lattice QCD, using two light quarks and one strange quark on anisotropic lattices. The calculations are performed at three values of the pion mass: 392(4), 438(3) and 521(3) MeV. We employ the variational method with a basis of about ten interpolating operators enabling six energies to be distinguished clearly in each irreducible representation of the octahedral group. We compare our calculations of nucleon excited states with the low-lying experimental spectrum. There is reasonable agreement for the pattern of states.

Toward the excited meson spectrum of dynamical QCD

We present a detailed description of the extraction of the highly excited isovector meson spectrum on dynamical anisotropic lattices using a new quark-field construction algorithm and a large variational basis of operators. With careful operator construction, the combination of these techniques is used to identify the continuum spin of extracted states reliably, overcoming the reduced rotational symmetry of the cubic lattice. Excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+ and 2+-) and states of high spin are resolved, including, for the first time in a lattice QCD calculation, spin-four states. The determinations of the spectrum of isovector mesons and kaons are performed on dynamical lattices with two volumes and with pion masses down to ~ 400 MeV, with statistical precision typically at or below 1% even for highly excited states.

The HSC has been investigating interpolating operators projected into irreducible representations of the cubic group in order to better calculate two-point correlators for nucleon spectroscopy; results are published for quenched and 2-flavor anisotropic Wilson lattices. Cascade Baryon Spectrum from Lattice QCD

A comprehensive study of the cascade baryon spectrum using lattice QCD affords the prospect of predicting the masses of states not yet discovered experimentally, and determining the spin and parity of those states for which the quantum numbers are not yet known. The study of the cascades, containing two strange quarks, is particularly attractive for lattice QCD in that the chiral effects are reduced compared to states composed only of u/d quarks, and the states are typically narrow. We report preliminary results for the cascade spectrum obtained by using anisotropic N_f = 2 Wilson lattices with temporal lattice spacing inverse 5.56 GeV.

We obtain several states for each irrep and identify the continuum spin for the lowest-lying states, including a $J^P={5/2}^-$ state.

Light-Meson Two-Photon Decays in Full QCD

We present a study of two-photon decays of light mesons, focusing on the neutral pion decay. This important process highlights the effects of the axial anomaly in QCD but has been little studied on the lattice. Parameter Tuning of Three-Flavor Dynamical Anisotropic Clover Action

In this work, we perform parameter tuning with dynamical anisotropic clover lattices using the Schrödinger functional and stout-smearing in the fermion field. We find that $ξ_R/ξ_0$ is relatively close to 1 in our parameter search, which allows us to fix $ξ_0$ in our runs. We proposed to determine the gauge and fermion anisotropy in a Schrödinger-background small box using Wilson loop ratios and PCAC masses. We demonstrate that these ideas are equivalent to but more efficient than the conventional meson dispersion approach. The spatial and temporal clover coefficients are fixed to the tree-level tadpole-improved clover values, and we demonstrate that they satisfy the nonperturbative condition determined by Schrödinger functional method.

Radiative Transitions in Charmonium from Lattice QCD

Radiative transitions between charmonium states offer an insight into the internal structure of heavy-quark bound states within QCD. We compute, for the first time within lattice QCD, the transition form-factors of various multipolarities between the lightest few charmonium states. In addition, we compute the experimentally unobservable, but physically interesting vector form-factors of the $η_c, J/ψ$ and $χ_{c0}$. To this end we apply an ambitious combination of lattice techniques, computing three-point functions with heavy domain wall fermions on an anisotropic lattice within the quenched approximation. With an anisotropy $ξ=3$ at $a_s \sim 0.1 \mathrm{fm}$ we find a reasonable gross spectrum and a hyperfine splitting $\sim 90 \mathrm{MeV}$, which compares favourably with other improved actions. In general, after extrapolation of lattice data at non-zero $Q^2$ to the photopoint, our results agree within errors with all well measured experimental values. Furthermore, results are compared with the expectations of simple quark models where we find that many features are in agreement; beyond this we propose the possibility of constraining such models using our extracted values of physically unobservable quantities such as the $J/ψ$ quadrupole moment. We conclude that our methods are successful and propose to apply them to the problem of radiative transitions involving hybrid mesons, with the eventual goal of predicting hybrid meson photoproduction rates at the GlueX experiment.

Hadron structure with light dynamical quarks

Generalized parton distributions encompass a wealth of information concerning the three-dimensional quark and gluon structure of the nucleon, and thus provide an ideal focus for the study of hadron structure using lattice QCD. The special limits corresponding to form factors and parton distributions are well explored experimentally, providing clear tests of lattice calculations, and the lack of experimental data for more general cases provides opportunities for genuine predictions and for guiding experiment. We present results from hybrid calculations with improved staggered (Asqtad) sea quarks and domain wall valence quarks at pion masses down to 350 MeV.

Are Topological Charge Fluctuations in QCD Instanton Dominated?

We consider a recent proposal by Horváth {\em et al.} to address the question whether topological charge fluctuations in QCD are instanton dominated via the response of fermions using lattice fermions with exact chiral symmetry, the overlap fermions. Considering several volumes and lattice spacings we find strong evidence for chirality of a finite density of low-lying eigenvectors of the overlap-Dirac operator in the regions where these modes are peaked. This result suggests instanton dominance of topological charge fluctuations in quenched QCD.

Probing the QCD vacuum with overlap fermions

We use low lying eigenvectors of the overlap-Dirac operator as a probe of the QCD vacuum. If instantons play a significant role one would expect the low lying eigenmodes of the overlap-Dirac operator to consist mainly of the mixed ``would be zero modes''. Then, the eigenmodes should exhibit local chirality. Studying a recently introduced local chirality parameter, we find evidence supporting this picture.

Exact Chiral Symmetry for Domain Wall Fermions with Finite L_s

We show how the standard domain wall action can be simply modified to allow arbitrarily exact chiral symmetry at finite fifth dimensional extent $L_s$. We note that the method can be used for both quenched and dynamical calculations. We test the method using smooth and thermalized gauge field configurations. We also make comparisons of the performance (cost) of the domain wall operator for spectroscopy compared to other methods such as the overlap-Dirac operator and find both methods are comparable in cost.

We compute the low lying spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator in the deconfined phase of finite-temperature quenched gauge theory. It suggests the existence of a chiral condensate which we confirm with a direct stochastic estimate. We show that the part of the spectrum responsible for the chiral condensate can be understood as arising from a dilute gas of instantons and anti-instantons.

Topology and chiral symmetry in finite temperature QCD

We investigate the realization of chiral symmetry in the vicinity of the deconfinement transition in quenched QCD using overlap fermions. Via the index theorem obeyed by the overlap fermions, we gain insight into the behavior of topology at finite temperature. We find small eigenvalues, clearly separated from the bulk of the eigenvalues, and study the properties of their distribution. We compare the distribution with a model of a dilute gas of instantons and anti-instantons and find good agreement.

A Study of Practical Implementations of the Overlap-Dirac Operator in Four Dimensions

We study three practical implementations of the Overlap-Dirac operator $D_o= (1/2) [1 + γ_5ε(H_w)]$ in four dimensions. Two implementations are based on different representations of $ε(H_w)$ as a sum over poles. One of them is a polar decomposition and the other is an optimal fit to a ratio of polynomials. The third one is obtained by representing $ε(H_w)$ using Gegenbauer polynomials and is referred to as the fractional inverse method. After presenting some spectral properties of the Hermitian operator $H_o=γ_5 D_o$, we study its spectrum in a smooth SU(2) instanton background with the aim of comparing the three implementations of $D_o$. We also present some results in SU(2) gauge field backgrounds generated at $β=2.5$ on an $8^4$ lattice. Chiral properties have been numerically verified.

The hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator in smooth SU(2) instanton backgrounds

We study the spectral flow of the hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator $\ham(m)$ as a function of $m$ in smooth SU(2) instanton backgrounds on the lattice. For a single instanton background with Dirichlet boundary conditions on $\ham(m)$, we find a level crossing in the spectral flow of $\ham(m)$, and we find the shape of the crossing mode at the crossing point to be in good agreement with the zero mode associated with the single instanton background. With anti-periodic boundary conditions on $\ham(m)$, we find that the instanton background in the singular gauge has the correct spectral flow but the one in regular gauge does not. We also investigate the spectral flows of two instanton and instanton-anti-instanton backgrounds.

SCRI Results With the Tadpole-Improved Clover Action

We compare light hadron spectroscopy using the Wilson and Clover fermionic actions. We show that a Clover coefficient chosen using tadpole-improved tree-level perturbation theory effectively eliminates the O(a) discretization errors present in the Wilson action. We find that discretization errors in light spectroscopy for both the Wilson and Clover actions are characterized by an energy scale mu of about 200-300 MeV, indicating that these errors can be reduced to the 5% level by using the Clover action at an inverse lattice spacing of about 1.3 GeV.

Comparing Wilson and Clover Quenched $SU(3)$ Spectroscopy with an Improved Gauge Action

We present results of quenched $SU(3)$ hadron spectroscopy comparing $\order(a)$ improved Wilson (Clover) fermions with conventional Wilson fermions. The configurations were generated using an $\order(a^2)$ improved 6-link $SU(3)$ pure gauge action at $β$'s corresponding to lattice spacings of $0.15$, $0.18$, $0.20$, $0.33$, and $0.43$ fm. We find evidence that fermionic scaling violations are consistent with $\order(a^2)$ for Clover and $\order(a)$ with a nonnegligible $\order(a^2)$ term for standard Wilson fermions. This latter mixed ansatz makes a reliable continuum extrapolation problematic for Wilson fermions. We also find that the slope of the scaling violations is roughly $250 MeV$ for both Wilson and Clover fermions.

A Comparison of Clover and Wilson Spectroscopy in the Presence of Dynamical Quarks

We present preliminary results of light hadron spectroscopy using valence, tadpole-improved, Clover fermions on an ensemble of gauge configurations generated with 2 flavors of staggered fermions at a beta of 5.6. We compare the slope and intercept of the curve M_V vs. M_PS^2 for Clover and Wilson fermions. We show that a higher order chiral perturbation theory ansatz works very well for chiral extrapolations.

Quenched $SU(3)$ hadron spectroscopy using improved fermionic and gauge actions

We present results of quenched $SU(3)$ hadron spectroscopy using $\order(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. The configurations were generated using an $\order(a^2)$ improved 6-link $SU(3)$ pure gauge action at $β$'s corresponding to lattice spacings of $0.43$, $0.25$, $0.20$, $0.18$, and $0.15$ fm. We find evidence that fermionic scaling violations are consistent with $\order(a^2)$ errors.

On the Dynamics of Light Quarks in QCD

We describe recent results concerning the behavior of lattice QCD with light dynamical Wilson and Staggered quarks. We show that it is possible to reach regions of parameter space with light pions $m_π\approx 0.2/a$ using Wilson fermions. If the Hybrid Molecular Dynamics (HMD) algorithm is used with the same parameters it gives incorrect results. We also present preliminary results using a higher-order integration scheme.
