Common sublattice-pure van Hove singularities in the kagome superconductors $\textit{A}$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($\textit{A}$ = K, Rb, Cs)

Kagome materials offer a versatile platform for exploring correlated and topological quantum states, where van Hove singularities (VHSs) play a pivotal role in driving electronic instabilities, exhibiting distinct behaviors depending on electron filling and interaction settings. In the recently discovered kagome superconductors $\textit{A}$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($\textit{A}$ = K, Rb, Cs), unconventional charge density wave order, superconductivity, and electronic chirality emerge, yet the nature of VHSs near the Fermi level ($\textit{E}$$_{F}$) and their connection to these exotic orders remain elusive. Here, using high-resolution polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we uncover a universal electronic structure across $\textit{A}$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ that is distinct from density-functional theory predictions that show noticeable discrepancies. We identify multiple common sublattice-pure VHSs near $\textit{E}$$_{F}$, arising from strong V-$\textit{d}$/Sb-$\textit{p}$ hybridization, which significantly promote bond-order fluctuations and likely drive the observed charge density wave order. These findings provide direct spectroscopic evidence for hybridization-driven VHS formation in kagome metals and establish a unified framework for understanding the intertwined electronic instabilities in $\textit{A}$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$.

Band Structure and Polarization Effects in Photothermoelectric Spectroscopy of a Bi2Se3 Device

Bi2Se3 is a prototypical topological insulator which has a small band gap (~0.3 eV) and topologically protected conducting surface states. This material exhibits quite strong thermoelectric effects. Here we show in a mechanically exfoliated thick (~100 nm) nanoflake device that we can measure the energy dependent optical absorption through the photothermoelectric effect. Spectral signatures are seen for a number of optical transitions between the valence and conduction bands, including a broad peak at 1.5 eV which is likely dominated by bulk band-to-band optical transitions but is at the same energy as the well known optical transition between the two topologically protected conducting surface states. We also observe a surprising linear polarization dependence in the response of the device that reflects the influence of the metal contacts.

Charge density wave order in kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A= Cs, Rb, K)

We employ polarization-resolved electronic Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory to study the primary and secondary order parameters, as well as their interplay, in the charge density wave (CDW) state of the kagome metal AV3Sb5. Previous x-ray diffraction data at 15K established that the CDW order in CsV3Sb5 comprises of a 2x2x4 structure: one layer of inverse-star-of-David and three consecutive layers of star-of-David pattern. We analyze the lattice distortions based the 2x2x4 structure at 15K, and find that U lattice distortion is the primary order parameter while M and L distortions are secondary order parameters for Vanadium displacements. This conclusion is confirmed by the calculation of bare susceptibility that shows a broad peak at around qz=0.25 along the hexagonal Brillouin zone face central line (U-line). We also identify several phonon modes emerging in the CDW state, which are lattice vibration modes related to V and Sb atoms as well as alkali atoms. The detailed temperature evolution of these modes' frequencies, HWHM, and integrated intensities support a phase diagram with two successive structural phase transitions in CsV3Sb5: the first one with a primary order parameter appearing at TS=94K and the second isostructural one appearing at around 70K.

Electronic and structural properties of RbCeX$_2$ (X$_2$: O$_2$, S$_2$, SeS, Se$_2$, TeSe, Te$_2$)

Triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCe$X_2$ compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce$^{3+}$ ions, upon varying their anion character ($X_2$= O$_2$, S$_2$, SeS, Se$_2$, TeSe, Te$_2$). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO$_2$, that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO$_2$. Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and \textit{ab initio} calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the $J=5/2$ multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the $J=5/2$ manifold, we observe one extra, local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce$^{3+}$ sites.

Fermi level tuning and double-dome superconductivity in the kagome metals CsV$_3$Sb$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$

The recently reported \textit{A}V$_3$Sb$_5$ (\textit{A} = K, Rb, Cs) family of kagome metals are candidates for unconventional superconductivity and chiral charge density wave (CDW) order; both potentially arise from nested saddle points in their band structures close to the Fermi energy. Here we use chemical substitution to introduce holes into CsV$_3$Sb$_{5}$ and unveil an unconventionalcoupling of the CDW and superconducting states. Specifically, we generate a phase diagram for CsV$_3$Sb$_{5-x}$Sn$_{x}$ that illustrates the impact of hole-doping the system and lifting the nearest vHs toward and above $E_F$. Superconductivity exhibits a non-monotonic evolution with the introduction of holes, resulting in two "domes" peaked at 3.6\,K and 4.1\,K and the rapid suppression of three-dimensional CDW order. The evolution of CDW and superconducting order is compared with the evolution of the electronic band structure of CsV$_3$Sb$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$, where the complete suppression of superconductivity seemingly coincides with an electron-like band comprised of Sb $p_z$ orbitals pushed above E$_F$.

Phonon Chirality Induced by Vibronic-Orbital Coupling

The notion that phonons can carry pseudo-angular momentum has become popular in the last decade, with recent research efforts highlighting phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to a crystal electric field excitation, a so-called vibronic bound state forms. Here, we observe angular momentum transfer of $δ$Jz = $\pm$1$\hbar$ between phonons and an orbital state in a vibronic bound state of a candidate quantum spin liquid. This observation has profound implications for the engineering of phonon band structure topology through chiral quasiparticle interactions.

Role of Sb in the superconducting kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ revealed by its anisotropic compression

Pressure evolution of the superconducting kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is studied with single-crystal x-ray diffraction and density-functional band-structure calculations. A highly anisotropic compression observed up to 5 GPa is ascribed to the fast shrinkage of the Cs-Sb distances and suppression of Cs rattling motion. This prevents Sb displacements required to stabilize the three-dimensional charge-density-wave (CDW) order and elucidates the disappearance of the CDW already at 2 GPa despite only minor changes in the electronic structure of the normal state. At higher pressures, vanadium bands still change only marginally, whereas antimony bands undergo a major reconstruction caused by the gradual formation of the interlayer Sb-Sb bonds. Our results exclude pressure tuning of vanadium kagome bands as the main mechanism for the non-trivial evolution of superconductivity in real-world kagome metals. Concurrently, we establish the central role of Sb atoms in the stabilization of a three-dimensional CDW and Fermi surface reconstruction.

Study of the electronic properties of topological kagome metals YV$_6$Sn$_6$ and GdV$_6$Sn$_6$

The synthesis and characterization of vanadium-based kagome metals YV$_6$Sn$_6$ and GdV$_6$Sn$_6$ are presented. X-ray diffraction, magnetization, magnetotransport, and heat capacity measurements reveal an ideal kagome network of V-ions coordinated by Sn and separated by triangular lattice planes of rare-earth ions. The onset of low-temperature, likely noncollinear, magnetic order of Gd spins is detected in GdV$_6$Sn$_6$, while V-ions in both compounds remain nonmagnetic. Density functional theory calculations are presented modeling the band structures of both compounds, which can be classified as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metals in the paramagnetic state. Both compounds exhibit high mobility, multiband transport and present an interesting platform for controlling the interplay between magnetic order associated with the $R$-site sublattice and nontrivial band topology associated with the V-based kagome network. Our results invite future exploration of other $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$=rare earth) variants where this interplay can be tuned via $R$-site substitution.

Tuning charge-density wave order and superconductivity in the kagome metals KV$_3$Sb$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$

The family of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome metals exhibit charge density wave (CDW) order, proposed to be chiral, followed by a lower temperature superconducting state. Recent studies have proposed the importance of band structure saddle points proximal to the Fermi energy in governing these two transitions. Here we show the effects of hole-doping achieved via chemical substitution of Sn for Sb on the CDW and superconducting states in both KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, and generate a phase diagram. Hole-doping lifts the $Γ$ pocket and van Hove singularities (vHs) toward $E_F$ causing the superconducting $T_C$ in both systems to increase to about 4.5 K, while rapidly suppressing the CDW state.

A Raman Probe of Phonons and Electron-phonon Interactions in NbIrTe4

The semimetal NbIrTe4 has been proposed to be a Type-II Weyl semimetal with 8 pairs of opposite Chirality Weyl nodes which are very close to the Fermi energy. This topological electronic structure is made possible because of the broken inversion symmetry of NbIrTe4 which is an orthorhombic crystal with Td symmetry. Using micro-Raman scattering as a probe, we observe the frequencies and symmetries of 19 phonon modes (ranging from 40 to 260 cm-1) in this material and compare to Density Functional Theory calculations. Using angular and polarization resolved Raman scattering for green (514 nm) and red (633 nm) laser excitation, we show that it is possible to extract the excitation energy dependence of the Raman tensor elements associated with each measurable phonon mode. We show that these tensor elements vary substantially in a small energy range which reflects a strong variation of the electron-phonon coupling for these modes.

Charge-order-assisted topological surface states and flat bands in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The diversity of emergent phenomena in quantum materials often arises from the interplay between different physical energy scales or broken symmetries. Cooperative interactions among them are rare; however, when they do occur, they often stabilize fundamentally new ground states or phase behaviors. For instance, a pair density wave can form when the superconducting order parameter borrows spatial periodical variation from charge order; a topological superconductor can arise when topologically nontrivial electronic states proximitize with or participate in the formation of the superconducting condensate. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence for a unique synergy of topology and correlation effects in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ - one where topologically nontrivial surface states are pushed below the Fermi energy (E$_F$) by charge order, making the topological physics active near E$_F$ upon entering the superconducting state. Flat bands are observed, indicating that electron correlation effects are also at play in this system. Our results reveal the peculiar electronic structure of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, which holds the potential for realizing Majorana zero modes and anomalous superconducting states in kagome lattices. They also establish CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a unique platform for exploring the cooperation between the charge order, topology, correlation effects and superconductivity.

Evolution of superconductivity and charge order in pressurized RbV$_3$Sb$_5$

The kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) under ambient pressure exhibit an unusual charge order, from which superconductivity emerges. In this work, by applying hydrostatic pressure using a liquid pressure medium and carrying out electrical resistance measurements for RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, we find the charge order becomes suppressed under a modest pressure $p_{\rm c}$ ($1.4<p_{\rm c}<1.6$ GPa), while the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is maximized. $T_{\rm c}$ is then gradually weakened with further increase of pressure and reaches a minimum around 14.3 GPa, before exhibiting another maximum around 22.8 GPa, signifying the presence of a second superconducting dome. Distinct normal state resistance anomalies are found to be associated with the second superconducting dome, similar to KV$_3$Sb$_5$. Our findings point to qualitatively similar temperature-pressure phase diagrams in KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, and suggest a close link between the second superconducting dome and the high-pressure resistance anomalies.

Realizing Kagome Band Structure in Two-Dimensional Kagome Surface States of $RV_{6}Sn_{6}$ ($R$=Gd,Ho)

We report angle resolved photoemission experiments on a newly discovered family of kagome metals $RV_{6}Sn_{6}$ ($R$=Gd, Ho). Intrinsic bulk states and surface states of the vanadium kagome layer are differentiated from those of other atomic sublattices by the real-space resolution of the measurements with a small beam spot. Characteristic Dirac cone, saddle point and flat bands of the kagome lattice are observed. Our results establish the two-dimensional (2D) kagome surface states as a new platform to investigate the intrinsic kagome physics.

Rotation symmetry breaking in the normal state of a kagome superconductor KV3Sb5

Recently discovered kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) provide a fresh opportunity to realize and study correlation-driven electronic phenomena on a kagome lattice. The observation of a 2a0 by 2a0 charge density wave (CDW) in the normal state of all members of AV3Sb5 kagome family has generated an enormous amount of interest, in an effort to uncover the nature of this CDW state, and identify any "hidden" broken symmetries. We use spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal a pronounced intensity anisotropy between different 2a0 CDW directions in KV3Sb5. In particular, by examining the strength of ordering wave vectors as a function of energy in Fourier transforms of differential conductance maps, we find that one of the CDW directions is distinctly different compared to the other two. This observation points towards an intrinsic rotation symmetry broken electronic ground state, where the symmetry is reduced from C6 to C2. Furthermore, in contrast to previous reports, we find that the CDW phase is insensitive to magnetic field direction, regardless of the presence or absence of atomic defects. Our experiments, combined with earlier observations of a stripe 4a0 charge ordering in CsV3Sb5, establish correlation-driven rotation symmetry breaking as a unifying feature of AV3Sb5 kagome superconductors.

Strain-sensitive superconductivity in kagome metals KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ probed by point-contact spectroscopy

The kagome lattice is host to flat bands, topological electronic structures, Van Hove singularities and diverse electronic instabilities, providing an ideal platform for realizing highly tunable electronic states. Here, we report soft- and mechanical- point-contact spectroscopy (SPCS and MPCS) studies of the kagome superconductors KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Compared to the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ from specific heat measurements (2.8~K for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and 1.0~K for KV$_3$Sb$_5$), significantly enhanced values of $T_{\rm c}$ are observed via the zero-bias conductance of SPCS ($\sim$4.2~K for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and $\sim$1.8~K for KV$_3$Sb$_5$), which become further enhanced in MPCS measurements ($\sim$5.0~K for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and $\sim$3.1~K for KV$_3$Sb$_5$). While the differential conductance curves from SPCS are described by a two-gap $s$-wave model, a single $s$-wave gap reasonably captures the MPCS data, likely due to a diminishing spectral weight of the other gap. The enhanced superconductivity probably arises from local strain caused by the point-contact, which also leads to the evolution from two-gap to single-gap behaviors in different point-contacts. Our results demonstrate highly strain-sensitive superconductivity in kagome metals CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and KV$_3$Sb$_5$, which may be harnessed in the manipulation of possible Majorana zero modes.

Superconductivity modulated by structural phase transitions in pressurized vanadium-based kagome metals

The interplay of superconductivity with electronic and structural instabilities on the kagome lattice provides a fertile ground for the emergence of unusual phenomena. The vanadium-based kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) exhibit superconductivity on an almost ideal kagome lattice, with the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ forming two domes upon pressure-tuning. The first dome arises from the competition between superconductivity and a charge-density-wave, whereas the origin for the second dome remains unclear. Herein, we show that the appearance of the second superconducting dome in KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ is associated with transitions from hexagonal $P6$/$mmm$ to monoclinic $P2$/$m$ structures, evidenced by splitting of structural peaks from synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction experiments and imaginary phonon frequencies in first-principles calculations. In KV$_3$Sb$_5$, transition to an orthorhombic $Pmmm$ structure is further observed for pressure $p\gtrsim20$ GPa, and is correlated with the strong suppression of $T_{\rm c}$ in the second superconducting dome. Our findings indicate distortions of the crystal structure modulates superconductivity in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ under pressure, providing a platform to study the emergence of superconductivity in the presence of multiple structural instabilities.

Absence of local moments in the kagome metal KV3Sb5 as determined by muon spin spectroscopy

We have carried out muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements on the newly discovered kagome metal KV3Sb5, and find a local field dominated by weak magnetic disorder which we associate with the nuclear moments present, and a modest temperature dependence which tracks the bulk magnetic susceptibility. We find no evidence for the existence of V4+ local moments, suggesting that the physics underlying the recently reported giant unconventional anomalous Hall effect in this material warrants further studies.

Antiferromagnetism and crystalline-electric field excitations in tetragonal NaCeO2

We investigate the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and crystalline-electric field of tetragonal, $I4_1/amd$, NaCeO$_2$. In this compound, Ce$^{3+}$ ions form a tetragonally elongated diamond lattice coupled by antiferromagnetic interactions ($Θ_{CW} = -7.69$ K) that magnetically order below $T_N = 3.18$ K. The Ce$^{3+}$ $J = 5/2$ crystalline-electric field-split multiplet is studied via inelastic neutron scattering to parameterize a $J_{eff} = 1/2$ ground state doublet comprised of states possessing mixed $|m_z \rangle$ character. Neutron powder diffraction data reveal the onset of $A$-type antiferromagnetism with $μ=0.57(2)$ $μ_B$ moments aligned along the $c$-axis. The magnetic structure is consistent with the expectations of a frustrated Heisenberg $J_1$-$J_2$ model on the elongated diamond lattice with effective exchange values $J_1 > 4 J_2$ and $J_1 > 0$.

Controlling Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the skyrmion host candidates FePd$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Mo$_3$N

Ferromagnets crystallizing in structures described by chiral cubic space groups, including compounds with the B20 or $β$-Mn structures, are known to host long-period chiral spin textures such as skyrmion lattices. These spin textures are stabilized by a competition between ferromagnetic exchange and antisymmetric Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange, which is enhanced by the spin-orbit coupling associated with high-atomic-number elements. For real-world application, it is desirable to find materials that can host compact skyrmion lattices at readily accessible temperatures. Here, we report on the crystal chemistry and magnetic phase diagrams of a family of compounds with the filled $β$-Mn structure, FePd$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Mo$_3$N with $T_C$ ranging from 175 K to 240 K. DC and AC magnetization measurements reveal magnetic phase diagrams consistent with the formation of a skyrmion pocket just below $T_C$. The magnitudes of ferromagnetic and DM exchanges are determined from the phase diagrams, demonstrating that the introduction of increasing amounts of Pt can be used to increase spin-orbit coupling in order to control the expected skyrmion lattice parameter between 140 nm and 65 nm while simultaneously increasing $T_C$.

Correlating magnetic structure and magnetotransport in semimetal thin films of Eu$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$TiO$_3$

We report on the evolution of the average and depth-dependent magnetic order in thin film samples of biaxially stressed and electron-doped EuTiO$_3$ for samples across a doping range $<$0.1 to 7.8 $\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. Under an applied in-plane magnetic field, the G-type antiferromagnetic ground state undergoes a continuous spin-flop phase transition into in-plane, field-polarized ferromagnetism. The critical field for ferromagnetism slightly decreases with an increasing number of free carriers, yet the field evolution of the spin-flop transition is qualitatively similar across the doping range. Unexpectedly, we observe interfacial ferromagnetism with saturated Eu$^{2+}$ moments at the substrate interface at low fields preceding ferromagnetic saturation throughout the bulk of the degenerate semiconductor film. We discuss the implications of these findings for the unusual magnetotransport properties of this compound.

CsV$_3$Sb$_5$: a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological kagome metal with a superconducting ground state

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T$_{c} = 2.5$K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), which categorize CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level ($E_F$), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high temperature charge density wave-like instability. The implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Field-tunable quantum disordered ground state in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Antiferromagnetically coupled S=1/2 spins on an isotropic triangular lattice is the paradigm of frustrated quantum magnetism, but structurally ideal realizations are rare. Here we investigate NaYbO$_2$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments with no inherent site disorder. No signatures of conventional magnetic order appear down to 50 mK, strongly suggesting a quantum spin liquid ground state. We observe a two-peak specific heat and a nearly quadratic temperature dependence in accord with expectations for a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid. Application of a magnetic field strongly perturbs the quantum disordered ground state and induces a clear transition into a collinear ordered state consistent with a long-predicted up-up-down structure for a triangular lattice XXZ Hamiltonian driven by quantum fluctuations. The observation of spin liquid signatures in zero field and quantum-induced ordering in intermediate fields in the same compound demonstrate an intrinsically quantum disordered ground state. We conclude that NaYbO$_2$ is a model, versatile platform for exploring spin liquid physics with full tunability of field and temperature.

Frustrated Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ model within the stretched diamond lattice of LiYbO2

We investigate the magnetic properties of LiYbO$_2$, containing a three-dimensionally frustrated, diamond-like lattice via neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. The stretched diamond network of Yb$^{3+}$ ions in LiYbO$_2$ enters a long-range incommensurate, helical state with an ordering wave vector ${\bf{k}} = (0.384, \pm 0.384, 0)$ that "locks-in" to a commensurate ${\bf{k}} = (1/3, \pm 1/3, 0)$ phase under the application of a magnetic field. The spiral magnetic ground state of LiYbO$_2$ can be understood in the framework of a Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ Hamiltonian on a stretched diamond lattice, where the propagation vector of the spiral is uniquely determined by the ratio of $J_2/|J_1|$. The pure Heisenberg model, however, fails to account for the relative phasing between the Yb moments on the two sites of the bipartite lattice, and this detail as well as the presence of an intermediate, partially disordered, magnetic state below 1 K suggests interactions beyond the classical Heisenberg description of this material.

High order magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet $α$-NaMnO$_2$

Here we report on the formation of two and three magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet $α$-NaMnO$_2$, where the single-ion, uniaxial anisotropy inherent to the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in this material provides a binding mechanism capable of stabilizing higher order magnon bound states. While such states have long remained elusive in studies of antiferromagnetic chains, neutron scattering data presented here demonstrate that higher order $n>2$ composite magnons exist, and, specifically, that a weak three-magnon bound state is detected below the antiferromagnetic ordering transition of NaMnO$_2$. We corroborate our findings with exact numerical simulations of a one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with easy-axis anisotropy using matrix-product state techniques, finding a good quantitative agreement with the experiment. These results establish $α$-NaMnO$_2$ as a unique platform for exploring the dynamics of composite magnon states inherent to a classical antiferromagnetic spin chain with Ising-like single ion anisotropy.

Monopole-limited nucleation of magnetism in Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We present an in-depth analysis of muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under the effect of the Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$ isovalent and diamagnetic substitution as well as of external pressure. Our results evidence an anomalously slow increase of the magnetic volume fraction upon decreasing temperature only for stoichiometric Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, pointing towards highly unconventional properties of the magnetic phase developing therein. We argue that magnetism in Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ develops based on the nucleation of magnetic droplets at $T_{N}$, whose successive growth is limited by the need of a continuous generation of magnetic hedgehog monopoles.

Spin excitations in the frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Here we present a neutron scattering-based study of magnetic excitations and magnetic order in NaYbO$_2$ under the application of an external magnetic field. The crystal electric field-split $J = 7/2$ multiplet structure is determined, revealing a mixed $|m_z>$ ground state doublet and is consistent with a recent report Ding et al. [1]. Our measurements further suggest signatures of exchange effects in the crystal field spectrum, manifested by a small splitting in energy of the transition into the first excited doublet. The field-dependence of the low-energy magnetic excitations across the transition from the quantum disordered ground state into the fluctuation-driven ordered regime is analyzed. Signs of a first-order phase transition into a noncollinear ordered state are revealed at the upper-field phase boundary of the ordered regime, and higher order magnon scattering, suggestive of strong magnon-magnon interactions, is resolved within the previously reported $up-up-down$ phase. Our results reveal a complex phase diagram of field-induced order and spin excitations within NaYbO$_2$ and demonstrate the dominant role of quantum fluctuations cross a broad range of fields within its interlayer frustrated triangular lattice.

Structural evolution and skyrmionic phase diagram of the lacunar spinel GaMo$_4$Se$_8$

In the $AB_4Q_8$ lacunar spinels, the electronic structure is described on the basis of inter- and intra-cluster interactions of tetrahedral $B_4$ clusters, and tuning these can lead to myriad fascinating electronic and magnetic ground states. In this work, we employ magnetic measurements, synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering, and first-principles electronic structure calculations to examine the coupling between structural and magnetic phase evolution in GaMo$_4$Se$_8$, including the emergence of a skyrmionic regime in the magnetic phase diagram. We show that the competition between two distinct Jahn-Teller distortions of the room temperature cubic $F\overline{4}3m$ structure leads to the coexistence of the ground state $R3m$ phase and a metastable $Imm2$ phase. The magnetic properties of these two phases are computationally shown to be very different, with the $Imm2$ phase exhibiting uniaxial ferromagnetism and the $R3m$ phase hosting a complex magnetic phase diagram including equilibrium Néel--type skyrmions stable from nearly $T$ = 28 K down to $T$ = 2 K, the lowest measured temperature. The large change in magnetic behavior induced by a small structural distortion reveals that GaMo$_4$Se$_8$ is an exciting candidate material for tuning unconventional magnetic properties $via$ mechanical means.

Symmetry-resolved two-magnon excitations in a strong spin-orbit-coupled bilayer antiferromagnet

We used a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy and spin wave calculations to study magnetic excitations in the strong spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) bilayer perovskite antiferromagnet $Sr_3Ir_2O_7$. We observed two broad Raman features at ~ 800 $cm^{-1}$ and ~ 1400 $cm^{-1}$ arising from magnetic excitations. Unconventionally, the ~ 800 $cm^{-1}$ feature is fully symmetric ($A_{1g}$) with respect to the underlying tetragonal ($D_{4h}$) crystal lattice which, together with its broad line shape, definitively rules out the possibility of a single magnon excitation as its origin. In contrast, the ~ 1400 $cm^{-1}$ feature shows up in both the $A_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ channels. From spin wave and two-magnon scattering cross-section calculations of a tetragonal bilayer antiferromagnet, we identified the ~ 800 $cm^{-1}$ (~ 1400 $cm^{-1}$) feature as two-magnon excitations with pairs of magnons from the zone-center $Γ$ point (zone-boundary van Hove singularity X point). We further found that this zone-center two-magnon scattering is unique to bilayer perovskite magnets which host an optical branch in addition to the acoustic branch, as compared to their single layer counterparts. This zone-center two-magnon mode is distinct in symmetry from the time-reversal symmetry broken spin wave gap and phase mode proposed to explain the ~ 92 meV (742 $cm^{-1}$) gap in RIXS magnetic excitation spectra of $Sr_3Ir_2O_7$.

Unconventional Hund Metal in a Weak Itinerant Ferromagnet

The physics of weak itinerant ferromagnets is challenging due to their small magnetic moments and the ambiguous role of local interactions governing their electronic properties, many of which violate Fermi liquid theory. While magnetic fluctuations play an important role in the materials' unusual electronic states, the nature of these fluctuations and the paradigms through which they arise remain debated. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to study magnetic fluctuations in the canonical weak itinerant ferromagnet MnSi. Data reveal that short-wavelength magnons continue to propagate until a mode crossing predicted for strongly interacting quasiparticles is reached, and the local susceptibility peaks at a coherence energy predicted for a correlated Hund metal by first-principles many-body theory. Scattering between electrons and orbital and spin fluctuations in MnSi can be understood at the local level to generate non-Fermi liquid character. These results provide crucial insight into the role of interorbital Hund's exchange within the broader class of enigmatic multiband itinerant, weak ferromagnets.

Atomic-scale fragmentation and collapse of antiferromagnetic order in a doped Mott insulator

Disentangling the relationship between the insulating state with a charge gap and the magnetic order in an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator remains difficult due to inherent phase separation as the Mott state is perturbed. Measuring magnetic and electronic properties at the atomic length scales would provide crucial insight, but this is yet to be experimentally achieved. Here we use spectroscopic-imaging spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) to visualize periodic spin-resolved modulations originating from the AF order in a relativistic Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, and study these as a function of doping. We find that near insulator-to-metal transition (IMT), the long-range AF order melts into a fragmented state with short-range AF correlations. Crucially, we discover that the short-range AF order is locally uncorrelated with the observed spectral gap magnitude. This strongly suggests that short range AF correlations are unlikely to be the culprit behind inhomogeneous gap closing and the emergence of pseudogap regions near IMT. Our work establishes SP-STM as a powerful tool for revealing atomic-scale magnetic information in complex oxides.

Evolution of structure and magnetism across the metal-insulator transition in the pyrochlore iridate $($Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_x)_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We report on the evolution of the thermal metal-insulator transition in polycrystalline samples of Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ upon hole-doping via substitution of Ca$^{2+}$ for Nd$^{3+}$. Ca substitution mediates a filling-controlled Mott-like transition with minimal resolvable structural changes and without altering site symmetry. Local structure confirms that Ca substitution does not result in local chemical phase separation, and absorption spectroscopy establishes that Ir cations maintain a spin-orbit entangled electronic configuration. The metal-insulator transition coincides with antiferromagnetic ordering on the Ir sublattice for all measured samples, and both decrease in onset temperature with Ca content. Weak low-temperature upturns in susceptibility and resistivity for samples with high Ca content suggest that Nd sublattice antiferromagnetism continues to couple to carriers in the metallic regime.

Disordered dimer state in electron-doped Sr$_{3}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Spin excitations are explored in the electron-doped spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. As this bilayer square lattice system is doped into the metallic regime, long-range antiferromagnetism vanishes, yet a spectrum of gapped spin excitation remains. Excitation lifetimes are strongly damped with increasing carrier concentration, and the energy integrated spectral weight becomes nearly momentum independent as static spin order is suppressed. Local magnetic moments, absent in the parent system, grow in metallic samples and approach values consistent with one $J=\frac{1}{2}$ impurity per electron doped. Our combined data suggest that the magnetic spectra of metallic (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are best described by excitations out of a disordered dimer state.

Floating zone growth of α-Na$_{0.90}$MnO$_2$ single crystals

Single crystal growth of α-Na$_x$MnO$_2$ (x = 0.90) is reported via the floating zone technique. The conditions required for stable growth and intergrowth-free crystals are described along with the results of trials under alternate growth atmospheres. Chemical and structural characterizations of the resulting α-Na$_{0.90}$MnO$_2$ crystals are performed using ICP-AES, NMR, XANES, XPS, and neutron diffraction measurements. As a layered transition metal oxide with large ionic mobility and strong correlation effects, α-Na$_x$MnO$_2$ is of interest to many communities, and the implications of large volume, high purity, single crystal growth are discussed.

Interface-driven ferromagnetism within the quantum wells of a rare earth titanate superlattice

Here we present polarized neutron reflectometry measurements exploring thin film heterostructures comprised of a strongly correlated Mott state, GdTiO$_3$, embedded with SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells. Our results reveal that the net ferromagnetism inherent to the Mott GdTiO$_3$ matrix propagates into the nominally nonmagnetic SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells and tracks the magnetic order parameter of the host Mott insulating matrix. Beyond a well thickness of 5 SrO layers, the magnetic moment within the wells is dramatically suppressed, suggesting that quenched well magnetism comprises the likely origin of quantum critical magnetotransport in this thin film architecture. Our data demonstrate that the interplay between proximate exchange fields and polarity induced carrier densities can stabilize extended magnetic states within SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells.

Strain-activated structural anisotropy in BaFe2As2

High-resolution single crystal neutron diffraction measurements are presented probing the magnetostructural response to uniaxial pressure in the iron pnictide parent system BaFe2As2. Scattering data reveal a strain-activated, anisotropic broadening of nuclear Bragg reflections, which increases upon cooling below the resolvable onset of global orthorhombicity. This anisotropy in lattice coherence continues to diverge until a lower temperature scale---the first-order onset of antiferromagnetism---is reached. Our data suggest that antiferromagnetism and strong magnetoelastic coupling drive the strain-activated lattice response in this material and that the development of anisotropic lattice coherence under strain is the physical origin for the anomalous nematic anisotropy in this compound.

Structural evolution and electronic properties of (Sr1-xCax)2-yIrO4+z spin-orbit assisted insulators

The effect of isoelectronic substitution within single crystals of (Sr1-xCax)2-yIrO4+z is explored. The nominal n=1 Ruddlesden-Popper phase with y=0, z=0 remains stable from x=0 until x=0.11, where the antiferromagnet spin-orbit Mott insulating state persists. An increase in the saturated moment is observed with increasing Ca-substitution, suggesting a modified coupling of the in-plane moments relative to the in-plane rotation of IrO6 octahedra. Beyond x=0.11, the x=1/4, y=0, z=1/2 structural phase Sr3CaIr2O9, consisting of a three-dimensional network of corner sharing octahedra, begins to intermix and eventually nucleates phase pure crystals at higher starting Ca-content. An insulating, nonmagnetic ground state is observed in this phase attributable to the J=0 state and is consistent with a recent powder study. At higher Ca-concentrations beyond x = 0.75, crystals begin to stabilize in the y=1/3, z=0 quasi one-dimensional Ca5Ir3O12 structure. The low temperature transport in this chain-based structure is well described via variable range hopping, and an antiferromagnetic ordering transition appears below T$_N=9$ K. Our data provide a detailed mapping of the electronic and structural properties accessible as the structural framework of the canonical spin orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 is destabilized via isovalent chemical substitution.

Structural investigation of the bilayer iridate Sr3Ir2O7

A complete structural solution of the bilayer iridate compound Sr3Ir2O7 presently remains outstanding. Previously reported structures for this compound vary and all fail to explain weak structural violations observed in neutron scattering measurements as well as the presence of a net ferromagnetic moment in the basal plane. In this paper, we present single crystal neutron diffraction and rotational anisotropy second harmonic generation measurements unveiling a lower, monoclinic symmetry inherent to Sr3Ir2O7 . Combined with density functional theory, our measurements identify the correct structural space group as No. 15 (C2/c) and provide clarity regarding the local symmetry of Ir 4+ cations within this spin-orbit Mott material.

First-order melting of a weak spin-orbit Mott insulator into a correlated metal

The electronic phase diagram of the weak spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr(1-x)Lax)3Ir2O7 is determined via an exhaustive experimental study. Upon doping electrons via La substitution, an immediate collapse in resistivity occurs along with a narrow regime of nanoscale phase separation comprised of antiferromagnetic, insulating regions and paramagnetic, metallic puddles persisting until x~0.04. Continued electron doping results in an abrupt, first-order phase boundary where the Neel state is suppressed and a homogenous, correlated, metallic state appears with an enhanced spin susceptibility and local moments. As the metallic state is stabilized, a weak structural distortion develops and suggests a competing instability with the parent spin-orbit Mott state.

The influence of electron-doping on the ground state of (Sr{1-x}La{x})2IrO4

The evolution of the electronic properties of electron-doped (Sr{1-x}La{x})2IrO4 is experimentally explored as the doping limit of La is approached. As electrons are introduced, the electronic ground state transitions from a spin-orbit Mott phase into an electronically phase separated state, where long-range magnetic order vanishes beyond x = 0.02 and charge transport remains percolative up to the limit of La substitution (x~0.06). In particular, the electronic ground state remains inhomogeneous even beyond the collapse of the parent state's long-range antiferromagnetic order, while persistent short-range magnetism survives up to the highest La-substitution levels. Furthermore, as electrons are doped into Sr2IrO4, we observe the appearance of a low temperature magnetic glass-like state intermediate to the complete suppression of antiferromagnetic order. Universalities and differences in the electron-doped phase diagrams of single layer and bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper strontium iridates are discussed.

Carrier localization and electronic phase separation in a doped spin-orbit driven Mott phase in Sr3(Ir1-xRux)2O7

Interest in many strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal oxide insulators stems from mapping their electronic structures to a J=1/2 Mott phase. One of the hopes is to establish their Mott parent states and explore these systems' potential of realizing novel electronic states upon carrier doping. However, once doped, little is understood regarding the role of their reduced Coulomb interaction U relative to their strongly correlated 3d-electron cousins. Here we show that, upon hole-doping a candidate J=1/2 Mott insulator, carriers remain localized within a nanoscale phase separated ground state. A percolative metal-insulator transition occurs with interplay between localized and itinerant regions, stabilizing an antiferromagnetic metallic phase beyond the critical region. Our results demonstrate a surprising parallel between doped 5d- and 3d-electron Mott systems and suggest either through the near degeneracy of nearby electronic phases or direct carrier localization that U is essential to the carrier response of this doped spin-orbit Mott insulator.

Complex structures of different CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ samples

The interplay between magnetism and crystal structures in three CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ samples is studied. For the nonmagnetic quenched crystals, different crystalline domains with varying lattice parameters are found, and three phases (orthorhombic, tetragonal, and collapsed tetragonal) coexist between T$_{S}$ = 95 K and 45 K. Annealing of the quenched crystals at 350°C leads to a strain relief through a large (~1.3 %) expansion of the c-parameter and a small (~0.2 %) contraction of the a-parameter, and to local ~0.2 Å displacements at the atomic-level. This annealing procedure results in the most homogeneous crystals for which the antiferromagnetic and orthorhombic phase transitions occur at T$_{N}$/T$_{S}$ = 168(1) K. In the 700°C-annealed crystal, an intermediate strain regime takes place, with tetragonal and orthorhombic structural phases coexisting between 80 to 120 K. The origin of such strong shifts in the transition temperatures are tied to structural parameters. Importantly, with annealing, an increase in the Fe-As length leads to more localized Fe electrons and higher local magnetic moments on Fe ions. Synergistic contribution of other structural parameters, including a decrease in the Fe-Fe distance, and a dramatic increase of the c-parameter, which enhances the Fermi surface nesting in CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, are also discussed.

Effect of carrier concentration on magnetism and magnetic order in the pyrochlore iridates

We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $μ$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K$ for Nd227 and $70 K$ for Sm227); both materials show heavily damped muon precession with a characteristic frequency near 9 MHz. The magnetic anomaly at $T_{M}$ in Nd227 is not significantly affected by the introduction of hole carriers by Ca-substitution in the conducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ samples, but the muon precession is fully suppressed for both.

Observation of metallic surface states in the strongly correlated Kitaev-Heisenberg candidate Na2IrO3

We report high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the honeycomb iridate Na2IrO3. Our measurements reveal the existence of a metallic surface band feature crossing the Fermi level with nearly linear dispersion and an estimated surface carrier density of 3.2 $\times$ 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, which has not been theoretically predicted or experimentally observed, and provides the first evidence for metallic behavior on the boundary of this material, whereas the bulk bands exhibit a robust insulating gap. We further show the lack of theoretically predicted Dirac cones at the $\overline{M}$ points of the surface Brillouin zone, which confirms the absence of a stacked quantum spin Hall phase in this material. Our data indicates that the surface ground state of this material is exotic and metallic, unlike as predicted in theory, and establishes Na2IrO3 as a rare example of a strongly correlated spin-orbit insulator with surface metallicity.

Short-range correlations in the magnetic ground state of Na4Ir3O8

The magnetic ground state of the hyper-kagome lattice in Na4Ir3O8 is explored via combined bulk magnetization, muon spin relaxation, and neutron scattering measurements. A short-range, frozen, state comprised of quasi-static moments develops below a characteristic temperature of T_F=6 K, revealing an inhomogeneous distribution of spins occupying the entirety of the sample volume. Quasi-static, short-range, spin correlations persist until at least 20 mK and differ substantially from the nominally dynamic response of a quantum spin liquid. Our data demonstrate that an inhomogeneous magnetic ground state arises in Na4Ir3O8 driven either by disorder inherent to the creation of the hyper-kagome lattice itself or stabilized via quantum fluctuations.

Spin correlated electronic state on the surface of a spin-orbit Mott system (Layered Iridates)

Novel phases of two dimensional electron systems resulting from new surface or interface modified electronic structures have generated significant interest in material science. We utilize photoemission spectroscopy to show that the near-surface electronic structure of a bulk insulating iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ lying near metal-Mott insulator transition exhibit weak metallicity signified by finite electronic spectral weight at the Fermi level. The surface electrons exhibit a unique spin structure resulting from an interplay of spin-orbit, Coulomb interaction and surface quantum magnetism, distinct from a topological insulator state. Our results suggest the experimental realization of a novel quasi two dimensional interacting electron surface ground state, opening the door for exotic quantum entanglement and transport phenomena in iridate-based oxide devices.

The evolution of antiferromagnetic susceptibility to uniaxial pressure in Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2

Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of T_N as Co-doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 on the first order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling between the onsets of the orthorhombic structural distortion and antiferromagnetism. Our findings place needed constraints on models exploring the nematic susceptibility of the bilayer pnictides in the tetragonal, paramagnetic regime.

Neutron scattering study of correlated phase behavior in Sr2IrO4

Neutron diffraction measurements are presented exploring the magnetic and structural phase behaviors of the candidate J$_{eff}=1/2$ Mott insulating iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Comparisons are drawn between the correlated magnetism in this single layer system and its bilayer analog Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ where both materials exhibit magnetic domains originating from crystallographic twinning and comparable moment sizes. Weakly temperature dependent superlattice peaks violating the reported tetragonal space group of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ are observed supporting the notion of a lower structural symmetry arising from a high temperature lattice distortion, and we use this to argue that moments orient along a unique in-plane axis demonstrating an orthorhombic symmetry in the resulting spin structure. Our results demonstrate that the correlated spin order and structural phase behaviors in both single and bilayer Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ systems are remarkably similar and suggest comparable correlation strengths in each system.

Observation of Dirac node formation and mass acquisition in a topological crystalline insulator

In the recently discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), topology and crystal symmetry intertwine to create surface states with a unique set of characteristics. Among the theoretical predictions for TCIs is the possibility of imparting mass to the massless Dirac fermions by breaking crystal symmetry, as well as a Lifshitz transition with a change of Fermi surface topology. Here we report high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy studies of a TCI, Pb1-xSnxSe. We demonstrate the formation of zero mass Dirac fermions protected by crystal symmetry and the mechanism of mass generation via symmetry breaking, which constitute the defining characteristics of TCIs. In addition, we show two distinct regimes of fermiology separated by a Van-Hove singularity at the Lifshitz transition point. Our work paves the way for engineering the Dirac band gap and realizing interaction-driven topological quantum phenomena in TCIs.

Effect of uniaxial strain on the structural and magnetic phase transitions in BaFe$_2$As$_2$

We report neutron scattering experiments probing the influence of uniaxial strain on both the magnetic and structural order parameters in the parent iron pnictide compound, BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Our data show that modest strain fields along the in-plane orthorhombic b-axis can affect significant changes in phase behavior simultaneous to the removal of structural twinning effects. As a result, we demonstrate in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ samples detwinned via uniaxial strain that the in-plane C$_4$ symmetry is broken by \textit{both} the structural lattice distortion \textit{and} long-range spin ordering at temperatures far above the nominal (strain-free), phase transition temperatures. Surprising changes in the magnetic order parameter of this system under relatively small strain fields also suggest the inherent presence of magnetic domains fluctuating above the strain-free ordering temperature in this material.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of phonon density of states in nanostructured Si1xGex thermoelectrics

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are utilized to explore relative changes in the generalized phonon density of states of nanocrystalline Si1xGex thermoelectric materials prepared via ball milling and hot-pressing techniques. Dynamic signatures of Ge clustering can be inferred from the data by referencing the resulting spectra to a density functional theoretical model assuming homogeneous alloying via the virtual-crystal approximation. Comparisons are also presented between as-milled Si nanopowder and bulk, polycrystalline Si where a preferential low-energy enhancement and lifetime broadening of the phonon density of states appear in the nanopowder. Negligible differences are however observed between the phonon spectra of bulk Si and hot pressed, nanostructured Si samples suggesting that changes to the single phonon dynamics above 4 meV play only a secondary role in the modified heat conduction of this compound.

Magnetic order and the electronic ground state in the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7

We report a combined muon spin relaxation/rotation, bulk magnetization, neutron scattering, and transport study of the electronic properties of the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. We observe the onset of strongly hysteretic behavior in the temperature dependent magnetization below 120 K, and an abrupt increase in the temperature dependent resistivity below 8 K. Zero field muon spin relaxation measurements show that the hysteretic magnetization is driven by a transition to a magnetically disordered state, and that below 8 K a complex magnetically ordered ground state sets in, as evidenced by the onset of heavily damped spontaneous muon precession. Our measurements point toward the absence of a true metal-to-insulator phase transition in this material and suggest that Nd2Ir2O7 lies either within or on the metallic side of the boundary of the Dirac semimetal regime within its topological phase diagram.

Magnetic Order in the Pyrochlore Iridates A2Ir2O7 (A = Y, Yb)

We present results from muon spin relaxation/rotation, magnetization, neutron scattering and transport measurements on polycrystalline samples of the pyrochlore iridates Y2Ir2O7 (Y-227) and Yb2Ir2O7 (Yb-227). Well-defined spontaneous oscillations of the muon asymmetry are observed together with hysteretic behavior in magnetization below 130 K in Yb-227, indicative of commensurate long-range magnetic order. Similar oscillations are observed in Y-227 below 150 K; however the onset of hysteretic magnetization at T = 190 K indicates a transition to an intermediate state lacking long-range order as observed in Nd-227. Our results also show that insulating members of the iridate family have nearly identical magnetic ground states, and that the presence of magnetic A-site species does not play any significant role in altering the ground state properties.

Magnetization and Hall effect studies on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7

We present magnetization and Hall effect measurements on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. Previous muon spin rotation measurements have shown that the system undergoes an unusual transition at T$_M$ = 110 K into a magnetic phase lacking long-range order, followed by a transition at T$_LRO$ = 6 K into a state with long-range magnetic order. We observe a small remnant magnetization when cycling through zero magnetic field at temperatures below T$_M$. Below T$_LRO$, this remnant magnetization increases sharply, and new hysteresis effects appear at a higher field B$_c$ = 2.5 T, while the Hall resistance develops a non-monotonic and hysteretic magnetic field dependence, with a maximum at B$_c$ and signatures of an anomalous Hall effect. The dependence on field sweep direction demonstrates a non-trivial transition into a magnetically ordered state with properties paralleling those of known spin-ice systems and suggests a spin reorientation transition across the metal insulator transition in the A-227 series.

One-dimensional channel for Dirac electrons in a 3D topological insulator

Topological insulators represent a new state of matter where the topological nature of the bulk bands dictates the existence of a surface state with unique properties. These materials are predicted to host exotic states such as Majorana Fermions and 1D chiral modes, many of which require a delicate tuning of the surface state properties near the Dirac point. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on the prototypical topological insulator Bi2Te3, we have discovered one-dimensional topographic stripes which induce spatially modulated changes in the electronic structure. Direct magnetic field measurements reveal a striped pattern of Landau level energies, which can be used to realize spatial regions with alternating filling fractions. When the chemical potential is properly tuned, the observed modulation would dictate the existence of topological 1D chiral modes at the boundaries between the stripes, and provide a platform for the experimental realization of 1D dissipationless quantum wires in topological insulators. Our discovery that the surface state dispersion is modulated over nanometer length scales by an intrinsic topographic route represents a new paradigm for controlling the properties of Dirac electrons.

Our combined results resolve scattering consistent with a high temperature magnetic phase that persists above 600 K, reorients at the previously defined $T_{AF}=280$ K, and coexists with an electronic ground state whose phase behavior suggests the formation of a fluctuating charge or orbital phase that freezes below $T^{*}\approx70$ K. Visualizing Landau levels of Dirac electrons in a one dimensional potential

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we have measured the response of Dirac electrons in a magnetic field to the presence of a well-defined smoothly varying 1D periodic potential. We find that the lower index Landau level energies reliably trace the potential variations, while the higher index levels appear surprisingly homogeneous. Modeling the effects of the periodic potential on the Landau level spectra, we show that the Landau level behavior encodes information on the spatial extent of the wavefunctions. The lower index maps reveal Landau level stripes, which would act as traps for chiral one-dimensional modes. Our findings have important implications for transport and magneto-resistance measurements in Dirac materials with engineered potential landscapes.

Zn-induced spin dynamics in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$

Spin fluctuations and the local spin susceptibility in isovalently Zn-substituted La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ ($x=0.25$, $y\approx0.01$) are measured via inelastic neutron scattering techniques. As Zn$^{2+}$ is substituted onto the Cu$^{2+}$-sites, an anomalous enhancement of the local spin susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}(ω)$ appears due to the emergence of a commensurate antiferromagnetic excitation centered at wave vector \textbf{Q}$=(π, π, 0)$ that coexists with the known incommensurate SDW excitations at \textbf{Q}$_{HK}=(π\pmδ,π), (π,π\pmδ)$. Our results support a picture of Zn-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations appearing through a local staggered polarization of Cu$^{2+}$-spins, and the simultaneous suppression of T$_c$ as AF fluctuations are slowed in proximity to Zn-impurities suggests the continued importance of high energy AF fluctuations at the far overdoped edge of superconductivity in the cuprates.

Electron-Spin Excitation Coupling in an Electron Doped Copper Oxide Superconductor

High-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in the copper oxides arises from electron or hole doping of their antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating parent compounds. The evolution of the AF phase with doping and its spatial coexistence with superconductivity are governed by the nature of charge and spin correlations and provide clues to the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity. Here we use a combined neutron scattering and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) to study the Tc evolution of electron-doped superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-delta obtained through the oxygen annealing process. We find that spin excitations detected by neutron scattering have two distinct modes that evolve with Tc in a remarkably similar fashion to the electron tunneling modes in STS. These results demonstrate that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity compete locally and coexist spatially on nanometer length scales, and the dominant electron-boson coupling at low energies originates from the electron-spin excitations.

Observation of novel interference patterns in Bi2-xFexTe3+d by Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy

In topological insulators (TI), strong spin-orbit coupling results in non-trivial scattering processes of the surface states, whose effects include suppressed back scattering1, 2, 3, 4 weak anti-localization5, 6 and the possibility of an exotic Kondo effect that mimics graphene7. Introducing time reversal breaking perturbations and establishing long-range magnetic order has been theorized to lead to the formation of quantized magnetoelectric phenomena8, fractionalized charge excitations, and the appearance of quantum wire states9. A key, elusive, step in exploring these and other novel electronic phases is the experimental observation of charge backscattering due to spin-flip processes at the surface of a magnetically-doped TI. Here we utilize Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) to probe the surface of a magnetically doped TI, Bi2-xFexTe3+d. Our measurements show the appearance of a hitherto unobserved channel of electronic backscattering along surface q-vector Γκ. By combining FT-STS with angle-resolved photoemission data, we identify the momentum space origins of the observed q-vectors, which on comparison to a model calculation are enhanced by spin-flip scattering. Our findings present compelling evidence for the first spatial and momentum resolved measurements of magnetic impurity induced backscattering in a prototypical TI.

The nature of the magnetic and structural phase transitions in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We present the results of an investigation of both the magnetic and structural phase transitions in a high quality single crystalline sample of the undoped, iron pnictide compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Both phase transitions are characterized via neutron diffraction measurements which reveal simultaneous, continuous magnetic and structural orderings with no evidence of hysteresis, consistent with a single second order phase transition. The onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order can be described by a simple power law dependence $ϕ(T)^2\propto(1-\frac{T}{T_N})^{2β}$ with $β=0.103\pm0.018$; a value near the $β=0.125$ expected for a two-dimensional Ising system. Biquadratic coupling between the structural and magnetic order parameters is also inferred along with evidence of three-dimensional critical scattering in this system.

Universal magnetic and structural behaviors in the iron arsenides

Commonalities among the order parameters of the ubiquitous antiferromagnetism present in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide high temperature superconductors are explored. Additionally, comparison is made between the well established two-dimensional Heisenberg-Ising magnet, K$_2$NiF$_4$ and iron arsenide systems residing at a critical point whose structural and magnetic phase transitions coincide. In particular, analysis is presented regarding two distinct classes of phase transition behavior reflected in the development of antiferromagnetic and structural order in the three main classes of iron arsenide superconductors. Two distinct universality classes are mirrored in their magnetic phase transitions which empirically are determined by the proximity of the coupled structural and magnetic phase transitions in these materials.
