Algebraic area enumeration of random walks on the honeycomb lattice

We study the enumeration of closed walks of given length and algebraic area on the honeycomb lattice. Using an irreducible operator realization of honeycomb lattice moves, we map the problem to a Hofstadter-like Hamiltonian and show that the generating function of closed walks maps to the grand partition function of a system of particles with exclusion statistics of order $g=2$ and an appropriate spectrum, along the lines of a connection previously established by two of the authors. Reinterpreting the results in terms of the standard Hofstadter spectrum calls for a mixture of $g=1$ (fermion) and $g=2$ exclusion whose physical meaning and properties require further elucidation. In this context we also obtain some unexpected Fibonacci sequences within the weights of the combinatorial factors appearing in the counting of walks.

Exclusion statistics for particles with a discrete spectrum

We formulate and study the microscopic statistical mechanics of systems of particles with exclusion statistics in a discrete one-body spectrum. The statistical mechanics of these systems can be expressed in terms of effective single-level grand partition functions obeying a generalization of the standard thermodynamic exclusion statistics equation of state. We derive explicit expressions for the thermodynamic potential in terms of microscopic cluster coefficients and show that the mean occupation numbers of levels satisfy a nesting relation involving a number of adjacent levels determined by the exclusion parameter. We apply the formalism to the harmonic Calogero model and point out a relation with the Ramanujan continued fraction identity and appropriate generalizations.

Hamiltonian and exclusion statistics approach to discrete forward-moving paths

We use a Hamiltonian (transition matrix) description of height-restricted Dyck paths on the plane in which generating functions for the paths arise as matrix elements of the propagator to evaluate the length and area generating function for paths with arbitrary starting and ending points, expressing it as a rational combination of determinants. Exploiting a connection between random walks and quantum exclusion statistics that we previously established, we express this generating function in terms of grand partition functions for exclusion particles in a finite harmonic spectrum and present an alternative, simpler form for its logarithm that makes its polynomial structure explicit.

Two anyons on the sphere: nonlinear states and spectrum

We study the energy spectrum of two anyons on the sphere in a constant magnetic field. Making use of rotational invariance we reduce the energy eigenvalue equation to a system of linear differential equations for functions of a single variable, a reduction analogous to separating center of mass and relative coordinates on the plane. We solve these equations by a generalization of the Frobenius method and derive numerical results for the energies of non-analytically derivable states.

Statistics of two-dimensional random walks, the "cyclic sieving phenomenon" and the Hofstadter model

We focus on the algebraic area probability distribution of planar random walks on a square lattice with $m_1$, $m_2$, $l_1$ and $l_2$ steps right, left, up and down. We aim, in particular, at the algebraic area generating function $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(Q)$ evaluated at $Q=e^{2ıπ\over q}$, a root of unity, when both $m_1-m_2$ and $l_1-l_2$ are multiples of $q$. In the simple case of staircase walks, a geometrical interpretation of $Z_{m,0,l,0}(e^\frac{2iπ}{q})$ in terms of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is illustrated. Then, an expression for $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(-1)$, which is relevant to the Stembridge's case, is proposed. Finally, the related problem of evaluating the n-th moments of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian in the commensurate case is addressed.

Exact results for the spectra of interacting bosons and fermions on the lowest Landau level

A system of N interacting bosons or fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic potential (or, equivalently, magnetic field) whose states are projected onto the lowest Landau level is considered. Generic expressions are derived for matrix elements of any interaction, in the basis of angular momentum eigenstates. For the fermion "ground state" (N=1 Laughlin state), this makes it possible to exactly calculate its energy all the way up to the mesoscopic regime N ~ 1000. It is also shown that for N = 3 and Coulomb interaction, several rational low-lying values of energy exist, for bosons and fermions alike.

Area distribution of two-dimensional random walks on a square lattice

The algebraic area probability distribution of closed planar random walks of length N on a square lattice is considered. The generating function for the distribution satisfies a recurrence relation in which the combinatorics is encoded. A particular case generalizes the q-binomial theorem to the case of three addends. The distribution fits the Lévy probability distribution for Brownian curves with its first-order 1/N correction quite well, even for N rather small.

Equation of State for Exclusion Statistics in a Harmonic Well

We consider the equations of state for systems of particles with exclusion statistics in a harmonic well. Paradygmatic examples are noninteracting particles obeying ideal fractional exclusion statistics placed in (i) a harmonic well on a line, and (ii) a harmonic well in the Lowest Landau Level (LLL) of an exterior magnetic field. We show their identity with (i) the Calogero model and (ii) anyons in the LLL of an exterior magnetic field and in a harmonic well.

Comment on " Thermodynamics of a One- Dimensional Ideal Gas with fractional Exclusion Statistics "

In a recent letter -Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 3331 (1995)-, the conclusion was reached that, in the one-dimensional Calogero model, only the second virial coefficient is affected by the statistical parameter $α$, where $α$ is related to the coupling constant $κ/ x_{ij}^2$ of the Calogero interaction by $κ=α(α+1)$. We argue that it is not so, i.e. all virial coefficients are affected, if the thermodynamic limit is properly taken.

ON THERMODYNAMICS OF MULTISPECIES ANYONS

We address the problem of multispecies anyons, i.e. particles of different species whose wave function is subject to anyonlike conditions. The cluster and virial coefficients are considered. Special attention is paid to the case of anyons in the lowest Landau level of a strong magnetic field, when it is possible (i) to prove microscopically the equation of state, in particular in terms of Aharonov-Bohm charge-flux composite systems, and (ii) to formulate the problem in terms of single-state statistical distributions.

Calogero Models for Distinguishable Particles

Motivated by topological bidimensional quantum models for distinguishable particles, and by Haldane's definition of mutual statistics for different species of particles, we propose a new class of one-dimensional $1/r_{ij}^2$ Calogero model with coupling constants $g_{ij}$ depending on the labels of the particles. We solve the groundstate problem, and show how to build some classes of excited states.

Ideal Anyons

A general introduction to the anyon model (braid group, Chern-Simons Lagrangian and Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonian formulations) is given. A review follows on exact results and possible ways of getting additional information, as mean field approach, perturbation theory, and projection on the lowest Landau level of an external magnetic field. One-Dimensional Statistical Mechanics for Identical Particles : The Calogero and Anyon Cases

The thermodynamic of particles with intermediate statistics interpolating between Bose and Fermi statistics is adressed in the simple case where there is one quantum number per particle. Such systems are essentially one-dimensional. As an illustration, one considers the anyon model restricted to the lowest Landau level of a strong magnetic field at low temperature, the generalization of this model to several particles species, and the one dimensional Calogero model. One reviews a unified algorithm to compute the statistical mechanics of these systems. It is pointed out that Haldane's generalization of the Pauli principle can be deduced from the anyon model in a strong magnetic field at low temperature.

Persistent Current of Free Electrons in the Plane

Predictions of Akkermans et al. are essentially changed when the Krein spectral displacement operator is regularized by means of zeta function. Instead of piecewise constant persistent current of free electrons on the plane one has a current which varies linearly with the flux and is antisymmetric with regard to all time preserving values of $α$ including $1/2$. Different self-adjoint extensions of the problem and role of the resonance are discussed.
