Statistics of two-dimensional random walks, the "cyclic sieving phenomenon" and the Hofstadter model

We focus on the algebraic area probability distribution of planar random walks on a square lattice with $m_1$, $m_2$, $l_1$ and $l_2$ steps right, left, up and down. We aim, in particular, at the algebraic area generating function $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(Q)$ evaluated at $Q=e^{2ıπ\over q}$, a root of unity, when both $m_1-m_2$ and $l_1-l_2$ are multiples of $q$. In the simple case of staircase walks, a geometrical interpretation of $Z_{m,0,l,0}(e^\frac{2iπ}{q})$ in terms of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is illustrated. Then, an expression for $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(-1)$, which is relevant to the Stembridge's case, is proposed. Finally, the related problem of evaluating the n-th moments of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian in the commensurate case is addressed.

Exact results for the spectra of interacting bosons and fermions on the lowest Landau level

A system of N interacting bosons or fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic potential (or, equivalently, magnetic field) whose states are projected onto the lowest Landau level is considered. Generic expressions are derived for matrix elements of any interaction, in the basis of angular momentum eigenstates. For the fermion "ground state" (N=1 Laughlin state), this makes it possible to exactly calculate its energy all the way up to the mesoscopic regime N ~ 1000. It is also shown that for N = 3 and Coulomb interaction, several rational low-lying values of energy exist, for bosons and fermions alike.

Area distribution of two-dimensional random walks on a square lattice

The algebraic area probability distribution of closed planar random walks of length N on a square lattice is considered. The generating function for the distribution satisfies a recurrence relation in which the combinatorics is encoded. A particular case generalizes the q-binomial theorem to the case of three addends. The distribution fits the Lévy probability distribution for Brownian curves with its first-order 1/N correction quite well, even for N rather small.

Anyon trajectories and the systematics of the three-anyon spectrum

We develop the concept of trajectories in anyon spectra, i.e., the continuous dependence of energy levels on the kinetic angular momentum. It provides a more economical and unified description, since each trajectory contains an infinite number of points corresponding to the same statistics. For a system of non-interacting anyons in a harmonic potential, each trajectory consists of two infinite straight line segments, in general connected by a nonlinear piece. We give the systematics of the three-anyon trajectories. The trajectories in general cross each other at the bosonic/fermionic points. We use the (semi-empirical) rule that all such crossings are true crossings, i.e.\ the order of the trajectories with respect to energy is opposite to the left and to the right of a crossing.

ON THERMODYNAMICS OF MULTISPECIES ANYONS

We address the problem of multispecies anyons, i.e. particles of different species whose wave function is subject to anyonlike conditions. The cluster and virial coefficients are considered. Special attention is paid to the case of anyons in the lowest Landau level of a strong magnetic field, when it is possible (i) to prove microscopically the equation of state, in particular in terms of Aharonov-Bohm charge-flux composite systems, and (ii) to formulate the problem in terms of single-state statistical distributions.
