Elastoresistivity of heavily hole doped 122 iron pnictides superconductors

Nematicity in the heavily hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors remains controversial. Sizeable nematic fluctuations and even nematic orders far from a magnetic instability were declared in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and its sister compounds. Here we report a systematic elastoresistance study of series of isovalent- and electron-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. We found divergent elastoresistance upon cooling for all the crystals along their [110] direction. The amplitude of elastoresistivity diverges if K is substituted with larger ions or if the system is driven towards a Lifshitz transition. However, we conclude none of them necessarily indicates an independent nematic critical point. Instead, the increased nematicity can be associated with another electronic criticality. In particular, we propose a mechanism how elastoresistivity is enhanced at a Lifshitz transition.

Renormalization approach to the superconducting Kondo model

An approach to bound states based on unitary transformations of Hamiltonians is presented. The method is applied to study the interaction between electrons in a BCS $s$-wave superconductor and a quantum spin. It is shown that known results from the t-matrix method and numerical studies are reproduced by this new method. As a main advantage, the method can straightforwardly be extended to study the topological properties of combined bound states in chains of many magnetic impurities. It also provides a uniform picture of the interplay between the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states and the Kondo singlet state.

Ubiquitous enhancement of nematic fluctuations across the phase diagram of iron based superconductors probed by the Nernst effect

The role of nematic fluctuations for unconventional superconductivity has been subject of intense discussions for many years. In iron-based superconductors, the most established probe for electronic-nematic fluctuations, i.e. the elastoresistivity seems to imply that superconductivity is reinforced by electronic-nematic fluctuations, since the elastoresistivity amplitude peaks at or close to optimal $T_C$. However, on the over-doped side of the superconducting dome, the diminishing elastoresistivity suggests a negligible importance in the mechanism of superconductivity. Here we introduce the Nernst coefficient as a genuine probe for electronic nematic fluctuations, and we show that the amplitude of the Nernst coefficient tracks the superconducting dome of two prototype families of iron-based superconductors, namely Rh-doped $BaFe_{2}As_{2}$ and Co-doped $LaFeAsO$. Our data thus provide fresh evidence that in these systems nematic fluctuations foster the superconductivity throughout the phase diagram.

Disorder-induced coupling of Weyl nodes in WTe$_2$

The finite coupling between Weyl nodes due to residual disorder is investigated by magnetotransport studies in WTe$_2$. The anisotropic scattering of quasiparticles is evidenced from classical and quantum transport measurements. A new theoretical approach using a real band structure is developed to calculate the dependence of the scattering anisotropy with the correlation length of the disorder. A comparison between theory and experiments reveals for the first time a short correlation length in WTe$_2$ ($ξ$~nm). This result implies a significant coupling between Weyl nodes and other bands, so that inter-node scattering strongly reduces topologically non-trivial properties, such as the chiral anomaly.

Theoretical approach to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in iron-based superconductors at the energy scale of the superconducting gap

We develop a phenomenological theory to predict the characteristic features of the momentum-dependent scattering amplitude in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the energy scale of the superconducting gap in iron-based superconductors. Taking into account all relevant orbital states as well as their specific content along the Fermi surface we evaluate the charge and spin dynamical structure factors for the compounds LaOFeAs and LiFeAs, based on tight-binding models which are fully consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. We find a characteristic intensity redistribution between charge and spin dynamical structure factors which discriminates between sign-reversing and sign-preserving quasiparticle excitations. Consequently, our results show that RIXS spectra can distinguish between $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ wave gap functions in the singlet pairing case. In addition, we find that an analogous intensity redistribution at small momenta can reveal the presence of a chiral $p$-wave triplet pairing.

Unconventional superconductivity and interaction induced Fermi surface reconstruction in the two-dimensional Edwards model

We study the competition between unconventional superconducting pairing and charge density wave (CDW) formation for the two-dimensional Edwards Hamiltonian at half filling, a very general two-dimensional transport model in which fermionic charge carriers couple to a correlated background medium. Using the projective renormalization method we find that a strong renormalization of the original fermionic band causes a new hole-like Fermi surface to emerge near the center of the Brillouin zone, before it eventually gives rise to the formation of a charge density wave. On the new, disconnected parts of the Fermi surface superconductivity is induced with a sign-changing order parameter. We discuss these findings in the light of recent experiments on iron-based oxypnictide superconductors.

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering as a Probe of the Phase and Excitations of the Order Parameter of Superconductors

The capability to probe the dispersion of elementary spin, charge, orbital, and lattice excitations has positioned resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the forefront of photon science. Here we develop the scattering theory for RIXS on superconductors, calculating its momentum-dependent scattering amplitude. Considering superconductors with different pairing symmetries, we show that the low-energy scattering is strongly affected by the superconducting gap and coherence factors. This establishes RIXS as a tool to disentangle pairing symmetries and to probe the elementary excitations of unconventional superconductors.

Interband Quasiparticle Scattering in Superconducting LiFeAs Reconciles Photoemission and Tunneling Measurements

Several angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies reveal a poorly nested Fermi surface of LiFeAs, far away from a spin density wave instability, and clear-cut superconducting gap anisotropies. On the other hand a very different, more nested Fermi surface and dissimilar gap anisotropies have been obtained from quasiparticle interference (QPI) data, which were interpreted as arising from intraband scattering within hole-like bands. Here we show that this ARPES-QPI paradox is completely resolved by interband scattering between the hole-like bands. The resolution follows from an excellent agreement between experimental quasiparticle scattering data and T-matrix QPI calculations (based on experimental band structure data), which allows disentangling interband and intraband scattering processes.

Quasiparticle interference in an iron-based superconductor

We develop a model for the effect of a magnetic field on quasiparticle interference in an iron-based superconductor. Recently, scanning tunneling experiments have been performed on Fe(Se,Te) to determine the relative sign of the superconducting gap from the magnetic-field dependence of quasiparticle scattering amplitudes. Using a simple two-band BCS model, we study three different cases of scattering in a spin-split spectrum. The dominant effect of a magnetic field in iron-based superconductors is caused by the Pauli limiting of conduction electrons. Thereby time reversal odd scattering is induced which enhances the sign-preserving and depresses the sign-reversing peaks in the quasiparticle interference patterns.
