Dissipationless transport signature of topological nodal lines

Topological materials, such as topological insulators or semimetals, usually not only reveal the nontrivial properties of their electronic wavefunctions through the appearance of stable boundary modes, but also through very specific electromagnetic responses. The anisotropic longitudinal magnetoresistance of Weyl semimetals, for instance, carries the signature of the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions. However for topological nodal line semimetals -- materials where the valence and conduction bands cross each other on one-dimensional curves in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone -- such a characteristic has been lacking. Here we report the discovery of a peculiar charge transport effect generated by topological nodal lines: a dissipationless transverse signal in the presence of coplanar electric and magnetic fields, which originates from a Zeeman-induced conversion of topological nodal lines into Weyl nodes under infinitesimally small magnetic fields. We evidence this dissipationless topological response in trigonal \ce{PtBi2} persisting up to room temperature, and unveil the extensive topological nodal lines in the band structure of this non-magnetic material. These findings provide a new pathway to engineer Weyl nodes by arbitrary small magnetic fields and reveal that bulk topological nodal lines can exhibit non-dissipative transport properties.

Crystal Growth, Exfoliation and Magnetic Properties of Quaternary Quasi-Two-Dimensional CuCrP$_2$S$_6$

We report optimized crystal growth conditions for the quaternary compound CuCrP$_2$S$_6$ by chemical vapor transport. Compositional and structural characterization of the obtained crystals were carried out by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. CuCrP$_2$S$_6$ is structurally closely related to the $M_2$P$_2$S$_6$ family ($M$: transition metal), which contains several compounds that are under investigation as 2D magnets. As-grown crystals exhibit a plate-like, layered morphology as well as a hexagonal habitus. We present successful exfoliation of such as-grown crystals down to thicknesses of 2.8 nm corresponding to 4 layers. CuCrP$_2$S$_6$ crystallizes in the monoclinic space group $C2/c$. Magnetization measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic ground state with $T_\textrm{N} \approx 30$ K and a positive Curie-Weiss temperature in agreement with dominant ferromagnetic intralayer coupling. Specific heat measurements confirm this magnetic phase transition and the magnetic order is suppressed in an external magnetic field of about 6 T (8 T) applied parallel (perpendicular) to the $ab$ plane. At higher temperatures between 140-200 K additional broad anomalies associated with structural changes accompanying antiferroelectric ordering are detected in our specific heat studies.

Elastoresistivity of heavily hole doped 122 iron pnictides superconductors

Nematicity in the heavily hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors remains controversial. Sizeable nematic fluctuations and even nematic orders far from a magnetic instability were declared in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and its sister compounds. Here we report a systematic elastoresistance study of series of isovalent- and electron-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. We found divergent elastoresistance upon cooling for all the crystals along their [110] direction. The amplitude of elastoresistivity diverges if K is substituted with larger ions or if the system is driven towards a Lifshitz transition. However, we conclude none of them necessarily indicates an independent nematic critical point. Instead, the increased nematicity can be associated with another electronic criticality. In particular, we propose a mechanism how elastoresistivity is enhanced at a Lifshitz transition.

Mechanical control of physical properties in the van der Waals ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6 via application of electric current

Cr2Ge2Te6 is a van der Waals ferromagnet with a Curie temperature at 66 K. Here we report a swift change in the magnetic ground state upon application of small DC electric current, a giant yet anisotropic magnetoelectric effect, and a sharp, lattice-driven quantum switching manifested in the I-V characteristic of the bulk single-crystal Cr2Ge2Te6. At the heart of these observed phenomena is a newly uncovered, strongly anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling that enables strongly anisotropic responses of the lattice to application of electric current and/or magnetic field, thus the exotic phenomena in Cr2Ge2Te6. Such a rare mechanical tunability in the magnetic semiconductors promises tantalizing prospects for unique functional materials and devices.

Ubiquitous enhancement of nematic fluctuations across the phase diagram of iron based superconductors probed by the Nernst effect

The role of nematic fluctuations for unconventional superconductivity has been subject of intense discussions for many years. In iron-based superconductors, the most established probe for electronic-nematic fluctuations, i.e. the elastoresistivity seems to imply that superconductivity is reinforced by electronic-nematic fluctuations, since the elastoresistivity amplitude peaks at or close to optimal $T_C$. However, on the over-doped side of the superconducting dome, the diminishing elastoresistivity suggests a negligible importance in the mechanism of superconductivity. Here we introduce the Nernst coefficient as a genuine probe for electronic nematic fluctuations, and we show that the amplitude of the Nernst coefficient tracks the superconducting dome of two prototype families of iron-based superconductors, namely Rh-doped $BaFe_{2}As_{2}$ and Co-doped $LaFeAsO$. Our data thus provide fresh evidence that in these systems nematic fluctuations foster the superconductivity throughout the phase diagram.

A unified phase diagram of F-doped LaFeAsO by means of NMR and NQR parameters

We present $^{75}$As Nuclear Magnetic and Quadrupole Resonance results (NMR, NQR) on a new set of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ polycrystalline samples. Improved synthesis conditions led to more homogenized samples with better control of the fluorine content. The structural$\equiv$nematic, magnetic, and superconducting transition temperatures have been determined by NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate and AC susceptibility measurements. The so-determined phase diagram deviates from the published one especially for low F-doping concentrations. However, if the doping level is determined from the NQR spectra, both phase diagrams can be reconciled. The absence of bulk coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity and a nanoscale separation into low-doping-like and high-doping-like regions have been confirmed. Additional frequency dependent intensity, spin-spin, and spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements on underdoped samples at the boundary of magnetism and superconductivity indicate that orthorhombicity and magnetism originate from the low-doping-like regions, and superconductivity develops at first in the high-doping-like regions.

Disorder-induced coupling of Weyl nodes in WTe$_2$

The finite coupling between Weyl nodes due to residual disorder is investigated by magnetotransport studies in WTe$_2$. The anisotropic scattering of quasiparticles is evidenced from classical and quantum transport measurements. A new theoretical approach using a real band structure is developed to calculate the dependence of the scattering anisotropy with the correlation length of the disorder. A comparison between theory and experiments reveals for the first time a short correlation length in WTe$_2$ ($ξ$~nm). This result implies a significant coupling between Weyl nodes and other bands, so that inter-node scattering strongly reduces topologically non-trivial properties, such as the chiral anomaly.

Evolution of the nematic susceptibility in LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO

The identification of electronic nematicity across series of iron-based superconductors raises the question of its relationship with superconductivity and other ordered states. Here, we report a systematic elastoresistivity study on LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO single crystals, which have well separated structural and magnetic transition lines. All crystals show Curie-Weiss-like nematic susceptibility in the tetragonal phase. The extracted nematic temperature is monotonically suppressed upon cobalt doping, and changes sign around the optimal doping level, indicating a possible nematic quantum critical point beneath the superconducting dome. The amplitude of nematic susceptibility shows a peculiar double-peak feature. This could be explained by a combined effect of different contributions to the nematic susceptibility, which are amplified at separated doping levels of LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO.

Magnetically-induced local lattice anomalies and low-frequency nematic fluctuations in the Mott insulator La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$

We report a study of the Mott insulator La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ by means of $^{139}$La nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra evidence a single La site in the paramagnetic phase and two inequivalent La sites, La1 and La2, in the antiferromagnetically-ordered phase (Néel temperature $T_{\rm{N}} \simeq 90$ K). These two sites are characterized by different quadrupole couplings, indicative of distinct lattice and/or charge configurations likely segregated in domains. The dependence of the quadrupole coupling for La2 on temperature suggests that the magnetic order parameter drives the structural distortion. The nuclear spin-lattice and transverse relaxation rates, $1/T_1$ and $1/T_2$, evidence fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase with characteristic frequencies well below the Heisenberg exchange frequency, likely associated with nematic fluctuations.

Separate tuning of nematicity and spin fluctuations to unravel the origin of superconductivity in FeSe

The interplay of orbital and spin degrees of freedom is the fundamental characteristic in numerous condensed matter phenomena, including high temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquids, and topological semimetals. In iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), this causes superconductivity to emerge in the vicinity of two other instabilities: nematic and magnetic. Unveiling the mutual relationship among nematic order, spin fluctuations, and superconductivity has been a major challenge for research in FeSCs, but it is still controversial. Here, by carrying out 77Se nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on FeSe single crystals, doped by cobalt and sulfur that serve as control parameters, we demonstrate that the superconducting transition temperature Tc increases in proportion to the strength of spin fluctuations, while it is independent of the nematic transition temperature Tnem. Our observation therefore directly implies that superconductivity in FeSe is essentially driven by spin fluctuations in the intermediate coupling regime, while nematic fluctuations have a marginal impact on Tc.

Magnetic Anisotropy and Low Field Magnetic Phase Diagram of Quasi Two-Dimensional Ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

In this work we present a comprehensive investigation on magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional layered honeycomb system Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Using magnetization and specific heat measurements under magnetic field applied along two crystallographic directions we obtain the magnetic phase diagram for both directions. Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ is a ferromagnet with a Curie temperature $T_C=65$ K and exhibits an easy magnetization axis perpendicular to the structural layers in the $ab$-plane. Under magnetic fields applied parallel to the hard plane $ab$ below the magnetic saturation, a downturn with an onset temperature $T\textrm{*}$ is observed in the temperature dependent magnetization curve. $T\textrm{*}$ shows a monotonous shift towards lower temperatures with increasing field. The nature of this anisotropic and specific behavior for fields in the hard plane is discussed as an interplay among field, temperature and effective magnetic anisotropy. Similarities to structurally related compounds such as CrX$_3$ (X = Br, I) hint towards a universality of this behavior in ferromagnetic quasi two-dimensional honeycomb materials.

Hall-plot of the phase diagram for Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and doping dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co doping. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co doping. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

Crystal growth and the electronic phase diagram of the 4$d$ doped Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As in comparison with 3$d$ doped Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

Single crystals of Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$As with T = Co, Rh have been grown using a self-flux technique. The crystals were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and electronic transport with particular focus on the Rh-doped samples. Measurements of the specific heat and ARPES were conducted exemplarily for the optimally doped compositions. The spin-density wave transition (SDW) observed for samples with low Rh concentration ($0\,\leq\,x\,\leq\,0.013$) is fully suppressed in the optimally doped sample. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) is enhanced from $10$~K in Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs to $21$~K in the optimally doped sample ($x$ = 0.019) of the Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As series and decreases for the overdoped compounds, revealing a typical shape for the superconducting part of the electronic phase diagram. Remarkably, the phase diagram is almost identical to that of Co-doped Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs, suggesting a generic phase diagram for both dopants.

Intrinsic pinning and the critical current scaling of clean epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films

We report on the transport properties of clean, epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films prepared on Fe-buffered MgO (001) single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Near Tc a steep slope of the upper critical field for H||ab was observed (74.1 T/K), leading to a very short out-of-plane coherence length, ξc, of 0.2 nm, yielding 2ξc(0) approximately 0.4 nm. This value is shorter than the interlayer distance (0.605 nm) between Fe-Se(Te) planes, indicative of modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the c-axis. An inverse correlation between the power law exponent N of the electric field-current density (E-J) curve and the critical current density, Jc, has been observed at 4 K, when the orientation of H was close to the ab-plane. These results prove the presence of intrinsic pinning in Fe(Se,Te). A successful scaling of the angular dependent Jc and the corresponding exponent N can be realized by the anisotropic Ginzburg Landau approach with appropriate Γvalues 2~3.5. The temperature dependence of Γbehaves almost identically to that of the penetration depth anisotropy.

75As NMR-NQR study in superconducting LiFeAs

We report results of 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) experiments as well as 7Li NMR on different samples of self flux grown LiFeAs and 5 % Co doped LiFeAs single crystals, and a polycrystalline LiFeAs sample. We were able to distinguish the samples by their slightly different quadrupole frequencies, $ν_Q$, which is a direct measure of the electric field gradient (EFG) at the As site. Interestingly, samples with a large quadrupole frequency appear to show a different Knight shift and spin lattice relaxation in the superconducting state from those with a lower $ν_Q$, yet all the samples are clearly superconducting. For sample S1 which has the largest $ν_Q$, we find constant Knight shift K across Tc for a certain direction of the magnetic field and a peculiar upturn of the NQR spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 below Tc. In contrast, samples with a lower $ν_Q$ exhibit the expected behavior for a singlet superconductor: a drop of K and 1/T1 for both NMR and NQR below Tc. Our results show that already tiny changes in stoichiometry uncovered by slightly different NQR frequencies lead to very different behavior of the NMR parameters in the superconducting state of LiFeAs. Different possibilities will be discussed which may explain the contrasting behavior.

Strong Competition of Superconducting and Magnetic Order Parameters in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2

We study the interplay of magnetic and superconducting order in single crystalline hole doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 using muon spin relaxation. We find microscopic coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity. In a strongly underdoped specimen the two forms of order coexist without any measurable reduction of the ordered magnetic moment by superconductivity, while in a nearly optimally doped sample the ordered magnetic moment is strongly suppressed below the superconducting transition temperature. This coupling can be well described within the framework of an effective two-band model incorporating inter- and intra-band interactions. In optimally doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 we observe no traces of static or dynamic magnetism and the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is consistent with two s-wave gaps without nodes.

Generic Fe buffer layers for Fe-based superconductors: Epitaxial FeSe1-xTex thin films

Biaxially textured FeSe1-xTex films have been realized on Fe-buffered MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Similar to the Fe/BaFe2As2 bilayers, the crystalline quality of FeSe1-xTex films exhibit a sharp out-of-plane and in-plane texture less than 0.9°. The Fe/FeSe1-xTex bilayers showed high superconducting transition temperatures of over 17 K. The angular-dependent critical current densities exhibit peaks positioned at H // ab similar to other pnictide thin films. The volume pinning force of FeSe1-xTex in this direction is very strong compared with that of Co-doped BaFe2As2, due to a good matching between the interlayer distance in the c direction and the out-of-plane coherence length.
