Convergent Power Series for Anharmonic Chain with Periodic Forcing

We study the propagation of energy in one-dimensional anharmonic chains subject to a periodic, localized forcing. For the purely harmonic case, forcing frequencies outside the linear spectrum produce exponentially localized responses, preventing equi-distribution of energy per degree of freedom. We extend this result to anharmonic perturbations with bounded second derivatives and boundary dissipation, proving that for small perturbations and non-resonant forcing, the dynamics converges to a periodic stationary state with energy exponentially localized uniformly in the system size. The perturbed periodic state is described by a convergent power type expansion in the strength of the anharmonicity. This excludes chaoticity induced by anharmonicity, independently of the size of the system. Our perturbative scheme can also be applied in higher dimensions.

Kinetic limit for a chain of harmonic oscillators with a point Langevin thermostat

We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat attached at the origin and energy, momentum and volume conserving noise that models the collisions between atoms. The noise is rarefied in the limit, {that corresponds to the hypothesis} that in the macroscopic unit time only a finite number of collisions takes place (Boltzmann-Grad limit). We prove that, after the hyperbolic space-time rescaling, the Wigner distribution, describing the energy density of phonons in space-frequency domain, converges to a positive energy density function $W(t, y, k)$ that evolves according to a linear kinetic equation, with the interface condition at $y=0$ that corresponds to reflection, transmission and absorption of phonons. The paper extends the results of [3], where a thermostatted harmonic chain (with no inter-particle scattering) has been considered.

Quasi-static limit for the asymmetric simple exclusion

We study the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process on the lattice $\{1, \dots,N\}$ with creation/annihilation at the boundaries. The boundary rates are time dependent and change on a slow time scale $N^{-a}$ with $a>0$. We prove that at the time scale $N^{1+a}$ the system evolves quasi-statically with a macroscopic density profile given by the entropy solution of the stationary Burgers equation with boundary densities changing in time, determined by the corresponding microscopic boundary rates. We consider two different types of boundary rates: the "Liggett boundaries" that correspond to the projection of the infinite dynamics, and the reversible boundaries, that correspond to the contact with particle reservoirs in equilibrium. The proof is based on the control of the Lax boundary entropy--entropy flux pairs and a coupling argument.

Hydrodynamic Limits and Clausius inequality for Isothermal Non-linear Elastodynamics with Boundary Tension

We consider a chain of particles connected by an-harmonic springs, with a boundary force (tension) acting on the last particle, while the first particle is kept pinned at a point. The particles are in contact with stochastic heat baths, whose action on the dynamics conserves the volume and the momentum, while energy is exchanged with the heat baths in such way that, in equilibrium, the system is at a given temperature $T$. We study the space empirical profiles of volume stretch and momentum under hyperbolic rescaling of space and time as the size of the system growth to be infinite, with the boundary tension changing slowly in the macroscopic time scale. We prove that the probability distributions of these profiles concentrate on $L^2$-valued weak solutions of the isothermal Euler equations (i.e. the non-linear wave equation, also called p-system), satisfying the boundary conditions imposed by the microscopic dynamics. Furthermore, the weak solutions obtained satisfy the Clausius inequality between the work done by the boundary force and the change of the total free energy in the system. This result includes the shock regime of the system.

Subdiffusion in one-dimensional Hamiltonian chains with sparse interactions

We establish rigorously that transport is slower than diffusive for a class of disordered one-dimensional Hamiltonian chains. This is done by deriving quantitative bounds on the variance in equilibrium of the energy or particle current, as a function of time. The slow transport stems from the presence of rare insulating regions (Griffiths regions). In many-body disordered quantum chains, they correspond to regions of anomalously high disorder, where the system is in a localized phase. In contrast, we deal with quantum and classical disordered chains where the interactions, usually referred to as anharmonic couplings in classical systems, are sparse. The system hosts thus rare regions with no interactions and, since the chain is Anderson localized in the absence of interactions, the non-interacting rare regions are insulating. Part of the mathematical interest of our model is that it is one of the few non-integrable models where the diffusion constant can be rigorously proven not to be infinite.

Equilibrium fluctuation for an anharmonic chain with boundary conditions in the Euler scaling limit

We study the evolution in equilibrium of the fluctuations for the conserved quantities of a chain of anharmonic oscillators in the hyperbolic space-time scaling. Boundary conditions are determined by applying a constant tension at one side, while the position of the other side is kept fixed. The Hamiltonian dynamics is perturbed by random terms conservative of such quantities. We prove that these fluctuations evolve macroscopically following the linearized Euler equations with the corresponding boundary conditions, even in some time scales larger than the hyperbolic one.

Role of conserved quantities in Fourier's law for diffusive mechanical systems

Energy transport can be influenced by the presence of other conserved quantities. We consider here diffusive systems where energy and the other conserved quantities evolve macroscopically on the same diffusive space-time scale. In these situations the Fourier law depends also from the gradient of the other conserved quantities. The rotor chain is a classical example of such systems, where energy and angular momentum are conserved. We review here some recent mathematical results about diffusive transport of energy and other conserved quantities, in particular for systems where the bulk Hamiltonian dynamics is perturbed by conservative stochastic terms. The presence of the stochastic dynamics allows to define the transport coefficients (thermal conductivity) and in some cases to prove the local equilibrium and the linear response argument necessary to obtain the diffusive equations governing the macroscopic evolution of the conserved quantities. Temperature profiles and other conserved quantities profiles in the non-equilibrium stationary states can be then understood from the non-stationary diffusive behaviour. We also review some results and open problems on the two step approach (by weak coupling or kinetic limits) to the heat equation, starting from mechanical models with only energy conserved.

Diffusive Propagation of Energy in a Non-Acoustic Chain

We consider a non acoustic chain of harmonic oscillators with the dynamics perturbed by a random local exchange of momentum, such that energy and momentum are conserved. The macroscopic limits of the energy density, momentum and the curvature (or bending) of the chain satisfy a system of evolution equations}. We prove that, in a diffusive space-time scaling, the curvature and momentum evolve following a linear system that corresponds to a damped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. The macroscopic energy density evolves following a non linear diffusive equation. In particular the energy transfer is diffusive in this dynamics. This provides a first rigorous example of a normal diffusion of energy in a one dimensional dynamics that conserves the momentum.

Non-equilibrium isothermal transformations in a temperature gradient from a microscopic dynamics

We consider a chain of anharmonic oscillators immersed in a heat bath with a temperature gradient and a time varying tension applied to one end of the chain while the other side is fixed to a point. We prove that under diffusive space-time rescaling the volume strain distribution of the chain evolves following a non-linear diffusive equation. The stationary states of the dynamics are of non-equilibrium and have a positive entropy production, so the classical relative entropy methods cannot be used. We develop new estimates based on entropic hypocoercivity, that allows to control the distribution of the positions configurations of the chain. The macroscopic limit can be used to model isothermal thermodynamic transformations between non-equilibrium stationary states.

Pathwise estimates for an effective dynamics

Starting from the overdamped Langevin dynamics in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $$ dX_t = -\nabla V(X_t) dt + \sqrt{2 β^{-1}} dW_t, $$ we consider a scalar Markov process $ξ_t$ which approximates the dynamics of the first component $X^1_t$. In the previous work [F. Legoll, T. Lelievre, Nonlinearity 2010], the fact that $(ξ_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is a good approximation of $(X^1_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is proven in terms of time marginals, under assumptions quantifying the timescale separation between the first component and the other components of $X_t$. Here, we prove an upper bound on the trajectorial error $\mathbb{E} \left( \sup_{0 \leq t \leq T} \left| X^1_t - ξ_t \right| \right)$, for any $T > 0$, under a similar set of assumptions. We also show that the technique of proof can be used to obtain quantitative averaging results.

Ballistic and superdiffusive scales in macroscopic evolution of a chain of oscillators

We consider a one dimensional infinite acoustic chain of harmonic oscillators whose dynamics is perturbed by a random exchange of velocities, such that the energy and momentum of the chain are conserved. Consequently, the evolution of the system has only three conserved quantities: volume, momentum and energy. We show the existence of two space--time scales on which the en- ergy of the system evolves. On the hyperbolic scale (t$ε$--1,x$ε$--1) the limits of the conserved quantities satisfy a Euler system of equa- tions, while the thermal part of the energy macroscopic profile re- mains stationary. Thermal energy starts evolving at a longer time scale, corresponding to the superdiffusive scaling (t$ε$--3/2, x$ε$--1) and follows a fractional heat equation. We also prove the diffusive scal- ing limit of the Riemann invariants - the so called normal modes, corresponding to the linear hyperbolic propagation.

Quasi-static hydrodynamic limits

We consider hydrodynamic limits of interacting particles systems with open boundaries, where the exterior parameters change in a time scale slower than the typical relaxation time scale. The limit deterministic profiles evolve quasi-statically. These limits define rigorously the thermodynamic quasi static transformations also for transition between non-equilibrium stationary states. We study first the case of the symmetric simple exclusion, where duality can be used, and then we use relative entropy methods to extend to other models like zero range systems. Finally we consider a chain of anharmonic oscillators in contact with a thermal Langevin bath with a temperature gradient and a slowly varying tension applied to one end.

Green-Kubo formula for weakly coupled system with dynamical noise

We study the Green-Kubo (GK) formula $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ for the heat conductivity of an infinite chain of $d$-dimensional finite systems (cells) coupled by a smooth nearest neighbour potential $\varepsilon V$. The uncoupled systems evolve according to Hamiltonian dynamics perturbed stochastically by an energy conserving noise of strength $ξ$. Noting that $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ exists and is finite whenever $ξ> 0$, we are interested in what happens when the strength of the noise $ξ\to 0$. For this, we start in this work by formally expanding $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ in a power series in $\varepsilon$, $κ(\varepsilon, ξ) = \varepsilon^2 \sum_{n\ge 2} \varepsilon^{n-2} κ_n (ξ)$ and investigating the (formal) equations satisfied by $κ_n (ξ$. We show in particular that $κ_2 (ξ)$ is well defined when no pinning potential is present, and coincides formally with the heat conductivity obtained in the weak coupling (van Hove) limit, where time is rescaled as $\varepsilon^{-2}t$, for the cases where the latter has been established \cite{LO, DL}. For one-dimensional systems, we investigate $κ_2 (ξ)$ as $ξ\to 0$ in three cases: the disordered harmonic chain, the rotor chain and a chain of strongly anharmonic oscillators. Moreover, we formally identify $κ_2 (ξ)$ with the conductivity obtained by having the chain between two reservoirs at temperature $T$ and $T+δT$, in the limit $δT\to 0$, $N \to \infty$, $\varepsilon \to 0$.

Microscopic derivation of an adiabatic thermodynamic transformation

We obtain macroscopic adiabatic thermodynamic transformations by space-time scalings of a microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics subject to random collisions with the environment. The microscopic dynamics is given by a chain of oscillators subject to a varying tension (external force) and to collisions with external independent particles of "infinite mass". The effect of each collision is to change the sign of the velocity without changing the modulus. This way the energy is conserved by the resulting dynamics. After a diffusive space-time scaling and cross-graining, the profiles of volume and energy converge to the solution of a deterministic diffusive system of equations with boundary conditions given by the applied tension. This defines an irreversible thermodynamic transformation from an initial equilibrium to a new equilibrium given by the final tension applied. Quasi-static reversible adiabatic transformations are then obtained by a further time scaling. Then we prove that the relations between the limit work, internal energy and thermodynamic entropy agree with the first and second principle of thermodynamics.

Hydrodynamic Limit for an Hamiltonian System with Boundary Conditions and Conservative Noise

We study the hyperbolic scaling limit for a chain of N coupled anharmonic oscillators. The chain is attached to a point on the left and there is a force (tension) $τ$ acting on the right. In order to provide good ergodic properties to the system, we perturb the Hamiltonian dynamics with random local exchanges of velocities between the particles, so that momentum and energy are locally conserved. We prove that in the macroscopic limit the distributions of the elongation, momentum and energy, converge to the solution of the Euler system of equations, in the smooth regime.

preprint2013arXiv

Microscopic Derivation of an Isothermal Thermodynamic Transformation

We obtain macroscopic isothermal thermodynamic transformations by space-time scalings of a microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics in contact with a heat bath. The microscopic dynamics is given by a chain of anharmonic oscillators subject to a varying tension (external force) and the contact with the heat bath is modeled by independent Langevin dynamics acting on each particle. After a diffusive space-time scaling and cross-graining, the profile of volume converges to the solution of a deterministic diffusive equation with boundary conditions given by the applied tension. This defines an irreversible thermodynamic transformation from an initial equilibrium to a new equilibrium given by the final tension applied. Quasi static reversible isothermal transformations are then obtained by a further time scaling. Heat is defined as the total flux of energy exchanged between the system and the heat bath. Then we prove that the relation between the limit heat, work, free energy and thermodynamic entropy agree with the first and second principle of thermodynamics.

Asymptotics of the solutions of the stochastic lattice wave equation

We consider the long time limit theorems for the solutions of a discrete wave equation with a weak stochastic forcing. The multiplicative noise conserves the energy and the momentum. We obtain a time-inhomogeneous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation for the limit wave function that holds both for square integrable and statistically homogeneous initial data. The limit is understood in the point-wise sense in the former case, and in the weak sense in the latter. On the other hand, the weak limit for square integrable initial data is deterministic.

Transport Properties of a Chain of Anharmonic Oscillators with random flip of velocities

We consider the stationary states of a chain of $n$ anharmonic coupled oscillators, whose deterministic hamiltonian dynamics is perturbed by random independent sign change of the velocities (a random mechanism that conserve energy). The extremities are coupled to thermostats at different temperature $T_\ell$ and $T_r$ and subject to constant forces $τ_\ell$ and $τ_r$. If the forces differ $τ_\ell \neq τ_r$ the center of mass of the system will move of a speed $V_s$ inducing a tension gradient inside the system. Our aim is to see the influence of the tension gradient on the thermal conductivity. We investigate the entropy production properties of the stationary states, and we prove the existence of the Onsager matrix defined by Green-kubo formulas (linear response). We also prove some explicit bounds on the thermal conductivity, depending on the temperature.

preprint2011arXiv

Negative thermal conductivity of chains of rotors with mechanical forcing

We consider chains of rotors subjected to both thermal and mechanical forcings,in a nonequilibrium steady-state. Unusual nonlinear profiles of temperature and velocities are observed in the system. In particular, the temperature is maximal in the center, which is an indication of the nonlocal behavior of the system. In spite of that, local equilibrium holds for long enough chains. Our numerical results also show that, when the mechanical forcing is strong enough, the energy current can be increased by an inverse temperature gradient. This counterintuitive result again reveals the complexity of nonequilibrium states.

Toward the Fourier law for a weakly interacting anharmonic crystal

For a system of weakly interacting anharmonic oscillators, perturbed by an energy preserving stochastic dynamics, we prove an autonomous (stochastic) evolution for the energies at large time scale (with respect to the coupling parameter). It turn out that this macroscopic evolution is given by the so called conservative (non-gradient) Ginzburg-Landau system of stochastic differential equations. The proof exploits hypocoercivity and hypoellipticity properties of the uncoupled dynamics.

preprint2009arXiv

Thermal conductivity of the Toda lattice with conservative noise

We study the thermal conductivity of the one dimensional Toda lattice perturbed by a stochastic dynamics preserving energy and momentum. The strength of the stochastic noise is controlled by a parameter $γ$. We show that heat transport is anomalous, and that the thermal conductivity diverges with the length $n$ of the chain according to $κ(n) \sim n^α$, with $0 < α\leq 1/2$. In particular, the ballistic heat conduction of the unperturbed Toda chain is destroyed. Besides, the exponent $α$ of the divergence depends on $γ$.
