Anosov Flows and Dynamical Zeta Functions (Errata)

This errata fixes a mistake in the part of Giulietti, P.; Liverani, C.; Pollicott, M. Anosov flows and dynamical zeta functions. Ann. of Math. (2) {\bf 178} (2013), no. 2, 687--773, which proves a spectral gap for contact Anosov flows with respect to the measure of maximal entropy (Section 7). However, the first part of the paper, in which it is proved that the Ruelle zeta function is meromorphic, is unaffected.

Exponential Decay of Correlations for Finite Horizon Sinai Billiard Flows

We prove exponential decay of correlations for the billiard flow associated with a two-dimensional finite horizon Lorentz Gas (i.e., the Sinai billiard flow with finite horizon). Along the way, we describe the spectrum of the generator of the corresponding semi-group L_t of transfer operators, i.e., the resonances of the Sinai billiard flow, on a suitable Banach space of anisotropic distributions. (Revised after referees' comments.)

Fast-slow partially hyperbolic systems versus Freidlin-Wentzell random systems

We consider a simple class of fast-slow partially hyperbolic dynamical systems and show that the (properly rescaled) behaviour of the slow variable is very close to a Friedlin--Wentzell type random system for times that are rather long, but much shorter than the metastability scale. Also, we show the possibility of a "sink" with all the Lyapunov exponents positive, a phenomenon that turns out to be related to the lack of absolutely continuity of the central foliation.

Statistical properties of mostly contracting fast-slow partially hyperbolic systems

We consider a class of $\mathcal C^{4}$ partially hyperbolic systems on $\mathbb T^2$ described by maps $F_\varepsilon(x,θ)=(f(x,θ),θ+\varepsilonω(x,θ))$ where $f(\cdot,θ)$ are expanding maps of the circle. For sufficiently small $\varepsilon$ and $ω$ generic in an open set, we precisely classify the SRB measures for $F_\varepsilon$ and their statistical properties, including exponential decay of correlation for Hölder observables with explicit and nearly optimal bounds on the decay rate.

Green-Kubo formula for weakly coupled system with dynamical noise

We study the Green-Kubo (GK) formula $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ for the heat conductivity of an infinite chain of $d$-dimensional finite systems (cells) coupled by a smooth nearest neighbour potential $\varepsilon V$. The uncoupled systems evolve according to Hamiltonian dynamics perturbed stochastically by an energy conserving noise of strength $ξ$. Noting that $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ exists and is finite whenever $ξ> 0$, we are interested in what happens when the strength of the noise $ξ\to 0$. For this, we start in this work by formally expanding $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ in a power series in $\varepsilon$, $κ(\varepsilon, ξ) = \varepsilon^2 \sum_{n\ge 2} \varepsilon^{n-2} κ_n (ξ)$ and investigating the (formal) equations satisfied by $κ_n (ξ$. We show in particular that $κ_2 (ξ)$ is well defined when no pinning potential is present, and coincides formally with the heat conductivity obtained in the weak coupling (van Hove) limit, where time is rescaled as $\varepsilon^{-2}t$, for the cases where the latter has been established \cite{LO, DL}. For one-dimensional systems, we investigate $κ_2 (ξ)$ as $ξ\to 0$ in three cases: the disordered harmonic chain, the rotor chain and a chain of strongly anharmonic oscillators. Moreover, we formally identify $κ_2 (ξ)$ with the conductivity obtained by having the chain between two reservoirs at temperature $T$ and $T+δT$, in the limit $δT\to 0$, $N \to \infty$, $\varepsilon \to 0$.

Mixing for some non-uniformly hyperbolic systems

In this work we obtain mixing (and in some cases sharp mixing rates) for a reasonable large class of invertible systems preserving an infinite measure. The examples considered here are the invertible analogue of both Markov and non Markov unit interval maps. Moreover, we obtain results on the decay of correlation in the finite case of invertible non Markov maps, which, to our knowledge, were not previously addressed. The present method consists of a combination of the framework of operator renewal theory, as introduced in the context of dynamical systems by Sarig [39], with the framework of function spaces of distributions developed in the recent years along the lines of Blank, Keller and Liverani [9].

The martingale approach after Varadhan and Dolgopyat

We present, in the simplest possible form, the so called martingale problem strategy to establish limit theorems. The presentation is specially adapted to problems arising in partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. We will discuss a simple partially hyperbolic example with fast-slow variables and use the martingale method to prove an averaging theorem and study fluctuations from the average. The emphasis is on ideas rather than on results. Also, no effort whatsoever is done to review the vast literature of the field.

Robustly invariant sets in fibre contracting bundle flows

We provide abstract conditions which imply the existence of a robustly invariant neighbourhood of a global section of a fibre bundle flow. We then apply such a result to the bundle flow generated by an Anosov flow when the fibre is the space of jets (which are described by local manifolds). As a consequence we obtain sets of manifolds (e.g. approximations of stable manifolds) that are left invariant, {\bf for all} negative times, by the flow and its small perturbations. Finally, we show that the latter result can be used to easily fix a mistake recently uncovered in the paper {\em Smooth Anosov flows: correlation spectra and stability}, \cite{BuL}, by the present authors.

Anosov Flows and Dynamical Zeta Functions

We study the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions for $\Cs^r$ Anosov flows, $r > 2$, on a compact smooth manifold. We prove several results, the most remarkable being: (a) for $\Cs^\infty$ flows the zeta function is meromorphic on the entire complex plane; (b) for contact flows satisfying a bunching condition (e.g. geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature better than $\frac 19$-pinched) the zeta function has a pole at the topological entropy and is analytic in a strip to its left; (c) under the same hypotheses as in (b) we obtain sharp results on the number of periodic orbits. Our arguments are based on the study of the spectral properties of a transfer operator acting on suitable Banach spaces of anisotropic currents.

Exponential decay of correlations for piecewise cone hyperbolic contact flows

We prove exponential decay of correlations for a realistic model of piecewise hyperbolic flows preserving a contact form, in dimension three. This is the first time exponential decay of correlations is proved for continuous-time dynamics with singularities on a manifold. Our proof combines the second author's version of Dolgopyat's estimates for contact flows and the first author's work with Gouëzel on piecewise hyperbolic discrete-time dynamics. (Presentation revised.)

Energy transfer in a fast-slow Hamiltonian system

We consider a finite region of a lattice of weakly interacting geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature and we show that, when rescaling the interactions and the time appropriately, the energies of the flows evolve according to a non linear diffusion equation. This is a first step toward the derivation of macroscopic equations from a Hamiltonian microscopic dynamics in the case of weakly coupled systems.

preprint2010arXiv

Toward the Fourier law for a weakly interacting anharmonic crystal

For a system of weakly interacting anharmonic oscillators, perturbed by an energy preserving stochastic dynamics, we prove an autonomous (stochastic) evolution for the energies at large time scale (with respect to the coupling parameter). It turn out that this macroscopic evolution is given by the so called conservative (non-gradient) Ginzburg-Landau system of stochastic differential equations. The proof exploits hypocoercivity and hypoellipticity properties of the uncoupled dynamics.

Quenched CLT for random toral automorphism

We establish a quenched Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for a smooth observable of random sequences of iterated linear hyperbolic maps on the torus. To this end we also obtain an annealed CLT for the same system. We show that, almost surely, the variance of the quenched system is the same as for the annealed system. Our technique is the study of the transfer operator on an anisotropic Banach space specifically tailored to use the cone condition satisfied by the maps.
