Berry phase of light Bragg-reflected by chiral liquid crystal media

Berry phase is revealed for circularly polarized light when it is Bragg-reflected by a chiral liquid crystal medium of the same handedness. By using a chiral nematic layer we demonstrate that if the input plane of the layer is rotated with respect to a fixed reference frame, then, a geometric phase effect occurs for the circularly polarized light reflected by the periodic helical structure of the medium. Theory and numerical simulations are supported by an experimental observation, disclosing novel applications in the field of optical manipulation and fundamental optical phenomena.

One-Dimensional Optical Wave Turbulence: Experiment and Theory

We present a review of the latest developments in 1D OWT. Based on an original experimental setup that allows for the implementation of 1D OWT, we are able to show that an inverse cascade occurs through the spontaneous evolution of the nonlinear field up to the point when modulational instability leads to soliton formation. After solitons are formed, further interaction of the solitons among themselves and with incoherent waves leads to a final condensate state dominated by a single strong soliton. Motivated by the observations, we develop a theoretical description, showing that the inverse cascade develops through six-wave interaction, and that this is the basic mechanism of nonlinear wave coupling for 1D OWT. We describe theory, numerics and experimental observations while trying to incorporate all the different aspects into a consistent context.

Experimental observation of speckle instability in Kerr random media

In a disordered medium with Kerr-type nonlinearity, the transmitted speckle pattern was predicted to become unstable, as a result of the positive feedback between the intensity fluctuations and the nonlinear dependence of the local refractive index. We present the first experimental evidence of speckle instability of light transversally scattered in a liquid crystal cell. A two-dimensional controlled disorder is imprinted in the medium through a suitable illumination of a photoconductive wall of the cell, whereas the nonlinear response is obtained through optical reorientation of the liquid crystal molecules. Speckle patterns with oscillating intensity are observed above a critical threshold, which is found to depend on the scattering mean free path, as predicted by theory.

Optical wave turbulence and condensation of light

In an optical experiment, we report a wave turbulence regime that, starting with weakly nonlinear waves with randomized phases, shows an inverse cascade of photons towards the lowest wavenumbers. We show that the cascade is induced by a six-wave resonant interaction process and is characterized by increasing nonlinearity. At low wavenumbers the nonlinearity becomes strong and leads to modulational instability developing into solitons, whose number is decreasing further along the beam.

Localized states in bistable pattern forming systems

We present an unifying description of a new class of localized states, appearing as large amplitude peaks nucleating over a pattern of lower amplitude. Localized states are pinned over a lattice spontaneously generated by the system itself. We show that the phenomenon is generic and requires only the coexistence of two spatially periodic states. At the onset of the spatial bifurcation, a forced amplitude equation is derived for the critical modes, which accounts for the appearance of localized peaks

On a liquid drop "falling" inside a heavier miscible fluid

We report a new type of drop instability, where the density difference between the drop and the solvent is negative. We show that the drop falls inside the solvent down to a minimum height, then fragmentation takes place and secondary droplets rise up to the surface. We have developed a theoretical model that captures the essential of the phenomenon and predicts the correct scalings for the rise-up time and the minimum height.
