Closed geodesics on reversible Finsler 2-spheres

We extend two celebrated theorems on closed geodesics of Riemannian 2-spheres to the larger class of reversible Finsler 2-spheres: Lusternik-Schnirelmann's theorem asserting the existence of three simple closed geodesics, and Bangert-Franks-Hingston's theorem asserting the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics. In order to prove the first theorem, we employ the generalization of Grayson's curve shortening flow developed by Angenent-Oaks.

Conformally embedded spacetimes and the space of null geodesics

It is shown that the space of null geodesics of a causally simple Lorentzian manifold is Hausdorff if it admits an open conformal embedding into a globally hyperbolic spacetime. This provides an obstruction to conformal embeddings of causally simple spacetimes into globally hyperbolic ones irrespective of curvature conditions. Examples of causally simple spacetimes are given not conformally embeddable into globally hyperbolic ones.

Completeness of hyperbolic centroaffine hypersurfaces

This paper is concerned with the completeness (with respect to the centroaffine metric) of hyperbolic centroaffine hypersurfaces which are closed in the ambient vector space. We show that completeness holds under generic regularity conditions on the boundary of the convex cone generated by the hypersurface. The main result is that completeness holds for hyperbolic components of level sets of homogeneous cubic polynomials. This implies that every such component defines a complete quaternionic Kähler manifold of negative scalar curvature.

Completeness of projective special Kähler and quaternionic Kähler manifolds

We prove that every projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{regular boundary behaviour} is complete and defines a family of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds depending on a parameter $c\ge 0$. We also show that, irrespective of its boundary behaviour, every complete projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{cubic prepotential} gives rise to such a family. Examples include non-trivial deformations of non-compact symmetric quaternionic Kähler manifolds.

On spacelike Zoll surfaces with symmetries

Three explicit families of spacelike Zoll surface admitting a Killing field are provided. It allows to prove the existence of spacelike Zoll surface not smoothly conformal to a cover of de Sitter space as well as the existence of Lorentzian Möbius strips of non constant curvature all of whose spacelike geodesics are closed. Further the conformality problem for spacelike Zoll cylinders is studied.

Pseudo-Riemannian geodesic foliations by circles

We investigate under which assumptions an orientable pseudo-Riemannian geodesic foliations by circles is generated by an $S^1$-action. We construct examples showing that, contrary to the Riemannian case, it is not always true. However, we prove that such an action always exists when the foliation does not contain lightlike leaves, i.e. a pseudo-Riemannian Wadsley's Theorem. As an application, we show that every Lorentzian surface all of whose spacelike/timelike geodesics are closed, is finitely covered by $S^1\times \R$. It follows that every Lorentzian surface contains a non-closed geodesic.

Class A Spacetimes

We introduce class A spacetimes, i.e. compact vicious spacetimes $(M,g)$ such that the Abelian cover $(\bar{M},\bar{g})$ is globally hyperbolic. We study the main properties of class A spacetimes using methods similar to the one introduced in D. Sullivan "Cycles for the dynamical study of foliated manifolds and complex manifolds" (Invent. Math.,36, 225-255 (1976)) and D. Yu. Burago "Periodic metrics" (Representation theory and dynamical systems (Adv. Soviet Math.), 9, 205-210 (1992)). As a consequence we are able to characterize manifolds admitting class A metrics completely as mapping tori. Further we show that the notion of class A spacetime is equivalent to that of SCTP (spacially compact time-periodic) spacetimes as introduced in Galloway "Splitting theorems for spatially closed spacetimes" (Comm Math Phys 96:423-429, 1984). The set of class A spacetimes is shown to be open in the $C^0$-topology on the set of Lorentzian metrics. As an application we prove a coarse Lipschitz property for the time separation of the Abelian cover. This coarse Lipschitz property is an essential part in the study of Aubry-Mather theory in Lorentzian geometry.

Homologically maximizing geodesics in conformally flat tori

We study homologically maximizing timelike geodesics in conformally flat tori. A causal geodesic $γ$ in such a torus is said to be homologically maximizing if one (hence every) lift of $γ$ to the universal cover is arclength maximizing. First we prove a compactness result for homologically maximizing timelike geodesics. This yields the Lipschitz continuity of the time separation of the universal cover on strict sub-cones of the cone of future pointing vectors. Then we introduce the stable time separation $\mathfrak{l}$. As an application we prove relations between the concavity properties of $\mathfrak{l}$ and the qualitative behavior of homologically maximizing geodesics.
