The Mathematical Structure of $U$-Spin Amplitude Sum Rules

We perform a systematic study of $SU(2)$ flavor amplitude sum rules with particular emphasis on $U$-spin. This study reveals a rich mathematical structure underlying the sum rules that allows us to formulate an algorithm for deriving all $U$-spin amplitude sum rules to any order of the symmetry breaking. This novel approach to deriving the sum rules does not require one to explicitly compute the Clebsch-Gordan tables, and allows for simple diagrammatic interpretation. Several examples that demonstrate the application of our novel method to systems that can be probed experimentally are provided.

Probing the $ΔU=0$ Rule in Three Body Charm Decays

CP violation in charm decay was observed in the decays $D^0\rightarrow P^{\pm}P^{\mp}$ of a $D^0$ meson to two pseudoscalars. When interpreted within the SM, the results imply that the ratio of the relevant rescattering amplitudes has a magnitude and phase that are both of $O(1)$. We discuss ways to probe similar ratios in $D^0\rightarrow V^{\pm}P^{\mp}$ decays, where $V$ is a vector that decays to two pseudoscalars, from the Dalitz-plot analysis of time-integrated three-body decays. Compared to two-body decays, three-body decays have the advantage that the complete system can be solved without the need for time-dependent CP violation measurements or use of correlated $D^0$--$\overline{D}^0$ production. We discuss the decays $D^0\rightarrow π^+π^-π^0$ and $D^0\rightarrow K^+K^-π^0$ as examples by considering a toy model of only two overlapping charged resonances, treating the underlying pseudo two-body decays in full generality.

On the Statistical Treatment of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly

We point out that testing the equality of the Cabibbo angle as extracted from $Γ(K\rightarrow πlν)$, the ratio $Γ(K\rightarrow lν)/Γ(π\rightarrow lν)$ and nuclear $β$ decays is not identical to a test of first row unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. The reason is that a CKM unitarity test involves only two parameters, while the degrees of freedom for the assessment of the goodness-of-fit of the universality of the Cabibbo angle entailed by the Standard Model (SM) is equal to the number of measurements minus one. Beyond the SM all different processes could in principle give different Cabibbo angles. Consequently, the difference between the two tests becomes relevant starting from three observables giving results for the Cabibbo angle that are in tension with each other. With current data, depending on the treatment of the nuclear $β$ decays, we find that New Physics is favored over the SM at $5.1\,σ$ or $3.6\,σ$ while CKM unitarity is rejected at $4.8σ$ or $3.0σ$, respectively. We argue that the best method to test the SM is to test the equality of the Cabibbo angle, because CKM unitarity is only one aspect of the SM.

The Emergence of the $ΔU=0$ Rule in Charm Physics

We discuss the implications of the recent discovery of CP violation in two-body SCS $D$ decays by LHCb. We show that the result can be explained within the SM without the need for any large $SU(3)$ breaking effects. It further enables the determination of the imaginary part of the ratio of the $ΔU=0$ over $ΔU=1$ matrix elements in charm decays, which we find to be $(0.65\pm 0.12)$. Within the standard model, the result proves the non-perturbative nature of the penguin contraction of tree operators in charm decays, similar to the known non-perturbative enhancement of $ΔI=1/2$ over $ΔI=3/2$ matrix elements in kaon decays, that is, the $ΔI=1/2$ rule. As a guideline for future measurements, we show how to completely solve the most general parametrization of the $D \to P^+P^-$ system.

CP Violation in $D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S$

The direct CP asymmetry $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S)$ involves exchange diagrams which are induced at tree level in the Standard Model. Since the corresponding topological amplitude $E_{KK}$ can be large, $D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S$ is a promising discovery channel for charm CP violation. We estimate the penguin annihilation amplitude with a perturbative calculation and extract the exchange amplitude $E_{KK}$ from a global fit to $D$ branching ratios. Our results are further used to predict the size of mixing-induced CP violation. We obtain $\vert a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S)\vert \leq 1.1\%$ (95\% C.L.). The same bound applies to the nonuniversal part of the phase between the $D\!-\overline{\!D}\,$ mixing and decay amplitudes. If future data exceed our predictions, this will point to new physics or an enhancement of the penguin annihilation amplitude by QCD dynamics. We briefly discuss the implications of these possibilities for other CP asymmetries.

Standard Model Predictions and New Physics Sensitivity in B->DD Decays

An extensive model-independent analysis of B->DD decays is carried out employing SU(3) flavour symmetry, including symmetry-breaking corrections. Several theoretically clean observables are identified which allow for testing the Standard Model. These include the known time-dependent CP asymmetries, the penguin pollution of which can be controlled in this framework, but notably also quasi-isospin relations which are experimentally well accessible and unaffected by symmetry-breaking corrections. Theoretical assumptions can be kept to a minimum and controlled by additional sum rules. Available data are used in global fits to predict the branching ratio for the B0->DsDs decay as well as several CP asymmetries which have not been measured so far, and future prospects are analyzed.

Sum Rules of Charm CP Asymmetries beyond the SU(3)$_F$ Limit

We find new sum rules between direct CP asymmetries in $D$ meson decays with coefficients that can be determined from a global fit to branching ratio data. Our sum rules eliminate the penguin topologies $P$ and $PA$, which cannot be determined from branching ratios. In this way we can make predictions about direct CP asymmetries in the standard model without ad hoc assumptions on the sizes of penguin diagrams. We consistently include first-order SU(3)$_F$ breaking in the topological amplitudes extracted from the branching ratios. By confronting our sum rules with future precise data from LHCb and Belle~II one will identify or constrain new-physics contributions to $P$ or $PA$. The first sum rule correlates the CP asymmetries $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}$ in $D^0\to K^+K^-$, $D^0\to π^+π^-$, and $D^0\to π^0π^0$. We study the region of the $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\to π^+π^-)$--$a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}} (D^0\to π^0π^0)$ plane allowed by current data and find that our sum rule excludes more than half of the allowed region at 95\% C.L. Our second sum rule correlates the direct CP asymmetries in $D^+\rightarrow \bar{K}^0 K^+$, $D_s^+\rightarrow K^0 π^+$, and $D_s^+\rightarrow K^+π^0$.

Topological amplitudes in $D$ decays to two pseudoscalars: a global analysis with linear $SU(3)_F$ breaking

We study decays of $D^0$, $D^+$, and $D_s^+$ mesons into two pseudoscalar mesons by expressing the decay amplitudes in terms of topological amplitudes. Including consistently SU(3)$_F$ breaking to linear order, we show how the topological-amplitude decomposition can be mapped onto the standard expansion using reduced amplitudes characterized by SU(3) representations. The tree and annihilation amplitudes can be calculated in factorization up to corrections which are quadratic in the color-counting parameter $1/N_c$. We find new sum rules connecting $D^+\rightarrow K_SK^+$, $D_s^+\rightarrow K_Sπ^+$ and $D^+\rightarrow K^+π^0$, which test the quality of the $1/N_c$ expansion. Subsequently, we determine the topological amplitudes in a global fit to the data, taking the statistical correlations among the various measurements into account. We carry out likelihood ratio tests in order to quantify the role of specific topological contributions. While the SU(3)$_F$ limit is excluded with a significance of more than five standard deviations, a good fit (with $Δχ^2 <1$) can be obtained with less than $28\%$ of SU(3)$_F$ breaking in the decay amplitudes. The magnitude of the penguin amplitude $P_{\mathrm{break}}$, which probes the Glashow Iliopoulos Maiani (GIM) mechanism, is consistent with zero; the hypothesis $P_{\mathrm{break}}=0$ is rejected with a significance of just $0.7σ$. We obtain the Standard-Model correlation between $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_L π^0)$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_Sπ^0)$, which probes doubly Cabibbo-suppressed amplitudes, and find that $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_L π^0)<\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_Sπ^0)$ holds with a significance of more than $4σ$. We finally predict $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\rightarrow K_L K^+)= 0.012^{+0.006}_{-0.002}$ at $3σ$ CL.

B -> K^* Form Factors from Flavor Data to QCD and Back

Sufficient control of transition form factors is a vital ingredient for the precision flavor programs including the nearer term searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the forthcoming Belle II experiment. We improve on existing methods to extract B -> K^* form factor ratios at low hadronic recoil from B -> K^* l^+ l^- data on the angular observables F_L, A_T^(2) and P'_4 by adding heavy quark symmetry-based constraints and by investigating the cross talk between low and large recoil. The data-extracted form factor ratios i) provide benchmarks for the lattice and light cone sum rule predictions, the latter of which have been updated including improved uncertainty estimations and ii) allow to improve the predictions for benchmark observables. We find that present data on the forward-backward asymmetry A_FB and the angular observable P'_5 at low recoil are in good agreement with the Standard Model.

SU(3)-Flavor Anatomy of Non-Leptonic Charm Decays

We perform a comprehensive SU(3)-flavor analysis of charmed mesons decaying to two pseudoscalar SU(3)-octet mesons. Taking into account SU(3)-breaking effects induced by the splitting of the quark masses, m_s != m_{u,d}, we find that existing data can be described by SU(3)-breaking of the order 30%. The requisite penguin enhancement to accomodate all data on CP violation tends to be even larger than the one extracted from Delta a_{CP}^{dir}(K^+K^-,pi^+pi^-) alone, strengthening explanations beyond the standard model. Despite the large number of matrix elements, correlations between CP asymmetries allow potentially to differentiate between different scenarios for the underlying dynamics, as well as between the standard model and various extensions characterized by SU(3) symmetry and its subgroups. We investigate how improved measurements of the direct CP asymmetries in singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays can further substantiate the interpretation of the data. We show that particularly informative are the asymmetries in D->pi^+pi^- versus D->K^+K^-, D_s->K_S pi^+ versus D^+->K_S K^+, D^+->pi^+ pi^0, D->pi^0pi^0, and D->K_S K_S.

SU(3)F in nonleptonic charm decays

We present updated results of an SU(3)-flavor analysis of D->P P decay data including linear breaking and no further assumptions. The global fit is consistent with nominal (~ 30%) SU(3)F breaking and returns enhanced penguin (triplet) contributions. Their size is driven, in addition to Delta A_{CP}, by the CP asymmetries of D_0->K_S K_S, D_s->K_S pi^+ and D_s->K^+ pi^0 decays. It is therefore especially important to improve these measurements.

Squark Flavor Implications from B --> K(*) l+ l-

Recent experimental and theoretical progress regarding B --> K(*) l+ l- decays led to improved bounds on the Wilson coefficients C_9 and C_10 of four-fermion operators of the |Delta B|=|Delta S|=1 effective Hamiltonian. We analyze the resulting implications on squark flavor violation in the MSSM and obtain new constraints on flavor-changing left-right mixing in the up-squark-sector. We find the dimensionless flavor mixing parameter (delta^u_23)_LR, depending on the flavor-diagonal MSSM masses and couplings, to be as low as \lesssim 0.1. This has implications for models based on radiative flavor violation and leads to BR(B_s --> mu+ mu-) \gtrsim 1 x 10^-9. Rare top decays t --> c gamma, t --> c g, t --> c Z have branching ratios predicted to be below \lesssim few times 10^-8, 10^-6 and 10^-7, respectively.
