Supersymmetric action for 6D $(4,0)$ supergravity

We give a linearized but otherwise complete supersymmetric action for ${\cal N}=(4,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions, using a Kaluza-Klein-type $5+1$ split of coordinates and fields. We provide in particular a significantly simplified version of the bosonic action derived by us recently. This formulation employs fields that are no longer irreducible, subject to a local Lorentz invariance, which in turn simplifies the supersymmetry transformations including the exotic gravitino.

The Effective Theory of Quantum Black Holes

We explore the quantum nature of black holes by introducing an effective framework that takes into account deviations from the classical results. The approach is based on introducing quantum corrections to the classical Schwarzschild geometry in a way that is consistent with the physical scales of the black hole and its classical symmetries. This is achieved by organizing the quantum corrections in inverse powers of a physical distance. By solving the system in a self-consistent way we show that the derived physical quantities, such as event horizons, temperature and entropy can be expressed in a well defined expansion in the inverse powers of the black hole mass. The approach captures the general form of the quantum corrections to black hole physics without requiring to commit to a specific model of quantum gravity.

Epidemiological theory of virus variants

We propose a physical theory underlying the temporal evolution of competing virus variants that relies on the existence of (quasi) fixed points capturing the large time scale invariance of the dynamics. To motivate our result we first modify the time-honoured compartmental models of the SIR type to account for the existence of competing variants and then show how their evolution can be naturally re-phrased in terms of flow equations ending at quasi fixed points. As the natural next step we employ (near) scale invariance to organise the time evolution of the competing variants within the effective description of the epidemic Renormalization Group framework. We test the resulting theory against the time evolution of COVID-19 virus variants that validate the theory empirically.

From Little String Free Energies Towards Modular Graph Functions

We study the structure of the non-perturbative free energy of a one-parameter class of little string theories (LSTs) of A-type in the so-called unrefined limit. These theories are engineered by $N$ M5-branes probing a transverse flat space. By analysing a number of examples, we observe a pattern which suggests to write the free energy in a fashion that resembles a decomposition into higher-point functions which can be presented in a graphical way reminiscent of sums of (effective) Feynman diagrams: to leading order in the instanton parameter of the LST, the $N$ external states are given either by the fundamental building blocks of the theory with $N=1$, or the function that governs the counting of BPS states of a single M5-brane coupling to one M2-brane on either side. These states are connected via an effective coupling function which encodes the details of the gauge algebra of the LST and which in its simplest (non-trivial) form is captured by the scalar Greens function on the torus. More complicated incarnations of this function show certain similarities with so-called modular graph functions, which have appeared in the study of Feynman amplitudes in string- and field theory. Finally, similar structures continue to exist at higher instanton orders, which, however, also contain contributions that can be understood as the action of (Hecke) operators on the leading instanton result.

Symmetric Orbifold Theories from Little String Residues

We study a class of Little String Theories (LSTs) of A type, described by $N$ parallel M5-branes spread out on a circle and which in the low energy regime engineer supersymmetric gauge theories with $U(N)$ gauge group. The BPS states in this setting correspond to M2-branes stretched between the M5-branes. Generalising an observation made in arXiv:1706.04425, we provide evidence that the BPS counting functions of special subsectors of the latter exhibit a Hecke structure in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit, i.e. the different orders in an instanton expansion of the supersymmetric gauge theory are related through the action of Hecke operators. We extract $N$ distinct such reduced BPS counting functions from the full free energy of the LST with the help of contour integrals with respect to the gauge parameters of the $U(N)$ gauge group. Physically, the states captured by these functions correspond to configurations where the same number of M2-branes is stretched between some of these neighbouring M5-branes, while the remaining M5-branes are collapsed on top of each other and a particular singular contribution is extracted. The Hecke structures suggest that these BPS states form the spectra of symmetric orbifold CFTs. We furthermore show that to leading instanton order (in the NS-limit) the reduced BPS counting functions factorise into simpler building blocks. These building blocks are the expansion coefficients of the free energy for $N=1$ and the expansion of a particular function, which governs the counting of BPS states of a single M5-brane with single M2-branes ending on it on either side. To higher orders in the instanton expansion, we observe new elements appearing in this decomposition, whose coefficients are related through a holomorphic anomaly equation.

Toward Exotic 6D Supergravities

We investigate exotic supergravity theories in 6D with maximal (4,0) and (3,1) supersymmetry, which were conjectured by C. Hull to exist and to describe strong coupling limits of ${\cal N}=8$ theories in 5D. These theories involve exotic gauge fields with non-standard Young tableaux representations, subject to (self-)duality constraints. We give novel actions in a 5+1 split of coordinates whose field equations reproduce those of the free bosonic (4,0) and (3,1) theory, respectively, including the (self-)duality relations. Evidence is presented for a master exceptional field theory formulation with an extended section constraint that, depending on the solution, produces the (4,0), (3,1) or the conventional (2,2) theory. We comment on the possible construction of a fully non-linear master exceptional field theory.

Instanton-Monopole Correspondence from M-Branes on $\mathbb{S}^1$ and Little String Theory

We study BPS excitations in M5-M2-brane configurations with a compact transverse direction, which are also relevant for type IIa and IIb little string theories. These configurations are dual to a class of toric elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds $X_N$ with manifest $SL(2, \mathbb{Z}) \times SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular symmetry. They admit two dual gauge theory descriptions. For both, the non-perturbative partition function can be written as an expansion of the topological string partition function of $X_N$ with respect to either of the two modular parameters. We analyze the resulting BPS counting functions in detail and find that they can be fully constructed as linear combinations of the BPS counting functions of M5-M2-brane configurations with non-compact transverse directions. For certain M2-brane configurations, we also find that the free energies in the two dual theories agree with each other, which points to a new correspondence between instanton and monopole configurations. These results are also a manifestation of T-duality between type IIa and IIb little string theories.

Self-Duality and Self-Similarity of Little String Orbifolds

We study a class of ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ little string theories obtained from orbifolds of M-brane configurations. These are realised in two different ways that are dual to each other: either as $M$ parallel M5-branes probing a transverse $A_{N-1}$ singularity or $N$ M5-branes probing an $A_{M-1}$ singularity. These backgrounds can further be dualised into toric, non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds $X_{N,M}$ which have double elliptic fibrations and thus give a natural geometric description of T-duality of the little string theories. The little string partition functions are captured by the topological string partition function of $X_{N,M}$. We analyse in detail the free energies $Σ_{N,M}$ associated with the latter in a special region in the Kähler moduli space of $X_{N,M}$ and discover a remarkable property: in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili-limit, $Σ_{N,M}$ is identical to $NM$ times $Σ_{1,1}$. This entails that the BPS degeneracies for any $(N,M)$ can uniquely be reconstructed from the $(N,M)=(1,1)$ configuration, a property we refer to as self-similarity. Moreover, as $Σ_{1,1}$ is known to display a number of recursive structures, BPS degeneracies of little string configurations for arbitrary $(N,M)$ as well acquire additional symmetries. These symmetries suggest that in this special region the two little string theories described above are self-dual under T-duality.

M String, Monopole String and Modular Forms

We study relations between M-strings (one-dimensional intersections of M2-branes and M5-branes) in six dimensions and m-strings (magnetically charged monopole strings) in five dimensions. For specific configurations, we propose that the counting functions of BPS bound-states of M-strings capture the elliptic genus of the moduli space of m-strings. We check this proposal for the known cases, the Taub-NUT and Atiyah-Hitchin spaces for which we find complete agreement. Furthermore, we analyze the modular properties of the M-string free energies, which do not transform covariantly under SL(2,Z). However, for a given number of M-strings, we find that there exists a unique combination of unrefined genus-zero free energies that transforms as a Jacobi form under a congruence subgroup of SL(2,Z). These combinations correspond to summing over different numbers of M5-branes and make sense only if the distances between them are all equal. We explain that this is a necessary condition for the m-string moduli space to be factorizable into relative and center-of-mass parts.

Probing the Moduli Dependence of Refined Topological Amplitudes

With the aim of providing a worldsheet description of the refined topological string, we continue the study of a particular class of higher derivative couplings $F_{g,n}$ in the type II string effective action compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. We analyse first order differential equations in the anti-holomorphic moduli of the theory, which relate the $F_{g,n}$ to other component couplings. From the point of view of the topological theory, these equations describe the contribution of non-physical states to twisted correlation functions and encode an obstruction for interpreting the $F_{g,n}$ as the free energy of the refined topological string theory. We investigate possibilities of lifting this obstruction by formulating conditions on the moduli dependence under which the differential equations simplify and take the form of generalised holomorphic anomaly equations. We further test this approach against explicit calculations in the dual heterotic theory.

M-strings, Elliptic Genera and N=4 String Amplitudes

We study mass-deformed N=2 gauge theories from various points of view. Their partition functions can be computed via three dual approaches: firstly, (p,q)-brane webs in type II string theory using Nekrasov's instanton calculus, secondly, the (refined) topological string using the topological vertex formalism and thirdly, M theory via the elliptic genus of certain M-strings configurations. We argue for a large class of theories that these approaches yield the same gauge theory partition function which we study in detail. To make their modular properties more tangible, we consider a fourth approach by connecting the partition function to the equivariant elliptic genus of R^4 through a (singular) theta-transform. This form appears naturally as a specific class of one-loop scattering amplitudes in type II string theory on T^2, which we calculate explicitly.

Exploring 6D origins of 5D supergravities with Chern-Simons terms

We consider five-dimensional supergravity theories with eight or sixteen supercharges with Abelian vector fields and ungauged scalars. We address the question under which conditions these theories can be interpreted as effective low energy descriptions of circle reductions of anomaly free six-dimensional theories with (1,0) or (2,0) supersymmetry. We argue that classical and one-loop gauge- and gravitational Chern-Simons terms are instrumental for this question.

Non-Perturbative Nekrasov Partition Function from String Theory

We calculate gauge instanton corrections to a class of higher derivative string effective couplings introduced in [1]. We work in Type I string theory compactified on K3xT2 and realise gauge instantons in terms of D5-branes wrapping the internal space. In the field theory limit we reproduce the deformed ADHM action on a general Ω-background from which one can compute the non-perturbative gauge theory partition function using localisation. This is a non-perturbative extension of [1] and provides further evidence for our proposal of a string theory realisation of the Ω-background.

One-loop Chern-Simons terms in five dimensions

We compute one-loop corrections to five-dimensional gauge and gravitational Chern-Simons terms induced by integrating out charged massive fields. The considered massive fields are spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 fermions, as well as complex two-forms with first order kinetic terms. Consistency with six-dimensional gravitational anomalies of (1,0) and (2,0) theories is shown by interpreting the massive fields as excited Kaluza-Klein modes in a circle compactification. The results are in accordance with the geometric predictions of the M-theory to F-theory duality as well as the comparison with an explicit one-loop computation in heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x S^1.

A Kaluza-Klein inspired action for chiral p-forms and their anomalies

The dynamics of chiral p-forms can be captured by a lower-dimensional parity-violating action motivated by a Kaluza-Klein reduction on a circle. The massless modes are (p-1)-forms with standard kinetic terms and Chern-Simons couplings to the Kaluza-Klein vector of the background metric. The massive modes are p-forms charged under the Kaluza-Klein vector and admit parity-odd first-order kinetic terms. Gauge invariance is implemented by a Stueckelberg-like mechanism using (p-1)-forms. A Chern-Simons term for the Kaluza-Klein vector is generated at one loop by massive p-form modes. These findings are shown to be consistent with anomalies and supersymmetry for six-dimensional supergravity theories with chiral tensor multiplets.

Non-Abelian Tensor Towers and (2,0) Superconformal Theories

With the aim to study six-dimensional (2,0) superconformal theories with non-Abelian tensor multiplets we propose a five-dimensional superconformal action with eight supersymmetries for an infinite tower of non-Abelian vector, tensor and hypermultiplets. It describes the dynamics of the complete spectrum of the (2,0) theories compactified on a circle coupled to an additional vector multiplet containing the circle radius and the Kaluza-Klein vector arising from the six-dimensional metric. All couplings are only given in terms of group theoretical constants and the Kaluza-Klein levels. After superconformal symmetry is reduced to Poincare supersymmetry we find a Kaluza-Klein inspired action coupling super-Yang-Mills theory to an infinite tower of massive non-Abelian tensors. We explore the possibility to restore sixteen supersymmetries by using techniques known from harmonic superspace. Namely, additional bosonic coordinates on a four-sphere are introduced to enhance the R-symmetry group. Maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and the Abelian (2,0) tensor theories are recovered as special cases of our construction. Finally, we comment on the generation of an anomaly balancing Wess-Zumino term for the R-symmetry vector at one loop.

Borcherds Algebras and N=4 Topological Amplitudes

The perturbative spectrum of BPS-states in the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string theory compactified on T^2 is analysed. We show that the space of BPS-states forms a representation of a certain Borcherds algebra G which we construct explicitly using an auxiliary conformal field theory. The denominator formula of an extension G_{ext} \supset G of this algebra is then found to appear in a certain heterotic one-loop N=4 topological string amplitude. Our construction thus gives an N=4 realisation of the idea envisioned by Harvey and Moore, namely that the `algebra of BPS-states' controls the threshold corrections in the heterotic string.

Enhanced Gauge Groups in N=4 Topological Amplitudes and Lorentzian Borcherds Algebras

We continue our study of algebraic properties of N=4 topological amplitudes in heterotic string theory compactified on T^2, initiated in arXiv:1102.1821. In this work we evaluate a particular one-loop amplitude for any enhanced gauge group h \subset e_8 + e_8, i.e. for arbitrary choice of Wilson line moduli. We show that a certain analytic part of the result has an infinite product representation, where the product is taken over the positive roots of a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra g^{++}. The latter is obtained through double extension of the complement g= (e_8 + e_8)/h. The infinite product is automorphic with respect to a finite index subgroup of the full T-duality group SO(2,18;Z) and, through the philosophy of Borcherds-Gritsenko-Nikulin, this defines the denominator formula of a generalized Kac-Moody algebra G(g^{++}), which is an 'automorphic correction' of g^{++}. We explicitly give the root multiplicities of G(g^{++}) for a number of examples.

Mathieu Moonshine in the elliptic genus of K3

It has recently been conjectured that the elliptic genus of K3 can be written in terms of dimensions of Mathieu group M24 representations. Some further evidence for this idea was subsequently found by studying the twining genera that are obtained from the elliptic genus upon replacing dimensions of Mathieu group representations by their characters. In this paper we find explicit formulae for all (remaining) twining genera by making an educated guess for their general modular properties. This allows us to identify the decomposition of all expansion coefficients in terms of dimensions of M24-representations. For the first 500 coefficients we verify that the multiplicities with which these representations appear are indeed all non-negative integers. This represents very compelling evidence in favour of the conjecture.

Symmetries of K3 sigma models

It is shown that the supersymmetry-preserving automorphisms of any non-linear sigma-model on K3 generate a subgroup of the Conway group Co_1. This is the stringy generalisation of the classical theorem, due to Mukai and Kondo, showing that the symplectic automorphisms of any K3 manifold form a subgroup of the Mathieu group M_{23}. The Conway group Co_1 contains the Mathieu group M_{24} (and therefore in particular M_{23}) as a subgroup. We confirm the predictions of the Theorem with three explicit CFT realisations of K3: the T^4/Z_2 orbifold at the self-dual point, and the two Gepner models (2)^4 and (1)^6. In each case we demonstrate that their symmetries do not form a subgroup of M_{24}, but lie inside Co_1 as predicted by our Theorem.

Manifestly Supersymmetric RG Flows

Renormalisation group (RG) equations in two-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric field theories with boundary are studied. It is explained how a manifestly N=1 supersymmetric scheme can be chosen, and within this scheme the RG equations are determined to next-to-leading order. We also use these results to revisit the question of how brane obstructions and lines of marginal stability appear from a world-sheet perspective.

A note on the holography of Chern-Simons matter theories with flavour

We study a three-dimensional N=3 U(N)_k x U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons matter theory with flavour, corresponding to the N=6 Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena CSM theory coupled to 2N_f fundamental fields. The dual holographic description is given by the near-horizon geometry of N M2-branes at a particular hypertoric geometry M_8. We explicitly construct the space M_8 and match its isometries to the global symmetries of the field theory. We also discuss the model in the quenched approximation by embedding probe D6-branes in AdS_4 x CP^3.

Obstructions and lines of marginal stability from the world-sheet

The behaviour of supersymmetric D-branes under deformations of the closed string background is studied using world-sheet methods. We explain how lines of marginal stability and obstructions arise from this point of view. We also show why N=2 B-type branes may be obstructed against (cc) perturbations, but why such obstructions do not occur for N=4 superconformal branes at c=6, i.e. for half-supersymmetric D-branes on K3. Our analysis is based on a field theory approach in superspace, as well as on techniques from perturbed conformal field theory.
