The free field realisation of the BVW string

The symmetric orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4$ was recently shown to be exactly dual to string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with minimal ($k=1$) NS-NS flux. The worldsheet theory is best formulated in terms of the hybrid formalism of Berkovits, Vafa & Witten (BVW), in terms of which the ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3$ factor is described by a $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_k$ WZW model. At level $k=1$, $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_1$ has a free field realisation that is obtained from that of $\mathfrak{u}(1,1|2)_1$ upon setting a $\mathfrak{u}(1)$ field, often called $Z$, to zero. We show that the free field version of the ${\cal N}=2$ generators of BVW (whose cohomology defines the physical states) does not give rise to an ${\cal N}=2$ algebra, but is rather contaminated by terms proportional to the $Z$-field. We also show how to overcome this problem by introducing additional ghost fields that implement the quotienting by $Z$.

Deformed Shatashvili-Vafa algebra for superstrings on AdS$_3\times {\cal M}_7$

String backgrounds of the form $\mathbb{M}_3 \times {\cal M}_7$ where $\mathbb{M}_3$ denotes $3$-dimensional Minkowski space while ${\cal M}_7$ is a $7$-dimensional G$_2$-manifold, are characterised by the property that the world-sheet theory has a Shatashvili-Vafa (SV) chiral algebra. We study the generalisation of this statement to backgrounds where the Minkowski factor $\mathbb{M}_3$ is replaced by ${\rm AdS}_3$. We argue that in this case the world-sheet theory is characterised by a certain ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal ${\cal W}$-algebra that has the same spin spectrum as the SV algebra and also contains a tricritical Ising model ${\cal N}=1$ subalgebra. We determine the allowed representations of this ${\cal W}$-algebra, and analyse to which extent the special features of the SV algebra survive this generalisation.

Deriving the $\text{AdS}_{3}/\text{CFT}_{2}$ Correspondence

It was recently argued that string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$ with one unit ($k=1$) of NS-NS flux is exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold CFT ${\rm Sym}^N(\mathbb{T}^4)$. In this paper we show how to directly relate the $n$-point correlators of the two sides to one another. In particular, we argue that the correlators of the world-sheet theory are delta-function-localised in string moduli space to those configurations that allow for a holomorphic covering map of the $\text{S}^2$-boundary of $\text{AdS}_3$ by the world-sheet. This striking feature can be seen both from a careful Ward identity analysis, as well as from semi-classically exact AdS$_3$ solutions that are pinned to the boundary. The world-sheet correlators therefore have exactly the same structure as in the Lunin-Mathur construction of symmetric orbifold CFT correlators in terms of a covering surface -- which now gets identified with the world-sheet. Together with the results of arXiv:1803.04423 and arXiv:1812.01007 this essentially demonstrates how the $k=1$ $\text{AdS}_3$ string theory becomes equivalent to the spacetime orbifold CFT in the genus expansion.

Free field world-sheet correlators for ${\rm AdS}_3$

We employ the free field realisation of the $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_1$ world-sheet theory to constrain the correlators of string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$ with unit NS-NS flux. In particular, we directly obtain the unusual delta function localisation of these correlators onto branched covers of the boundary ${\rm S}^2$ by the (genus zero) world-sheet -- this is the key property which makes the equivalence to the dual symmetric orbifold manifest. In our approach, this feature follows from a remarkable `incidence relation' obeyed by the correlators, which is reminiscent of a twistorial string description. We also illustrate our results with explicit computations in various special cases.

Strings on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \text{S}^1$

String theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^1$ with pure NS-NS flux and minimal flux through one of the two ${\rm S}^3$'s is studied from a world-sheet perspective. It is shown that the spacetime spectrum, as well as the algebra of spectrum generating operators, matches precisely that of the symmetric orbifold of ${\rm S}^3\times \mathrm{S}^1$ in the large $N$ limit. This gives strong support for the proposal that these two descriptions are exactly dual to one another.

Stringy CFT Duals with $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ Supersymmetry

It was recently shown that string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with minimal NS-NS flux ($k = 1$) is exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold of T4. Here we show that a similar statement also holds for the $D_n$ orbifolds of these backgrounds that have $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetry. In this case the CFT dual is the symmetric orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4/D_n$.

Three-point functions in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ holography

Recently, string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with one unit of NS-NS flux ($k=1$) was argued to be exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold of $ \mathbb{T}^4$, and in particular, the full (unprotected) spectrum was matched between the two descriptions. This duality was later extended to the case with higher NS-NS background flux for which the long string sector was argued to be described by the symmetric product orbifold of $(\mathcal{N}=4$ $\text{Liouville}) \times \mathbb{T}^4$. In this paper we study correlation functions for the bosonic analogue of this duality, relating bosonic string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times X$ to the symmetric orbifold of $\text{Liouville} \times X$. More specifically, we show that the low-lying null vectors of Liouville theory correspond to BRST exact states from the worldsheet perspective, and we demonstrate that they give rise to the expected BPZ differential equations for the dual CFT correlators. Since the structure constants of Liouville theory are uniquely fixed by these constraints, this shows that the seed theory of the dual CFT contains indeed the Liouville factor.

Higher spin algebras and large $\mathcal{N}=4$ holography

A new family of higher spin algebras that arises upon restricting matrix extensions of $\mathfrak{shs}[λ]$ is found. We identify coset CFTs realising these symmetry algebras, and thus propose new higher spin-CFT dual pairs. These higher spin theories arise naturally as a subsector of string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^1$ for specific ratios of the radii of the two spheres.

A holographic dual for string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathrm{S}^1$

The CFT dual of string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathrm{S}^1$ is conjectured to be the symmetric orbifold of the $\mathcal{S}_κ$ theory, provided that one of the two $Q_5^\pm$ quantum numbers is a multiple of the other. We determine the BPS spectrum of the symmetric orbifold in detail, and show that it reproduces precisely the BPS spectrum that was recently calculated in supergravity. We also determine the BPS spectrum of the world-sheet theory that is formulated in terms of WZW models, and show that, apart from some gaps (which are reminiscent of those that appear in the corresponding $\mathbb{T}^4$ calculation), it also reproduces this BPS spectrum. In fact, the matching seems to work as well as for the familiar $\mathbb{T}^4$ case, and thus our results give strong support for this proposal.

Higgsing the stringy higher spin symmetry

It has recently been argued that the symmetric orbifold theory of T4 is dual to string theory on AdS3 x S3 x T4 at the tensionless point. At this point in moduli space, the theory possesses a very large symmetry algebra that includes, in particular, a $W_\infty$ algebra capturing the gauge fields of a dual higher spin theory. Using conformal perturbation theory, we study the behaviour of the symmetry generators of the symmetric orbifold theory under the deformation that corresponds to switching on the string tension. We show that the generators fall nicely into Regge trajectories, with the higher spin fields corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory. We also estimate the form of the Regge trajectories for large spin, and find evidence for the familiar logarithmic behaviour, thereby suggesting that the symmetric orbifold theory is dual to an AdS background with pure RR flux.

The symmetric orbifold of N=2 minimal models

The large level limit of the N=2 minimal models that appear in the duality with the N=2 supersymmetric higher spin theory on AdS_3 is shown to be a natural subsector of a certain symmetric orbifold theory. We study the relevant decompositions in both the untwisted and the twisted sector, and analyse the structure of the higher spin representations in the twisted sector in some detail. These results should help to identify the string background of which the higher spin theory is expected to describe the leading Regge trajectory in the tensionless limit.

Twisted sectors from plane partitions

Twisted sectors arise naturally in the bosonic higher spin CFTs at their free points, as well as in the associated symmetric orbifolds. We identify the coset representations of the twisted sector states using the description of W_\infty representations in terms of plane partitions. We confirm these proposals by a microscopic null-vector analysis, and by matching the excitation spectrum of these representations with the orbifold prediction.

Higher spins in the symmetric orbifold of K3

The symmetric orbifold of K3 is believed to be the CFT dual of string theory on AdS3 x S3 x K3 at the tensionless point. For the case when the K3 is described by the orbifold T4/Z2, we identify a subsector of the symmetric orbifold theory that is dual to a higher spin theory on AdS3. We analyse how the BPS spectrum of string theory can be described from the higher spin perspective, and determine which single-particle BPS states are accounted for by the perturbative higher spin theory.

Generalised Mathieu Moonshine

The Mathieu twisted twining genera, i.e. the analogues of Norton's generalised Moonshine functions, are constructed for the elliptic genus of K3. It is shown that they satisfy the expected consistency conditions, and that their behaviour under modular transformations is controlled by a 3-cocycle in H^3(M_24,U(1)), just as for the case of holomorphic orbifolds. This suggests that a holomorphic VOA may be underlying Mathieu Moonshine.

Genus two partition functions of chiral conformal field theories

A systematic analysis of the genus two vacuum amplitudes of chiral self-dual conformal field theories is performed. It is explained that the existence of a modular invariant genus two partition function implies infinitely many relations among the structure constants of the theory. All of these relations are shown to be a consequence of the associativity of the OPE, as well as the modular covariance properties of the torus one-point functions. Using these techniques we prove that for the proposed extremal conformal field theories at c=24k a consistent genus two vacuum amplitude exists for all k, but that this does not actually check the consistency of these theories beyond what is already testable at genus one.

Large N=4 Holography

The class of 2d minimal model CFTs with higher spin AdS3 duals is extended to theories with large N=4 superconformal symmetry. We construct a higher spin theory based on the global D(2,1|alpha) superalgebra, and propose a large N family of cosets as a dual CFT description. We also indicate how a non-abelian version of this Vasiliev higher spin theory might give an alternative description of IIB string theory on an AdS3 x S3 x S3 x S1 background.

The $\mathfrak{so}$-Kazama-Suzuki Models at Large Level

The large level limit of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ ${\rm SO}(2N)$ Kazama-Suzuki coset models is argued to be equivalent to the orbifold of $4N$ free fermions and bosons by the Lie group ${\rm SO}(2N) \times {\rm SO}(2)$. In particular, it is shown that the untwisted sector of the continuous orbifold accounts for a certain closed subsector of the coset theory. Furthermore, the ground states of the twisted sectors are identified with specific coset representations, and this identification is checked by various independent arguments.

The Continuous Orbifold of N=2 Minimal Model Holography

For the N=2 Kazama-Suzuki models that appear in the duality with a higher spin theory on AdS_3 it is shown that the large level limit can be interpreted as a continuous orbifold of 2N free bosons and fermions by the group U(N). In particular, we show that the subset of coset representations that correspond to the perturbative higher spin degrees of freedom are precisely described by the untwisted sector of this U(N) orbifold. We furthermore identify the twisted sector ground states of the orbifold with specific coset representations, and give various pieces of evidence in favour of this identification.

The Spectrum of Light States in Large N Minimal Models

$W_{N,k}$ minimal models possess an interesting class of `light' primaries which control much of the low energy density of states in the large $N$ 't Hooft limit. In this paper we conduct a detailed exploration of their distribution using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. We also make some observations about the density of states of the full CFT. Our results appear to support the contention that there is no finite temperature analogue of the Hawking-Page transition in these systems.

The symmetry of large N=4 holography

For the proposed duality relating a family of N=4 superconformal coset models to a certain supersymmetric higher spin theory on AdS_3, the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the bulk description is determined. It is shown that, depending on the choice of the boundary charges, one may obtain either the linear or the non-linear superconformal algebra on the boundary. We compare the non-linear version of the asymptotic symmetry algebra with the non-linear coset algebra and find non-trivial agreement in the 't Hooft limit, thus giving strong support for the proposed duality. As a by-product of our analysis we also show that the W_infinity symmetry of the coset theory is broken under the exactly marginal perturbation that preserves the N=4 superconformal algebra.

A K3 sigma model with Z_2^8:M_{20} symmetry

The K3 sigma model based on the Z_2-orbifold of the D_4-torus theory is studied. It is shown that it has an equivalent description in terms of twelve free Majorana fermions, or as a rational conformal field theory based on the affine algebra su(2)^6. By combining these different viewpoints we show that the N=(4,4) preserving symmetries of this theory are described by the discrete symmetry group Z_2^8:M_{20}. This model therefore accounts for one of the largest maximal symmetry groups of K3 sigma models. The symmetry group involves also generators that, from the orbifold point of view, map untwisted and twisted sector states into one another.

Generalised Moonshine and Holomorphic Orbifolds

Generalised moonshine is reviewed from the point of view of holomorphic orbifolds, putting special emphasis on the role of the third cohomology group H^3(G, U(1)) in characterising consistent constructions. These ideas are then applied to the case of Mathieu moonshine, i.e. the recently discovered connection between the largest Mathieu group M_24 and the elliptic genus of K3. In particular, we find a complete list of twisted twining genera whose modular properties are controlled by a class in H^3(M_24, U(1)), as expected from general orbifold considerations.

N=1 extension of minimal model holography

The CFT dual of the higher spin theory with minimal N = 1 spectrum is determined. Unlike previous examples of minimal model holography, there is no free parameter beyond the central charge, and the CFT can be described in terms of a non-diagonal modular invariant of the bosonic theory at the special value of the 't Hooft parameter lambda=1/2. As evidence in favour of the duality we show that the symmetry algebras as well as the partition functions agree between the two descriptions.

Perturbations of W(infinity) CFTs

The holographic duals of higher spin theories on AdS_3 are described by the large N limit of a family of minimal model CFTs, whose symmetry algebra is equivalent to W(infinity)[lambda]. We study perturbations of these limit theories, and show that they possess a marginal symmetry-preserving perturbation that describes switching on the 1/N corrections. We also test our general results for the specific cases of lambda=0,1, where free field realisations are available.

Probing higher spin black holes from CFT

In a class of 2D CFTs with higher spin symmetry, we compute thermal two-point functions of certain scalar primary operators in the presence of nonzero chemical potential for higher spin charge. These are shown to agree with the same quantity calculated holographically using scalar fields propagating in a charged black hole background of 3D higher spin gravity. This match serves as further evidence for the duality between W_N minimal models at large central charge and 3D higher spin gravity. It also supports a recent prescription for computing boundary correlators of multi-trace scalar primary operators in higher spin theories.

Duality in N=2 minimal model holography

Recently a duality between a family of \mathcal{N}=2 supersymmetric higher spin theories on AdS3, and the 't Hooft like limit of a class of Kazama-Suzuki models (that are parametrised by N and k) was proposed. The higher spin theories can be described by a Chern-Simons theory based on the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra shs[μ], and under the duality, μis to be identified with λ=N/(N+k+1). Here we elucidate the structure of the (quantum) asymptotic symmetry algebra sW_{\infty}[μ] for arbitrary μand central charge c. In particular, we show that for each value of the central charge, there are generically four different values of μthat describe the same sW_{\infty} algebra. Among other things this proves that the quantum symmetries on both sides of the duality agree; this equivalence does not just hold in the 't Hooft limit, but even at finite N and k.

Even spin minimal model holography

The even spin W^e_\infty algebra that is generated by the stress energy tensor together with one Virasoro primary field for every even spin s \geq 4 is analysed systematically by studying the constraints coming from the Jacobi identities. It is found that the algebra is characterised, in addition to the central charge, by one free parameter that can be identified with the self-coupling constant of the spin 4 field. We show that W^e_\infty can be thought of as the quantisation of the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the even higher spin theory on AdS_3. On the other hand, W^e_\infty is also quantum equivalent to the so(N) coset algebras, and thus our result establishes an important aspect of the even spin minimal model holography conjecture. The quantum equivalence holds actually at finite central charge, and hence opens the way towards understanding the duality beyond the leading 't Hooft limit.

Higher Spin Black Holes from CFT

Higher spin gravity in three dimensions has explicit black holes solutions, carrying higher spin charge. We compute the free energy of a charged black hole from the holographic dual, a 2d CFT with extended conformal symmetry, and find exact agreement with the bulk thermodynamics. In the CFT, higher spin corrections to the free energy can be calculated at high temperature from correlation functions of W-algebra currents.

Limits of minimal models and continuous orbifolds

The lambda=0 't Hooft limit of the 2d W_N minimal models is shown to be equivalent to the singlet sector of a free boson theory, thus paralleling exactly the structure of the free theory in the Klebanov-Polyakov proposal. In 2d, the singlet sector does not describe a consistent theory by itself since the corresponding partition function is not modular invariant. However, it can be interpreted as the untwisted sector of a continuous orbifold, and this point of view suggests that it can be made consistent by adding in the appropriate twisted sectors. We show that these twisted sectors account for the `light states' that were not included in the original 't Hooft limit. We also show that, for the Virasoro minimal models (N=2), the twisted sector of our orbifold agrees precisely with the limit theory of Runkel & Watts. In particular, this implies that our construction satisfies crossing symmetry.

Mathieu Moonshine and Orbifold K3s

The current status of `Mathieu Moonshine', the idea that the Mathieu group M24 organises the elliptic genus of K3, is reviewed. While there is a consistent decomposition of all Fourier coefficients of the elliptic genus in terms of Mathieu M24 representations, a conceptual understanding of this phenomenon in terms of K3 sigma-models is still missing. In particular, it follows from the recent classification of the automorphism groups of arbitrary K3 sigma-models that (i) there is no single K3 sigma-model that has M24 as an automorphism group; and (ii) there exist `exceptional' K3 sigma-models whose automorphism group is not even a subgroup of M24. Here we show that all cyclic torus orbifolds are exceptional in this sense, and that almost all of the exceptional cases are realised as cyclic torus orbifolds. We also provide an explicit construction of a Z5 torus orbifold that realises one exceptional class of K3 sigma-models.

A modular invariant bulk theory for the c=0 triplet model

A proposal for the bulk space of the logarithmic W(2,3)-triplet model at central charge zero is made. The construction is based on the idea that one may reconstruct the bulk theory of a rational conformal field theory from its boundary theory. The resulting bulk space is a quotient of the direct sum of projective representations, which is isomorphic, as a vector space, to the direct sum of tensor products of the irreducible representations with their projective covers. As a consistency check of our analysis we show that the partition function of the bulk theory is modular invariant, and that the boundary state analysis is compatible with the proposed annulus partition functions of this model.

Borcherds Algebras and N=4 Topological Amplitudes

The perturbative spectrum of BPS-states in the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string theory compactified on T^2 is analysed. We show that the space of BPS-states forms a representation of a certain Borcherds algebra G which we construct explicitly using an auxiliary conformal field theory. The denominator formula of an extension G_{ext} \supset G of this algebra is then found to appear in a certain heterotic one-loop N=4 topological string amplitude. Our construction thus gives an N=4 realisation of the idea envisioned by Harvey and Moore, namely that the `algebra of BPS-states' controls the threshold corrections in the heterotic string.

Mathieu Moonshine in the elliptic genus of K3

It has recently been conjectured that the elliptic genus of K3 can be written in terms of dimensions of Mathieu group M24 representations. Some further evidence for this idea was subsequently found by studying the twining genera that are obtained from the elliptic genus upon replacing dimensions of Mathieu group representations by their characters. In this paper we find explicit formulae for all (remaining) twining genera by making an educated guess for their general modular properties. This allows us to identify the decomposition of all expansion coefficients in terms of dimensions of M24-representations. For the first 500 coefficients we verify that the multiplicities with which these representations appear are indeed all non-negative integers. This represents very compelling evidence in favour of the conjecture.

Partition Functions of Holographic Minimal Models

The partition function of the W_N minimal model CFT is computed in the large N 't Hooft limit and compared to the spectrum of the proposed holographic dual, a 3d higher spin gravity theory coupled to massive scalar fields. At finite N, the CFT contains additional light states that are not visible in the perturbative gravity theory. We carefully define the large N limit, and give evidence that, at N = infinity, the additional states become null and decouple from all correlation functions. The surviving states are shown to match precisely (for all values of the 't Hooft coupling) with the spectrum of the higher spin gravity theory. The agreement between bulk and boundary is partially explained by symmetry considerations involving the conjectured equivalence between the W_N algebra in the large N limit and the higher spin algebra of the Vasiliev theory.

Symmetries of Holographic Minimal Models

It was recently proposed that a large N limit of a family of minimal model CFTs is dual to a certain higher spin gravity theory in AdS_3, where the 't Hooft coupling constant of the CFT is related to a deformation parameter of the higher spin algebra. We identify the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the higher spin theory for generic 't Hooft parameter, and show that it coincides with a family of W-algebras previously discovered in the context of the KP hierarchy. We furthermore demonstrate that this family of W-algebras controls the representation theory of the minimal model CFTs in the 't Hooft limit. This provides a non-trivial consistency check of the proposal and explains part of the underlying mechanism.

Symmetries of K3 sigma models

It is shown that the supersymmetry-preserving automorphisms of any non-linear sigma-model on K3 generate a subgroup of the Conway group Co_1. This is the stringy generalisation of the classical theorem, due to Mukai and Kondo, showing that the symplectic automorphisms of any K3 manifold form a subgroup of the Mathieu group M_{23}. The Conway group Co_1 contains the Mathieu group M_{24} (and therefore in particular M_{23}) as a subgroup. We confirm the predictions of the Theorem with three explicit CFT realisations of K3: the T^4/Z_2 orbifold at the self-dual point, and the two Gepner models (2)^4 and (1)^6. In each case we demonstrate that their symmetries do not form a subgroup of M_{24}, but lie inside Co_1 as predicted by our Theorem.

The Gravity Dual of the Ising Model

We evaluate the partition function of three dimensional theories of gravity in the quantum regime, where the AdS radius is Planck scale and the central charge is of order one. The contribution from the AdS vacuum sector can - with certain assumptions - be computed and equals the vacuum character of a minimal model CFT. The torus partition function is given by a sum over geometries which is finite and computable. For generic values of Newton's constant G and the AdS radius L the result has no Hilbert space interpretation, but in certain cases it agrees with the partition function of a known CFT. For example, the partition function of pure Einstein gravity with G=3L equals that of the Ising model, providing evidence that these theories are dual. We also present somewhat weaker evidence that the 3-state and tricritical Potts models are dual to pure higher spin theories of gravity based on SL(3) and E_6, respectively.

The massless string spectrum on AdS_3 x S^3 from the supergroup

String theory on AdS_3 x S^3 is studied in the hybrid formulation. We give a detailed description of the PSL(2|2) supergroup WZW model that underlies the background with pure NS-NS flux, and determine the BRST-cohomology corresponding to the massless string states. The resulting spectrum is shown to match exactly with the expected supergravity answer, including the sectors with small KK momentum on the sphere.

D-brane superpotentials and RG flows on the quintic

The behaviour of D2-branes on the quintic under complex structure deformations is analysed by combining Landau-Ginzburg techniques with methods from conformal field theory. It is shown that the boundary renormalisation group flow induced by the bulk deformations is realised as a gradient flow of the effective space time superpotential which is calculated explicitly to all orders in the boundary coupling constant.

Manifestly Supersymmetric RG Flows

Renormalisation group (RG) equations in two-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric field theories with boundary are studied. It is explained how a manifestly N=1 supersymmetric scheme can be chosen, and within this scheme the RG equations are determined to next-to-leading order. We also use these results to revisit the question of how brane obstructions and lines of marginal stability appear from a world-sheet perspective.

Quantum W-symmetry in AdS_3

It has recently been argued that, classically, massless higher spin theories in AdS_3 have an enlarged W_N-symmetry as the algebra of asymptotic isometries. In this note we provide evidence that this symmetry is realised (perturbatively) in the quantum theory. We perform a one loop computation of the fluctuations for a massless spin $s$ field around a thermal AdS_3 background. The resulting determinants are evaluated using the heat kernel techniques of arXiv:0911.5085. The answer factorises holomorphically, and the contributions from the various spin $s$ fields organise themselves into vacuum characters of the W_N symmetry. For the case of the hs(1,1) theory consisting of an infinite tower of massless higher spin particles, the resulting answer can be simply expressed in terms of (two copies of) the MacMahon function.

Bulk flows in Virasoro minimal models with boundaries

The behaviour of boundary conditions under relevant bulk perturbations is studied for the Virasoro minimal models. In particular, we consider the bulk deformation by the least relevant bulk field which interpolates between the mth and (m-1)st unitary minimal model. In the presence of a boundary this bulk flow induces an RG flow on the boundary, which ensures that the resulting boundary condition is conformal in the (m-1)st model. By combining perturbative RG techniques with insights from defects and results about non-perturbative boundary flows, we determine the endpoint of the flow, i.e. the boundary condition to which an arbitrary boundary condition of the mth theory flows to.

Obstructions and lines of marginal stability from the world-sheet

The behaviour of supersymmetric D-branes under deformations of the closed string background is studied using world-sheet methods. We explain how lines of marginal stability and obstructions arise from this point of view. We also show why N=2 B-type branes may be obstructed against (cc) perturbations, but why such obstructions do not occur for N=4 superconformal branes at c=6, i.e. for half-supersymmetric D-branes on K3. Our analysis is based on a field theory approach in superspace, as well as on techniques from perturbed conformal field theory.

Worldsheet correlators in AdS(3)/CFT(2)

The AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence is checked beyond the supergravity approximation by comparing correlation functions. To this end we calculate 2- and 3-point functions on the sphere of certain chiral primary operators for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. These results are then compared with the corresponding amplitudes in the dual 2-dimensional conformal field theory. In the limit of small string coupling, where the sphere diagrams dominate the string perturbation series, beautiful agreement is found.

The RR charges of A-type Gepner models

It is shown that the RR charges of Gepner models are not all accounted for by the usual tensor product and permutation branes. In order to characterise the missing D-branes we study the matrix factorisation approach to the description of D-branes for Gepner models. For each of the A-type models we identify a set of matrix factorisations whose charges generate the full lattice of quantised charges. The additional factorisations that are required correspond to generalised permutation branes.

Matrix factorisations and permutation branes

The description of B-type D-branes on a tensor product of two N=2 minimal models in terms of matrix factorisations is related to the boundary state description in conformal field theory. As an application we show that the D0- and D2-brane for a number of Gepner models are described by permutation boundary states. In some cases (including the quintic) the images of the D2-brane under the Gepner monodromy generate the full charge lattice.

Generalised discrete torsion and mirror symmetry for G_2 manifolds

A generalisation of discrete torsion is introduced in which different discrete torsion phases are considered for the different fixed points or twist fields of a twisted sector. The constraints that arise from modular invariance are analysed carefully. As an application we show how all the different resolutions of the T^7/Z_2^3 orbifold of Joyce have an interpretation in terms of such generalised discrete torsion orbifolds. Furthermore, we show that these manifolds are pairwise identified under G_2 mirror symmetry. From a conformal field theory point of view, this mirror symmetry arises from an automorphism of the extended chiral algebra of the G_2 compactification.

D-brane interactions in type IIB plane-wave background

The cylinder diagrams that determine the static interactions between pairs of Dp-branes in the type IIB plane wave background are evaluated. The resulting expressions are elegant generalizations of the flat-space formulae that depend on the value of the Ramond-Ramond flux of the background in a non-trivial manner. The closed-string and open-string descriptions consistently transform into each other under a modular transformation only when each of the interacting D-branes separately preserves half the supersymmetries. These results are derived for configurations of euclidean signature D(p+1)-instantons but also generalize to lorentzian signature Dp-branes.

Discrete torsion orbifolds and D-branes II

The consistency of the orbifold action on open strings between D-branes in orbifold theories with and without discrete torsion is analysed carefully. For the example of the C^3/Z_2 x Z_2 theory, it is found that the consistency of the orbifold action requires that the D-brane spectrum contains branes that give rise to a conventional representation of the orbifold group as well as branes for which the representation is projective. It is also shown how the results generalise to the orbifolds C^3/Z_N x Z_N for which a number of novel features arise. In particular, the N>2 theories with minimal discrete torsion have non-BPS branes charged under twisted R-R potentials that couple to none of the (known) BPS branes.

Non-BPS D-branes and M-theory

A dual pair of supersymmetric string theories that involves an asymmetric orbifold and an orientifold of Type II is considered. The D-branes of the orbifold theory (that were recently determined by Gutperle) are all non-BPS and do not carry any conserved gauge charges. It is shown that they carry non-trivial K-theory charges, and that they can be understood in terms of branes wrapping certain homology classes of the M-theory compactification. Using the adiabatic argument, dual partners of some of these non-BPS D-branes are proposed. The relations between these dual states are found to be in agreement with the M-theory description of the D-branes.

Asymmetric Orientifolds, Brane Supersymmetry Breaking and Non-BPS Branes

A new class of six-dimensional asymmetric orientifolds is considered where the orientifold operation is combined with T-duality. The models are supersymmetric in the bulk, but the cancellation of the tadpoles requires the introduction of brane configurations that break supersymmetry. These can be described by D7-brane anti-brane pairs, non-BPS D8-branes or D9-brane anti-brane pairs. The transition between these different configurations and their stability is analysed in detail.

A Local Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory

The local logarithmic conformal field theory corresponding to the triplet algebra at c=-2 is constructed. The constraints of locality and crossing symmetry are explored in detail, and a consistent set of amplitudes is found. The spectrum of the corresponding theory is determined, and it is found to be modular invariant. This provides the first construction of a non-chiral rational logarithmic conformal field theory, establishing that such models can indeed define bona fide conformal field theories.

A Non-Supersymmetric Open String Theory and S-Duality

A non-supersymmetric ten-dimensional open string theory is constructed as an orbifold of type I string theory, and as an orientifold of the bosonic type B theory. It is purely bosonic, and cancellation of massless tadpoles requires the gauge group to be SO(32)xSO(32). The spectrum of the theory contains a closed string tachyon, and open string tachyons in the (32,32) multiplet. The D-branes of this theory are analyzed, and it is found that the massless excitations of one of the 1-branes coincide with the world-sheet degrees of freedom of the D=26 bosonic string theory compactified on the SO(32) lattice. This suggests that the two theories are related by S-duality.

Exceptional groups from open strings

We consider type IIB theory compactified on a two-sphere in the presence of mutually nonlocal 7-branes. The BPS states associated with the gauge vectors of exceptional groups are seen to arise from open strings connecting the 7-branes, and multi-pronged open strings capable of ending on more than two 7-branes. These multi-pronged strings are built from open string junctions that arise naturally when strings cross 7-branes. The different string configurations can be multiplied as traditional open strings, and are shown to generate the structure of exceptional groups.

Indecomposable Fusion Products

We analyse the fusion products of certain representations of the Virasoro algebra for c=-2 and c=-7 which are not completely reducible. We introduce a new algorithm which allows us to study the fusion product level by level, and we use this algorithm to analyse the indecomposable components of these fusion products. They form novel representations of the Virasoro algebra which we describe in detail. We also show that a suitably extended set of representations closes under fusion, and indicate how our results generalise to all (1,q) models.
