Electroweak renormalization based on gauge-invariant vacuum expectation values

We briefly review a recently proposed scheme for a gauge-invariant treatment of tadpole corrections in spontaneously broken gauge theories called Gauge-Invariant Vacuum expectation value Scheme (GIVS). The tadpole scheme matters in higher-order predictions of observables if not all free parameters are fixed by renormalization conditions based on S-matrix elements, such as in MSbar renormalization. In contrast to previously used tadpole schemes, the GIVS unifies the properties of gauge invariance and perturbative stability. The application of the GIVS to the Standard Model, for instance, leads to very moderate electroweak corrections in the conversion of on-shell-renormalized to MSbar-renormalized masses. Moreover, in models with extended Higgs sectors, the GIVS is less prone to perturbative instabilities in the MSbar renormalization of Higgs mixing angles than observed for the traditional gauge-independent tadpole treatment. We illustrate this by considering the next-to-leading-order (electroweak and QCD) corrections to the decay processes $h/H\to WW/ZZ\to4$fermions of the CP-even neutral Higgs bosons h and H in a singlet Higgs extension of the Standard Model and in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model.

Electroweak renormalization based on gauge-invariant vacuum expectation values of non-linear Higgs representations: 1. Standard Model

The renormalization of vacuum expectation value parameters, such as $v$ in the Standard Model (SM), is an important ingredient in electroweak renormalization, where this issue is connected to the treatment of tadpoles. Tadpole counterterms can be generated in two different ways in the Lagrangian: in the course of parameter renormalization, or alternatively via Higgs field redefinitions. The former typically leads to small corrections originating from tadpoles, but in general suffers from gauge dependences if MSbar renormalization conditions are used for mass parameters. The latter is free from gauge dependences, but is prone to very large corrections in MSbar schemes, jeopardizing perturbative stability in predictions. In this paper we propose a new scheme for tadpole renormalization, dubbed Gauge-Invariant Vacuum expectation value Scheme (GIVS), which is a hybrid scheme of the two mentioned types, with the benefits of being gauge independent and perturbatively stable. The GIVS is based on the gauge-invariance property of Higgs fields, and the corresponding parameters like $v$, in non-linear representations of Higgs multiplets. We demonstrate the perturbative stability of the GIVS in the SM by discussing the conversion between on-shell and MSbar renormalized masses.

Vector Boson Scattering Processes: Status and Prospects

Insight into the electroweak (EW) and Higgs sectors can be achieved through measurements of vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The scattering of EW bosons are rare processes that are precisely predicted in the Standard Model (SM) and are closely related to the Higgs mechanism. Modifications to VBS processes are also predicted in models of physics beyond the SM (BSM), for example through changes to the Higgs boson couplings to gauge bosons and the resonant production of new particles. In this review, experimental results and theoretical developments of VBS at the Large Hadron Collider, its high luminosity upgrade, and future colliders are presented.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections for Collider Physics

Current particle phenomenology is characterized by the spectacular agreement of the predictions of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) with all results from collider experiments and by the absence of significant signals of non-standard physics, despite the fact that we know that the SM cannot be the ultimate theory of nature. In this situation, confronting theory and experiment with high precision is a promising direction to look for potential traces of physics beyond the SM. On the theory side, the calculation of radiative corrections of the strong and electroweak interactions is at the heart of this task, a field that has seen tremendous conceptual and technical progress in the last decades. This review aims at a coherent introduction to the field of electroweak corrections and tries to fill gaps in the literature between standard textbook knowledge and the current state of the art. The SM and the machinery for its perturbative evaluation are reviewed in detail, putting particular emphasis on renormalization, on one-loop techniques, on modern amplitude methods and tools, on the separation of infrared singularities in real-emission corrections, on electroweak issues connected with hadronic initial or final states in collisions, and on the issue of unstable particles in quantum field theory together with corresponding practical solutions.

Mixed NNLO QCD x electroweak corrections of O(N_f α_s α) to single-W/Z production at the LHC

First results on the radiative corrections of order O(N_fα_sα) are presented for the off-shell production of W or Z bosons at the LHC, where N_f is the number of fermion flavours. These corrections comprise all diagrams at O(α_sα) with closed fermion loops, form a gauge-invariant part of the next-to-next-to-leading-order corrections of mixed QCD x electroweak type, and are the ones that concern the issue of mass renormalization of the W and Z resonances. The occurring irreducible two-loop diagrams, which involve only self-energy insertions, are calculated with current standard techniques, and explicit analytical results on the electroweak gauge-boson self-energies at O(α_sα) are given. Moreover, the generalization of the complex-mass scheme for a gauge-invariant treatment of the W/Z resonances is described for the order O(α_sα). While the corrections, which are implemented in the Monte Carlo program RADY, are negligible for observables that are dominated by resonant W/Z bosons, they affect invariant-mass distributions at the level of up to 2% for invariant masses of >500 GeV and are, thus, phenomenologically relevant. The impact on transverse-momentum distributions is similar, taking into account that leading-order predictions to those distributions underestimate the spectrum.

Next-to-leading-order QCD and electroweak corrections to triple-W production with leptonic decays at the LHC

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading-order QCD and electroweak corrections to WWW production with leptonically decaying $\mathrm{W}$ bosons at the LHC, fully taking into account off-shell contributions, intermediary resonances, and spin correlations. The contributions of the quark-antiquark-induced electroweak correction to typical fiducial cross sections at the LHC are of the order of 5-8% and grow to tens of percent in the high-energy tails of distributions. We observe strong cancellations among the positive quark-photon and negative quark-antiquark-induced electroweak corrections. In addition to results based on full $2\to 6/7$-particle next-to-leading-order matrix elements, we present a calculation based on the triple-pole approximation, which expands the matrix elements around the poles of three simultaneously resonant $\mathrm{W}$ bosons. The triple-pole approximation performs particularly well for integrated cross sections and for differential cross sections that are insensitive to off-shell effects, such as angular and rapidity distributions.

PROPHECY4F 3.0: A Monte Carlo program for Higgs-boson decays into four-fermion final states in and beyond the Standard Model

The Monte Carlo generator PPROPHECY4F provides a PROPer description of the Higgs dECaY into 4 Fermions within the Standard Model, the Standard Model with a fourth fermion generation, a simple Higgs-singlet extension of the Standard Model, and the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model. The fully differential predictions include the full QCD and electroweak next-to-leading-order corrections, all interference contributions between different WW/ZZ channels, and all off-shell effects of intermediate W/Z bosons. PPROPHECY4F computes the inclusive partial decay widths and allows for the computation of binned differential distributions of the decay products. For leptonic final states also unweighted events are provided.

Collier: a fortran-based Complex One-Loop LIbrary in Extended Regularizations

We present the library Collier for the numerical evaluation of one-loop scalar and tensor integrals in perturbative relativistic quantum field theories. The code provides numerical results for arbitrary tensor and scalar integrals for scattering processes in general quantum field theories. For tensor integrals either the coefficients in a covariant decomposition or the tensor components themselves are provided. Collier supports complex masses, which are needed in calculations involving unstable particles. Ultraviolet and infrared singularities are treated in dimensional regularization. For soft and collinear singularities mass regularization is available as an alternative.

Dominant $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$ corrections to Drell-Yan processes in the resonance region

Apart from the well-known NNLO QCD and NLO electroweak corrections to W- and Z-boson production at hadron colliders, the most important fixed-order corrections are given by the mixed QCD-electroweak corrections of $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$. The knowledge of these corrections is of particular importance to control the theoretical uncertainties in the upcoming high-precision measurements of the W-boson mass and the effective weak mixing angle at the LHC. Since these observables are dominated by the phase-space regions of resonant W/Z bosons, we address the $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$ corrections in the framework of an expansion about the W/Z poles. Retaining only the leading, resonant contribution in the so-called pole approximation, the corrections can be classified into factorizable and non-factorizable contributions. In this article we review our calculation of the numerically dominant corrections which arise from factorizable corrections of "initial-final" type, i.e. they combine the QCD corrections to the production with the large electroweak corrections to the decay of the W/Z boson. Moreover, we compare our results to simpler approximate combinations of electroweak and QCD corrections based on naive products of NLO QCD and electroweak correction factors and using leading-logarithmic approximations for QED final-state radiation. Finally, we estimate the shift in the W-boson mass that results from the $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$ corrections to the transverse-mass distribution.

Next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to $pp \to W^+W^-\to$ 4 leptons at the LHC

We present results of the first calculation of next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to W-boson pair production at the LHC that fully takes into account leptonic W-boson decays and off-shell effects. Employing realistic event selections, we discuss the corrections in situations that are typical for the study of W-boson pairs as a signal process or of Higgs-boson decays $H\to W W^*$, to which W-boson pair production represents an irreducible background. In particular, we compare the full off-shell results, obtained treating the W-boson resonances in the complex-mass scheme, to previous results in the so-called double-pole approximation, which is based on an expansion of the loop amplitudes about the W resonance poles. At small and intermediate scales, i.e. in particular in angular and rapidity distributions, the two approaches show the expected agreement at the level of fractions of a percent, but larger differences appear in the TeV range. For transverse-momentum distributions, the differences can even exceed the 10% level in the TeV range where "background diagrams" with one instead of two resonant W bosons gain in importance because of recoil effects.

NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to $Z+γ$ production with leptonic Z-boson decays

The next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to $pp\to l^+l^-/\barνν+γ+X$ production, including all off-shell effects of intermediate Z bosons in the complex-mass scheme, are calculated for LHC energies, revealing the typically expected large corrections of tens of percent in the TeV range. Contributions from quark-photon and photon-photon initial states are taken into account as well, but their impact is found to be moderate or small. Moreover, the known next-to-leading-order QCD corrections are reproduced. In order to separate hard photons from jets, both a quark-to-photon fragmentation function á la Glover/Morgan and Frixione's cone isolation are employed. The calculation is available in the form of Monte Carlo programs allowing for the evaluation of arbitrary differential cross sections. Predictions for integrated cross sections are presented for the LHC at 7 TeV, 8 TeV, and 14 TeV, and differential distributions are discussed at 14 TeV for bare muons and dressed leptons. Finally, we consider the impact of anomalous $ZZγ$ and $Zγγ$ couplings.

Dominant mixed QCD-electroweak $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$ corrections to Drell-Yan processes in the resonance region

A precise theoretical description of W- and Z-boson production in the resonance region is essential for the correct interpretation of high-precision measurements of the W-boson mass and the effective weak mixing angle. Currently, the largest unknown fixed-order contribution is given by the mixed QCD-electroweak corrections of $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$. We argue, using the framework of the pole expansion for the NNLO QCD-electroweak corrections established in a previous paper, that the numerically dominant corrections arise from the combination of large QCD corrections to the production with the large electroweak corrections to the decay of the W/Z boson. We calculate these so-called factorizable corrections of "initial-final" type and estimate the impact on the W-boson mass extraction. We compare our results to simpler approximate combinations of electroweak and QCD corrections in terms of naive products of NLO QCD and electroweak correction factors and using leading-logarithmic approximations for QED final-state radiation as provided by the structure-function approach or QED parton-shower programs. We also compute corrections of "final-final" type, which are given by finite counterterms to the leptonic vectorboson decays and are found to be numerically negligible.

NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to W+γ production with leptonic W-boson decays

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to W+γ production, including the leptonic decay of the W boson and taking into account all off-shell effects of the W boson, where the finite width of the W boson is implemented using the complex-mass scheme. Corrections induced by incoming photons are fully included and find particular emphasis in the discussion of phenomenological predictions for the LHC. The corresponding next-to-leading-order QCD corrections are reproduced as well. In order to separate hard photons from jets, a quark-to-photon fragmentation function a la Glover and Morgan is employed. Our results are implemented into Monte Carlo programs allowing for the evaluation of arbitrary differential cross sections. We present integrated cross sections for the LHC at 7TeV, 8TeV, and 14TeV as well as differential distributions at 14TeV for bare muons and dressed leptons. Finally, we discuss the impact of anomalous WWγ couplings.

Non-factorizable photonic corrections to resonant production and decay of many unstable particles

Electroweak radiative corrections to the production of high-multiplicity final states with several intermediate resonances in most cases can be sufficiently well described by the leading contribution of an expansion about the resonance poles. In this approach, also known as pole approximation, corrections are classified into separately gauge-invariant factorizable and non-factorizable corrections, where the former can be attributed to the production and decay of the unstable particles on their mass shell. The remaining non-factorizable corrections are induced by the exchange of soft photons between different production and decay subprocesses. We give explicit analytical results for the non-factorizable photonic virtual corrections to the production of an arbitrary number of unstable particles at the one-loop level and, thus, deliver an essential building block in the calculation of next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections in pole approximation. The remaining virtual factorizable corrections can be obtained with modern automated one-loop matrix-element generators, while the evaluation of the corresponding real photonic corrections can be evaluated with full matrix elements by multi-purpose Monte Carlo generators. Our results can be easily modified to non-factorizable QCD corrections, which are induced by soft-gluon exchange.

Techniques for the treatment of IR divergences in decay processes at NLO and application to the top-quark decay

We present the extension of two general algorithms for the treatment of infrared singularities arising in electroweak corrections to decay processes at next-to-leading order: the dipole subtraction formalism and the one-cutoff slicing method. The former is extended to the case of decay kinematics which has not been considered in the literature so far. The latter is generalized to production and decay processes with more than two charged particles, where new "surface" terms arise. Arbitrary patterns of massive and massless external particles are considered, including the treatment of infrared singularities in dimensional or mass regularization. As an application of the two techniques we present the calculation of the next-to-leading-order QCD and electroweak corrections to the top-quark decay width including all off-shell and decay effects of intermediate W bosons. The result, e.g., represents a building block of a future calculation of NLO electroweak effects to off-shell top-quark pair (WWbb) production. Moreover, this calculation can serve as the first step towards an event generator for top-quark decays at next-to-leading order accuracy, which can be used to attach top-quark decays to complicated many-particle top-quark processes, such as for tt+H or tt+jets.

COLLIER -- A fortran-library for one-loop integrals

We introduce the fortran-library COLLIER for the numerical evaluation of one-loop scalar and tensor integrals in perturbative relativistic quantum field theories. Important features are the implementation of dedicated methods to achieve numerical stability for 3- and 4-point tensor integrals, the support of complex masses for internal particles, and the possibility to choose between dimensional and mass regularization for infrared singularities. COLLIER supports one-loop N-point functions up to currently N=6 and has been tested in various NLO QCD and EW calculations.

Mixed QCD-electroweak O(α_sα) corrections to Drell-Yan processes in the resonance region: pole approximation and non-factorizable corrections

Drell-Yan-like W-boson and Z-boson production in the resonance region allows for high-precision measurements that are crucial to carry experimental tests of the Standard Model to the extremes, such as the determination of the W-boson mass and the effective weak mixing angle. In this article, we establish a framework for the calculation of the mixed QCD-electroweak O(α_sα) corrections to Drell-Yan processes in the resonance region, which are one of the main remaining theoretical uncertainties. We describe how the Standard Model prediction can be successfully performed in terms of a consistent expansion about the resonance poles, which classifies the corrections in terms of factorizable and non-factorizable contributions. The former can be attributed to the W/Z production and decay subprocesses individually, while the latter link production and decay by soft-photon exchange. At next-to-leading order we compare the full electroweak corrections with the pole-expanded approximations, confirming the validity of the approximation. At O(α_sα), we describe the concept of the expansion and explicitly give results on the non-factorizable contributions, which turn out to be phenomenologically negligible. Our results, thus, demonstrate that for phenomenological purposes the O(α_sα) corrections can be factorized into terms associated with initial-state and/or final-state corrections. Moreover, we argue that the factorization properties of the non-factorizable corrections at O(α_sα) from lower-order O(α_s) graphs generalize to any order in O(α_s^nα).

Neutral MSSM Higgs-boson production with heavy quarks: NLO supersymmetric QCD corrections

Within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) the associated production of neutral Higgs bosons with top and bottom quarks belongs to the most important Higgs-boson production processes at the LHC. At large values of tan(beta), in particular, bottom--Higgs associated production constitutes the dominant production channel within the MSSM. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to neutral Higgs production through the parton processes q qbar, gg -> t tbar / b bbar + h/H/A and present results for the total cross sections. The genuine SUSY-QCD corrections are of moderate size for small tan(beta), but can be sizable for large tan(beta). In the latter case the bulk of these corrections can be absorbed into effective bottom Yukawa couplings.

O(α_sα) corrections to Drell-Yan processes in the resonance region

Drell-Yan-like W-boson and Z-boson production in the resonance region allows for some high-precision measurements that are crucial to carry experimental tests of the Standard Model to the extremes, such as the determinations of the W-boson mass and the effective weak mixing angle. We describe how the Standard Model prediction can be successfully performed in terms of a consistent expansion about the resonance pole, which classifies the corrections in terms of factorizable and non-factorizable contributions. The former can be attributed to the W/Z production and decay subprocesses individually, while the latter link production and decay by soft-photon exchange. At next-to-leading order we compare the full electroweak corrections with the pole-expanded approximations, confirming the validity of the approximation. At O(α_sα), we describe the concept of the expansion and report on results on the non-factorizable contributions, which turn out to be phenomenologically negligible. Moreover, we present first (preliminary) results on the dominant factorizable O(α_sα) corrections, which originate from the interplay of initial-state QCD and final-state electroweak corrections. Numerically those corrections significantly differ from a mere product of the two next-to-leading-order correction factors.

Electroweak corrections to monojet production at the Tevatron and the LHC

Single-jet production with missing transverse momentum is one of the most promising discovery channels for new physics at the LHC. In the Standard Model, Z + jet production with a Z-boson decay into neutrinos leads to this monojet signature. To improve the corresponding Standard Model predictions, we present the calculation of the full next-to-leading-order (NLO) electroweak corrections and a recalculation of the NLO QCD corrections to monojet production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We discuss the phenomenological impact on the total cross sections as well as on relevant differential distributions.

Weak radiative corrections to dijet production at the LHC

We summarize the calculation of the weak corrections to dijet production at hadron colliders, comprising tree-level effects of O(α_sα,α^2) and loop corrections of O(α_s^2α). Although suppressed by the small value of the coupling constant α, the weak radiative corrections can become large in the high-energy domain due to the appearance of Sudakov-type and other high-energy logarithms. Generally the corrections to the transverse-momentum distributions are larger by approximately a factor of two compared to the corresponding reach in the invariant-mass distributions, because the invariant-mass distributions are not, unlike the k_T distributions, dominated by the Sudakov regime at high scales. The electroweak tree-level contributions are found to be of the same generic size as the loop corrections.

Gluon-induced Higgs-strahlung at next-to-leading order QCD

Gluon-induced contributions to the associated production of a Higgs and a Z-boson are calculated with NLO accuracy in QCD. They constitute a significant contribution to the cross section for this process. The perturbative correction factor (K-factor) is calculated in the limit of infinite top-quark and vanishing bottom-quark masses. The qualitative similarity of the results to the well-known ones for the gluon-fusion process $gg\to H$ allows to conclude that rescaling the LO prediction by this K-factor leads to a reliable NLO result and realistic error estimate due to missing higher-order perturbative effects. We consider the total inclusive cross section as well as a scenario with a boosted Higgs boson, where the Higgs boson's transverse momentum is restricted to values ptH>200GeV. In both cases, we find large correction factors $K\approx 2$ in most of the parameter space.

NLO QCD corrections to off-shell top-antitop production with leptonic decays at hadron colliders

We present details of a calculation of the cross section for hadronic top-antitop production in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD, including the decays of the top and antitop into bottom quarks and leptons. This calculation is based on matrix elements for νe e+ μ- \barν_μb\bar{b} production and includes all non-resonant diagrams, interferences, and off-shell effects of the top quarks. Such contributions are formally suppressed by the top-quark width and turn out to be small in the inclusive cross section. However, they can be strongly enhanced in exclusive observables that play an important role in Higgs and new-physics searches. Also non-resonant and off-shell effects due to the finite W-boson width are investigated in detail, but their impact is much smaller than naively expected. We also introduce a matching approach to improve NLO calculations involving intermediate unstable particles. Using a fixed QCD scale leads to perturbative instabilities in the high-energy tails of distributions, but an appropriate dynamical scale stabilises NLO predictions. Numerical results for the total cross section, several distributions, and asymmetries are presented for Tevatron and the LHC at 7 TeV, 8 TeV, and 14 TeV.

NLO QCD corrections to off-shell ttbar production at hadron colliders

The production of top-antitop-quark pairs at hadron colliders is interesting both in its own right as signal process, but also as background to many searches for new physics. The corresponding predictions aim at the precision level of few per cent, rendering not only the inclusion of radiative corrections of the strong and electroweak interactions relevant, but also of off-shell and finite-width effects originating from the top-quark decays t -> b W -> b l ν_l / qq'. We report on a calculation for the full process pp -> W^+ W^- b \bar{b} -> ν_e e^+ μ^- ν_μb \bar{b} at next-to-leading order QCD and discuss the effects of the finite widths of the top quarks and of the W bosons for selected observables. Generically it turns out that finite-top-width effects are at the per-cent level whenever the top-quark resonances dominate, but those effects can reach tens of per cent in off-shell tails. Finite-W-width effects, on the other hand, are suppressed to less than 0.5% whenever the top quarks can become resonant and only become sizeable in exceptional cases. One such case, however, is the invariant mass of a bottom quark and the corresponding charged lepton, which result from the same top-quark decay - an observable that is relevant for precision measurements of the top-quark mass.

Weak radiative corrections to dijet production at hadron colliders

We present the calculation of the most important electroweak corrections to dijet production at the LHC and the Tevatron, comprising tree-level effects of O(α_sα,α^2) and weak loop corrections of O(α_s^2α). Although negligible for integrated cross sections, these corrections can reach 10-20% in the TeV range for transverse jet momenta k_T. Our detailed discussion of numerical results comprises distributions in the dijet invariant mass and in the transverse momenta of the leading and subleading jets. We find that the weak loop corrections amount to about -12% and -10% for leading jets with k_T~3TeV at the 14TeV LHC and k_T~800GeV at the Tevatron, respectively. The electroweak tree-level contributions are of the same generic size and typically positive at the LHC and negative at the Tevatron at high energy scales. Generally the corrections to the dijet invariant mass distributions are smaller by at least a factor of two as compared to the corresponding reach in the k_T distributions, because unlike the k_T spectra the invariant-mass distributions are not dominated by the Sudakov regime at high energy scales.

The Z-boson resonance is treated consistently using the complex-mass scheme, and all off-shell effects as well as the contributions of the intermediate photon are taken into account. EW corrections to Higgs strahlung at the Tevatron and the LHC with HAWK

We briefly report on the inclusion of NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to the Higgs-strahlung processes pp/ppbar -> HW/Z -> H+2leptons in the Monte Carlo program HAWK. The electroweak corrections, which are at the level of -(5-10)% for total cross sections, further increase in size with increasing transverse momenta (p_T) in differential cross sections. Electroweak corrections to hadronic event shapes

We report on a recent calculation of the electroweak O(α^3α_s) corrections to 3-jet production and related event-shape observables at e+e- colliders. The calculation properly accounts for the experimental photon isolation criteria and for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section. Corrections to the normalised event-shape distributions, which are exemplarily discussed here for the thrust distribution at LEP and linear-collider energies, turn out to be at the few-per-cent level and show remnants of the radiative return to the Z pole even after inclusion of appropriate cuts.

Electroweak corrections to hadronic event shapes and jet production in e+e- annihilation

We present a complete calculation of the electroweak O(alpha^3 alpha_s) corrections to three-jet production and related event-shape observables at electron--positron colliders. The Z-boson resonance is described within the complex-mass scheme, rendering the calculation valid both in the resonance and off-shell regions. Higher-order initial-state radiation is included in the leading-logarithmic approximation. We properly account for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section and for the experimental photon isolation criteria. To this end we implement contributions of the quark-to-photon fragmentation function both in the slicing and subtraction formalism. The effects of the electroweak corrections on various event-shape distributions and on the three-jet rate are studied. They are typically at the few-per-cent level, and remnants of the radiative return are found even after inclusion of appropriate cuts.

Electroweak precision for W+jet production

In this talk we discuss the next-to-leading-order electroweak (EW) corrections to W-boson + jet hadroproduction [1] and compare the full result to a simple approximation assuming factorization of EW and QCD corrections for the charged-current Drell-Yan process. The W-boson resonance is treated consistently using the complex-mass scheme, and all off-shell effects are taken into account. The corresponding next-to-leading-order QCD corrections have also been recalculated. All the results are implemented in a flexible Monte Carlo code. Selected numerical results for this Standard Model benchmark process are presented for the LHC. The comparison of our result to an approximation based on the EW corrections to W-boson production without additional jets is a step towards a better understanding of the interplay between QCD and EW effects for W-boson production in general.

NLO QCD corrections to top anti-top bottom anti-bottom production at the LHC: 2. full hadronic results

We present predictions for top anti-top bottom anti-bottom production at the LHC in next-to-leading order QCD. The precise description of this background process is a prerequisite to observe associated top anti-top Higgs production in the Higgs -> bottom anti-bottom decay channel and to directly measure the top-quark Yukawa coupling at the LHC. The leading-order cross section is extremely sensitive to scale variations. We observe that the traditional scale choice adopted in ATLAS simulations underestimates the top anti-top bottom anti-bottom background by a factor two and introduce a new dynamical scale that stabilizes the perturbative predictions. We study various kinematic distributions and observe that the corrections have little impact on their shapes if standard cuts are applied. In the regime of highly boosted Higgs bosons, which offers better perspectives to observe the top anti-top Higgs signal, we find significant distortions of the kinematic distributions. The one-loop amplitudes are computed using process-independent algebraic manipulations of Feynman diagrams and numerical tensor reduction. We find that this approach provides very high numerical stability and CPU efficiency.

NLO QCD corrections to WW+jet production including leptonic W decays at hadron colliders

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of W-boson pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and the LHC, which is an important source of background for Higgs and new-physics searches. Leptonic decays of the W bosons are included by applying an improved version of the narrow-width approximation that treats the W bosons as on-shell particles, but keeps the information on the W spin. A selection of differential NLO QCD cross sections is provided both for the LHC and the Tevatron. The QCD corrections stabilize the LO prediction for the cross section with respect to scale variations. The differential LO cross sections are generally not simply rescaled by the corrections. Their shapes are particularly distorted if an additional energy scale is involved.

Production of t anti-t b anti-b at the LHC at NLO QCD

We summarise predictions for top anti-top bottom anti-bottom (tTbB) production at the LHC in next-to-leading order QCD. The precise description of this background process is a prerequisite to observe associated top anti-top Higgs production in the H -> bottom anti-bottom decay channel. The one-loop amplitudes are computed using Feynman diagrams and numerical tensor reduction. This approach provides very high numerical stability and CPU efficiency. We find that the scale choice adopted in ATLAS simulations underestimates the tTbB background by a factor two and introduce a new dynamical scale that stabilises the perturbative predictions. In the regime of highly boosted Higgs bosons, which offers better perspectives to observe the tTH(H-> bB) signal, the corrections induce significant distortions in the kinematic distributions.

Radiative corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan process in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension

An adequate description of the neutral-current Drell-Yan process at the Tevatron and the LHC, in particular, requires the inclusion of electroweak radiative corrections. We extend earlier work in this direction in various ways. First, we define and numerically compare different methods to describe the Z-boson resonance including next-to-leading order electroweak corrections; moreover, we provide explicit analytical expressions for those. Second, we pay particular attention to contributions from photon-photon and photon-quark collisions, which involve photons in the initial state, and work out how their impact can be enhanced by selection cuts. Third, we supplement the O(α) corrections by universal electroweak effects of higher order, such as universal two-loop contributions from Δαand Δρ, and the leading two-loop corrections in the high-energy Sudakov regime as well as multi-photon radiation off muons in the structure-function approach. Finally, we present results on the complete next-to-leading order electroweak and QCD corrections within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model.

Charged-Higgs-boson production at the LHC: NLO supersymmetric QCD corrections

The dominant production process for heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC is the associated production with heavy quarks. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to charged-Higgs production through the parton processes $q\bar{q},gg \to tbH^{\pm}$ and present results for total cross sections and differential distributions. The QCD corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence and thus stabilize the theoretical predictions. We present a comparison of the next-to-leading-order results for the inclusive cross section with a calculation based on bottom--gluon fusion $gb \to tH^{\pm}$ and discuss the impact of the next-to-leading-order corrections on charged-Higgs searches at the LHC.

Electroweak corrections to W + jet hadroproduction including leptonic W-boson decays

This talk summarizes the first calculation of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to W-boson + jet hadroproduction including leptonic W-boson decays [1].

NLO QCD corrections to top anti-top bottom anti-bottom production at the LHC: 1. quark-antiquark annihilation

The process pp -> top anti-top bottom anti-bottom + X represents a very important background reaction to searches at the LHC, in particular to top anti-top H production where the Higgs boson decays into a bottom anti-bottom pair. A successful analysis of top anti-top H at the LHC requires the knowledge of direct top anti-top bottom anti-bottom production at next-to-leading order in QCD. We take the first step in this direction upon calculating the next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the subprocess initiated by quark anti-quark annihilation. We devote an appendix to the general issue of rational terms resulting from ultraviolet or infrared (soft or collinear) singularities within dimensional regularization. There we show that, for arbitrary processes, in the Feynman gauge, rational terms of infrared origin cancel in truncated one-loop diagrams and result only from trivial self-energy corrections.

Higgs Radiation off Bottom Quarks at the Tevatron and the LHC

Higgs-boson production in association with bottom quarks, ppbar/pp -> b bbar H + X, is one of the most important discovery channels for supersymmetric Higgs particles at the Tevatron and the LHC. We have calculated the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the parton processes qqbar,gg -> bbbar H and present results for total cross sections and for distributions in the transverse momenta of the bottom quarks. The QCD corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence and thus stabilize the theoretical predictions, especially when the Higgs boson is produced in association with high-pT bottom quarks. The next-to-leading order predictions for the total cross section are in reasonable numerical agreement with calculations based on bottom-quark fusion bbbar ->H.

Separation of soft and collinear singularities from one-loop N-point integrals

The soft and collinear singularities of general scalar and tensor one-loop N-point integrals are worked out explicitly. As a result a simple explicit formula is given that expresses the singular part in terms of 3-point integrals. Apart from predicting the singularities, this result can be used to transfer singular one-loop integrals from one regularization scheme to another or to subtract soft and collinear singularities from one-loop Feynman diagrams directly in momentum space.

LUSIFER: a LUcid approach to SIx-FERmion production

LUSIFER is a Monte Carlo event generator for all processes e+e-->6fermions, which is based on the multi-channel Monte Carlo integration technique and employs the full set of tree-level diagrams. External fermions are taken to be massless, but can be arbitrarily polarized. The calculation of the helicity amplitudes and of the squared matrix elements is presented in a compact way. Initial-state radiation is included at the leading logarithmic level using the structure-function approach. The discussion of numerical results contains a comprehensive list of cross sections relevant for a 500GeV collider, including a tuned comparison to results obtained with the combination of the WHIZARD and MADGRAPH packages as far as possible. Moreover, for off-shell top-quark pair production and the production of a Higgs boson in the intermediate mass range we additionally discuss some phenomenologically interesting distributions. Finally, we numerically analyze the effects of gauge-invariance violation by comparing various ways of introducing decay widths of intermediate top quarks, gauge and Higgs bosons.

One-loop Singular Behaviour of QCD and SUSY QCD Amplitudes with Massive Partons

We discuss the structure of infrared and ultraviolet singularities in on-shell QCD and supersymmetric QCD amplitudes at one-loop order. Previous results, valid for massless partons, are extended to the case of massive partons. Using dimensional regularization, we present a general factorization formula that controls both the singular epsilon-poles and the logarithmic contributions that become singular for vanishing masses. We introduce generalized Altarelli--Parisi splitting functions and discuss their relations with the singular terms in the amplitudes. The dependence on the regularization scheme is also considered.

A General Approach To Photon Radiation Off Fermions

Soft or collinear photon emission potentially poses numerical problems in the phase-space integration of radiative processes. In this paper, a general subtraction formalism is presented that removes such singularities from the integrand of the numerical integration and adds back the analytically integrated contributions that have been subtracted. The method is a generalization of the dipole formalism of Catani and Seymour, which was formulated for NLO QCD processes with massless unpolarized particles. The presented formalism allows for arbitrary mass and helicity configurations in processes with charged fermions and any other neutral particles. Particular attention is paid to the limit of small fermion masses, in which collinear singularities cause potentially large corrections. The actual application and the efficiency of the formalism are demonstrated by the discussion of photonic corrections to the processes γγ--> t \bar t (γ), e^- γ--> e^- γ(γ), and μ^+ μ^- --> ν_e \barν_e (γ).

Weyl-van-der-Waerden formalism for helicity amplitudes of massive particles

The Weyl-van-der-Waerden spinor technique for calculating helicity amplitudes of massive and massless particles is presented in a form that is particularly well suited to a direct implementation in computer algebra. Moreover, we explain how to exploit discrete symmetries and how to avoid unphysical poles in amplitudes in practice. The efficiency of the formalism is demonstrated by giving explicit compact results for the helicity amplitudes of the processes gamma gamma -> f fbar, f fbar -> gamma gamma gamma, mu^- mu^+ -> f fbar gamma.

Deriving Non-decoupling Effects of Heavy Fields from the Path Integral: a Heavy Higgs Field in an SU(2) Gauge Theory

We describe a method to remove non-decoupling heavy fields from a quantized field theory and to construct a low-energy one-loop effective Lagrangian by integrating out the heavy degrees of freedom in the path integral. We apply this method to the Higgs boson in a spontaneously broken SU(2) gauge theory (gauged linear sigma-model). In this context, the background-field method is generalized to the non-linear representation of the Higgs sector by applying (a generalization of) the Stueckelberg formalism. The (background) gauge-invariant renormalization is discussed. At one loop the log M_H-terms of the heavy-Higgs limit of this model coincide with the UV-divergent terms of the corresponding gauged non-linear sigma-model, but vertex functions differ in addition by finite (constant) terms in both models. These terms are also derived by our method. Diagrammatic calculations of some vertex functions are presented as consistency check.
