Linear power corrections for two-body kinematics in the $q_T$ subtraction formalism

Transverse-momentum cuts on undistinguished particles in two-body final states induce an enhanced sensitivity to low momentum scales. This undesirable feature, which ultimately leads to an instability of the fixed-order series, poses additional challenges to non-local subtraction schemes. In this letter, we address this issue for general colour-singlet processes within the $q_T$-subtraction formalism, focussing on neutral-current Drell-Yan production. We present a simple procedure to reduce the dependence on the slicing parameter from linear to quadratic, by accounting for the linear power corrections through an appropriate recoil prescription. We observe a dramatical improvement of the numerical convergence and a reduction of the systematic uncertainties. We also discuss how a linear dependence in $q_T$ can be avoided for Drell-Yan production by using staggered cuts, which, to the best of our understanding, could be used in experimental analyses. We show that our approach can be successfully applied also to on-shell $ZZ$ production. We finally study diphoton production and verify that our approach is insufficient to capture the linear power corrections introduced by the isolation procedure. The recoil prescription is available in version 2.1 of MATRIX.

Accurate single- and double-differential resummation of colour-singlet processes with MATRIX+RadISH: $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC

We present the combination of fully differential cross sections for colour-singlet production processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD obtained with MATRIX and all-order resummation through RadISH. This interface allows us to achieve unprecedented accuracy for various transverse observables in $2 \rightarrow 2$ production processes. As an important application we consider $W^+ W^-$ production at the LHC, more precisely the full leptonic process $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime\, -}ν_{\ell}{\barν}_{\ell^\prime}+X$ with $\ell'\neq\ell$, and we present resummed predictions for differential distributions in presence of fiducial selection cuts. In particular, we resum the transverse-momentum spectrum of the $W^+ W^-$ pair at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy and match it to the integrated NNLO cross section. The transverse-momentum spectrum of the leading jet in $W^+ W^-$ production is calculated at NNLO+NNLL accuracy. Finally, the joint resummation for the transverse-momentum spectrum of the $W^+ W^-$ pair in the presence of a jet veto is performed at NNLO+NNLL. Our phenomenological study highlights the importance of higher-order perturbative and logarithmic corrections for precision phenomenology at the LHC.

Mixed strong$-$electroweak corrections to the Drell$-$Yan process

We report on the first complete computation of the mixed QCD$-$electroweak (EW) corrections to the neutral-current Drell$-$Yan process. Superseding previously applied approximations, our calculation provides the first result at this order that is valid in the entire range of dilepton invariant masses. The two-loop virtual contribution is computed by using semi-analytical techniques, overcoming the technical problems in the evaluation of the relevant master integrals. The cancellation of soft and collinear singularities is achieved by a formulation of the $q_T$ subtraction formalism valid in presence of charged massive particles in the final state. We present numerical results for the fiducial cross section and selected kinematical distributions. At large values of the lepton $p_T$ the mixed QCD$-$EW corrections are negative and increase in size, to about $-15\%$ with respect to the next-to-leading-order QCD result at $p_T=500\,$GeV. Up to dilepton invariant masses of 1 TeV the computed corrections amount to about $-1.5\%$ with respect to the next-to-leading-order QCD result.

Triphoton production at hadron colliders in NNLO QCD

We present next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of three isolated photons in hadronic collisions at the fully differential level. We employ qT subtraction within MATRIX and an efficient implementation of analytic two-loop amplitudes in the leading-colour approximation to achieve the first on-the-fly calculation for this process at NNLO accuracy. Numerical results are presented for proton-proton collisions at energies ranging from 7 TeV to 100 TeV. We find full agreement with the 8 TeV results of arXiv:1911.00479 and confirm that NNLO corrections are indispensable to describe ATLAS 8 TeV data. In addition, we demonstrate the significance of NNLO corrections for future precision studies of triphoton production at higher collision energies.

$W^+W^-$ production at the LHC: NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion channel

We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion contribution in $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC. We consider the full leptonic process $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime\, -}ν_{\ell}{\barν}_{\ell^\prime}+X$, by including resonant and non-resonant diagrams, spin correlations and off-shell effects. Quark-gluon partonic channels are included for the first time in the calculation, and our results are combined with NNLO predictions to the quark annihilation channel at the fully differential level. The computed corrections, which are formally of ${\cal O}(α_{\mathrm{S}}^3)$, increase the NNLO cross section by only about 2%, but have an impact on the shapes of kinematical distributions, in part due to the jet veto, which is usually applied to reduce the top-quark background. Our results, supplemented with NLO EW effects, provide the most advanced fixed-order predictions available to date for this process, and are compared with differential ATLAS data at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV.

$ZZ$ production at the LHC: NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion channel

We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of four charged leptons in hadron collisions. We present the computation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion contribution. Our predictions include, for the first time, also the quark-gluon partonic channels. The computed corrections, which are formally of ${\cal O}(α_{\rm s}^3)$, turn out to increase the loop-induced Born-level result by an amount ranging from 75% to 71% as $\sqrt{s}$ ranges from 8 to 13 TeV. We combine our result with state-of-the-art NNLO corrections to the quark annihilation channel, and present updated predictions for fiducial cross sections and distributions for this process.

NNLO QCD+NLO EW with MATRIX+OpenLoops: precise predictions for vector-boson pair production

We present the first combination of NNLO QCD and NLO EW corrections for vector-boson pair production at the LHC. We consider all final states with two, three and four charged leptons, including resonant and non-resonant diagrams, spin correlations and off-shell effects. Detailed predictions are discussed for three representative channels corresponding to $W^+W^-$, $W^{\pm}Z$ and $ZZ$ production. Both QCD and EW corrections are very significant, and the details of their combination can play a crucial role to achieve the level of precision demanded by experimental analyses. In this context we point out nontrivial issues that arise at large transverse momenta, where the EW corrections are strongly enhanced by Sudakov logarithms and the QCD corrections can feature so-called giant K-factors. Our calculations have been carried out in the MATRIX+OpenLoops framework and can be extended to the production of an arbitrary colour singlet in hadronic collisions, provided that the required two-loop QCD amplitudes are available. Combined NNLO QCD and NLO EW predictions for the full set of massive diboson processes will be made publicly available in the next release of MATRIX and will be instrumental in advancing precision diboson studies and new-physics searches at the LHC and future hadron colliders.

Top-quark pair hadroproduction at NNLO: differential predictions with the MSbar mass

We consider top-quark pair production at the LHC within the MSbar scheme for the renormalisation of the top-quark mass, and we present predictions for total and differential cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. Our state-of-the-art calculation extends the available differential results by one order in the perturbative expansion, and it is relevant for a precise determination of the top-quark mass, including possible effects of the running mass in the MSbar scheme. We consider variations of the scale at which the MSbar mass of the top quark is evaluated, extending the usual 7-point to a 15-point scale variation. This additional variation is crucial for a reliable estimate of the theoretical uncertainties, especially at low perturbative orders and close to the production threshold of the top-quark pair. We also compute, for the first time, the invariant-mass distribution of the top-quark pair by using a running mass, evaluated at a dynamic scale. Our predictions for the invariant-mass distribution in the MSbar scheme are compared with a recent measurement performed by the CMS Collaboration. We observe that the inclusion of the NNLO corrections improves the agreement with the data, and we discuss effects due to the QCD running of the MSbar mass of the top quark.

$W^{\pm}Z$ production at hadron colliders in NNLO QCD

We report on the first computation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to $W^{\pm}Z$ production in proton collisions. We consider both the inclusive production of on-shell $W^{\pm}Z$ pairs at LHC energies and the total $W^{\pm}Z$ rates including off-shell effects of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons. In the off-shell computation, the invariant mass of the lepton pairs from the $Z$ boson decay is required to be in a given mass window, and the results are compared with the corresponding measurements obtained by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. The NNLO corrections range from 8% at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV to 11% at $\sqrt{s}$=14 TeV and significantly improve the agreement with the LHC data at $\sqrt{s}$=7 and 8 TeV.

$W^+W^-$ production at the LHC: fiducial cross sections and distributions in NNLO QCD

We consider QCD radiative corrections to $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC and present the first fully differential predictions for this process at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. Our computation consistently includes the leptonic decays of the $W$ bosons, taking into account spin correlations, off-shell effects and non-resonant contributions. Detailed predictions are presented for the different-flavour channel $pp\toμ^+e^-ν_μ{\bar ν}_e+X$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ and $13$ TeV. In particular, we discuss fiducial cross sections and distributions in the presence of standard selection cuts used in experimental $W^+W^-$ and $H\to W^+W^-$ analyses at the LHC. The inclusive $W^+W^-$ cross section receives large NNLO corrections, and, due to the presence of a jet veto, typical fiducial cuts have a sizeable influence on the behaviour of the perturbative expansion. The availability of differential NNLO predictions, both for inclusive and fiducial observables, will play an important role in the rich physics programme that is based on precision studies of $W^+W^-$ signatures at the LHC.

Differential Higgs Boson Pair Production at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

We report on the first fully differential calculation for double Higgs boson production through gluon fusion in hadron collisions up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. The calculation is performed in the heavy-top limit of the Standard Model, and in the phenomenological results we focus on pp collisions at 14 TeV. We present differential distributions through NNLO for various observables including the transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions of the two Higgs bosons. NNLO corrections are at the level of 10%-25% with respect to the next-to-leading order (NLO) prediction with a residual scale uncertainty of 5%-15% and an overall mild phase-space dependence. Only at NNLO the perturbative expansion starts to converge yielding overlapping scale uncertainty bands between NNLO and NLO in most of the phase-space. The calculation includes NLO predictions for pp -> HH+jet+X. Corrections to the corresponding distributions exceed 50% with a residual scale dependence of 20%-30%.

NLO QCD+EW predictions for V+jets including off-shell vector-boson decays and multijet merging

We present next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions including QCD and electroweak (EW) corrections for the production and decay of off-shell electroweak vector bosons in association with up to two jets at the 13 TeV LHC. All possible dilepton final states with zero, one or two charged leptons that can arise from off-shell W and Z bosons or photons are considered. All predictions are obtained using the automated implementation of NLO QCD+EW corrections in the OpenLoops matrix-element generator combined with the Munich and Sherpa Monte Carlo frameworks. Electroweak corrections play an especially important role in the context of BSM searches, due to the presence of large EW Sudakov logarithms at the TeV scale. In this kinematic regime, important observables such as the jet transverse momentum or the total transverse energy are strongly sensitive to multijet emissions. As a result, fixed-order NLO QCD+EW predictions are plagued by huge QCD corrections and poor theoretical precision. To remedy this problem we present an approximate method that allows for a simple and reliable implementation of NLO EW corrections in the MEPS@NLO multijet merging framework. Using this general approach we present an inclusive simulation of vector-boson production in association with jets that guarantees NLO QCD+EW accuracy in all phase space regions involving up to two resolved jets.

Wgamma and Zgamma production at the LHC in NNLO QCD

We consider the production of Wgamma and Zgamma pairs at the LHC, and report on the fully differential computation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections in QCD perturbation theory. The calculation includes leptonic vector-boson decays with the corresponding spin correlations, off-shell effects and final-state photon radiation. We present numerical results for pp collisions at 7 TeV, and compare them with available ATLAS data. In the case of Zgamma production, the impact of NNLO corrections is generally moderate, ranging from 8% to 17%, depending on the applied cuts. In the case of Wgamma production, the NNLO effects are more important, and range from 19% to 26%, thereby improving the agreement of the theoretical predictions with the data. As expected, a veto against jets significantly reduces the impact of QCD radiative corrections.

NLO electroweak automation and precise predictions for W+multijet production at the LHC

We present a fully automated implementation of next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) corrections in the OpenLoops matrix-element generator combined with the Sherpa and Munich Monte Carlo frameworks. The process-independent character of the implemented algorithms opens the door to NLO QCD+EW simulations for a vast range of Standard Model processes, up to high particle multiplicity, at current and future colliders. As a first application, we present NLO QCD+EW predictions for the production of positively charged on-shell W bosons in association with up to three jets at the Large Hadron Collider. At the TeV energy scale, due to the presence of large Sudakov logarithms, EW corrections reach the 20-40% level and play an important role for searches of physics beyond the Standard Model. The dependence of NLO EW effects on the jet multiplicity is investigated in detail, and we find that W+multijet final states feature genuinely different EW effects as compared to the case of W+1jet.

In this talk we present a fully automated implementation of next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) corrections in OpenLoops together with Sherpa and Munich. As a first application, we present NLO QCD+EW predictions for the production of positively charged W bosons in association with up to three jets and for the production of a Z boson or photon in association with one jet.

Transverse-momentum resummation for vector-boson pair production at NNLL+NNLO

We consider the transverse-momentum ($p_T$) distribution of $ZZ$ and $W^+W^-$ boson pairs produced in hadron collisions. At small $p_T$, the logarithmically enhanced contributions due to multiple soft-gluon emission are resummed to all orders in QCD perturbation theory. At intermediate and large values of $p_T$, we consistently combine resummation with the known fixed-order results. We exploit the most advanced perturbative information that is available at present: next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic resummation combined with the next-to-next-to-leading fixed-order calculation. After integration over $p_T$, we recover the known next-to-next-to-leading order result for the inclusive cross section. We present numerical results at the LHC, together with an estimate of the corresponding uncertainties. We also study the rapidity dependence of the $p_T$ spectrum and we consider $p_T$ efficiencies at different orders of resummed and fixed-order perturbation theory.

Wgamma and Zgamma production at the LHC in NNLO QCD

We consider the production of $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ pairs at hadron colliders. We report on the complete fully differential computation of radiative corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. The calculation includes the leptonic decay of the vector boson with the corresponding spin correlations, off shell effects and final-state photon radiation. We present numerical results for $pp$ collisions at 7 and 8 TeV and we compare them with available LHC data. In the case of $Zγ$ production, the impact of NNLO corrections is generally moderate, ranging from 8% to 18%, depending on the applied cuts. In the case of $Wγ$ production, the NNLO effects are more important, and range from 19% to 26%, thereby improving the agreement of the theoretical predictions with the data. As expected, the impact of QCD radiative corrections is significantly reduced when a jet veto is applied.

ZZ production at the LHC: fiducial cross sections and distributions in NNLO QCD

We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of four charged leptons in the ZZ signal region at the LHC. We report on the complete calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to this process in QCD perturbation theory. Numerical results are presented for $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV, using typical selection cuts applied by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. The NNLO corrections increase the NLO fiducial cross section by about $15\%$, and they have a relatively small impact on the shape of the considered kinematical distributions. In the case of the $ΔΦ$ distribution of the two Z candidates, the NNLO corrections improve the agreement of the theoretical prediction with the CMS data.

The Monte Carlo integrator HAWK provides precision predictions for Higgs production at hadron colliders in vector-boson fusion and Higgs strahlung, i.e. in production processes where the Higgs boson is Attached to WeaK bosons. The fully differential predictions include the full QCD and electroweak next-to-leading-order corrections. Results are computed as integrated cross sections and as binned distributions for important hadron-collider observables.

NLO QCD corrections to off-shell top-antitop production with leptonic decays at hadron colliders

We present details of a calculation of the cross section for hadronic top-antitop production in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD, including the decays of the top and antitop into bottom quarks and leptons. This calculation is based on matrix elements for νe e+ μ- \barν_μb\bar{b} production and includes all non-resonant diagrams, interferences, and off-shell effects of the top quarks. Such contributions are formally suppressed by the top-quark width and turn out to be small in the inclusive cross section. However, they can be strongly enhanced in exclusive observables that play an important role in Higgs and new-physics searches. Also non-resonant and off-shell effects due to the finite W-boson width are investigated in detail, but their impact is much smaller than naively expected. We also introduce a matching approach to improve NLO calculations involving intermediate unstable particles. Using a fixed QCD scale leads to perturbative instabilities in the high-energy tails of distributions, but an appropriate dynamical scale stabilises NLO predictions. Numerical results for the total cross section, several distributions, and asymmetries are presented for Tevatron and the LHC at 7 TeV, 8 TeV, and 14 TeV.

NLO QCD corrections to off-shell ttbar production at hadron colliders

The production of top-antitop-quark pairs at hadron colliders is interesting both in its own right as signal process, but also as background to many searches for new physics. The corresponding predictions aim at the precision level of few per cent, rendering not only the inclusion of radiative corrections of the strong and electroweak interactions relevant, but also of off-shell and finite-width effects originating from the top-quark decays t -> b W -> b l ν_l / qq'. We report on a calculation for the full process pp -> W^+ W^- b \bar{b} -> ν_e e^+ μ^- ν_μb \bar{b} at next-to-leading order QCD and discuss the effects of the finite widths of the top quarks and of the W bosons for selected observables. Generically it turns out that finite-top-width effects are at the per-cent level whenever the top-quark resonances dominate, but those effects can reach tens of per cent in off-shell tails. Finite-W-width effects, on the other hand, are suppressed to less than 0.5% whenever the top quarks can become resonant and only become sizeable in exceptional cases. One such case, however, is the invariant mass of a bottom quark and the corresponding charged lepton, which result from the same top-quark decay - an observable that is relevant for precision measurements of the top-quark mass.

NLO QCD corrections to W+ W+ jj production in vector-boson fusion at the LHC

We present a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation for e+νeμ+νμjj production in vector-boson fusion, i.e. the scattering of two positively charged W bosons at the LHC. We include the complete set of electroweak leading-order diagrams for the six-particle final state and quantitatively assess the size of the s-channel and interference contributions in VBF kinematics. The calculation uses the complex-mass scheme to describe the W-boson resonances and is implemented into a flexible Monte Carlo generator. Using a dynamical scale based on the transverse momenta of the jets, the QCD corrections stay below about 10% for all considered observables, while the residual scale dependence is at the level of 1%.

EW corrections to Higgs strahlung at the Tevatron and the LHC with HAWK

We briefly report on the inclusion of NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to the Higgs-strahlung processes pp/ppbar -> HW/Z -> H+2leptons in the Monte Carlo program HAWK. The electroweak corrections, which are at the level of -(5-10)% for total cross sections, further increase in size with increasing transverse momenta (p_T) in differential cross sections. For instance, for p_{T,H}>200GeV, which is the interesting range at the LHC, the electroweak corrections to WH production reach about -15% for M_H=120GeV.

NLO QCD corrections to WW+jet production including leptonic W decays at hadron colliders

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of W-boson pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and the LHC, which is an important source of background for Higgs and new-physics searches. Leptonic decays of the W bosons are included by applying an improved version of the narrow-width approximation that treats the W bosons as on-shell particles, but keeps the information on the W spin. A selection of differential NLO QCD cross sections is provided both for the LHC and the Tevatron. The QCD corrections stabilize the LO prediction for the cross section with respect to scale variations. The differential LO cross sections are generally not simply rescaled by the corrections. Their shapes are particularly distorted if an additional energy scale is involved.
