Magnetic phase diagram of sigma-phase Fe55Re45 compound in the H-T coordinates

In-field DC and AC magnetization measurements were carried out on a sigma-phase Fe55Re45 intermetallic compound aimed at determination of the magnetic phase diagram in the H-T plane. Field cooled, M_FC, and zero-field cooled, M_ZFC, DC magnetization curves were measured in the magnetic field, H, up to 1200 Oe. AC magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out at a constant frequency of 1465 Hz under DC fields up to H=500 Oe. The obtained results provide evidences for re-entrant magnetism in the investigated sample. The magnetic phase diagrams in the H-T plane have been outlined based on characteristic temperatures determined from the DC and AC measurements. The phase diagrams are similar yet not identical. The main difference is that in the DC diagram constructed there are two cross-over transitions within the strong-irreversibility spin-glass state, whereas in the AC susceptibility based diagram only one transition is observed. The border lines (irreversibility, cross-over) can be described in terms of the power laws.

Application of the Mössbauer spectroscopy to study harmonically modulated electronic structures: case study of charge- and spin-density waves in Cr and its alloys

Relevance of the Mössbauer spectroscopy in the study of harmonically modulated electronic structures i.e. spin-density waves (SDWs) and charge-density waves (CDWs) is presented and discussed. First, the effect of various parameters pertinent to the SDWs and CDWs is outlined on simulated 119Sn spectra and distributions of the hyperfine field and the isomer shift. Next, various examples of the 119Sn spectra measured on single-crystals and polycrystalline samples of Cr and Cr-V are reviewed.

Effect of He-ion irradiation on short-range ordering in model (EFDA) Fe-Cr alloys

The effect of He-ion irradiation on a short-range ordering in model Fe100-xCrx (x=5.8, 10.75, 15.15) was studied by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The alloys were irradiated to the dose of 7.5 dpa with ions of 0.25 and 2.0 MeV. The short-range order was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley parameters: alpha1 (for the first nearest-neighbor shell), alpha2 (for the second nearest-neighbor shell) and alpha12 (for both shells). For all alloys and both energies a clustering of Cr atoms was revealed, as far as alpha1 and alpha2 are considered, yet its degree was found to be both concentration and energy dependent. The average short-range order parameter, alpha12, exhibits, however, a cross-over transition at x=10 from ordering into clustering. The strongest effect of energy occurs at x=5.8 and the weakest one at x=10.75.

AC magnetic susceptibility study of a sigma-phase Fe65.9V34.1 alloy

A sigma-phase Fe65.9V34.1 alloy was investigated with the AC magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature, frequency and external magnetic field. An evidence was found that its magnetism shows features characteristic of a reentrant behavior viz. two transitions: first at TC ca.312K from the paramagnetic state into the collinear ferromagnetic one, and second at Tf ca.302K to a mixed state (sometimes termed as a ferromagnetic re-entrant spin glass) which, finally, at a lower temperature (TRSG ca.60K) transforms to a state where replica symmetry is broken. The frequency dependence of Tf is lower than that of canonical spin glasses, a feature, that in the light of a high concentration of magnetic carriers, can be understood in terms of a weak coupling between magnetic clusters.

Change of Cr atoms distribution in Fe85Cr15 alloy caused by 250 keV He+ ion irradiation to different doses

Redistribution of Cr atoms in a Fe85Cr15 alloy caused by its irradiation with 250 keV He ions to different doses viz. 5, 10 and 30 dpa was investigated by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The redistribution was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley short-range order parameters alpha1, alpha2 and alpha12 pertaining to the first, second and both neighbor shells, respectively. Clear evidence was found, both for non-irradiated and irradiated samples that the actual distribution of Cr atoms is characteristic of the shell, and for a given shell it depends on the irradiation dose. In particular, alpha1 is positive, hence indicates an under population of Cr atoms in 1NN with respect to the random case, alpha2 is negative, giving evidence thereby that 2NN is overpopulated by Cr atoms, and alpha12 is weakly positive. Under the applied irradiation the number of Cr atoms in both neighbor shells decreased signifying thereby a clustering of Cr atoms. The underlying decrease of Cr concentration within the two-shells volume around the probe Fe atoms was estimated at 1.5 at% ranging between 2.1 for the lowest and 0.8 at% for the highest dose.

Effect of quenching medium on short-range order in Fe-rich Fe-Cr alloys

Effect of a quenching medium (water, liquid nitrogen and block of brass) on a short-range ordering in Fe(100-x)Cr(x) (x less than 19) alloys was studied with the Moessbauer spectroscopy. The distribution of Cr atoms was expressed in terms of the Cowley-Warren short-range order (SRO) parameters: alpha1 for the first neighbor-shell, alpha2 for the second neighbor-shell and alpha12 for both neighbor-shells. It was revealed that none of the quenching media resulted in a random distribution of atoms, yet the degree of randomness was the highest for the samples quenched onto the block of brass. The quenching into water and liquid nitrogen caused a partial oxidation of samples surface accompanied by a chromium depletion of the bulk. Quantitative analysis of various phases in the studied samples both in their bulk as well as in pre surface zones was carried out.

Phase-decomposition-related short-range ordering in a Fe-Cr alloy

A redistribution of Cr atoms related to a phase decomposition (PD) caused by an isothermal annealing at 415 C in a 15.15 at%Cr Fe-Cr alloy was studied in an ex-situ way by the conversion electrons Mössbauer spectroscopy. Analysis of the spectra in terms of a two-shell model enabled determination of probabilities of 17 different atomic configurations and average numbers of Cr atoms within the first (1NN) and the second (2NN) neighbor shells versus annealing time, separately. The annealing-time evolution of these numbers, expressed in terms of the Cowley-Warren short-range order (SRO) parameters, was shown to follow the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolgomorov equation. The SRO-parameter averaged over the 1NN-2NN shells was revealed to be linearly correlated with the average hyperfine field. Signatures in favor of the nucleation and growth mechanisms responsible for PD are discussed, too.

Theoretical study of magnetic properties and hyperfine interactions in $σ$-FeV alloys

Electronic structure Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker calculations for the $σ$-phase in Fe$_{100-x}$V$_x$ were performed in compositional range of its occurance ($\sim 34 \le x \le \sim 65$). Fe and V magnetic moments and hyperfine fields were determined for five inequivalent lattice sites in two models of magnetic structure, namely ferromagnetic FM and so-called anti-parallel one, APM, dominated by antiferromagnetic coupling. The average magnetic moments calculated for FM state overestimate the experimental data, whereas the corresponding quantities computed for APM state, underestimate them. Such a behavior remains in line with total energy values being similar for both models. The calculations showed that both average magnetic moments and hyperfine fields (on Fe and V atoms) vary with a number of Fe atoms in the nearest neighbor shell, $NN_{Fe}$, starting from critical values of $NN_{Fe}$, characteristic of each site. The calculated hyperfine fields for Fe and V showed an important role of valence contributions, being strongly dependent on local magnetic moments arrangements. In the case of Fe, the computed hyperfine fields are overestimated with respect to the Mossbauer data, while the corresponding values for V are underestimated with respect to the NMR results. However, the linear correlation between average magnetic moment and hyperfine fields, observed experimentally in FeV $σ$-phase, can be well reproduced when combining theoretical results for the two above-mentioned magnetic structure models.

On the Debye temperature in sigma-phase Fe-V alloys

A series of sigma-phase Fe_{100-x}V_x samples with 34.4 < x < 59.0 were investigated by neutron and X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS) techniques. The first two methods were used for verification of the transformation from alpha to sigma phase and they also permitted to determine lattice parameters of the unit cell. With MS the Debye temperature, T_D, was evaluated from the temperature dependence of the centre shift, <CS>, assuming its entire temperature dependence originates from the second-order Doppler shift. To our best knowledge, it is the first ever-reported study on T_D in sigma-FeV alloys. Both attice parameters i.e. a and c were revealed to linearly increase with x. T_D shows, however, a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of composition with its extreme values between 425K for x=40 and 600K for x=59. A local maximum of 525K was found to exist at x=43.

Site Occupancy and Lattice Parameters in Sigma-Phase Co-Cr alloys

Neutron diffraction technique was used to study distribution of Co and Cr atoms over different lattice sites as well as lattice paramaters in sigma-phase Co100-xCrx compounds with x = 57.0, 62.7 and 65.8. From the diffractograms recorded in the temperature range of 4.2 - 300 K it was found that all five sites A, B, C, D and E are populated by both kinds of atoms. Sites A and D are predominantly occupied by Co atoms while sites B, C and E by Cr atoms. The unit cell parameters a and c, hence the unit cell volume, increase with x, the increase being characteristic of the lattice paramater and temperature. Both a and c show a non-linear increase with temperature.

Magnetic ordering above room temperature in the sigma-phase of Fe66V34

Magnetic properties of four sigma-phase Fe_(100-x)V_x samples with 34.4<x<55.1 were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements in the temperature interval 5-300 K. Four magnetic quantities viz. hyperfine field, Curie temperature, magnetic moment and susceptibility were determined. The sample containing 34.4 at% V was revealed to exhibit the largest values found up to now for the sigma-phase for average hyperfine field, B = 12.1 T, average magnetic moment per Fe atom, m = 0.89 mB, and Curie temperature, TC = 315.5 K. The quantities were shown to be strongly correlated with each other. In particular, TC is linearly correlated with m with a slope of 406.5 K/mB, as well as B is so correlated with m yielding 14.3 T/mB for the hyperfine coupling constant.
