Effect of quenching medium on short-range order in Fe-rich Fe-Cr alloys

Effect of a quenching medium (water, liquid nitrogen and block of brass) on a short-range ordering in Fe(100-x)Cr(x) (x less than 19) alloys was studied with the Moessbauer spectroscopy. The distribution of Cr atoms was expressed in terms of the Cowley-Warren short-range order (SRO) parameters: alpha1 for the first neighbor-shell, alpha2 for the second neighbor-shell and alpha12 for both neighbor-shells. It was revealed that none of the quenching media resulted in a random distribution of atoms, yet the degree of randomness was the highest for the samples quenched onto the block of brass. The quenching into water and liquid nitrogen caused a partial oxidation of samples surface accompanied by a chromium depletion of the bulk. Quantitative analysis of various phases in the studied samples both in their bulk as well as in pre surface zones was carried out.

Sigma-phase in Fe-Cr and Fe-V alloy systems and its physical properties

A review is presented on physical properties of the sigma-phase in Fe-Cr and Fe-V alloy systems as revealed both with experimental -- mostly with the Mossbauer spectroscopy -- and theoretical methods. In particular, the following questions relevant to the issue have been addressed: identification of sigma and determination of its structural properties, kinetics of alpha-to-sigma and sigma-to-alpha phase transformations, Debye temperature and Fe-partial phonon density of states, Curie temperature and magnetization, hyperfine fields, isomer shifts and electric field gradients.

Theoretical study of magnetic properties and hyperfine interactions in $σ$-FeV alloys

Electronic structure Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker calculations for the $σ$-phase in Fe$_{100-x}$V$_x$ were performed in compositional range of its occurance ($\sim 34 \le x \le \sim 65$). Fe and V magnetic moments and hyperfine fields were determined for five inequivalent lattice sites in two models of magnetic structure, namely ferromagnetic FM and so-called anti-parallel one, APM, dominated by antiferromagnetic coupling. The average magnetic moments calculated for FM state overestimate the experimental data, whereas the corresponding quantities computed for APM state, underestimate them. Such a behavior remains in line with total energy values being similar for both models. The calculations showed that both average magnetic moments and hyperfine fields (on Fe and V atoms) vary with a number of Fe atoms in the nearest neighbor shell, $NN_{Fe}$, starting from critical values of $NN_{Fe}$, characteristic of each site. The calculated hyperfine fields for Fe and V showed an important role of valence contributions, being strongly dependent on local magnetic moments arrangements. In the case of Fe, the computed hyperfine fields are overestimated with respect to the Mossbauer data, while the corresponding values for V are underestimated with respect to the NMR results. However, the linear correlation between average magnetic moment and hyperfine fields, observed experimentally in FeV $σ$-phase, can be well reproduced when combining theoretical results for the two above-mentioned magnetic structure models.

On the Debye temperature in sigma-phase Fe-V alloys

A series of sigma-phase Fe_{100-x}V_x samples with 34.4 < x < 59.0 were investigated by neutron and X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS) techniques. The first two methods were used for verification of the transformation from alpha to sigma phase and they also permitted to determine lattice parameters of the unit cell. With MS the Debye temperature, T_D, was evaluated from the temperature dependence of the centre shift, <CS>, assuming its entire temperature dependence originates from the second-order Doppler shift. To our best knowledge, it is the first ever-reported study on T_D in sigma-FeV alloys. Both attice parameters i.e. a and c were revealed to linearly increase with x. T_D shows, however, a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of composition with its extreme values between 425K for x=40 and 600K for x=59. A local maximum of 525K was found to exist at x=43.

Site Occupancy and Lattice Parameters in Sigma-Phase Co-Cr alloys

Neutron diffraction technique was used to study distribution of Co and Cr atoms over different lattice sites as well as lattice paramaters in sigma-phase Co100-xCrx compounds with x = 57.0, 62.7 and 65.8. From the diffractograms recorded in the temperature range of 4.2 - 300 K it was found that all five sites A, B, C, D and E are populated by both kinds of atoms. Sites A and D are predominantly occupied by Co atoms while sites B, C and E by Cr atoms. The unit cell parameters a and c, hence the unit cell volume, increase with x, the increase being characteristic of the lattice paramater and temperature. Both a and c show a non-linear increase with temperature.

Magnetic ordering above room temperature in the sigma-phase of Fe66V34

Magnetic properties of four sigma-phase Fe_(100-x)V_x samples with 34.4<x<55.1 were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements in the temperature interval 5-300 K. Four magnetic quantities viz. hyperfine field, Curie temperature, magnetic moment and susceptibility were determined. The sample containing 34.4 at% V was revealed to exhibit the largest values found up to now for the sigma-phase for average hyperfine field, B = 12.1 T, average magnetic moment per Fe atom, m = 0.89 mB, and Curie temperature, TC = 315.5 K. The quantities were shown to be strongly correlated with each other. In particular, TC is linearly correlated with m with a slope of 406.5 K/mB, as well as B is so correlated with m yielding 14.3 T/mB for the hyperfine coupling constant.
