Theoretical developments in the SMEFT at dimension-8 and beyond

In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension-9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the $1/Λ$ expansion for certain SMEFT observables as well as the current status of renormalization group running and implications for positivity, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses.

Beurling-Selberg Extremization and Modular Bootstrap at High Energies

We consider previously derived upper and lower bounds on the number of operators in a window of scaling dimensions $[Δ- δ,Δ+ δ]$ at asymptotically large $Δ$ in 2d unitary modular invariant CFTs. These bounds depend on a choice of functions that majorize and minorize the characteristic function of the interval $[Δ- δ,Δ+ δ]$ and have Fourier transforms of finite support. The optimization of the bounds over this choice turns out to be exactly the Beurling-Selberg extremization problem, widely known in analytic number theory. We review solutions of this problem and present the corresponding bounds on the number of operators for any $δ\geq 0$. When $2δ\in \mathbb Z_{\geq 0}$ the bounds are saturated by known partition functions with integer-spaced spectra. Similar results apply to operators of fixed spin and Virasoro primaries in $c>1$ theories.

Bounds on the density of states and the spectral gap in CFT$_{2}$

We improve the recently discovered upper and lower bounds on the $O(1)$ correction to the Cardy formula for the density of states integrated over an energy window (of width $2δ$), centered at high energy in 2 dimensional conformal field theory. We prove optimality of the lower bound for $δ\to 1^{-}$. We prove a conjectured upper bound on the asymptotic gap between two consecutive Virasoro primaries for a central charge greater than $1,$ demonstrating it to be $1.$ Furthermore, a systematic method is provided to establish a limit on how tight the bound on the $O(1)$ correction to the Cardy formula can be made using bandlimited functions. The techniques and the functions used here are of generic importance whenever the Tauberian theorems are used to estimate some physical quantities.

Tauberian-Cardy formula with spin

We prove a $2$ dimensional Tauberian theorem in context of $2$ dimensional conformal field theory. The asymptotic density of states with conformal weight $(h,\bar{h})\to (\infty,\infty)$ for any arbitrary spin is derived using the theorem. We further rigorously show that the error term is controlled by the twist parameter and insensitive to spin. The sensitivity of the leading piece towards spin is discussed. We identify a universal piece in microcanonical entropy when the averaging window is large. An asymptotic spectral gap on $(h,\bar{h})$ plane, hence the asymptotic twist gap is derived. We prove an universal inequality stating that in a compact unitary $2$D CFT without any conserved current $Ag\leq \frac{π(c-1)r^2}{24}$ is satisfied, where $g$ is the twist gap over vacuum and $A$ is the minimal "areal gap", generalizing the minimal gap in dimension to $(h',\bar{h}')$ plane and $r=\frac{4\sqrt{3}}π\simeq 2.21$. We investigate density of states in the regime where spin is parametrically larger than twist with both going to infinity. Moreover, the large central charge regime is studied. We also probe finite twist, large spin behavior of density of states.

Bound on asymptotics of magnitude of three point coefficients in 2D CFT

We use methods inspired from complex Tauberian theorems to make progress in understanding the asymptotic behavior of the magnitude of heavy-light-heavy three point coefficients rigorously. The conditions and the precise sense of averaging, which can lead to exponential suppression of such coefficients are investigated. We derive various bounds for the typical average value of the magnitude of heavy-light-heavy three point coefficients and verify them numerically.

Anisotropic models are unitary: A rejuvenation of standard quantum cosmology

The present work proves that the folk-lore of the pathology of non-conservation of probability in quantum anisotropic models is wrong. It is shown in full generality that all operator ordering can lead to a Hamiltonian with a self-adjoint extension as long as it is constructed to be a symmetric operator, thereby making the problem of non-unitarity in context of anisotropic homogeneous model a ghost. Moreover, it is indicated that the self-adjoint extension is not unique and this non-uniqueness is suspected not to be a feature of Anisotropic model only, in the sense that there exists operator orderings such that Hamiltonian for an isotropic homogeneous cosmological model does not have unique self-adjoint extension, albeit for isotropic model, there is a special unique extension associated with quadratic form of Hamiltonian i.e {\it Friedrichs extension}. Details of calculations are carried out for a Bianchi III model.

Equivalence of Einstein and Jordan frames in quantized cosmological models

The present work shows that the mathematical equivalence of Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame, so far as Brans-Dicke theory is concerned, survives a quantization of cosmological models in the theory. We work with the Wheeler-deWitt quantization scheme and take up quite a few anisotropic cosmological models as examples. We effectively show that the transformation from Jordan to Einstein frame is a canonical one and hence two frames are equivalent description of same physical scenario.

Quantized Brans Dicke Theory: Phase Transition and Strong Coupling (Large $ω$) Limit & General Relativity

We show that Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) geometry with flat spatial section in quantized (Wheeler deWitt quantization) Brans Dicke (BD) theory reveals a rich phase structure owing to anomalous breaking of a classical symmetry, which maps the scale factor $a\mapstoλa$ for some constant $λ$. In the weak coupling ($ω$) limit, the theory goes from a symmetry preserving phase to a broken phase. The existence of phase boundary is an obstruction to another classical symmetry [arXiv:gr-qc/9902083] (which relates two BD theory with different coupling) admitted by BD theory with scale invariant matter content i.e $T^μ{}_μ=0$. Classically, this prohibits the BD theory to reduce to General Relativity (GR) for scale invariant matter content. We show that strong coupling limit of BD and GR both preserves the symmetry involving scale factor. We also show that with a scale invariant matter content (radiation i.e $P=\frac{1}{3}ρ$), the quantized BD theory does reduce to GR as $ω\rightarrow\infty$, which is in sharp contrast to classical behavior. This is a first known illustration of a scenario, where quantized BD theory provides example of anomalous symmetry breaking and resulting binary phase structure. We make a conjecture regarding strong coupling limit of BD theory in generic scenario.

Weyl Consistency Conditions in Non-Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

Weyl consistency conditions have been used in unitary relativistic quantum field theory to impose constraints on the renormalization group flow of certain quantities. We classify the Weyl anomalies and their renormalization scheme ambiguities for generic non-relativistic theories in 2+1 dimensions with anisotropic scaling exponent z=2; the extension to other values of z are discussed as well. We give the consistency conditions among these anomalies. As an application we find several candidates for a C-theorem. We comment on possible candidates for a $C$-theorem in higher dimensions.

Zeno-Gravity Correspondence: Zeno's Dichotomy Paradox and Gravitational red-shift near Event Horizon

We relate Zeno's Dichotomy paradox with gravitational red-shift near event horizon in a spherically symmetric space-time. A dictionary of this connection, henceforth called as Zeno-Gravity correspondence, has been built up. The infinite sequence of Zeno's paradox gets mapped to the effect of infinite gravitational red-shift near event horizon and the infinite amount of co-ordinate time the light/particle takes to reach the horizon, starting from a finite distance away from the horizon. Utilizing the dictionary, we elucidate the concept of gravitational red-shift and co-ordinate chart, not covering the whole manifold in a more transparent student-friendly manner without using sophisticated machinery of differential geometry.

Physical Aspects of Unitary evolution of Bianchi-I Quantum Cosmological Model

In this work, we study some physical aspects of unitary evolution of Bianchi-I model. In particular, we study the behavior of the volume and the scale factor as a function of time for the Bianchi-I universe with ultra-relativistic fluid ($α=1$). The expectation value of volume is shown not to hit any singularity. We elucidate on the anisotropic nature of the solution and physically interpret the wavefunction as a superposition of collapsing universe and expanding universe mimicking Hartle-Hawking type wavefunction. The same analysis has been done for $α\neq 1$ as well. The work also comments on how to obtain Vilenkin type wavefunction representing an expanding universe without that being superposed with a solution representing a collapsing universe. We also point at a possible phase transition phenomenon for $α\neq1$ case with existence of a critical parameter.

Restoring unitarity in anisotropic quantum cosmological models

The present work shows that a properly chosen ordering of operators can restore unitarity in anisotropic quantum cosmological models. Bianch V and Bianchi IX models with a perfect fluid are worked out. It has been shown that a transformation of coordinates takes the Hamiltonian to that of an inverse square potential which has equal deficiency indices and a self-adjoint extension is thus possible. It is also shown, although not detected clearly before, that isotropic models are also apt to violate the conservation of probability for a careless operator ordering.

Unitary evolution for a quantum Kantowski-Sachs cosmology

It is shown that like Bianchi I, V and IX models, a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model also allows a unitary evolution on quantization. It has also been shown that this unitarity is not at the expense of the anisotropy. Non-unitarity, if there is any, cannot escape notice in this as the evolution is studied against a properly oriented time parameter fixed by the evolution of the fluid. Furthermore, we have constructed a wave-packet by superposing different energy eigenstates, thereby establishing unitarity in a non-trivial way, which is a stronger result than an energy eigenstate trivially giving time independent probability density. For $α\neq1$, we have proved that the Hamiltonian upon suitable operator ordering admits a self-adjoint extension under reasonable assumption, using a standard theorem. This consolidates the recently shown fact that the problem of non-unitarity cannot be a generic problem of anisotropy.

Addressing the issue of non-unitarity in anisotropic quantum cosmology

In the present work we show that the widely believed pathology of the non-unitarity of anisotropic quantum cosmological models cannot be a generic problem. We exhibit a non trivial example, a Bianchi-I model with an ultrarelativistic fluid, that has a well behaved time independent norm. We also show that a suitable operator ordering should produce time independent norms for the wave packets in the case of other more realistic fluids as well.

Simple Harmonic Motion:Geometrical Solutions of Equations of Motions

Conventionally while we talk about geometry associated with a simple harmonic oscillator, we draw a circle with a radius equal to the amplitude of Oscillator and imagine a particle moving along the perimeter with a frequency same as that of Oscillator and then the x coordinate of the position of the particle gives the value of the displacement of the Oscillator. Here we discuss another kind of diagram (polar plot) depicting dynamics of Oscillator and come up with a solution to boundary and initial value problem geometrically.

Expanding Universe: Thermodynamical Aspects From Different Models

The pivotal point of the paper is to discuss the behavior of temperature, pressure, energy density as a function of volume along with determination of caloric EoS from following two model: $w(z)=w_{0}+w_{1}\ln(1+z)$ & $ w(z)=-1+\frac{(1+z)}{3}\frac{A_{1}+2A_{2}(1+z)}{A_{0}+2A_{1}(1+z)+A_{2}(1+z)^{2}}$. The time scale of instability for this two models is discussed. In the paper we then generalize our result and arrive at general expression for energy density irrespective of the model. The thermodynamical stability for both of the model and the general case is discussed from this viewpoint. We also arrive at a condition on the limiting behavior of thermodynamic parameter to validate the third law of thermodynamics and interpret the general mathematical expression of integration constant $U_{0}$ (what we get while integrating energy conservation equation) physically relating it to number of micro states. The constraint on the allowed values of the parameters of the models is discussed which ascertains stability of universe. The validity of thermodynamical laws within apparent and event horizon is discussed.
