Constraining the curvature density parameter in cosmology

The cosmic curvature density parameter has been constrained in the present work independent of any background cosmological model. The reconstruction is performed adopting the non-parametric Gaussian Processes (GP). The constraints on $Ω_{k0}$ are obtained via a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis. Late-time cosmological probes viz., the Supernova (SN) distance modulus data, the Cosmic Chronometer (CC) and the radial Baryon Acoustic Oscillations ($r$BAO) measurements of the Hubble data have been utilized for this purpose. The results are further combined with the data from redshift space distortions (RSD) which studies the growth of large scale structure in the universe. The only \textit{a priori} assumption is that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic, described by the FLRW metric. Results indicate that a spatially flat universe is well consistent in 2$σ$ within the domain of reconstruction $0<z<2$ for the background data. On combining the RSD data we find that the results obtained are consistent with spatial flatness mostly within 2$σ$ and always within 3$σ$ in the domain of reconstruction $0<z<2$.

Raychaudhuri equation in scalar-tensor theory

Implications of the Raychaudhuri equation in focusing of geodesic congruences are studied in the framework of scalar--tensor theory of gravity. Specifically, we investigate the Brans--Dicke theory and Bekenstein's scalar field theory. In both of these theories, we deal with a static spherically symmetric distribution and a spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model as specific examples. We find that it is possible to violate the convergence condition under reasonable physical assumptions. This leads to the possibility of avoiding a singularity.

Revisiting a non-parametric reconstruction of the deceleration parameter from combined background and the growth rate data

The cosmic deceleration parameter $q$ has been reconstructed in a non-parametric way using various combinations of recent observational datasets. The Pantheon compilation of the Supernova (SN) distance modulus data, the Cosmic Chronometer (CC) measurements of the Hubble parameter including the full systematics and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data have been considered in this work. The redshift $z_t$, where the transition from a past decelerated to a late-time accelerated phase of evolution occurs, is estimated from the reconstructed $q$. The possible effect of a non-zero spatial curvature from the Planck 2020 estimate is checked. The outcome of including different $H_0$ measurements from recent Planck 2020 and Riess 2021 probes having a maximum discrepancy at the $4.2σ$ level, is investigated. Results indicate that the transition from a past decelerated phase to the late-time accelerated phase occurs within the redshift range $0.5<z<1$. For $z>1$, the reconstructed $q$ is observed to have a non-monotonic evolution in case of the combined CC and SN data. On introducing the BAO data, the reconstructed $q$ shows an oscillating behaviour for $z\gtrsim1$. To investigate the effect of matter perturbations, the growth rate data from the Redshift-Space Distortions (RSD) are utilized in reconstructing $q$. Using the $\mathcal{O}m(z)$ diagnostic, we draw inferences on the validity of $Λ$CDM as a consistency check. The $Λ$CDM model is well consistent and included at the 2$σ$ level in the domain of all the reconstructions.

Cosmological quantum entanglement : A possible testbed for the existence of Kalb-Ramond field

In the present paper, we explore the possible effects of a second rank antisymmetric tensor field, known as Kalb-Ramond (KR) field, on cosmological particle production as well as on quantum entanglement for a massive scalar field propagating in a four dimensional FRW spacetime evolves through a symmetric bounce. For this purpose, the scalar field is considered to be coupled with the KR field and also with the Ricci scalar via the term $\sim ξRΦ^2$ (with $ξ$ be the coupling). The presence of KR field spoils the conformal symmetry of a massless scalar field even for $ξ= 1/6$ in four dimensional context, which has interesting consequences on particle production and consequently on quantum entanglement as we will discuss. In particular, the presence of KR field in a FRW bouncing universe allows a greater particle production and consequently the upper bound of the entanglement entropy becomes larger in comparison to the case when the KR field is absent. This may provide an interesting testbed for the existence of Kalb-Ramond field in our universe.

Greybody factor and sparsity of Hawking radiation from a charged spherical black hole with scalar hair

The `no-hair' conjecture claims that for a spherically symmetric black hole, only the information regarding the mass and charge of the black hole is available to an external observer. However, there are numerous counterexamples to the `no-hair' conjecture. In this work, we consider a particular counter-example to the `no-hair' conjecture in (3+1) dimensions, namely, a static spherically symmetric charged black hole with a scalar hair. We provide semi-analytic bounds on the greybody factors and study the sparsity of Hawking radiation of mass-less uncharged scalar fields. Our results show that the scalar and electric charges contribute oppositely to the greybody factor and the sparsity of the Hawking radiation cascade. Also, the greybody factor decreases and the Hawking emission spectra become more sparse with the reduction in the black hole (ADM) mass.

Non-parametric reconstruction of the cosmological \textit{jerk} parameter

The cosmological jerk parameter $j$ is reconstructed in a non-parametric way from observational data independent of a fiducial cosmological model. From this kinematical quantity, the equation of state parameter for composite matter distribution is also found out. The result shows that there is a deviation from the $Λ$CDM model close to $z=1.5$, at the $3σ$ confidence level.

Brans-Dicke Cosmology: Thermodynamic viability

Brans-Dicke cosmological models for a spatially isotropic and homogeneous universe are tested in terms of the validity of the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics (GSL). The investigation is carried out in the Einstein frame. It is found that the models are thermodynamically viable for negative values of the Brans-Dicke parameter w and thus are quite consistent with the recent accelerated expansion of the universe.

A parametric reconstruction of the cosmological jerk from diverse observational data sets

A parametric reconstruction of the jerk parameter, the third order derivative of the scale factor expressed in a dimensionless way, has been discussed. Observational constraints on the model parameters have been obtained by Maximum Likelihood Analysis of the models using Supernova Distance Modulus data (SNe), Observational Hubble Data (OHD), Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data and CMB shift parameter data (CMBShift). The present value of the jerk parameter has been kept open to start with, but the plots of various cosmological parameter like deceleration parameter $q(z)$, jerk parameter $j(z)$, dark energy equation of state parameter $w_{DE}(z)$ indicate that the reconstructed models are very close to a $Λ$CDM model with a slight inclination towards a non-phantom behaviour of the evolution.

A Reconstruction of Quintessence Dark Energy

With a parametric form of the equation of state parameter of dark energy, a quintessence potential has been reconstructed. The potential is found to be a generalization of a double exponential potential. The constraints on the parameters are obtained by maximum likelihood analysis using observational Hubble data, type Ia supernova data, baryon acoustic oscillation data and the CMB shift parameter data. Th emodel shows preference towards the phantom behaviour of dark energy.

Anisotropic models are unitary: A rejuvenation of standard quantum cosmology

The present work proves that the folk-lore of the pathology of non-conservation of probability in quantum anisotropic models is wrong. It is shown in full generality that all operator ordering can lead to a Hamiltonian with a self-adjoint extension as long as it is constructed to be a symmetric operator, thereby making the problem of non-unitarity in context of anisotropic homogeneous model a ghost. Moreover, it is indicated that the self-adjoint extension is not unique and this non-uniqueness is suspected not to be a feature of Anisotropic model only, in the sense that there exists operator orderings such that Hamiltonian for an isotropic homogeneous cosmological model does not have unique self-adjoint extension, albeit for isotropic model, there is a special unique extension associated with quadratic form of Hamiltonian i.e {\it Friedrichs extension}. Details of calculations are carried out for a Bianchi III model.

Dynamical systems study of Chameleon scalar field

The present work is an extensive study of the viable stable solutions of chameleon scalar field models leading to possibilities of an accelerated expansion of the universe. It is found that for various combinations of the chameleon field potential $V(ϕ)$ and the coupling $f(ϕ)$ of the chameleon field with matter, a stable solution for an accelerated expansion is quite possible. The investigation provides a diagnostics for the stability criteria for all sorts of combinations of $V(ϕ)$ and $f(ϕ)$.

Equivalence of Einstein and Jordan frames in quantized cosmological models

The present work shows that the mathematical equivalence of Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame, so far as Brans-Dicke theory is concerned, survives a quantization of cosmological models in the theory. We work with the Wheeler-deWitt quantization scheme and take up quite a few anisotropic cosmological models as examples. We effectively show that the transformation from Jordan to Einstein frame is a canonical one and hence two frames are equivalent description of same physical scenario.

preprint2016arXiv

Equivalence of Jordan and Einstein frames at the quantum level

It is shown that the Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame of nonminimally coupled theories of gravity, are actually equivalent at the quantum level. The example of the theory taken up is the Brans-Dicke theory, and the wave packet calculations are done for a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model in the purest form of the theory, i.e., in the absence of any additional matter sector. The calculations are clean and exact, and the result obtained are unambiguous.

Gravitational collapse in f(R) gravity for a spherically symmetric spacetime admitting a homothetic Killing vector

The gravitational collapse of a spherical distribution, in a class of f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is power function of R, is discussed. The spacetime is assumed to admit a homothetic Killing vector. In the collapsing modes, some of the situations indeed hit a singularity, but they are all covered with an apparent horizon. Some peculiar cases are observed where the collapsing body settles to a constant radius at a given value of the radial coordinate.

Spherically symmetric collapse of a perfect fluid in f(R) gravity

The present work investigates the gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid in $f(R)$ gravity models. For a general $f(R)$ theory, it is shown analytically that a collapse is quite possible. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity of shell focusing type. The possibility of the formation of an apparent horizon hiding the central singularity depends on the initial conditions.

Unitary evolution for anisotropic quantum cosmologies: models with variable spatial curvature

Contrary to the general belief, there has recently been quite a few examples of unitary evolution of quantum cosmological models. The present work gives more examples, namely Bianchi type VI and type II. These examples are important as they involve varying spatial curvature unlike the most talked about homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models like Bianchi I, V and IX. We exhibit either explicit example of the unitary solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, or at least show that a self-adjoint extension is possible.

Restoring unitarity in anisotropic quantum cosmological models

The present work shows that a properly chosen ordering of operators can restore unitarity in anisotropic quantum cosmological models. Bianch V and Bianchi IX models with a perfect fluid are worked out. It has been shown that a transformation of coordinates takes the Hamiltonian to that of an inverse square potential which has equal deficiency indices and a self-adjoint extension is thus possible. It is also shown, although not detected clearly before, that isotropic models are also apt to violate the conservation of probability for a careless operator ordering.

preprint2015arXiv

Unitary evolution for a quantum Kantowski-Sachs cosmology

It is shown that like Bianchi I, V and IX models, a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model also allows a unitary evolution on quantization. It has also been shown that this unitarity is not at the expense of the anisotropy. Non-unitarity, if there is any, cannot escape notice in this as the evolution is studied against a properly oriented time parameter fixed by the evolution of the fluid. Furthermore, we have constructed a wave-packet by superposing different energy eigenstates, thereby establishing unitarity in a non-trivial way, which is a stronger result than an energy eigenstate trivially giving time independent probability density. For $α\neq1$, we have proved that the Hamiltonian upon suitable operator ordering admits a self-adjoint extension under reasonable assumption, using a standard theorem. This consolidates the recently shown fact that the problem of non-unitarity cannot be a generic problem of anisotropy.

preprint2014arXiv

Addressing the issue of non-unitarity in anisotropic quantum cosmology

In the present work we show that the widely believed pathology of the non-unitarity of anisotropic quantum cosmological models cannot be a generic problem. We exhibit a non trivial example, a Bianchi-I model with an ultrarelativistic fluid, that has a well behaved time independent norm. We also show that a suitable operator ordering should produce time independent norms for the wave packets in the case of other more realistic fluids as well.

Towards a characterization of fields leading to black hole hair

In the present work, it is shown that an asymptotically flat spherical black hole can have a nontrivial signature of any field for an exterior observer if the energy momentum tensor of the corresponding field is either tracefree or if the trace falls off at least as rapidly as inverse cube of the radial distance. In the absence of a general No Hair Theorem, this result can provide a characterization of the fields leading to black hole hair.

Perfect Fluid Quantum Anisotropic Universe: Merits and Challenges

The present paper deals with quantization of perfect fluid anisotropic cosmological models. Bianchi type V and IX models are discussed following Schutz's method of expressing fluid velocities in terms of six potentials. The wave functions are found for several examples of equations of state. In one case a complete wave packet could be formed analytically. The initial singularity of a zero proper volume can be avoided in this case, but it is plagued by the usual problem of non-unitarity of anisotropic quantum cosmological models. It is seen that a particular operator ordering alleviates this problem.

Spherically symmetric scalar field collapse

It is shown that a scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity may have collapsing modes even when the energy condition is violated, that is, for $(ρ+3p)<0$. This result may be useful in the investigation of the possible clustering of dark energy. All the examples dealt with have apparent horizons which form before the formation of the singularity. The singularities formed are shell focusing in nature. The density of the scalar field distribution is seen to diverge at singularity. The Ricci scalar also diverges at the singularity. The interior spherically symmetric metric is matched with exterior Vaidya metric at the hypersurface and the appropriate junction conditions are obtained.

Collapse of non-spherically symmetric scalar field distributions

In the present work the collapse scenario of some exact non-spherical models with a minimally coupled scalar field is studied. Scalar field collapse with planar as well as toroidal, cylindrical and pseudoplanar symmetries have been investigated. It is shown that the scalar field may have collapsing modes even if it has the equation of state corresponding to that of a dark energy.

Cosmology and large mass hierarchy in multiply warped braneworld scenario

Hubble expansion in warped braneworld model is addressed in presence of more than one warped extra dimensions. It is shown that while the expansion depends on all the moduli, an exponential nature of the expansion of the scale factor emerges as a generic feature which is independent of the number of extra dimensions. Expression for the effective brane cosmological constant in such model has been derived. It is shown that similar to the 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model a fine tuning between the bulk cosmological constant and brane tension is required to obtain the desired cosmological constant on the brane. The length of the extra dimensions are determined in such scenario. Finally introduing pressureless matter in the bulk an observationally consistent cosmology was obtained on the visible brane.

Can neutrino viscosity drive the late time cosmic acceleration?

In this paper it has been shown that the neutrino bulk viscous stresses can give rise to the late time acceleration of the universe. It is found that a number of spatially flat FRW models with a negative deceleration parameter can be constructed using neutrino viscosity and one of them mimics a $Λ$CDM model. This does not require any exotic dark energy component or any modification of gravity.

Chameleon field and the late time acceleration of the universe

In the present work, it is shown that a chameleon scalar field having a nonminimal coupling with dark matter can give rise to a smooth transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of expansion for the universe. It is surprising to note that the coupling with the chameleon scalar field hardly affects the evolution of the dark matter sector, which still redshifts as $a^{-3}$.

Periodic distribution of galaxies in generalized scalar tensor theory

With the help of Nordtvedt's scalar tensor theory an exact analytical model of a non-minimally coupled scalar field cosmology in which the gravitational coupling $G$ and the Hubble factor $H$ oscillate during the radiation era is presented. A key feature is that the oscillations are confined to the early stages of the radiation dominated era with $G$ approaching its present constant value while $H$ becoming a monotonically decreasing function of time. The Brans Dicke parameter $ω$ is chosen to be a function of Brans Dicke scalar field so that no conflict with observational constraints regarding its present value arises.
