Polarisation fractions in $B\to V_1 V_2$: U-Spin constraints and new physics signatures

We investigate the decays of $B$ mesons, i.e., $B_d$, $B_s$, $B^+$, and their antiparticles, to two light vector mesons ($B \to V_1V_2$), focusing on the implications of SU(2) U-spin symmetry, which relates $ΔS = 0$ and $ΔS = 1$ decay amplitudes through the interchange $d \leftrightarrow s$. Performing a global fit, we find that the Standard Model (SM) yields only a very poor agreement with the data, both in the exact U-spin limit as well as when substantial U-spin breaking is allowed for. The tension is primarily driven by the unexpectedly small longitudinal polarisation fraction in almost all $ΔS = 1$ decays, especially for $B_s \to K^{*0} \overline{K^{*0}}$, for which the individual disagreement with U-spin based expectation is about $3.5σ$. Within the SM framework, the only effective resolution would be to disregard entirely the hierarchy between the longitudinal and transverse helicity amplitudes, in the heavy quark limit, as dictated by naive factorisation. An alternative would be to invoke new physics (NP) in the $b\to s$ sector that does not respect the hierarchy, and hence can reduce the tension for all the $ΔS=1$ modes. We demonstrate that certain colour suppressed NP operators can alleviate the tension significantly without adversely affecting the agreement for the other modes.

'Deep' Dive into $b \to c$ Anomalies: Standardized and Future-proof Model Selection Using Self-normalizing Neural Networks

Noting the erroneous proclivity of information-theoretic approaches, like the Akaike information criterion (AIC), to select simpler models while performing model selection with a small sample size, we address the problem of new physics model selection in $b\to c τν_τ$ decays in this paper by employing a specific machine learning algorithm (self-normalizing neural networks, a.k.a. SNN) for supervised classification and regression, in a model-independent framework. While the outcomes of the classification with real data-set are compared with AIC, with the SNNs outperforming AIC$_c$ in all aspects of model selection, the regression-outcomes are compared with the results from Bayesian analyses; the obtained parameter spaces differ considerably while keeping maximum posterior (MAP) estimates similar. A few of the two-operator scenarios with a tensor-type interaction are found to be the most probable solution for the data. We also test the effectiveness of our trained networks with the expected, more precise data in Belle-II. The trained networks and associated functionalities are supplied for the use of the community.

Exhaustive Model Selection in $b \to s \ell \ell$ Decays: Pitting Cross-Validation against AIC$_c$

In the light of recent data, we study the new physics effects in the exclusive $b \to s \ell^+\ell^-$ decays from a model independent perspective. Different combinations of the dimension six effective operators along with their respective Wilson coefficients are chosen for the analysis. To find out the operator or sets of operators that can best explain the available data in this channel, we simultaneously apply popular model selection tools like cross-validation and the information theoretic approach like Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). There are one, two, and three-operator scenarios which survive the test and a left-handed quark current with vector muon coupling is common among them. This is also the only surviving one-operator scenario. Best-fit values and correlations of the new Wilson coefficients are supplied for all the selected scenarios. We find that the angular observables play the dominant role in the model selection procedure. We also note that while a left-handed quark current with axial-vector muon coupling is the only one-operator scenario able to explain the ratios $R_{K^{(*)}}$ ($R_{K^*}$ for $q^2\in [ 0.045, 1.1] {\rm GeV}^2$ in particular), there are also a couple of two operator scenarios that can simultaneously explain the measured $R_{K^{(*)}}$.

Updates on SM predictions of $|V_{cb}|$ and $R(D^{*})$ in $B\to D^{*}\ellν_\ell$ decays

We update the standard model (SM) predictions of $R(D^*)$ using the latest results on the decay distributions in $B \to D^* \ell ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell = μ, e$) by Belle collaboration, while extracting $|V_{cb}|$ at the same time. Depending on the inputs used in the analysis, we define various fit scenarios. Although the central values of the predicted $R(D^*)$ in all the scenarios have reduced from its earlier predictions in 2017, the results are consistent with each other within the uncertainties. In this analysis, our prediction of $R(D^*)$ is consistent with the respective world average at $\sim 3σ$. We have also predicted several angular observables associated with $B \to D^* τν_τ$ decays. We note that the predicted $F_L(D^*)$ is consistent with the corresponding measurement at 2$σ$. Utilizing these new results, we fit the Wilson coefficients appearing beyond the standard model of particle physics (BSM). To see the trend of SM predictions, we have utilized the recently published preliminary results on the form-factors at non-zero recoil by the lattice groups like Fermilab-MILC and JLQCD and predicted the observables in $B \to D^* \ell ν_{\ell}$, and $B \to D^* τν_τ$ decays.

A detailed study of the $Λ_b \to Λ\ell^+ \ell^-$ decays in the Standard Model

Based on the standard model (SM) of particle physics, we study the decays $Λ_b \to Λ\ell^+ \ell^-$ in light of the available inputs from lattice and the data from LHCb. We fit the form-factors of this decay mode using the available theory and experimental inputs after defining different fit scenarios and checking their consistencies. The theory inputs include the relations between the form-factors in heavy quark effective theory (HQET) and soft collinear effective theory (SCET) at the endpoints of di-lepton invariant mass squared $q^2$. Utilizing the fit results, we have predicted a few observables related to this mode. We have also predicted the observable $R_Λ = Br(Λ_b \to Λ\ell_i^+\ell_i^- )/Br(Λ_b \to Λ\ell_j^+\ell_j^-)$ where $\ell_{i}$ and $\ell_j$ are charged leptons of different generations ($i \ne j$). At the moment, we do not observe noticeable differences in the extracted values of the observables in fully data-driven and SM like fit scenarios.

Correlating new physics signals in $B \to D^{(*)} τν_τ$ with $B \to τν_τ$

Semileptonic and purely leptonic decays of B meson to $τ$, such as $B\to D^{(\ast)}τν_τ$ and $B\toτν_τ$ are studied. Recognizing that there already were some weak hints of possible deviations from the SM in the measurements of $\mathcal{B}(B\toτν_τ)$ by \Babar~and Belle and the fact that detection of the $τ$ also occurs in the measurements of $B\to D^{(\ast)}τν_τ$, we stress the importance of joint studies of these processes, whenever possible. For this purpose, as an illustration, we introduce the observable, $\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)})/\mathcal{B}(B\toτν_τ)$ where, for one thing, the unknown systematics due to $τ$ identification are expected to largely cancel. We show that all measurements of this observable are consistent with the existing data, within somewhat largish experimental errors, with the predictions of the SM. We stress that precise experimental measurement and comparison with theory of the branching ratio for $B \to τν_τ$ is extremely important for a reliable search of new physics. Furthermore, in view of the anticipated improved precision in experiments in the next few years, in addition to $\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)})$, host of other ratios analogous to $\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)})/\mathcal{B}(B \to τν_τ)$ in the SM are suggested for lattice calculations as well, so that for more stringent tests of the SM, correlations in lattice calculations can be properly taken into account to enhance precision.

Optimal-observable analysis of possible new physics in $B\to D^{(\ast)}τν_τ$

We study all possible observables in $B\to D^{(\ast)}τν_τ$ with new physics (NP), including new vector, scalar and tensor interactions, and investigate the prospects of extracting NP Wilson coefficients with optimal observables. Analysis of the full $q^2$ integrated branching fractions of $B\to D^{(\ast)}τν_τ$ show that the overall sensitivity of the observables of $B\to D τν_τ$ is more towards the scalar current, whereas the bin-by-bin analysis of $q^2$ distribution of the differential branching fraction points to regions of $q^2$ sensitive to tensor interactions. Interestingly, the observables in $B\to D^{\ast}τν_τ$ are more sensitive to tensor interactions, and bin-by-bin analysis of this mode shows the distinct regions of $q^2$ sensitive to vector or scalar interactions. In addition to that, the $τ$ polarisation asymmetry is found to be more sensitive to NP compared to the other observables, in both decay modes.

Precision determination of the CKM element Vcb

We extract the magnitude of the CKM matrix element Vcb and the most relevant parameters of the Heavy Quark Expansion from data of inclusive semileptonic B decays. Our calculation includes the recently computed O(alphas Lambda^2/mb^2) corrections and a careful estimate of the residual theoretical uncertainty. Using a recent determination of the charm quark mass, we obtain |Vcb| = (42.21+-0.78)x10-3 and mb_kin(1GeV)=(4.553+-0.020)GeV.

$B_s\to D_s K$ as a Probe of CPT Violation

We discuss some possible signals of CPT violation in the $B_s$ system that may be probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show how one can construct combinations ofobservables coming from tagged and untagged decay rates of $B_s\to D_s^\pm K^\mp$ that can unambiguously differentiate between CPT violating and CPT conserving new physics (NP) models contributing in $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing. We choose this particular mode as an illustrative example for two reasons: (i) In the Standard Model, there is only one decay amplitude, so it is easier to untangle any new physics; (ii) $B_s$ being a neutral meson, it is possible to unambiguously identify any sign of CPT violation that occurs only in mixing but not in decay. We define an observable which is useful to extract the CPT violating parameter in $B_s$ decay, and also discuss how far the results are applicable even if CPT violation is present in both mixing and decay.

Probing CPT Violation in B Systems

We discuss how a possible violation of the combined symmetry CPT in the B meson system can be investigated at the LHC. We show how a tagged and an untagged analysis of the decay modes of both B(d) and B(s) mesons can lead not only to a possible detection of a CPT-violating new physics but also to an understanding of its precise nature. The implication of CPT violation to a large mixing phase in the B(s) system is also discussed.

$B_s (\bar B_s)$ -> $D^0_{CP} K {\bar K}$: Detecting and Discriminating New Physics in $B_s$-$\bar B_s$ Mixing

If the weak phase of B_s-anti B_s mixing (2 beta_s) is found to be significantly different from zero, this is a clear signal of new physics (NP). However, if such a signal is found, we would like an unambiguous determination of 2 beta_s in order to ascertain which NP models could be responsible. In addition, in the presence of NP, the width difference ΔΓ_s between the two B_s mass eigenstates can be positive or negative, and ideally this sign ambiguity should be resolved experimentally. Finally, in order to see if the NP is contributing to Γ^s_{12} in addition to M^s_{12}, the precise measurement of |Γ^s_{12}| is crucial. In this paper, we consider several different methods of measuring B_s-anti B_s mixing using two- and three-body decays with ${\bar b} \to {\bar c} u {\bar s}$ and ${\bar b} \to {\bar u} c {\bar s}$ transitions. We find that the most promising of these is a time-dependent Dalitz-plot analysis of $B_s (\bar B_s) \to D^0_{CP} K {\bar K}$. With these decays, all of the above issues can be addressed, and the measurement of the weak phase gamma is also possible. We also note that, with all three-body decays it is possible to resolve the sign ambiguity of ΔΓ_s even without determining the CP phase phi_s.

Repercussions of Flavour Symmetry Breaking on CP Violation in D-Meson Decays

We investigate to what extent the recently measured value for a non-vanishing direct CP asymmetry in D0 -> K+ K- and D0 -> pi+ pi- decays can be accommodated in the Standard Model (SM) or extensions with a constrained flavour sector, for instance from a sequential 4th generation of quarks (4G). From the comparison with D0 -> K- pi+ branching ratios, we establish large U-spin symmetry (d <-> s) breaking effects with large strong phases between different interfering amplitudes. On the basis of conservative estimates on amplitude ratios - which are supported by an analysis of the breaking of a (c <-> u) symmetry in non-leptonic B0 decays - we find that, in the SM, direct CP asymmetries in the pi+ pi- or K+ K- modes (or in their difference) of the order of several per mille are still plausible. Due to the constraints on the new CP phases in the 4G model, only moderate effects compared to the SM estimates are possible. We suggest CP studies at LHCb as well as at (Super)B-factories of several distinctive modes, such as D+ -> Kbar(*)0 pi+, phi pi+ and Ds -> K(*)0 pi+, phi pi+ (K+) etc., which should shed more light on the short- and long-distance issues underlying CP violation in non-leptonic D-meson decays.

Resolving the sign ambiguity in Delta Gamma_s with B_s -> D_s K

The analysis of tagged B_s -> J/psi phi decays determines the CP phase phi_s in B_s-anti-B_s mixing with a two-fold ambiguity. The solutions differ in the sign of cos(phi_s) which equals the sign of the width difference Delta Gamma_s among the two B_s mass eigenstates. We point out that this ambiguity can be removed with the help of B_s -> D_s K decays. We compare untagged and tagged strategies and find the tagged analysis more promising. The removal of the sign ambiguity in Delta Gamma_s can be done with relatively low statistics and could therefore be a target for the early stage of B_s -> D_s K studies.

Two Higgs doublets, a 4th generation and a 125 GeV Higgs: a review

We review the possible role that multi-Higgs models may play in our understanding of the dynamics of a heavy 4th sequential generation of fermions. We describe the underlying ingredients of such models, focusing on two Higgs doublets, and discuss how they may effectively accommodate the low energy phenomenology of such new heavy fermionic degrees of freedom. We also discuss the constraints on these models from precision electroweak data as well as from flavor physics and the implications for collider searches of the Higgs particles and of the 4th generation fermions, bearing in mind the recent observation of a light Higgs with a mass of ~125 GeV.

Muon g-2 and lepton flavor violation in a two Higgs doublets model for the fourth generation

In the minimal Standard Model (SM) with four generations (the so called SM4) and in "standard" two Higgs doublets model (2HDM) setups, e.g., the type II 2HDM with four fermion generations, the contribution of the 4th family heavy leptons to the muon magnetic moment is suppressed and cannot accommodate the measured $ \sim 3 σ$ access with respect to the SM prediction. We show that in a 2HDM for the 4th generation (the 4G2HDM), which we view as a low energy effective theory for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, with one of the Higgs doublets coupling only to the 4th family leptons and quarks (thus effectively addressing their large masses), the loop exchanges of the heavy 4th generation neutrino can account for the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We also discuss the sensitivity of the lepton flavor violating decays $μ\to e γ$ and $τ\to μγ$ and of the decay $B_s \to μμ$ to the new couplings which control the muon g-2 in our model.

Two Higgs doublets with 4th generation fermions - models for TeV-scale compositeness

We construct a class of two Higgs doublets models with a 4th sequential generation of fermions that may effectively accommodate the low energy characteristics and phenomenology of a dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking scenario which is triggered by the condensates of the 4th family fermions. In particular, we single out the heavy quarks by coupling the "heavier" Higgs doublet (Φ_h) which possesses a much larger VEV only to them while the "lighter" doublet (Φ_l) couples only to the light fermions. We study the constraints on these models from precision electroweak data as well as from flavor data. We also discuss some distinct new features that have direct consequences on the production and decays of the 4th family quarks and leptons in high energy colliders; in particular the conventional search strategies for t' and b' may need to be significantly revised.

Constraining the mixing matrix for Standard Model with four generations: time dependent and semi-leptonic CP asymmetries in $B_d^0$, $B_s$ and $D^0$

Using existing experimental information from K, B and D decays as well as electroweak precision tests and oblique parameters, we provide constraints and correlations on the parameters of the 4X4 mixing matrix for the Standard Model with four generations (SM4). We emphasize that some correlations amongst the parameters have important repercussions for key observables. We work with a particular representation of this matrix which is highly suited for extracting information from B-decays. Implications of the resulting constraints for time dependent and semileptonic CP asymmetries for $D^0$, $B^0$ and for $B_s$ are also given. While we show that the semi-leptonic asymmetries may be significantly enhanced in SM4 over the SM, there are important constraints and correlations with other observables. In this context we suggest that existing data from B-factories taken on $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$, and in the relevant continuum be used to constrain the semi-leptonic asymmetries for $B_d$, $B_s$ as well as their linear combination. Of course, the data from the Tevatron and LHCb experiments can provide non-trivial tests of SM4 as well.

Correlated enhancements in $D_s \to \ellν$, $(g-2)$ of muon, and lepton flavor violating $τ$ decays with two R-parity violating couplings

With just two R-parity violating couplings, $λ'_{223}$ and $λ'_{323}$, we correlate several channels, namely, $D_s \to \ell ν$ ($\ell = μ, τ$), $(g-2)_μ$, and some lepton flavor violating $τ$ decays. For $λ'_{223} = λ'_{323} \sim 0.3$ and for a common superpartner mass of 300 GeV, which explain the recently observed excesses in the above $D_s$ decay channels, we predict the following R-parity violating contributions: ${\rm Br} (τ\to μγ) \sim 4.5 \cdot 10^{-8}$, ${\rm Br} (τ\to μμμ) \sim 1.2 \cdot 10^{-8}$, ${\rm Br} (τ\to μη/η') \sim 4 \cdot 10^{-10}$, and $(g_μ-2)/2 \sim 4 \cdot 10^{-11}$. We exhibit our results through observable versus observable correlation plots.

Enhanced $B_s$--$\bar{B}_s$ lifetime difference and anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry from new physics in $B_s \to τ^+ τ^-$

New physics models that increase the decay rate of $B_s \to τ^+ τ^-$ contribute to the absorptive part of $B_s$--$\bar{B}_s$ mixing, and may enhance $ΔΓ_s$ all the way up to its current experimental bound. In particular, the model with a scalar leptoquark can lead to a significant violation of the expectation $ΔΓ_s \leq ΔΓ_s$ (SM). It can even allow regions in the $ΔΓ_s$-$β_s$ parameter space that are close to the best fit obtained by CDF and D\{O} through $B_s \to J/ψϕ$. In addition, it can help explain the anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry observed recently by DØ. A measurement of $BR(B_s \to τ^+ τ^-)$ is thus crucial for a better understanding of new physics involved in $B_s$--$\bar{B}_s$ mixing.

SM with four generations: Selected implications for rare B and K decays

We extend our recent work and study implications of the Standard Model with four generations (SM4) for rare B and K decays. We again take seriously the several 2-3 $σ$ anomalies seen in B, $B_s$ decays and interpret them in the context of this simple extension of the SM. SM4 is also of course of considerable interest for its potential relevance to dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and to baryogenesis. Using experimental information from processes such as $B \to X_s γ$, $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixings, indirect CP-violation from $K_L \to ππ$ etc along with oblique corrections, we constrain the relevant parameter space of the SM4, and find $m_{t'}$ of about 400-600 GeV with a mixing angle $| V_{t'b}^*V_{t's}|$ in the range of about (0.05 to 1.4)$\times 10^{-2}$ and with an appreciable CP-odd associated phase, are favored by the current data. Given the unique role of the CP asymmetry in $B_s \to ψϕ$ due to its gold-plated nature, correlation of that with many other interesting observables, including the semileptonic asymmetry ($A_{SL}$) are studied in SM4. We also identify several processes, such as $B \to X_s ν\barν$, $K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν$ etc, that are significantly different in SM4 from the SM. Experimentally the very distinctive process $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ is also discussed; the branching ratio can be larger or smaller than in SM, $(3.2 \to 4.2)\times 10^{-9}$, by a factor of ${\cal{O}}(3)$.

The fourth family: a simple explanation for the observed pattern of anomalies in B-CP asymmetries

We show that a fourth family of quarks with $m_{t'}$ in the range of (400 - 600) GeV provides a rather simple explanation for the several indications of new physics that have been observed involving CP asymmetries of the b-quark. The built-in hierarchy of the 4$\times$4 mixing matrix is such that the $t'$ readily provides a needed {\it perturbation} ($\approx 15%$) to $\sin 2 β$ as measured in $B \to ψK_s$ and simultaneously is the dominant source of CP asymmetry in $B_s \to ψϕ$. The correlation between CP asymmetries in $B_s \toψϕ$ and $B_d\toϕK_s$ suggests $m_{t'} \approx$ (400 - 600) GeV. Such heavy masses point to the tantalizing possibility that the 4th family plays an important role in the electroweak symmetry breaking.
