Spectrum of quantum KdV hierarchy in the semiclassical limit

We employ semiclassical quantization to calculate spectrum of quantum KdV charges in the limit of large central charge $c$. Classically, KdV charges $Q_{2n-1}$ generate completely integrable dynamics on the co-adjoint orbit of the Virasoro algebra. They can be expressed in terms of action variables $I_k$, e.g.~as a power series expansion. Quantum-mechanically this series becomes the expansion in $1/c$, while action variables become integer-valued quantum numbers $n_i$. Crucially, classical expression, which is homogeneous in $I_k$, acquires quantum corrections that include terms of subleading powers in $n_k$. At first two non-trivial orders in $1/c$ expansion these ``quantum'' terms can be fixed from the analytic form of $Q_{2n-1}$ acting on the primary states. In this way we find explicit expression for the spectrum of $Q_{2n-1}$ up to first three orders in $1/c$ expansion. We apply this result to study thermal expectation values of $Q_{2n-1}$ and free energy of the KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.

Target Space Entanglement in Quantum Mechanics of Fermions and Matrices

Quantum entanglement is closely related to the structure of spacetime in quantum gravity. For quantum field theories or statistical models, we usually consider base space entanglement. However, target space instead of base space sometimes directly connects to our spacetime. In these cases, it is natural to consider a concept of target space entanglement. To define the target space entanglement, we consider a generalized definition of entanglement entropy based on an algebraic approach. This approach is reviewed and is applied to the first quantized particles, in particular, fermions. This article is based on the paper JHEP 08 (2021) 046 [arXiv:2105.13726].

IR finite S-matrix by gauge invariant dressed states

Dressed states were proposed to define the infrared (IR) finite $S$-matrix in QED or gravity. We show that the original Kulish-Faddeev dressed states are not enough to cure the IR divergences. To illustrate this problem, we consider QED with background currents (Wilson lines). This theory is exactly solvable but shares the same IR problems as the full QED. We show that naive asymptotic states lead to IR divergences in the $S$-matrix and are also inconsistent with the asymptotic symmetry, even if we add the original Kulish-Faddeev dressing operators. We then propose new dressed states which are consistent with the asymptotic symmetry. We show that the $S$-matrix for the dressed states is IR finite. We finally conclude that appropriate dressed asymptotic states define the IR finite $S$-matrix in the full QED.

KdV-charged black holes

We construct black hole geometries in AdS$_3$ with non-trivial values of KdV charges. The black holes are holographically dual to quantum KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in 2d CFT. They satisfy thermodynamic identity and thus are saddle point configurations of the Euclidean gravity path integral. We discuss holographic calculation of the KdV generalized partition function and show that for a certain value of chemical potentials new geometries, not the conventional BTZ ones, are the leading saddles.

Deep Learning and Holographic QCD

We apply the relation between deep learning (DL) and the AdS/CFT correspondence to a holographic model of QCD. Using a lattice QCD data of the chiral condensate at a finite temperature as our training data, the deep learning procedure holographically determines an emergent bulk metric as neural network weights. The emergent bulk metric is found to have both a black hole horizon and a finite-height IR wall, so shares both the confining and deconfining phases, signaling the cross-over thermal phase transition of QCD. In fact, a quark antiquark potential holographically calculated by the emergent bulk metric turns out to possess both the linear confining part and the Debye screening part, as is often observed in lattice QCD. From this we argue the discrepancy between the chiral symmetry breaking and the quark confinement in the holographic QCD. The DL method is shown to provide a novel data-driven holographic modeling of QCD, and sheds light on the mechanism of emergence of the bulk geometries in the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Matter fields in triangle-hinge models

The worldvolume theory of membrane is mathematically equivalent to three-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to matter fields corresponding to the target space coordinates of embedded membrane. In a recent paper [arXiv:1503.08812] a new class of models are introduced that generate three-dimensional random volumes, where the Boltzmann weight of each configuration is given by the product of values assigned to the triangles and the hinges. These triangle-hinge models describe three-dimensional pure gravity and are characterized by semisimple associative algebras. In this paper, we introduce matter degrees of freedom to the models by coloring simplices in a way that they have local interactions. This is achieved simply by extending the associative algebras of the original triangle-hinge models, and the profile of matter field is specified by the set of colors and the form of interactions. The dynamics of a membrane in $D$-dimensional spacetime can then be described by taking the set of colors to be $\mathbb{R}^D$. By taking another set of colors, we can also realize three-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to the Ising model, the $q$-state Potts models or the RSOS models. One can actually assign colors to simplices of any dimensions (tetrahedra, triangles, edges and vertices), and three-dimensional colored tensor models can be realized as triangle-hinge models by coloring tetrahedra, triangles and edges at a time.

Triangle-hinge models for unoriented membranes

Triangle-hinge models [arXiv:1503.08812] are introduced to describe worldvolume dynamics of membranes. The Feynman diagrams consist of triangles glued together along hinges and can be restricted to tetrahedral decompositions in a large N limit. In this paper, after clarifying that all the tetrahedra resulting in the original models are orientable, we define a version of triangle-hinge models that can describe the dynamics of unoriented membranes. By regarding each triangle as representing a propagation of an open membrane of disk topology, we introduce a local worldvolume parity transformation which inverts the orientation of triangle, and define unoriented triangle-hinge models by gauging the transformation. Unlike two-dimensional cases, this local transformation generally relates a manifold to a nonmanifold, but still is a well-defined manipulation among tetrahedral decompositions. We further show that matter fields can be introduced in the same way as in the original oriented models. In particular, the models will describe unoriented membranes in a target spacetime by taking matter fields to be the target space coordinates.

Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes

Applying supersymmetric localization for superstring worldsheet theory with N=(1,1) supersymmetries on a cylinder and with arbitrary boundary interactions, we find the most general formula for the Ramond-Ramond (RR) coupling of D-branes. We allow all massive excitations of open superstrings, and find that only a finite number of them can contribute to the formula. The formula is written by Quillen's superconnection which includes higher form gauge fields, and the resultant general Chern-Simons terms are consistent with RR charge quantization. Applying the formula to boundary string field theory of a BPS D9-brane or a D9-antiD9 brane system, we find that any D9-brane creation via massive mode condensation is impossible.

Random volumes from matrices

We propose a class of models which generate three-dimensional random volumes, where each configuration consists of triangles glued together along multiple hinges. The models have matrices as the dynamical variables and are characterized by semisimple associative algebras A. Although most of the diagrams represent configurations which are not manifolds, we show that the set of possible diagrams can be drastically reduced such that only (and all of the) three-dimensional manifolds with tetrahedral decompositions appear, by introducing a color structure and taking an appropriate large N limit. We examine the analytic properties when A is a matrix ring or a group ring, and show that the models with matrix ring have a novel strong-weak duality which interchanges the roles of triangles and hinges. We also give a brief comment on the relationship of our models with the colored tensor models.

Holographic Holes in Higher Dimensions

We extend the holographic construction from AdS3 to higher dimensions. In particular, we show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of codimension-two surfaces in the bulk with planar symmetry can be evaluated in terms of the 'differential entropy' in the boundary theory. The differential entropy is a certain quantity constructed from the entanglement entropies associated with a family of regions covering a Cauchy surface in the boundary geometry. We demonstrate that a similar construction based on causal holographic information fails in higher dimensions, as it typically yields divergent results. We also show that our construction extends to holographic backgrounds other than AdS spacetime and can accommodate Lovelock theories of higher curvature gravity.

Master equation for the Unruh-DeWitt detector and the universal relaxation time in de Sitter space

We derive the master equation that completely determines the time evolution of the density matrix of the Unruh-DeWitt detector in an arbitrary background geometry. We apply the equation to reveal a nonequilibrium thermodynamic character of de Sitter space. This generalizes an earlier study on the thermodynamic property of the Bunch-Davies vacuum that an Unruh-DeWitt detector staying in the Poincare patch and interacting with a scalar field in the Bunch-Davies vacuum behaves as if it is in a thermal bath of finite temperature. In this paper, instead of the Bunch-Davies vacuum, we consider a class of initial states of scalar field, for which the detector behaves as if it is in a medium that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium and that undergoes a relaxation to the equilibrium corresponding to the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We give a prescription for calculating the relaxation times of the nonequilibrium processes. We particularly show that, when the initial state of the scalar field is the instantaneous ground state at a finite past, the relaxation time is always given by a universal value of half the curvature radius of de Sitter space. We expect that the relaxation time gives a nonequilibrium thermodynamic quantity intrinsic to de Sitter space.

Propagators in de Sitter space

In a spacetime with no global timelike Killing vector, we do not have a natural choice for the vacuum state of matter fields, leading to an ambiguity in defining the Feynman propagators. In this paper, taking the vacuum state to be the instantaneous ground state of the Hamiltonian at each moment, we develop a method for calculating wave functions associated with the vacuum and the corresponding in-in and in-out propagators. We apply this method to free scalar field theory in de Sitter space and obtain de Sitter invariant propagators in various coordinate patches. We show that the in-out propagator in the Poincare patch has a finite massless limit in a de Sitter invariant form. We argue and numerically check that our in-out propagators agree with those obtained by a path integral with the standard iεprescription, and identify the condition on a foliation of spacetime under which such coincidence can happen for the foliation. We also show that the in-out propagators satisfy Polyakov's composition law. Several applications of our framework are also discussed.
