A model of persistent breaking of continuous symmetry

We consider a UV-complete field-theoretic model in general dimensions, including $d=2+1$, that exhibits spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetry, persisting to arbitrarily large temperatures. Our model consists of two copies of the long-range vector models, with $O(m)$ and $O(N-m)$ global symmetry groups, perturbed by double-trace operators. Using conformal perturbation theory we find weakly-coupled IR fixed points for $N\geq 6$ that reveal a spontaneous breaking of global symmetry. Namely, at finite temperature the lower rank group is broken, with the pattern persisting at all temperatures due to scale-invariance. We provide evidence that the models in question are unitary and invariant under full conformal symmetry. Our work generalizes recent results, which considered the particular case of $m=1$ and reported persistent breaking of the discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2=O(1)$. Furthermore, we show that this model exhibits a continuous family of weakly interacting field theories at finite $N$.

Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and its deviations from random-matrix theory beyond the thermalization time

The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) explains emergence of the thermodynamic equilibrium by assuming a particular structure of observable's matrix elements in the energy eigenbasis. Schematically, it postulates that off-diagonal matrix elements are random numbers and the observables can be described by Random Matrix Theory (RMT). To what extent physical operators can be described by RMT, more precisely at which energy scale strict RMT description applies, is however not fully understood. We study this issue by introducing a novel numerical approach to probe correlations between matrix elements for Hilbert-space dimensions beyond those accessible for exact diagonalization. Our analysis is based on the evaluation of higher moments of operator submatrices, defined within energy windows of varying width. Considering nonintegrable quantum spin chains, we observe that genuine RMT behavior is absent even for narrow energy windows corresponding to time scales of the order of thermalization time $τ_\text{th}$ of the respective observables. We also demonstrate that residual correlations between matrix elements are reflected in the dynamics of out-of-time-ordered correlation functions.

Spectrum of quantum KdV hierarchy in the semiclassical limit

We employ semiclassical quantization to calculate spectrum of quantum KdV charges in the limit of large central charge $c$. Classically, KdV charges $Q_{2n-1}$ generate completely integrable dynamics on the co-adjoint orbit of the Virasoro algebra. They can be expressed in terms of action variables $I_k$, e.g.~as a power series expansion. Quantum-mechanically this series becomes the expansion in $1/c$, while action variables become integer-valued quantum numbers $n_i$. Crucially, classical expression, which is homogeneous in $I_k$, acquires quantum corrections that include terms of subleading powers in $n_k$. At first two non-trivial orders in $1/c$ expansion these ``quantum'' terms can be fixed from the analytic form of $Q_{2n-1}$ acting on the primary states. In this way we find explicit expression for the spectrum of $Q_{2n-1}$ up to first three orders in $1/c$ expansion. We apply this result to study thermal expectation values of $Q_{2n-1}$ and free energy of the KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.

A model of persistent breaking of discrete symmetry

We show there exist UV-complete field-theoretic models in general dimension, including $2+1$, with the spontaneous breaking of a global symmetry, which persists to the arbitrarily high temperatures. Our example is a conformal vector model with the $O(N)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry at zero temperature. Using conformal perturbation theory we establish $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is broken at finite temperature for $N>10$. Similar to recent constructions, in the infinite $N$ limit our model has a non-trivial conformal manifold, a moduli space of vacua, which gets deformed at finite temperature. Furthermore, in this regime the model admits a persistent breaking of $O(N)$ in $2+1$ dimensions, therefore providing another example where the Coleman-Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem can be bypassed.

Voltage Feasibility Boundaries for Power System Security Assessment

Modern power systems face a grand challenge in grid management due to increased electricity demand, imminent disturbances, and uncertainties associated with renewable generation, which can compromise grid security. The security assessment is directly connected to the robustness of the operating condition and is evaluated by analyzing proximity to the power flow solution space's boundary. Calculating location of such a boundary is a computationally challenging task, linked to the power flow equations' non-linear nature, presence of technological constraints, and complicated network topology. In this paper we introduce a general framework to characterize points on the power flow solution space boundary in terms of auxiliary variables subject to algebraic constraints. Then we develop an adaptive continuation algorithm to trace 1-dimensional sections of boundary curves which exhibits robust performance and computational tractability. Implementation of the algorithm is described in detail, and its performance is validated on different test networks.

Adiabatic landscape and optimal paths in ergodic systems

Whether one is interested in quantum state preparation or in the design of efficient heat engines, adiabatic (reversible) transformations play a pivotal role in minimizing computational complexity and energy losses. Understanding the structure of these transformations and identifying the systems for which such transformations can be performed efficiently and quickly is therefore of primary importance. In this paper we focus on finding optimal paths in the space of couplings controlling the system's Hamiltonian. More specifically, starting from a local Hamiltonian we analyze directions in the space of couplings along which adiabatic transformations can be accurately generated by local operators, which are both realizable in experiments and easy to simulate numerically. We consider a non-integrable 1D Ising model parametrized by two independent couplings, corresponding to longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields. We find regions in the space of couplings characterized by a very strong anisotropy of the variational adiabatic gauge potential (AGP), generating the adiabatic transformations, which allows us to define optimal adiabatic paths. We find that these paths generally terminate at singular points characterized by extensive degeneracies in the energy spectrum, splitting the parameter space into adiabatically disconnected regions. The anisotropy follows from singularities in the AGP, and we identify special robust weakly-thermalizing and non-absorbing many-body "dark" states which are annihilated by the singular part of the AGP and show that their existence extends deep into the ergodic regime.

KdV-charged black holes

We construct black hole geometries in AdS$_3$ with non-trivial values of KdV charges. The black holes are holographically dual to quantum KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in 2d CFT. They satisfy thermodynamic identity and thus are saddle point configurations of the Euclidean gravity path integral. We discuss holographic calculation of the KdV generalized partition function and show that for a certain value of chemical potentials new geometries, not the conventional BTZ ones, are the leading saddles.

Zero modes of local operators in 2d CFT on a cylinder

Studies of Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in two-dimensional CFTs call for calculation of the expectation values of local operators in highly excited energy eigenstates. This can be done efficiently by representing zero modes of these operators in terms of the Virasoro algebra generators. In this paper we present a pedagogical introduction explaining how this calculation can be performed analytically or using computer algebra. We illustrate the computation of zero modes by a number of examples and list explicit expressions for all local operators from the vacuum family with the dimension of less or equal than eight. Finally, we derive an explicit expression for the quantum KdV generator $Q_7$ in terms of the Virasoro algebra generators. The obtained results can be used for quantitative studies of ETH at finite value of central charge.

Convexity of Solvability Set of Power Distribution Networks

The solvability set of a power network - the set of all power injection vectors for which the corresponding Power Flow equations admit a solution - is central to power systems stability and security, as well as to the tightness of Optimal Power Flow relaxations. Whenever the solvability set is convex, this allows for substantial simplifications of various optimization and risk assessment algorithms. In this paper we focus on the solvability set of power distribution networks and prove convexity of the full solvability set (real and reactive powers) for tree homogeneous networks with the same r/x ratio for all elements. We also show this result can not be improved: once the network is not homogeneous, the convexity is immediately lost. It is nevertheless the case that if the network is almost homogeneous, a substantial practically-important part of the solvability set is still convex. Finally, we prove convexity of real solvability set (only real powers) for any tree network as well as for purely resistive networks with arbitrary topology.

Exact generalized partition function of 2D CFTs at large central charge

We discuss generalized partition function of 2d CFTs decorated by higher qKdV charges on thermal cylinder. We propose that in the large central charge limit qKdV charges factorize such that generalized partition function can be rewritten in terms of auxiliary non-interacting bosons. The explicit expression for the generalized free energy is readily available in terms of the boson spectrum, which can be deduced from the conventional thermal expectation values of qKdV charges. In other words, the picture of the auxiliary non-interacting bosons allows extending thermal one-point functions to the full non-perturbative generalized partition function. We verify this conjecture for the first seven qKdV charges using recently obtained pertrubative results and find corresponding contributions to the auxiliary boson masses. We further extend these results by conjecturing the full spectrum of bosons and find an exact expression for the generalized partition function as a function of infinite tower of chemical potentials in the limit of large central charge.

Generalized Gibbs Ensemble of 2d CFTs at large central charge in the thermodynamic limit

We discuss partition function of 2d CFTs decorated by higher qKdV charges in the thermodynamic limit when the size of the spatial circle goes to infinity. In this limit the saddle point approximation is exact and at infinite central charge generalized partition function can be calculated explicitly. We show that leading 1/c corrections to free energy can be reformulated as a sum over Young tableaux which we calculate for the first two qKdV charges. Next, we compare generalized ensemble with the "eigenstate ensemble" that consists of a single primary state. At infinite central charge the ensembles match at the level of expectation values of local operators for any values of qKdV fugacities. When the central charge is large but finite, for any values of the fugacities the aforementioned ensembles are distinguishable.

Universality of fast quenches from the conformal perturbation theory

We consider global quantum quenches, a protocol when a continuous field theoretic system in the ground state is driven by a homogeneous time-dependent external interaction. When the typical inverse time scale of the interaction is much larger than all relevant scales except for the UV-cutoff the system's response exhibits universal scaling behavior. We provide both qualitative and quantitative explanations of this universality and argue that physics of the response during and shortly after the quench is governed by the conformal perturbation theory around the UV fixed point. We proceed to calculate the response of one and two-point correlation functions confirming and generalizing universal scalings found previously. Finally, we discuss late time behavior after the quench and argue that all local quantities will equilibrate to their thermal values specified by an excess energy acquired by the system during the quench.

Charting the space of 3D CFTs with a continuous global symmetry

We study correlation functions of a conserved spin-1 current $J_μ$ in three dimensional Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). We investigate the constraints imposed by permutation symmetry and current conservation on the form of three point functions $\langle J_μJ_ν\mathcal O_{Δ,\ell}\rangle $ and the four point function $\langle J_μJ_νJ_ρJ_σ\rangle $ and identify the minimal set of independent crossing symmetry conditions. We obtain a recurrence relation for conformal blocks for generic spin-1 operators in three dimensions. In the process, we improve several technical points, facilitating the use of recurrence relations. By applying the machinery of the numerical conformal bootstrap we obtain universal bounds on the dimensions of certain light operators as well as the central charge. Highlights of our results include numerical evidence for the conformal collider bound and new constraints on the parameters of the critical $O(2)$ model. The results obtained in this work apply to any unitary, parity-preserving three dimensional CFT.

Scale-invariant breaking of conformal symmetry

Known examples of unitary relativistic scale but not conformal-invariant field theories (SFTs) can be embedded into conventional conformal field theories (CFTs). We show that any SFT which is a subsector of a unitary CFT is a free theory. Our discussion applies to an arbitrary number of spacetime dimensions and explains triviality of known SFTs in four spacetime dimensions. We comment on examples of unitary SFTs which are not captured by our construction.

Scale Invariance, Conformality, and Generalized Free Fields

This paper addresses the question of whether there are 4D Lorentz invariant unitary quantum field theories with scale invariance but not conformal invariance. An important loophole in the arguments of Luty-Polchinski-Rattazzi and Dymarsky-Komargodski-Schwimmer-Theisen is that trace of the energy-momentum tensor $T$ could be a generalized free field. In this paper we rule out this possibility. The key ingredient is the observation that a unitary theory with scale but not conformal invariance necessarily has a non-vanishing anomaly for global scale transformations. We show that this anomaly cannot be reproduced if $T$ is a generalized free field unless the theory also contains a dimension-2 scalar operator. In the special case where such an operator is present it can be used to redefine ("improve") the energy-momentum tensor, and we show that there is at least one energy-momentum tensor that is not a generalized free field. In addition, we emphasize that, in general, large momentum limits of correlation functions cannot be understood from the leading terms of the coordinate space OPE. This invalidates a recent argument by Farnsworth-Luty-Prilepina (FLP). Despite the invalidity of the general argument of FLP, some of the techniques turn out to be useful in the present context.

(Small) Resonant non-Gaussianities: Signatures of a Discrete Shift Symmetry in the Effective Field Theory of Inflation

We apply the Effective Field Theory of Inflation to study the case where the continuous shift symmetry of the Goldstone boson πis softly broken to a discrete subgroup. This case includes and generalizes recently proposed String Theory inspired models of Inflation based on Axion Monodromy. The models we study have the property that the 2-point function oscillates as a function of the wavenumber, leading to oscillations in the CMB power spectrum. The non-linear realization of time diffeomorphisms induces some self-interactions for the Goldstone boson that lead to a peculiar non-Gaussianity whose shape oscillates as a function of the wavenumber. We find that in the regime of validity of the effective theory, the oscillatory signal contained in the n-point correlation functions, with n>2, is smaller than the one contained in the 2-point function, implying that the signature of oscillations, if ever detected, will be easier to find first in the 2-point function, and only then in the higher order correlation functions. Still the signal contained in higher-order correlation functions, that we study here in generality, could be detected at a subleading level, providing a very compelling consistency check for an approximate discrete shift symmetry being realized during inflation.

On Scale and Conformal Invariance in Four Dimensions

We study the implications of scale invariance in four-dimensional quantum field theories. Imposing unitarity, we find that infinitely many matrix elements vanish in a suitable kinematical configuration. This vanishing is a nontrivial necessary condition for conformality. We provide an argument why this is expected to be a sufficient condition as well, thereby linking scale and conformal invariance in unitary theories. We also discuss possible exceptions to our argument.

On the four-point function of the stress-energy tensors in a CFT

We discuss to what extent the full set of Ward Identities constrain the four-point function of the stress-energy tensors or conserved currents in a conformal field theory. We calculate the number of kinematically unrestricted functional degrees of freedom governing the corresponding correlators and find that it matches the number of functional degrees of freedom governing scattering amplitudes of some "dual" massless particles in the auxiliary Minkowski space. We also formulate the conformal bootstrap constraints for the correlators in question in terms of only unrestricted degrees of freedom. As a by-product we find interesting parallels between solving Ward Identities in coordinate and momentum space.

Uplifting the baryonic branch: a test for backreacting anti-D3-branes

Placing D3 or anti-D3-branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler background results in uplifting the baryonic branch of the moduli space of the dual field theory. In this paper we derive a mass formula for the scalar particle associated with the motion along the baryonic branch, from both open and closed string points of view. We show that both methods give the same mass at linear order in number of (anti)D3-branes, thus providing a comprehensive check for the recently found linearized supergravity solution describing backreacting anti-D3-branes at the tip.

Non-supersymmetric Conifold

We find a new family of non-supersymmetric numerical solutions of IIB supergravity which are dual to the N=1 cascading "conifold" theory perturbed by certain combinations of relevant single trace and marginal double trace operators with non infinitesimal couplings. The SUSY is broken but the resulting ground states, and their gravity duals, remain stable, at least perturbatively.Despite the complicated field theory dynamics the gravity solutions have a simple structure. They feature the Ricci-flat non-Kahler metric on the deformed conifold and the imaginary self-dual three-form flux accompanied by a constant dilaton.

Comments on the N=1 SU(M+p)xSU(p) quiver gauge theory with flavor

We study supersymmetric vacua of the N=1 cascading SU(M+p)xSU(p) gauge theory with flavor - the theory on p D3-branes and M wrapped D5-branes at the tip of the conifold, and N_f flavor D7-branes wrapping a holomorphic four-cycle inside the conifold. The Coulomb branch of the moduli space is inherited from the pure gauge theory without flavor and was thoroughly studied in the past. Besides, there is a Higgs branch where some D3 and/or D5-branes dissolve in the D7-branes forming the worldvolume gauge instantons. We study the Higgs branch both from the field theory and the bulk point of view. On the classical level the moduli space is closely related to the one of the N=2 C^2/Z_2 orbifold theory, in particular certain vacua of the N=1 theory are related to noncommutative instantons on the resolved C^2/Z_2. On the quantum level the Higgs branch acquires corrections due to renormalization of the Kahler potential and non-perturbative effects in field theory. In the bulk this is encoded in the classical D7-brane geometry. We compute the VEVs of the protected operators and the field theory RG flow and find an agreement with the parallel computations in the bulk.

D-brane non-perturbative effects and geometric deformations

We study how non-perturbative dynamics on D-branes affects the ten-dimensional geometry. We show that a gaugino condensate changes the complex and the symplectic structures of the original manifold by deforming the supersymmetry conditions. The cases of D5, D6 and D7-branes are discussed in detail. In the latter case we find the explicit form of the resulting back-reacted background at linear order in the gaugino condensate.

On gravity dual of a metastable vacuum in Klebanov-Strassler theory

We discuss a supergravity description of the metastable state that is created by a stack of anti-D3-branes placed at the tip of the KS background. When the number p of the anti-D3-branes is large g_s p >> 1 the characteristic curvature of the corresponding gravity dual is large in stringy units and one may expect the background to be regular everywhere. Starting from the distances of order R ~ (g_s p)^{1/4} away from the tip the new background can be well approximated by a linear perturbation around KS. By applying the appropriate boundary conditions in both IR and UV we found the lowest KK mode of the corresponding linear perturbation. The solution we found contains VEVs of the SU(2)x SU(2) invariant operators at the linear order in p. As a non-trivial check we calculate the ADM mass which exactly matches the probe approximation. As a byproduct we also found a gravity background dual to the KS theory deformed by the operators W^2 and W^2\bar{W}^2 with small coefficients.

On Vector Meson Masses in a Holographic SQCD

We study probe flavor branes supersymmetrically embedded in the Klebanov-Strassler background. The embedding is controlled by a single complex parameter mu related to the quark mass. We study the spectrum of the vector mesons as a function of mu and compare it with the experimental data. Assuming that the rho(2150) meson is a 3S mode we find a remarkable agreement with the masses of the lightest excited rho-mesons. Also, for a certain range of parameters our model exhibits an unusual behavior. The mesons built of the lighter quarks become more heavy than the ones built of the heavier quarks. We comment on a possible connection this phenomenon may have with the masses of the putative pure strange-anti strange mesons.

Attractive Holographic Baryons

We propose a holographic model of baryon interactions based on non-supersymmetric D7-anti-D7 flavor branes embedded in the Klebanov-Strassler background. The baryons are D3-branes wrapping the 3-sphere of the conifold with M strings connecting the D3 and the flavor branes. Depending on the location of the latter there are two possibilities: the D3 either remains separate from the flavor branes or dissolves in them and becomes a flavor instanton. The leading order interaction between the baryons is a competition between the attraction and the repulsion due to the sigma and omega mesons. The lightest 0++ particle sigma is a pseudo-Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous breaking of scale invariance. In a certain range of parameters it is parametrically lighter than any other massive state. As a result at large distances baryons attract each other. At short distances the potential admits a repulsive core due to an exchange of the omega vector meson. We discuss baryon coupling to glueballs, massive mesons and pions and point out the condition for the model to have a small binding energy.

Compactification Effects in D-brane Inflation

We determine the scalar potential for a D3-brane in a warped conifold background subject to general ultraviolet perturbations. Incorporating the effects of imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes and four-dimensional curvature at the nonlinear level, we compute the leading terms in the D3-brane potential. We then provide strong cross-checks of our results by reproducing them in the dual gauge theory. Finally, we observe that the D3-brane potential induced by nonperturbative effects on D7-branes can be represented by a ten-dimensional supergravity solution containing suitable IASD fluxes. Our method allows for the systematic inclusion of compactification effects and serves to constrain the D3-brane effective action in a large class of stabilized compactifications.

D3-brane Potentials from Fluxes in AdS/CFT

We give a comprehensive treatment of the scalar potential for a D3-brane in a warped conifold region of a compactification with stabilized moduli. By studying general ultraviolet perturbations in supergravity, we systematically incorporate `compactification effects' sourced by supersymmetry breaking in the compact space. Significant contributions to the D3-brane potential, including the leading term in the infrared, arise from imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes. For an arbitrary Calabi-Yau cone, we determine the most general IASD fluxes in terms of scalar harmonics, then compute the resulting D3-brane potential. Specializing to the conifold, we identify the operator dual to each mode of flux, and for chiral operators we confirm that the potential computed in the gauge theory matches the gravity result. The effects of four-dimensional curvature, including the leading D3-brane mass term, arise directly from the ten-dimensional equations of motion. Furthermore, we show that gaugino condensation on D7-branes provides a local source for IASD flux. This flux precisely encodes the nonperturbative contributions to the D3-brane potential, yielding a promising ten-dimensional representation of four-dimensional nonperturbative effects. Our result encompasses all significant contributions to the D3-brane potential discussed in the literature, and does so in the single coherent framework of ten-dimensional supergravity. Moreover, we identify new terms with irrational scaling dimensions that were inaccessible in prior works. By decoupling gravity in a noncompact configuration, then systematically reincorporating compactification effects as ultraviolet perturbations, we have provided an approach in which Planck-suppressed contributions to the D3-brane effective action can be computed.

Supersymmetric Wilson loops in N=4 SYM and pure spinors

We study supersymmetric Wilson loop operators in four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We show that the contour of a supersymmetric Wilson loop is either an orbit of some conformal transformation of the space-time (case I), or an arbitrary contour in the subspace where local superalgebra generator is a pure spinor (case II). In the more interesting case II we find and classify all pairs (Q,W) of the supercharges and the corresponding operators modulo the action of the global symmetry group.

On Normal Modes of a Warped Throat

As shown in arXiv:hep-th/0405282, the warped deformed conifold has two bosonic massless modes, a pseudoscalar and a scalar, that are dual to the phase and the modulus of the baryonic condensates in the cascading gauge theory. We reconsider the scalar mode sector, mixing fluctuations of the NS-NS 2-form and the metric, and include non-zero 4-d momentum $k_μ$. The resulting pair of coupled equations produce a discrete spectrum of $m_4^2=- k_μ^2$ which is interpreted as the spectrum of $J^{PC}= 0^{+-}$ glueballs in the gauge theory. Similarly, we derive the spectrum of certain pseudoscalar glueballs with $J^{PC}= 0^{--}$, which originate from the decoupled fluctuations of the RR 2-form. We argue that each of the massive scalar or pseudoscalar modes we find belongs to a 4-d massive axial vector or vector supermultiplet. We also discuss our results in the context of a finite length throat embedded into a type IIB flux compactification.

Towards an Explicit Model of D-brane Inflation

We present a detailed analysis of an explicit model of warped D-brane inflation, incorporating the effects of moduli stabilization. We consider the potential for D3-brane motion in a warped conifold background that includes fluxes and holomorphically-embedded D7-branes involved in moduli stabilization. Although the D7-branes significantly modify the inflaton potential, they do not correct the quadratic term in the potential, and hence do not cause a uniform change in the slow-roll parameter eta. Nevertheless, we present a simple example based on the Kuperstein embedding of D7-branes, z_1=constant, in which the potential can be fine-tuned to be sufficiently flat for inflation. To derive this result, it is essential to incorporate the fact that the compactification volume changes slightly as the D3-brane moves. We stress that the compactification geometry dictates certain relationships among the parameters in the inflaton Lagrangian, and these microscopic constraints impose severe restrictions on the space of possible models. We note that the shape of the final inflaton potential differs from projections given in earlier studies: in configurations where inflation occurs, it does so near an inflection point. Finally, we comment on the difficulty of making precise cosmological predictions in this scenario. This is the companion paper to arXiv:0705.3837.

On D3-brane Potentials in Compactifications with Fluxes and Wrapped D-branes

We study the potential governing D3-brane motion in a warped throat region of a string compactification with internal fluxes and wrapped D-branes. If the Kahler moduli of the compact space are stabilized by nonperturbative effects, a D3-brane experiences a force due to its interaction with D-branes wrapping certain four-cycles. We compute this interaction, as a correction to the warped four-cycle volume, using explicit throat backgrounds in supergravity. This amounts to a closed-string channel computation of the loop corrections to the nonperturbative superpotential that stabilizes the volume. We demonstrate for warped conical spaces that the superpotential correction is given by the embedding equation specifying the wrapped four-cycle, in agreement with the general form proposed by Ganor. Our approach automatically provides a solution to the problem of defining a holomorphic gauge coupling on wrapped D7-branes in a background with D3-branes. Finally, our results have applications to cosmological inflation models in which the inflaton is modeled by a D3-brane moving in a warped throat.
