Joint User Association and Resource Allocation in the Uplink of Heterogeneous Networks

This letter considers the problem of joint user association (UA), sub-channel assignment, antenna selection (AS), and power control in the uplink (UL) of a heterogeneous network such that the data rate of small cell users can be maximized while the macro-cell users are protected by imposing a threshold on the cross-tier interference. The considered problem is a non-convex mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP). To tackle the problem, we decompose the original problem into two sub-problems: (i) joint UA, sub-channel assignment, and AS, and (ii) power control. Then, we iteratively solve the subproblems by applying the tools from majorization-minimization (MM) theory and augmented Lagrange method, respectively, and obtain locally optimal solutions for each sub-problem. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed scheme outperforms existing schemes. Complexity analysis of the proposed algorithm is also presented.

Rate Balancing in Full-Duplex MIMO Two-Way Relay Networks

Maximizing the minimum rate for a full-duplex multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless network encompassing two sources and a two-way (TW) relay operating in a two hop manner is investigated. To improve the overall performance, using a zero-forcing approach at the relay to suppress the residual self-interference arising from full-duplex (FD) operation, the underlying max-min problem is cast as an optimization problem which is non-convex. To circumvent this issue, semidefinite relaxation technique is employed, leading to upper and lower bound solutions for the optimization problem. Numerical results verify that the upper and lower bound solutions closely follow each other, showing that the proposed approach results in a close-to-optimal solution. In addition, the impact of residual self-interference upon the overall performance of the network in terms of the minimum rate is illustrated by numerical results, and for low residual self-interference scenarios the superiority of the proposed method compared to an analogous half-duplex (HD) counterpart is shown.

Minimizing The Expected Distortion Using Multi-layer Coding Approach In Two-Hop Networks

This work concerns minimizing the achievable distortion of a Gaussian source over a two-hop block fading channel under mean square-error criterion. It is assumed that there is not a direct link between transmission ends and the communication is carried out through the use of a relay, employing the Decode and Forward (DF) strategy. Moreover, for both of transmitter-to-relay and relay-to-destination links the channel statistics are merely available at the corresponding receivers, while the channel gains are not available at the affiliated transmitters. It is assumed that a Gaussian source is hierarchically encoded through the use of successive refinement source coding approach and sent to the relay using a multi-layer channel code. Similarly, the relay transmits the retrieved information to the destination through the use of a multi-layer code. Accordingly, in a Rayleigh block fading environment, the optimal power allocation across code layers is derived. Numerical results demonstrate that the achievable distortion of the proposed multi-layer approach outperforms that of single-layer code. Moreover, the resulting distortion of DF strategy is better than Amplify and Forward~(AF) strategy for channel mismatch factors greater than one, while the resulting distortion has a marginal degradation for channel mismatch factors lower than one.

Secrecy Capacity of Two-Hop Relay Assisted Wiretap Channels

Incorporating the physical layer characteristics to secure communications has received considerable attention in recent years. Moreover, cooperation with some nodes of network can give benefits of multiple-antenna systems, increasing the secrecy capacity of such channels. In this paper, we consider cooperative wiretap channel with the help of an Amplify and Forward (AF) relay to transmit confidential messages from source to legitimate receiver in the presence of an eavesdropper. In this regard, the secrecy capacity of AF relying is derived, assuming the relay is subject to a peak power constraint. To this end, an achievable secrecy rate for Gaussian input is evaluated through solving a non-convex optimization problem. Then, it is proved that any rates greater than this secrecy rate is not achievable. To do this, the capacity of a genie-aided channel as an upper bound for the secrecy capacity of the underlying channel is derived, showing this upper bound is equal to the computed achievable secrecy rate with Gaussian input. Accordingly, the corresponding secrecy capacity is compared to the Decode and Forward (DF) strategy which is served as the benchmark in the current work.

A Non-MDS Erasure Code Scheme For Storage Applications

This paper investigates the use of redundancy and self repairing against node failures in distributed storage systems, using various strategies. In replication method, access to one replication node is sufficient to reconstruct a lost node, while in MDS erasure coded systems which are optimal in terms of redundancy-reliability tradeoff, a single node failure is repaired after recovering the entire stored data. Moreover, regenerating codes yield a tradeoff curve between storage capacity and repair bandwidth. The current paper aims at investigating a new storage code. Specifically, we propose a non-MDS (2k, k) code that tolerates any three node failures and more importantly, it is shown using our code a single node failure can be repaired through access to only three nodes.

A Fixed Precoding Approach to Achieve the Degrees of Freedom in X channel

This paper aims to provide a fixed precoding scheme to achieve the Degrees of Freedom DoF of the generalized ergodic X channel. This is achieved through using the notion of ergodic interference alignment technique. Accordingly, in the proposed method the transmitters do not require to know the full channel state information, while this assumption is the integral part of existing methods. Instead, a finite-rate feed-back channel is adequate to achieve the DoF. In other words, it is demonstrated that quantized versions of channel gains are adequate to achieve theDOF. To get an insight regarding the functionality of the proposed method, first we rely on finite field channel models, and then extend the terminology to more realistic cases, including dispersive fading channels in the presence of quantizer. Accordingly, in a Rayliegh fading environment, it is shown a feedback rate of 2log(p)+Theta(log(log(p))) can provide the DoF, where $p$ is the total transmit power.

Cost-Bandwidth Tradeoff In Distributed Storage Systems

Distributed storage systems are mainly justified due to the limited amount of storage capacity and improving the reliability through distributing data over multiple storage nodes. On the other hand, it may happen the data is stored in unreliable nodes, while it is desired the end user to have a reliable access to the stored data. So, in an event that a node is damaged, to prevent the system reliability to regress, it is necessary to regenerate a new node with the same amount of stored data as the damaged node to retain the number of storage nodes, thereby having the previous reliability. This requires the new node to connect to some of existing nodes and downloads the required information, thereby occupying some bandwidth, called the repair bandwidth. On the other hand, it is more likely the cost of downloading varies across different nodes. This paper aims at investigating the theoretical cost-bandwidth tradeoff, and more importantly, it is demonstrated that any point on this curve can be achieved through the use of the so called generalized regenerating codes which is an enhancement of the regeneration codes introduced by Dimakis et al. in [1].
