Python's Lunches in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with matter

We study Python's lunch geometries in the two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim model coupled to a massless scalar field in the semiclassical limit. We show that all extrema including the minimal quantum extremal surface, bulges and appetizers lie inside the horizon. We obtain fully back-reacted general bulk solutions with a massless scalar field, which can be understood as deformations of black holes. The temperatures of the left/right black holes become in general different from each other. Moreover, in the presence of both state and source deformations at the same time, the asymptotic black hole spacetime is further excited from that of the vacuum solution. We provide information-theoretic interpretation of deformed geometries including Python's lunches, minimal quantum extremal surface and appetizers according to the entanglement wedge reconstruction hypothesis. By considering the restricted circuit complexity associated with Python's lunch geometries and the operator complexity of the Petz map reconstructing a code space operation, we show that the observational probability of Python's lunch degrees of freedom from the boundary is exponentially suppressed. Thus, any bulk causality violation effects related with Python's lunch degrees are suppressed nonperturbatively.

Effective Cross Section of Fuzzy Dark Matter Halos

We numerically study the movement of two colliding fuzzy dark matter solitons without explicit self-interaction and find the effective cross section of dissipative change in velocity. The cross section turns out to be inversely proportional to the velocity cubed, and we present its analytic interpretation. Using the result we roughly estimate spatial offsets during head-on collisions of two fuzzy dark matter halos, which can be related to the spatial offsets between stars and dark matter in collisions of some galaxy clusters. We also show that the gravitational cooling plays an important role during the collisions.

Unitarity of Entanglement and Islands in Two-Sided Janus Black Holes

We explore the entanglement evolution of boundary intervals in eternal Janus black holes that can be embedded consistently into string theory in the low-energy limit. By studying the geodesics we show that there is a transition in the entanglement characteristic around the Page time, which manifests the unitarity of the evolution. We reproduce and reinterpret these bulk results from two different lower-dimensional perspectives: first as an interface CFT in the usual AdS/CFT correspondence and second as an effective gravity theory in one lower dimension coupled to a radiation background. In the limit where the number of interface degrees of freedom becomes large, we obtain an effective theory on appropriate branes that replace the deep interior region in the bulk, coined the shadow region. In this effective theory, we also identify the island of the radiation entanglement wedge and verify the newly proposed quantum extremization method. Our model clarifies that double holography with gravity in two higher dimensions can be realized in a concrete and consistent way and that the occurrence of islands is natural in one higher dimension. Furthermore, our model reveals that there can be a transitional behavior of the Page curve before the Page time, which is related to the emergence of new matter degrees of freedom on the branes.

Witten indices of abelian M5 brane on $\mathbb{R}\times S^5$

Witten indices and partition functions are computed for abelian 6d tensor and hypermultiplets on $\mathbb{R}\times S^5$ in Lorentzian signature in an R gauge field background which preserves some supersymmetry. We consider a generic supersymmetric squashing that also admits squashing of the Hopf fiber. Wick rotation to Euclidean M5 brane amounts to Wick rotation of squashing parameters and the hypermultiplet mass parameter. We compute Casimir energies for tensor and hypermultiplets separately for general squashing, and match these with the corresponding gravitational anomaly polynomials. We extract Witten indices on $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{CP}^2$ and find that this is zero, again matching with the vanishing anomaly polynomial on an odd dimensional space.

Partially twisted superconformal M5 brane in R-symmetry gauge field backgrounds

We obtain the action for a curved superconformal abelian M5 brane with the background R-symmetry gauge field turned on. We then restrict ourselves to superconformal M5 brane on a sphere times flat Minkowski space. We choose R-symmetry SO(1,4) instead of SO(5), which enables us to partially twist on Minkowski space and replace it by some curved Lorentzian manifold. We obtain M5 brane actions on $M_{1,1} \times S^4$ and $M_{1,2} \times S^3$ where actions and all fields, including the background gauge field, are real. Dimensional reduction along time gives real 5d SYM actions with nonabelian generalizations.

The geometric Langlands twist in five and six dimensions

Abelian 6d (2,0) theory has SO(5) R symmetry. We twist this theory by identifying the R symmetry group with the SO(5) subgroup of the SO(1,5) Lorentz group. This twisted theory can be put on any five-manifold M, times R, while preserving one scalar supercharge. We subsequently assume the existence of one unit normalized Killing vector field on M, and we find a corresponding SO(4) twist that preserves two supercharges and is a generalization of the geometric Langlands twist of 4d SYM. We generalize the story to non-Abelian gauge group for the corresponding 5d SYM theories on M. We derive a vanishing theorem for BPS contact instantons by identifying the 6d potential energy and its BPS bound, in the 5d theory. To this end we need to perform a Wick rotation that complexifies the gauge field.

Multi-faced Black Janus and Entanglement

To the second order of the deformation parameter, we construct the black brane solutions, which are dual to the multiple interface deformations of conformal field theories. We compute their thermodynamic quantities from the gravity and the field theory sides, and find a precise agreement, confirming the validity of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The correlation of two separate interfaces induces a Casimir energy and an interesting form of correlated entropy contribution. We comment on the properties of the interface lattice system too.

Entropy of universe as entanglement entropy

We note that the observable part of universe at a certain time t_P is necessarily limited, when there is a beginning of universe. We argue that an appropriate spacetime region associated with an observer from tI to t_P is the causal diamond which is the overlap of the past/future of the observer at t_P/t_I respectively. We also note that the overlap surface \partial D of the future and the past lightcones bisects the spatial section including \partial D into two regions D and \bar D where D is the region inside the causal diamond and \bar D the remaining part of the spatial section. We propose here that the entropy of universe associated with a causal diamond is given by an entanglement entropy where one is tracing over the Hilbert space associated with the region \bar D which is not accessible by the observer. We test our proposal for various examples of cosmological spacetimes, including flat or open FRW universes, by showing that the entropy as the area of \partial D divided by 4G is a non-decreasing function of time t_P as dictated by the generalized second law of thermodynamics. The closed, recollapsing universe corresponds to a finite system and there is no reason to expect the validity of the generalized second law for such a finite system.

M5/D4 brane partition function on a circle bundle

We consider Abelian M5 brane on a six-manifold which we take as a circle bundle over a five-manifold $M$. We compute the zero mode part of the M5 brane partition function using Chern-Simons theory and Hamiltonian formulation respectively and find an agreement. We also show that the D4 brane on $M$ shares exactly the same zero mode partition function again using the Hamiltonian formulation. For the oscillator modes we find that KK modes associated with the circle compactification are missing from the D4 brane. By making an infinitesimal noncommutative deformation we have instanton threshold bound states. We explicitly compute the instanton partition function up to instanton charge three, and show a perfect match with a corresponding contribution inside the M5 brane partition function, thus providing a very strong supporting evidence that D4 brane is identical with M5 brane which extends beyond the BPS sector. We comment on the modular properties of the M5 brane partition function when compactified on $T^2$ times a four-manifold. We briefly discuss a case of a singular fibration.

Holographic Correlation Functions for Open Strings and Branes

In this paper, we compute holographically the two-point and three-point functions of giant gravitons with open strings. We consider the maximal giant graviton in $S^5$ and the string configurations corresponding to the ground states of Z=0 and Y=0 open spin chain, and the spinning string in AdS$_5$ corresponding to the derivative type impurities in Y=0 or Z=0 open spin chain as well. We treat the D-brane and open string contribution separately and find the corresponding D3-brane and string configurations in bulk which connect the composite operators at the AdS$_5$ boundary. We apply a new prescription to treat the string state contribution and find agreements for the two-point functions. For the three-point functions of two giant gravitons with open strings and one certain half-BPS chiral primary operator, we find that the D-brane contributions to structure constant are always vanishing and the open string contribution for the Y=0 ground state is in perfect match with the prediction in the free field limit.

Janus Black Holes

In this paper Janus black holes in AdS3 are considered. These are static solutions of an Einstein-scalar system with broken translation symmetry along the horizon. These solutions are dual to interface conformal field theories at finite temperature. An approximate solution is first constructed using perturbation theory around a planar BTZ black hole. Numerical and exact solutions valid for all sets of parameters are then found and compared. Using the exact solution the thermodynamics of the system is analyzed. The entropy associated with the Janus black hole is calculated and it is found that the entropy of the black Janus is the sum of the undeformed black hole entropy and the entanglement entropy associated with the defect.

Symmetry Breaking Phase Transitions in ABJM Theory with a Finite U(1) Chemical Potential

We consider the U(1) charged sector of ABJM theory at finite temperature, which corresponds to the Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole in the dual type IIA supergravity description. Including back-reaction to the bulk geometry, we show that phase transitions occur to a broken phase where SU(4) R-symmetry of the field theory is broken spontaneously by the condensation of dimension one or two operators. We show both numerically and analytically that the relevant critical exponents for the dimension one operator agree precisely with those of mean field theory in the strongly coupled regime of the large N planar limit.

Generalized Dynamical Spin Chain and 4-Loop Integrability in N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory

We revisit unitary representation of centrally extended (2 | 2) excitation superalgebra. We find most generally that `pseudo-momentum', not lattice momentum, diagonalizes spin chain Hamiltonian and leads to generalized dynamic spin chain. All known results point to lattice momentum diagonalization for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Having different interacting structure, we ask if N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory provides an example of pseudo-momentum diagonalization. For SO(6) sector, we study maximal shuffling and next-to-maximal shuffling terms in the dilatation operator and compare them with results expected from psu(2|2) superalgebbra and integrability. At two loops, we rederive maximal shuffling term (3-site) and find perfect agreement with known results. At four loops, we first find absence of next-to-maximal shuffling term (4-site), in agreement with prediction based on integrability. We next extract maximal shuffling term (5-site), the most relevant term for checking the possibility of pseudo-momentum diagonalization. Curiously, we find that result agrees with integraility prediction based on lattice momentum, as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Consistency of our results is fully ensured by checks of renormalizability up to six loops.

Integrability of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory at Six Loops and Beyond

We study issues concerning perturbative integrability of N=6 Chern-Simons theory at planar and weak `t Hooft coupling regime. By Feynman diagrammatics, we derive so called maximal-ranged interactions in the quantum dilatation generator, originating from homogeneous and inhomogeneous diagrams. These diagrams require proper regularization of not only ultraviolet but also infrared divergences. We first consider standard operator mixing method. We show that homogeneous diagrams are obtainable by recursive method to all orders. The method, however, is not easily extendable to inhomogeneous diagrams. We thus consider two-point function method and study both operator contents and spectrum of the quantum dilatation generator up to six loop orders. We show that, of two possible classes of operators, only one linear combination actually contributes. Curiously, this is exactly the same combination as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We then study spectrum of anomalous dimension up to six loops. We find that the spectrum agrees perfectly with the prediction based on quantum integrability. In evaluating the six loop diagrams, we utilized remarkable integer-relation algorithm (PSLQ) developed by Ferguson, Baily and Arno.

Static Length Scales of N=6 Chern-Simons Plasma

Using gravity description, we compute various static length scales of N=6 Chern Simons plasma in a strongly coupled regime. For this, we consider the CP3 compactification of the type IIA supergravity down to four dimensions, and identify all the low-lying bosonic modes up to masses corresponding to the operator dimension 3 together with all the remaining CP3 invariant modes. We find the true mass gap, the Debye screening mass and the corresponding dual operators to be probed in the field theory side.

Thermal Aspects of ABJM theory: Currents and Condensations

To study thermal aspects of the ABJM theory in the strongly coupled regime, we carry out the CP3 invariant dimensional reduction of the type IIA supergravity down to four dimensions. We then investigate zero and finite temperature responses of the operators which are dual to the AdS scalar and vector fields. Two scalar operators are shown to have finite-temperature condensations by coupling of constant source term. The currents dual to the massless and massive gauge fields are not induced by coupling of constant boundary vector potential, which implies that the phase described by black brane background is not superconducting. We also discuss a generalization to charged (dyonic) black holes.

Integrable Spin Chain of Superconformal U(M)xU(N) Chern-Simons Theory

N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with gauge group U(M)xU(N)} is dual to N M2-branes and (M-N) fractional M2-branes, equivalently, discrete 3-form holonomy at C4/Zk orbifold singularity. We show that, much like its regular counterpart of M=N, the theory at planar limit have integrability structure in the conformal dimension spectrum of single trace operators. We first revisit the Yang-Baxter equation for a spin chain system associated with the single trace operators. We show that the integrability by itself does not preclude parity symmetry breaking. We construct two-parameter family of parity non-invariant, alternating spin chain Hamiltonian involving three-site interactions between 4 and 4* of SU(4). At weak `t Hooft coupling, we study the Chern-Simons theory perturbatively and calculate anomalous dimension of single trace operators up to two loops. The computation is essentially parallel to the regular case M=N. We find that resulting spin chain Hamiltonian matches with the Hamiltonian derived from Yang-Baxter equation, but to the one preserving parity symmetry. We give several intuitive explanations why the parity symmetry breaking is not detected in the Chern-Simons spin chain Hamiltonian at perturbative level. We suggest that open spin chain, associated with open string excitations on giant gravitons or dibaryons, can detect discrete flat holonomy and hence parity symmetry breaking through boundary field.

Time dependent black holes and thermal equilibration

We study aspects of a recently proposed exact time dependent black hole solution of IIB string theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The dual field theory is a thermal system in which initially a vacuum density for a non-conserved operator is turned on. We can see that in agreement with general thermal field theory expectation the system equilibrates: the expectation value of the non-conserved operator goes to zero exponentially and the entropy increases. In the field theory the process can be described quantitatively in terms of a thermofield state and exact agreement with the gravity answers is found.

The D2 Susy Zoo

We present new supersymmetric solutions of the Dirac-Born-Infeld equations for time-independent D2-branes, including a 1/2 supersymmetric `dyonic' D2-brane and various 1/4 supersymmetric configurations that include `twisted' supertubes, superfunnels with arbitrary planar cross-section, asymptotically planar D2-branes, and non-singular intersections of `magnetic' D2-branes. Our analysis is exhaustive for D2-branes in three space dimensions.

Holography, Dimensional Reduction and the Bekenstein Bound

We consider dimensional reduction of the lightlike holography of the covariant entropy bound from D+1 dimensional geometry of M X S to the D dimensional geometry M. With a warping factor, the local Bekenstein bound in D+1 dimensions leads to a more refined form of the bound from the D dimensional view point. With this new local Bekenstein bound, it is quite possible to saturate the lightlike holography even with nonvanishing expansion rate. With a Kaluza-Klein gauge field, the dimensional reduction implies a stronger bound where the energy momentum tensor contribution is replaced by the energy momentum tensor with the electromagnetic contribution subtracted.

BPS equations in Six and Eight Dimensions

We consider the maximal supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theories on six and eight dimensional space. We determine, in a systematic way, all the possible fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the BPS states and present the corresponding `self-dual' BPS equations. In six dimensions the intrinsic one has 1/4 supersymmetry, while in eight dimensions, 1/16, 2/16, ..., 6/16. We apply our results to some explicit BPS configurations of finite or infinite energy on commutative or noncommutative spaces.

Comments on Noncommutative Gauge Theories

We study the gauge theories on noncommutative space. We employ the idea of the covariant position to understand the linear and angular momenta, the center of mass position, and to express all gauge invariant observables including the Wilson line. In addition, we utilize the universality of the U(1) gauge theory, which originates from the underlying matrix theory, to analyze various solitons on U(N) theories, like the unstable static vortex solutions in two dimensions and BPS dyonic fluxon solutions.

Cosmic Holography

A new version of holographic principle for cosmology is proposed, which dictates that particle entropy within `cosmological apparent horizon' should not exceed gravitational entropy associated with the apparent horizon. It is shown that, in the Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology, the open Universe as well as a restricted class of flat cases are compatible with the principle, whereas closed Universe is not. It is also found that inflationary Universe after the big-bang is incompatible with the cosmic holography.

Exact Solutions of Multi-Vortices and False Vacuum Bubbles in Noncommutative Abelian-Higgs Theories

We consider the noncommutative Abelian-Higgs theory and construct new types of exact multi-vortex solutions that solve the static equations of motion. They in general do not follow from the BPS equations; only for some specific values of parameters, they satisfy the BPS equations saturating the Bogomol'nyi bound. We further consider the Abelian-Higgs theory with more complicated scalar potential allowing unstable minima and construct exact solutions of noncommutative false vacuum bubble with integer magnetic flux. The classical stability of the solutions is discussed.

Deformed Nahm Equation and a Noncommutative BPS Monopole

A deformed Nahm equation for the BPS equation in the noncommutative N=4 supersymmetric U(2) Yang-Mills theory is obtained. Using this, we constructed explicitly a monopole solution of the noncommutative BPS equation to the linear order of the noncommutativity scale. We found that the leading order correction to the ordinary SU(2) monopole lies solely in the overall U(1) sector and that the overall U(1) magnetic field has an expected long range component of magnetic dipole moment.

Gravitational Collapse and Calogero Model

We study the analytic structure of the S-matrix which is obtained from the reduced Wheeler-DeWitt wave function describing spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar fields. The simple poles in the S-matrix occur in the Euclidean spacetime, and the Euclidean Wheeler-DeWitt equation is a variant of the Calogero models, which is discussed in connection with conformal mechanics and a quantum instanton.

Low Energy Dynamics for 1/4 BPS Dyons

Classical 1/4 BPS configurations consist of 1/2 BPS dyons which are positioned by competing static forces from electromagnetic and Higgs sectors. These forces do not follow the simple inverse square law, but can be encoded in some low energy effective potential between fundamental monopoles of distinct types. In this paper, we find this potential, by comparing the exact 1/4 BPS bound from a Yang-Mills field theory with its counterpart derived from low energy effective dynamics of monopoles. Our method is generalized to arbitrary gauge groups and to arbitrary BPS monopole/dyon configurations. The resulting effective action for 1/4 BPS states is written explicitly, and shown to be determined entirely by the geometry of multi-monopole moduli spaces. We also explore its natural supersymmetric extension.

Dynamics of BPS States in the Dirac-Born-Infeld Theory

The Dirac-Born-Infeld action with transverse scalar fields is considered to study the dynamics of various BPS states. We first describe the characteristic properties of the so-called 1/2 and 1/4 BPS states on the D3 brane, which can be interpreted as F/D-strings ending on a D3-brane in Type IIB string theory picture. We then study the response of the BPS states to low energy excitations of massless fields on the brane, the scalar fields representing the shape fluctuation of the brane and U(1) gauge fields describing the open string excitations on the D-brane. This leads to an identification of interactions between BPS states including the static potentials and the kinetic interactions.

Factorization and q-Deformed Algebra of Quantum Anharmonic Oscillator

We have studied the underlying algebraic structure of the anharmonic oscillator by using the variational perturbation theory. To the first order of the variational perturbation, the Hamiltonian is found to be factorized into a supersymmetric form in terms of the annihilation and creation operators, which satisfy a q-deformed algebra. This algebraic structure is used to construct all the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian.

Holographic Principle and String Cosmology

String cosmology is revisited from cosmological viewpoint of holographic principle put forward by `t Hooft, and by Fischler and Susskind. It is shown that the holography requires existence of a `graceful exit' mechanism, which renders the Universe nonsingular by connecting pre- and post-big bang phases smoothly. It is proven that flat Universe is consistent with the holography only if it starts with an absolutely cold and vacuous state. Particle entropy produced during the `graceful exit' apparently saturates the holography bound. Open Universe can always satisfy the holography no matter what initial state of the Universe is.

String-Inspired Gravity with Interacting Point Particles

We reformulate two dimensional string-inspired gravity with point particles as a gauge theory of the extended Poincaré group. A non-minimal gauge coupling is necessary for the equivalence of the two descriptions. The classical one-particle problem is analyzed completely. In addition, we obtain the many-particle effective action after eliminating the gravity degrees of freedom. We investigate properties of this effective action, and show how to recover the geometrical description. Quantization of the gauge-theoretic model is carried out and the explicit one-particle solution is found. However, we show that the formulation leads to a quantum mechanical inconsistency in the two-particle case. Possible cures are discussed.

Non-Abelian Chern-Simons Particles and their Quantization

A many--body Schrödinger equation for non--Abelian Chern--Simons particles is obtained from both point--particle and field--theoretic pictures. We present a particle Lagrangian and a field theoretic Lagrange density, and discuss their properties. Both are quantized by the symplectic method of Hamiltonian reduction. An $N$--body Schrödinger equation for the particles is obtained from both starting points. It is shown that the resulting interaction between particles can be replaced by non--trivial boundary conditions. Also, the equation is compared with the one given in the literature.

Energy-Momentum Conservation in General Relativity

We discuss general properties of the conservation law associated with a local symmetry. Using Noether's theorem and a generalized Belinfante symmetrization procedure in 3+1 dimensions, a symmetric energy-momentum (pseudo) tensor for the gravitational Einstein-Hilbert action is derived and discussed in detail. In 2+1 dimensions, expressions are obtained for energy and angular momentum arising in the $ISO(2,1)$ gauge theoretical formulation of Einstein gravity. In addition, an expression for energy in a gauge theoretical formulation of the string-inspired 1+1 dimensional gravity is derived and compared with the ADM definition of energy.
