Approximation of surface diffusion flow: a second order variational Cahn--Hilliard model with degenerate mobilities

This paper tackles the approximation of surface diffusion flow using a Cahn--Hilliard-type model. We introduce and analyze a new second order variational phase field model which associates the classical Cahn--Hilliard energy with two degenerate mobilities. This association allows to gain an order of approximation of the sharp limit. In a second part, we propose some simple and efficient numerical schemes to approximate the solutions, and we provide numerical 2D and 3D experiments that illustrate the interest of our model in comparison with other Cahn--Hilliard models.

Connected perimeter of planar sets

We introduce a notion of connected perimeter for planar sets defined as the lower semi-continuous envelope of perimeters of approximating sets which are measure-theoretically connected. A companion notion of simply connected perimeter is also studied. We prove a representation formula which links the connected perimeter, the classical perimeter, and the length of suitable Steiner trees. We also discuss the application of this notion to the existence of solutions to a nonlocal minimization problem.

Higher-Order Total Directional Variation: Analysis

We analyse a new notion of total anisotropic higher-order variation which, differently from the Total Generalized Variation by Bredies et al., quantifies for possibly non-symmetric tensor fields their variations at arbitrary order weighted by possibly inhomogeneous, smooth elliptic anisotropies. We prove some properties of this total variation and of the associated spaces of tensors with finite variations. We show the existence of solutions to a related regularity-fidelity optimisation problem. We also prove a decomposition formula which appears to be helpful for the design of numerical schemes, as shown in a companion paper, where several applications to image processing are studied.

Higher-Order Total Directional Variation: Imaging Applications

We introduce a class of higher-order anisotropic total variation regularisers, which are defined for possibly inhomogeneous, smooth elliptic anisotropies, that extends the Total Generalized Variation (TGV) regulariser and its variants. We propose a primal-dual hybrid gradient approach to approximate numerically the associated gradient flow. This choice of regularisers allows to preserve and enhance intrinsic anisotropic features in images. This is illustrated on various examples from different imaging applications: image denoising, wavelet-based image zooming, and reconstruction of surfaces from scattered height measurements.

Weak and approximate curvatures of a measure: a varifold perspective

By revisiting the notion of generalized second fundamental form originally introduced by Hutchinson for a special class of integral varifolds, we define a weak curvature tensor that is particularly well-suited for being extended to general varifolds of any dimension and codimension through regularization. The resulting approximate second fundamental forms are defined not only for piecewise-smooth surfaces, but also for datasets of very general type (like, e.g., point clouds). We obtain explicitly computable formulas for both weak and approximate curvature tensors, we exhibit structural properties and prove convergence results, and lastly we provide some numerical tests on point clouds that confirm the generality and effectiveness of our approach.

On the minimization of total mean curvature

In this paper we are interested in possible extensions of an inequality due to Minkowski: $\int_{\partialΩ} H\,dA \geq \sqrt{4πA(\partialΩ)}$ valid for any regular open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$, where $H$ denotes the scalar mean curvature and $A$ the area. We prove that this inequality holds true for axisymmetric domains which are convex in the direction orthogonal to the axis of symmetry. We also show that this inequality cannot be true in more general situations. However we prove that $\int_{\partialΩ} |H|\,dA \geq \sqrt{4πA(\partialΩ)}$ remains true for any axisymmetric domain.

Phase-field approximations of the Willmore functional and flow

We discuss in this paper phase-field approximations of the Willmore functional and the associated L2-flow. After recollecting known results on the approximation of the Willmore energy and its L1-relaxation, we derive the expression of the flows associated with various approximations, and we show their behavior by formal arguments based on matched asymptotic expansions. We introduce an accurate numerical scheme, whose local convergence can be proved, to describe with more details the behavior of two flows, the classical and the flow associated with an approximation model due to Mugnai. We propose a series of numerical simulations in 2D and 3D to illustrate their behavior in both smooth and singular situations.

Gradient Young measures, varifolds, and a generalized Willmore functional

Being Omega an open and bounded Lipschitz domain of R^n, we consider the generalized Willmore functional on Omega defined, for smooth functions, as the p-Willmore energy of each isolevel set integrated over all levels. We propose a new framework, that combines varifolds and Young measures, to study the relaxation of this functional in BV(Omega) with respect to the strong topology of L^1.

A coarea-type formula for the relaxation of a generalized elastica functional

We consider in R^2 the generalized elastica functional defined, for smooth functions, as the p-elastica energies of the level lines integrated over all levels. Extending the functional to L1, we study its L1-lower semicontinuous envelope and we prove that, for any u in BV, the envelope at u can be represented by a coarea-type formula involving suitable collections of W2,p curves that cover the essential boundaries of the level sets of u.

A linear framework for region-based image segmentation and inpainting involving curvature penalization

We present the first method to handle curvature regularity in region-based image segmentation and inpainting that is independent of initialization. To this end we start from a new formulation of length-based optimization schemes, based on surface continuation constraints, and discuss the connections to existing schemes. The formulation is based on a \emph{cell complex} and considers basic regions and boundary elements. The corresponding optimization problem is cast as an integer linear program. We then show how the method can be extended to include curvature regularity, again cast as an integer linear program. Here, we are considering pairs of boundary elements to reflect curvature. Moreover, a constraint set is derived to ensure that the boundary variables indeed reflect the boundary of the regions described by the region variables. We show that by solving the linear programming relaxation one gets quite close to the global optimum, and that curvature regularity is indeed much better suited in the presence of long and thin objects compared to standard length regularity.

On a linear programming approach to the discrete Willmore boundary value problem and generalizations

We consider the problem of finding (possibly non connected) discrete surfaces spanning a finite set of discrete boundary curves in the three-dimensional space and minimizing (globally) a discrete energy involving mean curvature. Although we consider a fairly general class of energies, our main focus is on the Willmore energy, i.e. the total squared mean curvature Our purpose is to address the delicate task of approximating global minimizers of the energy under boundary constraints. The main contribution of this work is to translate the nonlinear boundary value problem into an integer linear program, using a natural formulation involving pairs of elementary triangles chosen in a pre-specified dictionary and allowing self-intersection. Our work focuses essentially on the connection between the integer linear program and its relaxation. We prove that: - One cannot guarantee the total unimodularity of the constraint matrix, which is a sufficient condition for the global solution of the relaxed linear program to be always integral, and therefore to be a solution of the integer program as well; - Furthermore, there are actually experimental evidences that, in some cases, solving the relaxed problem yields a fractional solution. Due to the very specific structure of the constraint matrix here, we strongly believe that it should be possible in the future to design ad-hoc integer solvers that yield high-definition approximations to solutions of several boundary value problems involving mean curvature, in particular the Willmore boundary value problem.
