CalibAnyView: Beyond Single-View Camera Calibration in the Wild

Camera calibration is a fundamental prerequisite for reliable geometric perception, yet classical approaches rely on controlled acquisition setups that are impractical for in-the-wild imagery. Recent learning-based methods have shown promising results for single-view calibration, but inherently neglect geometric consistency across multiple views. We introduce CalibAnyView, a unified formulation that supports an arbitrary number of input views ($N \geq 1$) by explicitly modeling cross-view geometric consistency. To facilitate this, we construct a large-scale multi-view video dataset covering diverse real-world scenarios, including multiple camera models, dynamic scenes, realistic motion trajectories, and heterogeneous lens distortions. Building on this dataset, we develop a multi-view transformer that predicts dense perspective fields, which are further integrated into a geometric optimization framework to jointly estimate camera intrinsics and gravity direction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CalibAnyView consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieves strong robustness under single-view settings, and further improves with multi-view inference, providing a reliable foundation for downstream tasks such as 3D reconstruction and robotic perception in the wild.

DIAMOND-SSS: Diffusion-Augmented Multi-View Optimization for Data-efficient SubSurface Scattering

Subsurface scattering (SSS) gives translucent materials -- such as wax, jade, marble, and skin -- their characteristic soft shadows, color bleeding, and diffuse glow. Modeling these effects in neural rendering remains challenging due to complex light transport and the need for densely captured multi-view, multi-light datasets (often more than 100 views and 112 OLATs). We present DIAMOND-SSS, a data-efficient framework for high-fidelity translucent reconstruction from extremely sparse supervision -- even as few as ten images. We fine-tune diffusion models for novel-view synthesis and relighting, conditioned on estimated geometry and trained on less than 7 percent of the dataset, producing photorealistic augmentations that can replace up to 95 percent of missing captures. To stabilize reconstruction under sparse or synthetic supervision, we introduce illumination-independent geometric priors: a multi-view silhouette consistency loss and a multi-view depth consistency loss. Across all sparsity regimes, DIAMOND-SSS achieves state-of-the-art quality in relightable Gaussian rendering, reducing real capture requirements by up to 90 percent compared to SSS-3DGS.

MambaPanoptic: A Vision Mamba-based Structured State Space Framework for Panoptic Segmentation

Panoptic segmentation requires the simultaneous recognition of countable thing instances and amorphous stuff regions, placing joint demands on long-range context modelling, multi-scale feature representation, and efficient dense prediction. Existing convolutional and transformer-based methods struggle to satisfy all three requirements concurrently: convolutional architectures are limited in their capacity to model long-range dependencies, while transformer-based methods incur quadratic computational cost that is prohibitive at high resolutions. In this paper, we propose MambaPanoptic, a fully Mamba-based panoptic segmentation framework that addresses these limitations through two principal contributions. First, we introduce MambaFPN, a top-down feature pyramid that leverages Mamba blocks to generate globally coherent, multi-scale feature representations with linear computational complexity. Second, we adopt a PanopticFCN-style kernel generator that produces unified thing and stuff kernels for proposal-free panoptic prediction, enhanced by a QuadMamba-based feature refinement module applied at multiple network stages. Experiments on the Cityscapes and COCO panoptic segmentation benchmarks demonstrate that MambaPanoptic consistently outperforms PanopticDeepLab and PanopticFCN under comparable model sizes, and matches or surpasses Mask2Former on Cityscapes in PQ and AP while requiring fewer parameters.

TRASE: Tracking-free 4D Segmentation and Editing

Understanding dynamic 3D scenes is crucial for extended reality (XR) and autonomous driving. Incorporating semantic information into 3D reconstruction enables holistic scene representations, unlocking immersive and interactive applications. To this end, we introduce TRASE, a novel tracking-free 4D segmentation method for dynamic scene understanding. TRASE learns a 4D segmentation feature field in a weakly-supervised manner, leveraging a soft-mined contrastive learning objective guided by SAM masks. The resulting feature space is semantically coherent and well-separated, and final object-level segmentation is obtained via unsupervised clustering. This enables fast editing, such as object removal, composition, and style transfer, by directly manipulating the scene's Gaussians. We evaluate TRASE on five dynamic benchmarks, demonstrating state-of-the-art segmentation performance from unseen viewpoints and its effectiveness across various interactive editing tasks. ViSTA-SLAM: Visual SLAM with Symmetric Two-view Association

We present ViSTA-SLAM as a real-time monocular visual SLAM system that operates without requiring camera intrinsics, making it broadly applicable across diverse camera setups. At its core, the system employs a lightweight symmetric two-view association (STA) model as the frontend, which simultaneously estimates relative camera poses and regresses local pointmaps from only two RGB images. This design reduces model complexity significantly, the size of our frontend is only 35\% that of comparable state-of-the-art methods, while enhancing the quality of two-view constraints used in the pipeline. In the backend, we construct a specially designed Sim(3) pose graph that incorporates loop closures to address accumulated drift. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves superior performance in both camera tracking and dense 3D reconstruction quality compared to current methods. Multi-Vehicle Trajectory Prediction at Intersections using State and Intention Information

Traditional approaches to prediction of future trajectory of road agents rely on knowing information about their past trajectory. This work rather relies only on having knowledge of the current state and intended direction to make predictions for multiple vehicles at intersections. Furthermore, message passing of this information between the vehicles provides each one of them a more holistic overview of the environment allowing for a more informed prediction. This is done by training a neural network which takes the state and intent of the multiple vehicles to predict their future trajectory. Using the intention as an input allows our approach to be extended to additionally control the multiple vehicles to drive towards desired paths. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness of our approach both in terms of trajectory prediction and vehicle control at intersections. A Scalable Combinatorial Solver for Elastic Geometrically Consistent 3D Shape Matching

We present a scalable combinatorial algorithm for globally optimizing over the space of geometrically consistent mappings between 3D shapes. We use the mathematically elegant formalism proposed by Windheuser et al. (ICCV 2011) where 3D shape matching was formulated as an integer linear program over the space of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms. Until now, the resulting formulation had limited practical applicability due to its complicated constraint structure and its large size. We propose a novel primal heuristic coupled with a Lagrange dual problem that is several orders of magnitudes faster compared to previous solvers. This allows us to handle shapes with substantially more triangles than previously solvable. We demonstrate compelling results on diverse datasets, and, even showcase that we can address the challenging setting of matching two partial shapes without availability of complete shapes. A Unified Framework for Implicit Sinkhorn Differentiation

The Sinkhorn operator has recently experienced a surge of popularity in computer vision and related fields. One major reason is its ease of integration into deep learning frameworks. To allow for an efficient training of respective neural networks, we propose an algorithm that obtains analytical gradients of a Sinkhorn layer via implicit differentiation. In comparison to prior work, our framework is based on the most general formulation of the Sinkhorn operator. It allows for any type of loss function, while both the target capacities and cost matrices are differentiated jointly. We further construct error bounds of the resulting algorithm for approximate inputs. Finally, we demonstrate that for a number of applications, simply replacing automatic differentiation with our algorithm directly improves the stability and accuracy of the obtained gradients. Moreover, we show that it is computationally more efficient, particularly when resources like GPU memory are scarce.

Biologically Inspired Neural Path Finding

The human brain can be considered to be a graphical structure comprising of tens of billions of biological neurons connected by synapses. It has the remarkable ability to automatically re-route information flow through alternate paths in case some neurons are damaged. Moreover, the brain is capable of retaining information and applying it to similar but completely unseen scenarios. In this paper, we take inspiration from these attributes of the brain, to develop a computational framework to find the optimal low cost path between a source node and a destination node in a generalized graph. We show that our framework is capable of handling unseen graphs at test time. Moreover, it can find alternate optimal paths, when nodes are arbitrarily added or removed during inference, while maintaining a fixed prediction time. CHALLENGER: Training with Attribution Maps

We show that utilizing attribution maps for training neural networks can improve regularization of models and thus increase performance. Regularization is key in deep learning, especially when training complex models on relatively small datasets. In order to understand inner workings of neural networks, attribution methods such as Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) have been extensively studied, particularly for interpreting the relevance of input features. We introduce Challenger, a module that leverages the explainable power of attribution maps in order to manipulate particularly relevant input patterns. Therefore, exposing and subsequently resolving regions of ambiguity towards separating classes on the ground-truth data manifold, an issue that arises particularly when training models on rather small datasets. Our Challenger module increases model performance through building more diverse filters within the network and can be applied to any input data domain. We demonstrate that our approach results in substantially better classification as well as calibration performance on datasets with only a few samples up to datasets with thousands of samples. In particular, we show that our generic domain-independent approach yields state-of-the-art results in vision, natural language processing and on time series tasks.

DM-VIO: Delayed Marginalization Visual-Inertial Odometry

We present DM-VIO, a monocular visual-inertial odometry system based on two novel techniques called delayed marginalization and pose graph bundle adjustment. DM-VIO performs photometric bundle adjustment with a dynamic weight for visual residuals. We adopt marginalization, which is a popular strategy to keep the update time constrained, but it cannot easily be reversed, and linearization points of connected variables have to be fixed. To overcome this we propose delayed marginalization: The idea is to maintain a second factor graph, where marginalization is delayed. This allows us to later readvance this delayed graph, yielding an updated marginalization prior with new and consistent linearization points. In addition, delayed marginalization enables us to inject IMU information into already marginalized states. This is the foundation of the proposed pose graph bundle adjustment, which we use for IMU initialization. In contrast to prior works on IMU initialization, it is able to capture the full photometric uncertainty, improving the scale estimation. In order to cope with initially unobservable scale, we continue to optimize scale and gravity direction in the main system after IMU initialization is complete. We evaluate our system on the EuRoC, TUM-VI, and 4Seasons datasets, which comprise flying drone, large-scale handheld, and automotive scenarios. Thanks to the proposed IMU initialization, our system exceeds the state of the art in visual-inertial odometry, even outperforming stereo-inertial methods while using only a single camera and IMU. DynamicEarthNet: Daily Multi-Spectral Satellite Dataset for Semantic Change Segmentation

Earth observation is a fundamental tool for monitoring the evolution of land use in specific areas of interest. Observing and precisely defining change, in this context, requires both time-series data and pixel-wise segmentations. To that end, we propose the DynamicEarthNet dataset that consists of daily, multi-spectral satellite observations of 75 selected areas of interest distributed over the globe with imagery from Planet Labs. These observations are paired with pixel-wise monthly semantic segmentation labels of 7 land use and land cover (LULC) classes. DynamicEarthNet is the first dataset that provides this unique combination of daily measurements and high-quality labels. In our experiments, we compare several established baselines that either utilize the daily observations as additional training data (semi-supervised learning) or multiple observations at once (spatio-temporal learning) as a point of reference for future research. Finally, we propose a new evaluation metric SCS that addresses the specific challenges associated with time-series semantic change segmentation. Efficient and Flexible Sublabel-Accurate Energy Minimization

We address the problem of minimizing a class of energy functions consisting of data and smoothness terms that commonly occur in machine learning, computer vision, and pattern recognition. While discrete optimization methods are able to give theoretical optimality guarantees, they can only handle a finite number of labels and therefore suffer from label discretization bias. Existing continuous optimization methods can find sublabel-accurate solutions, but they are not efficient for large label spaces. In this work, we propose an efficient sublabel-accurate method that utilizes the best properties of both continuous and discrete models. We separate the problem into two sequential steps: (i) global discrete optimization for selecting the label range, and (ii) efficient continuous sublabel-accurate local refinement of a convex approximation of the energy function in the chosen range. Doing so allows us to achieve a boost in time and memory efficiency while practically keeping the accuracy at the same level as continuous convex relaxation methods, and in addition, providing theoretical optimality guarantees at the level of discrete methods. Finally, we show the flexibility of the proposed approach to general pairwise smoothness terms, so that it is applicable to a wide range of regularizations. Experiments on the illustrating example of the image denoising problem demonstrate the properties of the proposed method. Efficient Globally Optimal 2D-to-3D Deformable Shape Matching

We propose the first algorithm for non-rigid 2D-to-3D shape matching, where the input is a 2D shape represented as a planar curve and a 3D shape represented as a surface; the output is a continuous curve on the surface. We cast the problem as finding the shortest circular path on the product 3-manifold of the surface and the curve. We prove that the optimal matching can be computed in polynomial time with a (worst-case) complexity of $O(mn^2\log(n))$, where $m$ and $n$ denote the number of vertices on the template curve and the 3D shape respectively. We also demonstrate that in practice the runtime is essentially linear in $m\!\cdot\! n$ making it an efficient method for shape analysis and shape retrieval. Quantitative evaluation confirms that the method provides excellent results for sketch-based deformable 3D shape retrieval.

Implicit Shape Completion via Adversarial Shape Priors

We present a novel neural implicit shape method for partial point cloud completion. To that end, we combine a conditional Deep-SDF architecture with learned, adversarial shape priors. More specifically, our network converts partial inputs into a global latent code and then recovers the full geometry via an implicit, signed distance generator. Additionally, we train a PointNet++ discriminator that impels the generator to produce plausible, globally consistent reconstructions. In that way, we effectively decouple the challenges of predicting shapes that are both realistic, i.e. imitate the training set's pose distribution, and accurate in the sense that they replicate the partial input observations. In our experiments, we demonstrate state-of-the-art performance for completing partial shapes, considering both man-made objects (e.g. airplanes, chairs, ...) and deformable shape categories (human bodies). Finally, we show that our adversarial training approach leads to visually plausible reconstructions that are highly consistent in recovering missing parts of a given object.

Intrinsic Neural Fields: Learning Functions on Manifolds

Neural fields have gained significant attention in the computer vision community due to their excellent performance in novel view synthesis, geometry reconstruction, and generative modeling. Some of their advantages are a sound theoretic foundation and an easy implementation in current deep learning frameworks. While neural fields have been applied to signals on manifolds, e.g., for texture reconstruction, their representation has been limited to extrinsically embedding the shape into Euclidean space. The extrinsic embedding ignores known intrinsic manifold properties and is inflexible wrt. transfer of the learned function. To overcome these limitations, this work introduces intrinsic neural fields, a novel and versatile representation for neural fields on manifolds. Intrinsic neural fields combine the advantages of neural fields with the spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We show theoretically that intrinsic neural fields inherit many desirable properties of the extrinsic neural field framework but exhibit additional intrinsic qualities, like isometry invariance. In experiments, we show intrinsic neural fields can reconstruct high-fidelity textures from images with state-of-the-art quality and are robust to the discretization of the underlying manifold. We demonstrate the versatility of intrinsic neural fields by tackling various applications: texture transfer between deformed shapes & different shapes, texture reconstruction from real-world images with view dependence, and discretization-agnostic learning on meshes and point clouds.

Joint Deep Multi-Graph Matching and 3D Geometry Learning from Inhomogeneous 2D Image Collections

Graph matching aims to establish correspondences between vertices of graphs such that both the node and edge attributes agree. Various learning-based methods were recently proposed for finding correspondences between image key points based on deep graph matching formulations. While these approaches mainly focus on learning node and edge attributes, they completely ignore the 3D geometry of the underlying 3D objects depicted in the 2D images. We fill this gap by proposing a trainable framework that takes advantage of graph neural networks for learning a deformable 3D geometry model from inhomogeneous image collections, i.e.,~a set of images that depict different instances of objects from the same category. Experimentally, we demonstrate that our method outperforms recent learning-based approaches for graph matching considering both accuracy and cycle-consistency error, while we in addition obtain the underlying 3D geometry of the objects depicted in the 2D images.

Lateral Ego-Vehicle Control without Supervision using Point Clouds

Existing vision based supervised approaches to lateral vehicle control are capable of directly mapping RGB images to the appropriate steering commands. However, they are prone to suffering from inadequate robustness in real world scenarios due to a lack of failure cases in the training data. In this paper, a framework for training a more robust and scalable model for lateral vehicle control is proposed. The framework only requires an unlabeled sequence of RGB images. The trained model takes a point cloud as input and predicts the lateral offset to a subsequent frame from which the steering angle is inferred. The frame poses are in turn obtained from visual odometry. The point cloud is conceived by projecting dense depth maps into 3D. An arbitrary number of additional trajectories from this point cloud can be generated during training. This is to increase the robustness of the model. Online experiments show that the performance of our method is superior to that of the supervised model.

Lifting the Convex Conjugate in Lagrangian Relaxations: A Tractable Approach for Continuous Markov Random Fields

Dual decomposition approaches in nonconvex optimization may suffer from a duality gap. This poses a challenge when applying them directly to nonconvex problems such as MAP-inference in a Markov random field (MRF) with continuous state spaces. To eliminate such gaps, this paper considers a reformulation of the original nonconvex task in the space of measures. This infinite-dimensional reformulation is then approximated by a semi-infinite one, which is obtained via a piecewise polynomial discretization in the dual. We provide a geometric intuition behind the primal problem induced by the dual discretization and draw connections to optimization over moment spaces. In contrast to existing discretizations which suffer from a grid bias, we show that a piecewise polynomial discretization better preserves the continuous nature of our problem. Invoking results from optimal transport theory and convex algebraic geometry we reduce the semi-infinite program to a finite one and provide a practical implementation based on semidefinite programming. We show, experimentally and in theory, that the approach successfully reduces the duality gap. To showcase the scalability of our approach, we apply it to the stereo matching problem between two images.

The Probabilistic Normal Epipolar Constraint for Frame-To-Frame Rotation Optimization under Uncertain Feature Positions

The estimation of the relative pose of two camera views is a fundamental problem in computer vision. Kneip et al. proposed to solve this problem by introducing the normal epipolar constraint (NEC). However, their approach does not take into account uncertainties, so that the accuracy of the estimated relative pose is highly dependent on accurate feature positions in the target frame. In this work, we introduce the probabilistic normal epipolar constraint (PNEC) that overcomes this limitation by accounting for anisotropic and inhomogeneous uncertainties in the feature positions. To this end, we propose a novel objective function, along with an efficient optimization scheme that effectively minimizes our objective while maintaining real-time performance. In experiments on synthetic data, we demonstrate that the novel PNEC yields more accurate rotation estimates than the original NEC and several popular relative rotation estimation algorithms. Furthermore, we integrate the proposed method into a state-of-the-art monocular rotation-only odometry system and achieve consistently improved results for the real-world KITTI dataset.

Vision-based Large-scale 3D Semantic Mapping for Autonomous Driving Applications

In this paper, we present a complete pipeline for 3D semantic mapping solely based on a stereo camera system. The pipeline comprises a direct sparse visual odometry front-end as well as a back-end for global optimization including GNSS integration, and semantic 3D point cloud labeling. We propose a simple but effective temporal voting scheme which improves the quality and consistency of the 3D point labels. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations of our pipeline are performed on the KITTI-360 dataset. The results show the effectiveness of our proposed voting scheme and the capability of our pipeline for efficient large-scale 3D semantic mapping. The large-scale mapping capabilities of our pipeline is furthermore demonstrated by presenting a very large-scale semantic map covering 8000 km of roads generated from data collected by a fleet of vehicles.

VPAIR -- Aerial Visual Place Recognition and Localization in Large-scale Outdoor Environments

Visual Place Recognition and Visual Localization are essential components in navigation and mapping for autonomous vehicles especially in GNSS-denied navigation scenarios. Recent work has focused on ground or close to ground applications such as self-driving cars or indoor-scenarios and low-altitude drone flights. However, applications such as Urban Air Mobility require operations in large-scale outdoor environments at medium to high altitudes. We present a new dataset named VPAIR. The dataset was recorded on board a light aircraft flying at an altitude of more than 300 meters above ground capturing images with a downwardfacing camera. Each image is paired with a high resolution reference render including dense depth information and 6-DoF reference poses. The dataset covers a more than one hundred kilometers long trajectory over various types of challenging landscapes, e.g. urban, farmland and forests. Experiments on this dataset illustrate the challenges introduced by the change in perspective to a bird's eye view such as in-plane rotations.

Rotation-Equivariant Deep Learning for Diffusion MRI

Convolutional networks are successful, but they have recently been outperformed by new neural networks that are equivariant under rotations and translations. These new networks work better because they do not struggle with learning each possible orientation of each image feature separately. So far, they have been proposed for 2D and 3D data. Here we generalize them to 6D diffusion MRI data, ensuring joint equivariance under 3D roto-translations in image space and the matching 3D rotations in $q$-space, as dictated by the image formation. Such equivariant deep learning is appropriate for diffusion MRI, because microstructural and macrostructural features such as neural fibers can appear at many different orientations, and because even non-rotation-equivariant deep learning has so far been the best method for many diffusion MRI tasks. We validate our equivariant method on multiple-sclerosis lesion segmentation. Our proposed neural networks yield better results and require fewer scans for training compared to non-rotation-equivariant deep learning. They also inherit all the advantages of deep learning over classical diffusion MRI methods. Square Root Marginalization for Sliding-Window Bundle Adjustment

In this paper we propose a novel square root sliding-window bundle adjustment suitable for real-time odometry applications. The square root formulation pervades three major aspects of our optimization-based sliding-window estimator: for bundle adjustment we eliminate landmark variables with nullspace projection; to store the marginalization prior we employ a matrix square root of the Hessian; and when marginalizing old poses we avoid forming normal equations and update the square root prior directly with a specialized QR decomposition. We show that the proposed square root marginalization is algebraically equivalent to the conventional use of Schur complement (SC) on the Hessian. Moreover, it elegantly deals with rank-deficient Jacobians producing a prior equivalent to SC with Moore-Penrose inverse. Our evaluation of visual and visual-inertial odometry on real-world datasets demonstrates that the proposed estimator is 36% faster than the baseline. It furthermore shows that in single precision, conventional Hessian-based marginalization leads to numeric failures and reduced accuracy. We analyse numeric properties of the marginalization prior to explain why our square root form does not suffer from the same effect and therefore entails superior performance.

Vision-Based Mobile Robotics Obstacle Avoidance With Deep Reinforcement Learning

Obstacle avoidance is a fundamental and challenging problem for autonomous navigation of mobile robots. In this paper, we consider the problem of obstacle avoidance in simple 3D environments where the robot has to solely rely on a single monocular camera. In particular, we are interested in solving this problem without relying on localization, mapping, or planning techniques. Most of the existing work consider obstacle avoidance as two separate problems, namely obstacle detection, and control. Inspired by the recent advantages of deep reinforcement learning in Atari games and understanding highly complex situations in Go, we tackle the obstacle avoidance problem as a data-driven end-to-end deep learning approach. Our approach takes raw images as input and generates control commands as output. We show that discrete action spaces are outperforming continuous control commands in terms of expected average reward in maze-like environments. Furthermore, we show how to accelerate the learning and increase the robustness of the policy by incorporating predicted depth maps by a generative adversarial network.

Bregman Proximal Mappings and Bregman-Moreau Envelopes under Relative Prox-Regularity

We systematically study the local single-valuedness of the Bregman proximal mapping and local smoothness of the Bregman--Moreau envelope of a nonconvex function under relative prox-regularity - an extension of prox-regularity - which was originally introduced by Poliquin and Rockafellar. As Bregman distances are asymmetric in general, in accordance with Bauschke et al., it is natural to consider two variants of the Bregman proximal mapping, which, depending on the order of the arguments, are called left and right Bregman proximal mapping. We consider the left Bregman proximal mapping first. Then, via translation result, we obtain analogue (and partially sharp) results for the right Bregman proximal mapping. The class of relatively prox-regular functions significantly extends the recently considered class of relatively hypoconvex functions. In particular, relative prox-regularity allows for functions with a possibly nonconvex domain. Moreover, as a main source of examples and analogously to the classical setting, we introduce relatively amenable functions, i.e. convexly composite functions, for which the inner nonlinear mapping is component-wise smooth adaptable, a recently introduced extension of Lipschitz differentiability. By way of example, we apply our theory to locally interpret joint alternating Bregman minimization with proximal regularization as a Bregman proximal gradient algorithm, applied to a smooth adaptable function.

D3VO: Deep Depth, Deep Pose and Deep Uncertainty for Monocular Visual Odometry

We propose D3VO as a novel framework for monocular visual odometry that exploits deep networks on three levels -- deep depth, pose and uncertainty estimation. We first propose a novel self-supervised monocular depth estimation network trained on stereo videos without any external supervision. In particular, it aligns the training image pairs into similar lighting condition with predictive brightness transformation parameters. Besides, we model the photometric uncertainties of pixels on the input images, which improves the depth estimation accuracy and provides a learned weighting function for the photometric residuals in direct (feature-less) visual odometry. Evaluation results show that the proposed network outperforms state-of-the-art self-supervised depth estimation networks. D3VO tightly incorporates the predicted depth, pose and uncertainty into a direct visual odometry method to boost both the front-end tracking as well as the back-end non-linear optimization. We evaluate D3VO in terms of monocular visual odometry on both the KITTI odometry benchmark and the EuRoC MAV dataset.The results show that D3VO outperforms state-of-the-art traditional monocular VO methods by a large margin. It also achieves comparable results to state-of-the-art stereo/LiDAR odometry on KITTI and to the state-of-the-art visual-inertial odometry on EuRoC MAV, while using only a single camera.

Deep Learning for Virtual Screening: Five Reasons to Use ROC Cost Functions

Computer-aided drug discovery is an essential component of modern drug development. Therein, deep learning has become an important tool for rapid screening of billions of molecules in silico for potential hits containing desired chemical features. Despite its importance, substantial challenges persist in training these models, such as severe class imbalance, high decision thresholds, and lack of ground truth labels in some datasets. In this work we argue in favor of directly optimizing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) in such cases, due to its robustness to class imbalance, its ability to compromise over different decision thresholds, certain freedom to influence the relative weights in this compromise, fidelity to typical benchmarking measures, and equivalence to positive/unlabeled learning. We also propose new training schemes (coherent mini-batch arrangement, and usage of out-of-batch samples) for cost functions based on the ROC, as well as a cost function based on the logAUC metric that facilitates early enrichment (i.e. improves performance at high decision thresholds, as often desired when synthesizing predicted hit compounds). We demonstrate that these approaches outperform standard deep learning approaches on a series of PubChem high-throughput screening datasets that represent realistic and diverse drug discovery campaigns on major drug target families.

DH3D: Deep Hierarchical 3D Descriptors for Robust Large-Scale 6DoF Relocalization

For relocalization in large-scale point clouds, we propose the first approach that unifies global place recognition and local 6DoF pose refinement. To this end, we design a Siamese network that jointly learns 3D local feature detection and description directly from raw 3D points. It integrates FlexConv and Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) to assure that the learned local descriptor captures multi-level geometric information and channel-wise relations. For detecting 3D keypoints we predict the discriminativeness of the local descriptors in an unsupervised manner. We generate the global descriptor by directly aggregating the learned local descriptors with an effective attention mechanism. In this way, local and global 3D descriptors are inferred in one single forward pass. Experiments on various benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves competitive results for both global point cloud retrieval and local point cloud registration in comparison to state-of-the-art approaches. To validate the generalizability and robustness of our 3D keypoints, we demonstrate that our method also performs favorably without fine-tuning on the registration of point clouds that were generated by a visual SLAM system. DirectShape: Direct Photometric Alignment of Shape Priors for Visual Vehicle Pose and Shape Estimation

Scene understanding from images is a challenging problem encountered in autonomous driving. On the object level, while 2D methods have gradually evolved from computing simple bounding boxes to delivering finer grained results like instance segmentations, the 3D family is still dominated by estimating 3D bounding boxes. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to jointly infer the 3D rigid-body poses and shapes of vehicles from a stereo image pair using shape priors. Unlike previous works that geometrically align shapes to point clouds from dense stereo reconstruction, our approach works directly on images by combining a photometric and a silhouette alignment term in the energy function. An adaptive sparse point selection scheme is proposed to efficiently measure the consistency with both terms. In experiments, we show superior performance of our method on 3D pose and shape estimation over the previous geometric approach and demonstrate that our method can also be applied as a refinement step and significantly boost the performances of several state-of-the-art deep learning based 3D object detectors. Effective Version Space Reduction for Convolutional Neural Networks

In active learning, sampling bias could pose a serious inconsistency problem and hinder the algorithm from finding the optimal hypothesis. However, many methods for neural networks are hypothesis space agnostic and do not address this problem. We examine active learning with convolutional neural networks through the principled lens of version space reduction. We identify the connection between two approaches---prior mass reduction and diameter reduction---and propose a new diameter-based querying method---the minimum Gibbs-vote disagreement. By estimating version space diameter and bias, we illustrate how version space of neural networks evolves and examine the realizability assumption. With experiments on MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, SVHN and STL-10 datasets, we demonstrate that diameter reduction methods reduce the version space more effectively and perform better than prior mass reduction and other baselines, and that the Gibbs vote disagreement is on par with the best query method.

Efficient Derivative Computation for Cumulative B-Splines on Lie Groups

Continuous-time trajectory representation has recently gained popularity for tasks where the fusion of high-frame-rate sensors and multiple unsynchronized devices is required. Lie group cumulative B-splines are a popular way of representing continuous trajectories without singularities. They have been used in near real-time SLAM and odometry systems with IMU, LiDAR, regular, RGB-D and event cameras, as well as for offline calibration. These applications require efficient computation of time derivatives (velocity, acceleration), but all prior works rely on a computationally suboptimal formulation. In this work we present an alternative derivation of time derivatives based on recurrence relations that needs $\mathcal{O}(k)$ instead of $\mathcal{O}(k^2)$ matrix operations (for a spline of order $k$) and results in simple and elegant expressions. While producing the same result, the proposed approach significantly speeds up the trajectory optimization and allows for computing simple analytic derivatives with respect to spline knots. The results presented in this paper pave the way for incorporating continuous-time trajectory representations into more applications where real-time performance is required.

From Planes to Corners: Multi-Purpose Primitive Detection in Unorganized 3D Point Clouds

We propose a new method for segmentation-free joint estimation of orthogonal planes, their intersection lines, relationship graph and corners lying at the intersection of three orthogonal planes. Such unified scene exploration under orthogonality allows for multitudes of applications such as semantic plane detection or local and global scan alignment, which in turn can aid robot localization or grasping tasks. Our two-stage pipeline involves a rough yet joint estimation of orthogonal planes followed by a subsequent joint refinement of plane parameters respecting their orthogonality relations. We form a graph of these primitives, paving the way to the extraction of further reliable features: lines and corners. Our experiments demonstrate the validity of our approach in numerous scenarios from wall detection to 6D tracking, both on synthetic and real data.

Hamiltonian Dynamics for Real-World Shape Interpolation

We revisit the classical problem of 3D shape interpolation and propose a novel, physically plausible approach based on Hamiltonian dynamics. While most prior work focuses on synthetic input shapes, our formulation is designed to be applicable to real-world scans with imperfect input correspondences and various types of noise. To that end, we use recent progress on dynamic thin shell simulation and divergence-free shape deformation and combine them to address the inverse problem of finding a plausible intermediate sequence for two input shapes. In comparison to prior work that mainly focuses on small distortion of consecutive frames, we explicitly model volume preservation and momentum conservation, as well as an anisotropic local distortion model. We argue that, in order to get a robust interpolation for imperfect inputs, we need to model the input noise explicitly which results in an alignment based formulation. Finally, we show a qualitative and quantitative improvement over prior work on a broad range of synthetic and scanned data. Besides being more robust to noisy inputs, our method yields exactly volume preserving intermediate shapes, avoids self-intersections and is scalable to high resolution scans.

Homogeneous Linear Inequality Constraints for Neural Network Activations

We propose a method to impose homogeneous linear inequality constraints of the form $Ax\leq 0$ on neural network activations. The proposed method allows a data-driven training approach to be combined with modeling prior knowledge about the task. One way to achieve this task is by means of a projection step at test time after unconstrained training. However, this is an expensive operation. By directly incorporating the constraints into the architecture, we can significantly speed-up inference at test time; for instance, our experiments show a speed-up of up to two orders of magnitude over a projection method. Our algorithm computes a suitable parameterization of the feasible set at initialization and uses standard variants of stochastic gradient descent to find solutions to the constrained network. Thus, the modeling constraints are always satisfied during training. Crucially, our approach avoids to solve an optimization problem at each training step or to manually trade-off data and constraint fidelity with additional hyperparameters. We consider constrained generative modeling as an important application domain and experimentally demonstrate the proposed method by constraining a variational autoencoder.

MOT20: A benchmark for multi object tracking in crowded scenes

Standardized benchmarks are crucial for the majority of computer vision applications. Although leaderboards and ranking tables should not be over-claimed, benchmarks often provide the most objective measure of performance and are therefore important guides for research. The benchmark for Multiple Object Tracking, MOTChallenge, was launched with the goal to establish a standardized evaluation of multiple object tracking methods. The challenge focuses on multiple people tracking, since pedestrians are well studied in the tracking community, and precise tracking and detection has high practical relevance. Since the first release, MOT15, MOT16, and MOT17 have tremendously contributed to the community by introducing a clean dataset and precise framework to benchmark multi-object trackers. In this paper, we present our MOT20benchmark, consisting of 8 new sequences depicting very crowded challenging scenes. The benchmark was presented first at the 4thBMTT MOT Challenge Workshop at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference (CVPR) 2019, and gives to chance to evaluate state-of-the-art methods for multiple object tracking when handling extremely crowded scenarios.

On the well-posedness of uncalibrated photometric stereo under general lighting

Uncalibrated photometric stereo aims at estimating the 3D-shape of a surface, given a set of images captured from the same viewing angle, but under unknown, varying illumination. While the theoretical foundations of this inverse problem under directional lighting are well-established, there is a lack of mathematical evidence for the uniqueness of a solution under general lighting. On the other hand, stable and accurate heuristical solutions of uncalibrated photometric stereo under such general lighting have recently been proposed. The quality of the results demonstrated therein tends to indicate that the problem may actually be well-posed, but this still has to be established. The present paper addresses this theoretical issue, considering first-order spherical harmonics approximation of general lighting. Two important theoretical results are established. First, the orthographic integrability constraint ensures uniqueness of a solution up to a global concave-convex ambiguity, which had already been conjectured, yet not proven. Second, the perspective integrability constraint makes the problem well-posed, which generalizes a previous result limited to directional lighting. Eventually, a closed-form expression for the unique least-squares solution of the problem under perspective projection is provided, allowing numerical simulations on synthetic data to empirically validate our findings.

Optimization of Graph Total Variation via Active-Set-based Combinatorial Reconditioning

Structured convex optimization on weighted graphs finds numerous applications in machine learning and computer vision. In this work, we propose a novel adaptive preconditioning strategy for proximal algorithms on this problem class. Our preconditioner is driven by a sharp analysis of the local linear convergence rate depending on the "active set" at the current iterate. We show that nested-forest decomposition of the inactive edges yields a guaranteed local linear convergence rate. Further, we propose a practical greedy heuristic which realizes such nested decompositions and show in several numerical experiments that our reconditioning strategy, when applied to proximal gradient or primal-dual hybrid gradient algorithm, achieves competitive performances. Our results suggest that local convergence analysis can serve as a guideline for selecting variable metrics in proximal algorithms.

The TUM VI Benchmark for Evaluating Visual-Inertial Odometry

Visual odometry and SLAM methods have a large variety of applications in domains such as augmented reality or robotics. Complementing vision sensors with inertial measurements tremendously improves tracking accuracy and robustness, and thus has spawned large interest in the development of visual-inertial (VI) odometry approaches. In this paper, we propose the TUM VI benchmark, a novel dataset with a diverse set of sequences in different scenes for evaluating VI odometry. It provides camera images with 1024x1024 resolution at 20 Hz, high dynamic range and photometric calibration. An IMU measures accelerations and angular velocities on 3 axes at 200 Hz, while the cameras and IMU sensors are time-synchronized in hardware. For trajectory evaluation, we also provide accurate pose ground truth from a motion capture system at high frequency (120 Hz) at the start and end of the sequences which we accurately aligned with the camera and IMU measurements. The full dataset with raw and calibrated data is publicly available. We also evaluate state-of-the-art VI odometry approaches on our dataset.

Visual-Inertial Mapping with Non-Linear Factor Recovery

Cameras and inertial measurement units are complementary sensors for ego-motion estimation and environment mapping. Their combination makes visual-inertial odometry (VIO) systems more accurate and robust. For globally consistent mapping, however, combining visual and inertial information is not straightforward. To estimate the motion and geometry with a set of images large baselines are required. Because of that, most systems operate on keyframes that have large time intervals between each other. Inertial data on the other hand quickly degrades with the duration of the intervals and after several seconds of integration, it typically contains only little useful information. In this paper, we propose to extract relevant information for visual-inertial mapping from visual-inertial odometry using non-linear factor recovery. We reconstruct a set of non-linear factors that make an optimal approximation of the information on the trajectory accumulated by VIO. To obtain a globally consistent map we combine these factors with loop-closing constraints using bundle adjustment. The VIO factors make the roll and pitch angles of the global map observable, and improve the robustness and the accuracy of the mapping. In experiments on a public benchmark, we demonstrate superior performance of our method over the state-of-the-art approaches.

Rolling-Shutter Modelling for Direct Visual-Inertial Odometry

We present a direct visual-inertial odometry (VIO) method which estimates the motion of the sensor setup and sparse 3D geometry of the environment based on measurements from a rolling-shutter camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The visual part of the system performs a photometric bundle adjustment on a sparse set of points. This direct approach does not extract feature points and is able to track not only corners, but any pixels with sufficient gradient magnitude. Neglecting rolling-shutter effects in the visual part severely degrades accuracy and robustness of the system. In this paper, we incorporate a rolling-shutter model into the photometric bundle adjustment that estimates a set of recent keyframe poses and the inverse depth of a sparse set of points. IMU information is accumulated between several frames using measurement preintegration, and is inserted into the optimization as an additional constraint between selected keyframes. For every keyframe we estimate not only the pose but also velocity and biases to correct the IMU measurements. Unlike systems with global-shutter cameras, we use both IMU measurements and rolling-shutter effects of the camera to estimate velocity and biases for every state. Last, we evaluate our system on a novel dataset that contains global-shutter and rolling-shutter images, IMU data and ground-truth poses for ten different sequences, which we make publicly available. Evaluation shows that the proposed method outperforms a system where rolling shutter is not modelled and achieves similar accuracy to the global-shutter method on global-shutter data.

Sparse Surface Constraints for Combining Physics-based Elasticity Simulation and Correspondence-Free Object Reconstruction

We address the problem to infer physical material parameters and boundary conditions from the observed motion of a homogeneous deformable object via the solution of an inverse problem. Parameters are estimated from potentially unreliable real-world data sources such as sparse observations without correspondences. We introduce a novel Lagrangian-Eulerian optimization formulation, including a cost function that penalizes differences to observations during an optimization run. This formulation matches correspondence-free, sparse observations from a single-view depth sequence with a finite element simulation of deformable bodies. In conjunction with an efficient hexahedral discretization and a stable, implicit formulation of collisions, our method can be used in demanding situation to recover a variety of material parameters, ranging from Young's modulus and Poisson ratio to gravity and stiffness damping, and even external boundaries. In a number of tests using synthetic datasets and real-world measurements, we analyse the robustness of our approach and the convergence behavior of the numerical optimization scheme.

Direct Sparse Odometry with Rolling Shutter

Neglecting the effects of rolling-shutter cameras for visual odometry (VO) severely degrades accuracy and robustness. In this paper, we propose a novel direct monocular VO method that incorporates a rolling-shutter model. Our approach extends direct sparse odometry which performs direct bundle adjustment of a set of recent keyframe poses and the depths of a sparse set of image points. We estimate the velocity at each keyframe and impose a constant-velocity prior for the optimization. In this way, we obtain a near real-time, accurate direct VO method. Our approach achieves improved results on challenging rolling-shutter sequences over state-of-the-art global-shutter VO.

Direct Sparse Visual-Inertial Odometry using Dynamic Marginalization

We present VI-DSO, a novel approach for visual-inertial odometry, which jointly estimates camera poses and sparse scene geometry by minimizing photometric and IMU measurement errors in a combined energy functional. The visual part of the system performs a bundle-adjustment like optimization on a sparse set of points, but unlike key-point based systems it directly minimizes a photometric error. This makes it possible for the system to track not only corners, but any pixels with large enough intensity gradients. IMU information is accumulated between several frames using measurement preintegration, and is inserted into the optimization as an additional constraint between keyframes. We explicitly include scale and gravity direction into our model and jointly optimize them together with other variables such as poses. As the scale is often not immediately observable using IMU data this allows us to initialize our visual-inertial system with an arbitrary scale instead of having to delay the initialization until everything is observable. We perform partial marginalization of old variables so that updates can be computed in a reasonable time. In order to keep the system consistent we propose a novel strategy which we call "dynamic marginalization". This technique allows us to use partial marginalization even in cases where the initial scale estimate is far from the optimum. We evaluate our method on the challenging EuRoC dataset, showing that VI-DSO outperforms the state of the art.

Omnidirectional DSO: Direct Sparse Odometry with Fisheye Cameras

We propose a novel real-time direct monocular visual odometry for omnidirectional cameras. Our method extends direct sparse odometry (DSO) by using the unified omnidirectional model as a projection function, which can be applied to fisheye cameras with a field-of-view (FoV) well above 180 degrees. This formulation allows for using the full area of the input image even with strong distortion, while most existing visual odometry methods can only use a rectified and cropped part of it. Model parameters within an active keyframe window are jointly optimized, including the intrinsic/extrinsic camera parameters, 3D position of points, and affine brightness parameters. Thanks to the wide FoV, image overlap between frames becomes bigger and points are more spatially distributed. Our results demonstrate that our method provides increased accuracy and robustness over state-of-the-art visual odometry algorithms.
